"This Is Crazy" - Antarctic Supervolcano Is Melting The Ice-Caps From Within

Tyler Durden's picture

As we’ve pointed out, the supervolcano phenomenon is hardly unique to Yellowstone National Park, where a long dormant volcano with the potential to cause a devastating eruption has been rumbling since mid-summer, making some scientists uneasy.

Surprisingly active supervolcanos have been documented in Italy, North Korea and, now, Antarctica after scientists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) have found new evidence to support a theory that the breakup of Antarctic ice may be caused in part by a massive geothermal heat source, with output close to the scale of Yellowstone National Park.

Of course, if accurate, this theory would help rebut the notion that man-made climate change is in part responsible for the melting ice, Russia Today reports.

A geothermal heat source called a mantle plume, a hot stream of subterranean molten rock that rises through the Earth's crust, may explain the breathing effect visible on Antarctica's Marie Byrd Land and elsewhere along the massive ice sheet.

While the mantle plume is not a new discovery, the recent research indicates it may explain why the ice sheet collapsed in a previous era of rapid climate change 11,000 years ago, and why the sheet is breaking up so quickly now.

"I thought it was crazy. I didn't see how we could have that amount of heat and still have ice on top of it," said Hélène Seroussi of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

Seroussi and Erik Ivins of JPL used the Ice Sheet System Model (ISSM), a mathematical depiction of the physics of ice sheets developed by scientists at JPL and the University of California, Irvine. Seroussi then tweaked the ISSM to hunt for natural heat sources as well as meltwater deposits.

This warm water lubricates the ice sheet from below, allowing glaciers to slide off into the sea. Studying meltwater in western Antarctica may allow scientists to estimate how much ice will be lost in future.

During their initial work, Seroussi and Ivins created simulations using higher heat flows than 150 milliwatts per square meter, which did not align with their space-based readings, except for one area: The Ross Sea.

Their calculations showed that, in certain sections of the sea, a heat flow of at least 150-180 milliwatts was required to create sufficient meltwater flows that matched with observations. They now believe the mantle plume is responsible for these higher-than-average readings.

The Marie Byrd Land mantle plume formed 50 to 110 million years ago, predating the Western Antarctic ice sheet. The mantle plume theory was initially proposed 30 years ago, but it’s not the only theory. Another posits that the sheer weight of the ice sheets causes melting deep below the surface.

It's not volcanoes or "climate change", it's an abrupt climate shift triggered in no small part by GLOBAL CLIMATE ENGINEERING, which threatens all life on Earth.

Nothing else matters until this ends.  Because if it doesn't, we will no longer be firing on every neuron and there will be no food or water left.  EVERYTHING ELSE is an utter distraction - even the economic stuff, and especially the political theatre.

Get educated on this issue and share this information with others.

When you can't predict next year's weather, how can you know what the effect of 1 degree C will be?  Isn't it kind of convenient that all future preditions are bad as if there is a known optimal temperature?  This Antarctic melting was reported as due to volcanic activity at least a couple years ago by a University of Texas grad student and was pretty much ignored.

Answer one point as I've not seen it anywhere, where is the smoothing for the Canadian North accounted for? Used to be stations every 250KM squared and now we're north of 1200KM squared. My brother, MWO with the Canadian Armed Forces, helped hump gear from such to CFB Winnipeg and Superbase. Happened about the time they wanted to shutter CFS Alert.

I find the reactions to climate change news fascinating, or any scientific topic really. Your average ZH poster does not see any problems with drawing firm scientific conclusions from intuition in the complete absence of any rigorous study, critical thinking, or thorough analysis of the facts. Science is hard, critical thinking is hard, education is hard and takes years of effort. You won't be an expert by looking at a few posts from your favorite "denier" website, nor will I be one from a quick read of anything.  I'm pretty sure that CO2 levels are rising as stated, and that the earth's average temperature is rising (i.e. as cited by Slack Jack above). Now, just to appeal to your life experience. What is more likely, that a bunch of nerdy scientists are so eager to make money (or so eager to mislead) that they collude and conspire to misreport readings of temperature  or CO2, or to alarm the public? Or is it more likely that money-grubbing asshole oil company execs spend money to denigrate scientists and dispute scientific fact in order to squeeze out a few more dollars while civilization marches off a cliff? I find the latter more plausable.

Oldwood's picture

Our threat is not climate, solar Ray's, North Korea, China or communism.

Our threat is the loss of trust in our institutions that creates such a level of cynicism that we believe NOTHING, effectively blinding us to ALL threats beyond what we can prove with our own eyes. Science, math, NOTHING outside of our immediate grasp is trusted, and with damn good reason. We have been abused endlessly by those in power that aside from their own personal agendas, have rationalized that lying, coercion, manipulation and direct threat is justifiable for our own interests.

