Trump Administration Issues Report Concluding That Climate Change Is Real And Man-Made

Tyler Durden's picture

"This assessment concludes, based on extensive evidence, that it is extremely likely that human activities, especially emissions of greenhouse gases, are the dominant cause of the observed warming since the mid-20th century. For the warming over the last century, there is no convincing alternative explanation supported by the extent of the observational evidence.:

           - from "Highlights of the Findings of the U.S. Global Change Research Program Climate Science Special Report", Nov. 3 2017

Surprising many "climate watchers", on Friday the Trump Administration allowed the release of a sweeping federal climate report that began under President Barack Obama and concludes that humans are the primary driver of climate change, causing higher temperatures, sea level rise, agriculture problems and more. The report - whose executive summary alone is 34 pages - found the Earth is undergoing its warmest period “in the history of modern civilization,” fueled primarily by rising levels of carbon dioxide. It was released by the U.S. Global Change Research Program, which is mandated by Congress to report every four years on the state of climate change.

The massive study - which is the first volume of the Fourth National Climate Assessment, was years in the making and involved contributions from more than a dozen federal agencies - is meant to be an authoritative assessment of the current state of climate change science.

However, what has caught pundits by surprise, is that many of the report’s conclusions directly contradict the Trump administration’s publicly held positions on climate change.

Case in point: Trump officials like EPA chief Scott Pruitt and Energy Secretary Rick Perry have said they can’t be sure whether human-caused greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide are the primary cause of climate change. And yet the Climate Assessment plainly states that is the case. “This assessment concludes, based on extensive evidence, that it is extremely likely that human activities, especially emissions of greenhouse gases, are the dominant cause of the observed warming since the mid-20th century,” it says. “For the warming over the last century, there is no convincing alternative explanation supported by the extent of the observational evidence.”

"Globally averaged, annually averaged surface air temperature has increased by about 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit, or 1 degree Centigrade, over the last 115 years," David Fahey, an atmospheric scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and one of the leading authors of the report, told reporters. "This period is now the warmest in the history of modern civilization."

While it concedes that greenhouse gas emission growth has slowed in recent years, it concludes it’s not enough to keep temperatures from rising more than 2 degrees Celsius, the limit at which scientists expect the worst effects of climate change to be irreversible.

The report also cites “thousands of studies conducted by researchers around the world” that show evidence of a warming globe, including “changes in surface, atmospheric, and oceanic temperatures; melting glaciers; diminishing snow cover; shrinking sea ice; rising sea levels; ocean acidification; and increasing atmospheric water vapor.” The study also includes dire warnings about the impact of climate change on human activities.

Heavy rainfall, which causes flooding, is expected to increase over the rest of the century, and heat waves will become more frequent. Severe weather events like forest fires and drought will grow more prevalent, and sea levels will rise “by at least several inches in the next 15 years and by 1–to-4 feet by 2100.”

Severe weather events like forest fires and drought will grow more prevalent, and sea levels will rise “by at least several inches in the next 15 years and by 1–to-4 feet by 2100.”

The study is the fourth time this century that federal scientists have put together a report on the impacts of climate change around the globe and in the United States.

What has perplexed analysts, is what was contained in the study, or rather what wasn't: this year’s assessment comes amid concerns that the White House would work to undermine the study’s conclusions. As we reported at the time, scientists shared a draft version of the study with The New York Times in August, seeking extra publicity for its findings in the hope of rebuffing any attempt to water it down.

"Of course there are perhaps fears. We’re all citizens and scientists at the same time. But I think whatever fears we had weren’t realized," NOAA scientist Fahey said. "The word ‘interference’ might have been a threat, but it never materialized. This report says what the scientists wanted it to say."

In an attempt to preserve some ambivalence, the White House issued a statement that “the climate has changed and is always changing” and pointed to a line in the report that concluded the future of climate change depends primarily on “remaining uncertainty in the sensitivity of Earth's climate to [greenhouse gas] emissions.”

The report said, with “very high confidence,” that the magnitude of climate change will also depend on the “amount of greenhouse gases emitted globally” over the next few decades.

“The administration supports rigorous scientific analysis and debate and encourages public comment on the draft documents being released today. To address climate change as well as other risks, the U.S. will continue to promote access to the affordable and reliable energy needed to grow economically, and to support technology, innovation and the development of modern and efficient infrastructure that will reduce emissions and enable us to add

The bottom line, and what may spark controversies among Trump supporters, is that the central premise of the report, that climate change is real and that humans are to blame, contradicts previous statements of President Donald Trump and many high-ranking members of his administration, who have questioned the scientific findings regarding climate change. The EPA had no immediate comment.