The ends ALWAYS justifying the means. But what has happened is the internet, which has exposed them as well as amplified our general lack of trust in anything, for some not even now able to trust what we see and touch with our own eyes.

They have destroyed our civilization as surely as a cheating spouse destroys their marriage.

The foundation of every relationship is TRUST, and their is no greater relationship than society. They have destroyed that and now, by forcing multiculturalism down our throats they have put a nail in it. No trust, no sense of common values, purpose or agenda.

techpriest's picture

Since I actually spent some time getting a PhD in chemical engineering, with a dissertation topic on renewable technology, and since ChemE means a lot of contact with the oil industry, I'll give you a little insight:

The greenies and the "oil" execs are on the same side.

You know why? Because there is no such thing as oil companies. They are ENERGY companies, and any new law that makes it impossible to enter unless you are a huge player is their main concern.

As one "oil" company exec explained to me "I don't care what the law is or what the new fuel is supposed to be, just tell me what the prices of everything be under the new rules. I'll adjust the technoeconomic models, change the investments, and keep making money." Its the same reason why tobacco companies go along with anti-smoking legislation: they can crush their small competitors.

When the first Ethanol Bust rolled around during 2009, the first people to run in and buy it all up where the "oil" companies. They got great government-built facilities (think about how companies like Solyndra got their funding) for 30 cents on the dollar, and they cornered the renewable fuel/RIN market. Big Ag went along with it because it secured a huge customer for their corn, and Big Green loved that they could maintain the pretense that they were "Making a difference."

"2016 is the hottest year on record for global temperatures."

Which actually doesn't have much significance in the geological record, as modern human record keeping only goes back to the 1880's coming out of the very cold period of the Little Ice Age. If modern human records went back to the Roman or Minoan warming periods, 2016 wouldn't have been anything close to the hottest year on record.

@Slack Jack

It's good to be passionate about something, but you need to be careful.  If you give people bullshit 0.001% scenarios, they won't believe you no matter how loudly you shout it.

Your sea level rise claims are wildly inflated, you'll want to back off of it significantly.  Any model that projects more than one meter of sea level rise in a century is extremely suspect.  A meter is still bad, but it's not going to be over the head of lady liberty.  Additionally, there is no scientific evidence that this year's hurricanes or wildfires were made better or worse by the less-than-one-degree of Anthropogenic global warming.

If you want to convince people that Global Warming exists or is a problem then you need to start by being intellectually honest about what the problem is.  Raving about a broken link on a website just makes you look like a fool.

Clearly the answer is to import more third-worlders so they can generate first-world carbon footprints.

If there truly was a concensus that humans can actually make a material difference in the trend of what’s characterized as the most important issue EVER, then isn’t it strange that Earth First, Sierra Club, etc. aren’t vocal, even vociferous opponents of such migratory flows?

Gee, I thought all the melting was from all us useless eaters breathing/exhaling and farting all the time, and that if we paid quadrillions in taxes to Al Gore and gave up things like air conditioning and cars or if we killed off 6.5 billion of ourselves then the planet would be saved????  what a let down.

Ya ever notice that all the "folks" that tell the rest of us "folks" that we need to give up everything and die off are never the first ones willing to give up everything and kill themselves off first?????

They don't give up their lavish lifestyles...they don't take poisonous vaccinations or allow their own kids to get them....they don't sterilize themselves for the good of humanity or to save the fucking planet.

Naaaaahhhhhhhhh......that's for all the rest of us to do....those scumbags think that if they're the ones to say it first then they exempt themselves from having to do it so that they can wallow in their hypocrisy from their fascist pedestals high above all us peasants.

I say we ask Prez Trump for a new Executive Order:

Anyone preaching for everyone else to give up our shit or to reduce population to "save" the planet by law will have to step up first with their entire family, give all their shit over to the Gubment and then throw themselves into a fucking volcano.

That said, "Clif" is very entertaining and his idea of Big Data mining is quite popular these days, also among the spooks. But "Clif" takes it further: He thinks that the (dumber than mud) public is prescient in their Facebook and other babblings. Real prophets - right up there with the Saints.

I think it might be clever to do as little as possible to change or affect our climate system, until we have gathered enough information and knowledge to be able to predict all possible effects of any action taken.

So none of these retards considered this before? It really makes you wonder how these dumbasses can even find their way to the poles.

Countrybunkererd's picture

They can't.  It is just a very well funded vacation/cruise in a colder climate.  They don't know the difference.  Their discomfort of limited water, core and water samples every 15 minutes and whatnot is unfounded but at least it keeps them from real vacation spots where normal people tend to be.  Then again, the cost to all of us... no it is CERTAINLY worth it, I don't want to go to jail for punching some dumbass "researcher" in the face...twice.