Sorry, but you haven't been granted the proper authorization to die.

First, you must make the concession that you are responsible for all of the world's ills.

After receiving and filling out all of the proper government forms, and after paying all of the administrative and processing costs in fiat currency, then you may be granted permission to die.

Don't even think about dying before all of your wealth and labor has been extracted.

You mean like the 'concerned citizen scientists' that said: radiation was not harmful, vaccines do not cause harm, roundup is harmless, fluoride is good for you, falicies of the food pyramid(eating to many fats and proteins will make you fat, homoginized/pasturized milk is healthy, no difference between organic and non-organic), pharmaceutical/medical malpractice pushing harmful drugs for profit. The AMA/ADA endorsing cigarettes as non harmful, lest we forget the security endustrial complex and MIC and their confirmed false flag lists.

The list of expert concerned citizens fvking man over for special interest and profits is endless. Climate change and the controls it will empower governments with will in many ways have the most damaging effect for individual liberties.

Record-Setting Hurricanes; Record temperatures; Record-Setting Wildfires; ya think it might be global warming?

THE EVIDENCE OF GLOBAL WARMING IS OVERWHELMING.

So, why is the global rise in temperatures so worrisome?

For one thing, as temperatures rise good farmland will become desert (e.g., dust-bowl conditions will probably return to the American Midwest).

Another major problem is sea-level rise.

Have a look at http://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/fs2-00/

The U.S. Geological Survey people claim that;

The Greenland ice sheet melting will raise sea-level 6.55 meters (21.5 feet),
the West Antarctica ice sheet melting will raise sea-level 8.06 meters (26.4 feet),
the East Antarctica ice sheet melting will raise sea-level 64.8 meters (212.6 feet),
and all other ice melting will raise sea-level 0.91 meters (3 feet).

For a grand total of about 80 meters (263 feet).

So, what does an 80 meter (263 feet) rise in sea-level mean. Have a look at the following map of the world after an 80 meter rise. It means that over one billion people will have to be resettled to higher ground and that much of the most productive agricultural land will be under water. Fortunately, at current rates, the Greenland ice sheet will take over a thousand years to melt and the Antarctica ice sheet, much longer. However, the greater the temperature rise the faster the ice sheets will melt, bringing the problem much closer. Remember, the huge ice sheet that recently covered much of North America, almost completely melted in only 15,000 years (today, only the Greenland ice sheet, and some other small patches of it, remain). Since then (15,000 years ago), sea-levels have risen about 125 meters (410 feet), only 80 meters to go.

The ice sheets have been continuously melting for thousands of years. What is left of them today, is still melting, and will continue to melt. Human caused global warning will cause this remnant to melt significantly faster. This is a big, big, problem.

For HUGE detailed maps of the "World after the Melt" go to:

http://preearth.net/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=23

Global temperatures are increasing. And by quite a lot each year.

2016 is the hottest year on record for global temperatures.

This is 0.0380 degrees centigrade hotter than the previous record year which was 2015.

0.0380 is a large increase in just one year.

2015 was the hottest year (at that time) for global temperatures.

This was 0.1601 degrees hotter than the previous record year which was 2014.

0.1601 is an absolutely huge increase in just one year (at this rate temperatures would increase by 16 degrees in a century).

2014 was the hottest year (at that time) for global temperatures.

This was 0.0402 degrees hotter than the previous record year which was 2010.

http://preearth.net/images/temp-anomalies-1880-2017.txt

The conspiracy to hide global warming data.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is given tax money to make global temperature records available to the public. However, certain people at NOAA continually sabotage this aspect of NOAA's mandate. For example, these people have (deliberately) sabotaged the web-page that delivers the temperature records.

Look for yourself:

Go to the page: https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/monitoring-references/faq/anomalies.php scroll down to the The Global Anomalies and Index Data section and click the download button and see what happens. Well, you get the message:

"Not Found. The requested URL /monitoring-references/faq/anomalies-download was not found on this server."

I guess that the 2017 data must be truly horrible if they have to hide it away.

Have you ever put a water bottle or any other kind of bottled liquid in the freezer and let it freeze? The frozen water expands the bottle and, at times, the liquid gets squeezed out the opening. I am more inclined to believe that Sea level would drop if all of the ice melted. Ever hear the term tip of the iceberg? Most of the iceberg is under water. SAme with ice cubes. When water is frozen, it swells inside the tray.

Slack Jack's picture

Nearly all of the ice is land-based, so when it melts it adds to sea-level.

chestergimli's picture

#1-Greenland and Antarctica where most of this land based ice is headquartered are smallllll when compared to the HUGE oceans-3/5ths at least of the earth’s surface-combined with the fact that at least 3/4 of this ice when melted combined with all of these icebergs worldwide and all of the shelf ice when melted, I definitely believe that the water level would drop. I think that geological changes-such as earthquakes, continental drift, etc.,- will explain the inundation of all of these ancient cities and land masses of the past. Just think, several inches of snow are needed to make one inch of water-I once heard 12 inches probably of fresh snow. If anything, the water level would remain the same.

lucitanian's picture

Couldn't agree more, what is most worrying is that the duped and propagandized are happy to maintain their ignorance and further support false facts, while cherry picking at the massive data to find any doubt that might support their contrary and totally unscientific views.

That policy and appointments are based on such populist nonsense in the face of the vast accumulation of scientifically researched and verified data based on facts, is, and will be the undoing of a generally dumbed-down society which is the USA.

Yes, there are flat earthers and religious fanatics who believe that the world is only 7,000 years old because there good book said so, despite all verifiable evidence to the contrary and the man made climate change deniers are not any different. No one in their right mind would let the former decide policy with their harebrained ideas, so why are so many idiots accepting the latter.

A guess one's right to an opinion has morphed into one's right to remain stupid and be proud of it.

Yes, by all means let's impose draconian taxes and policy controls based on a trivially small sample size.  Hysterical people rarely make good policy choices.  Politicians never do. The Global Warming scam is a product of bought-and-paid-for pseudo-scientists crabbing for research grants, as the emails at East Anglia clearly demonstrate.  It is nothing but a cover for a massive resource grab.  Good luck w/your New Religion, though.

there is no convincing alternative explanation supported by the extent of the observational evidence.:

How about the millions of years of archeological evidence? How about the ice core samples showing more CO2 in the atmosphere with colder temperatures than today? How about the the fact that the oldest ice core sample only dates back 2.7M years. 2.7M years ago there was zero ice on the planet. Therfore it is conclusive that the earth naturally warms and cools. And where is the evidence that determines how much of the current carbon dioxide is from naturally occuring sources such as under sea volcanic vents vs man made combustion of oil and natural gas.

The ozone hole was completely different than AGW. It was a real issue (the hole existed, and was definitely caused by CFCs through known chemistry), and it was addressed, and it became a non-issue.

AGW, on the other hand, attempts to reduce the entire climate of the planet down to a one variable factor, despite the fact that that variable is two orders of magnitude less significant than water vapor, which we effect in NUMEROUS ways, but isn't as sexy because it doesn't destroy the planet.

peddling-fiction's picture

Two orders of magnitude is not even close.

Look at the following image: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/7c/Atmospheric_Transmis...

Chupacabra-322's picture

There are two issues here - pollution and climate change - and they may have little to do with each other.  No one denies that pollution is driven by human activity and is harmful to both health, property and the environment in general and should be curtailed.  We can all agree that polluters are trespassers.

Climate change comprised of warming and cooling has been around as long as the earth has had a climate and is driven by solar activity and the molten matter beneath the earth's crust.  To now attribute climate change to human carbon dioxide generating activity is to introduce dangerous speculation based on computer model projections decades into the future.  This will lead to the "science is settled" calls for global taxation and central planning powers to curb CO2 emissions.

Ernst Georg Beck cataloged REAL-time CO2 measurements going back 200 years and PROVED with those measurements that "global warming" is a LIE.  He PROVED that in periods of increased industrial output (and hence more CO2 output), the weather got colder, not warmer.  The FACT that CO2 levels are driven by temperature changes and do not CAUSE temperature changes is an accepted scientific fact.  The planet warms first, and 800 to 1000 years later, CO2 levels rise.

Scientific studies conducted 100 years ago proved CO2 was ineffectual as a greenhouse gas. The AVERAGE climate for the planet is MUCH warmer and MUCH wetter than it is now. The climate we are experiencing in this era is COLDER and DRIER than Earth's average climate. The AVERAGE CO2 level for about the last 500 MILLION years has been 1600 ppm, FOUR TIMES the present level. NOT by coincidence, 1600 PPM is OPTIMUM for plant life and hence ANIMAL life and OUR life.

We have too long allowed ourselves to be manipulated by fear into allowing the state's self-serving "experts" into frightening us into the never ending wars on drugs and terrorism for the benefit of the industries profiting from these unwinnable wars.  The war on climate change - a war on what the earth has been doing for eons - will be a forever war justifying the micro management by a vast, bureaucracy of all human activity.  Welcome to the Soviet Union on steroids!  If the "science is settled" crowd is wrong and the earth's climate keeps changing, will they voluntarily give up their unlimited taxing and planning powers?  Nope.  As always central planning failures lead to demands for more money and power.  Is this what we want?
