Facebook Founder Warns "God Only Knows What It's Doing To Kids' Brains"

Tyler Durden's picture

38-year-old founding president of Facebook, Sean Parker, was uncharacteristically frank about his creation in an interview with Axios. So much so in fact that he concluded, Mark Zuckerberg will probably block his account after reading this.

Confirming every 'big brother' conspiracy there is about the social media giant, Parker explained how social networks purposely hook users and potentially hurt our brains...

"When Facebook was getting going, I had these people who would come up to me and they would say, 'I'm not on social media.' And I would say, 'OK. You know, you will be.' And then they would say, 'No, no, no. I value my real-life interactions. I value the moment. I value presence. I value intimacy.' And I would say, ... 'We'll get you eventually.'"

"I don't know if I really understood the consequences of what I was saying, because [of] the unintended consequences of a network when it grows to a billion or 2 billion people and ... it literally changes your relationship with society, with each other ... It probably interferes with productivity in weird ways. God only knows what it's doing to our children's brains."

"The thought process that went into building these applications, Facebook being the first of them, ... was all about: 'How do we consume as much of your time and conscious attention as possible?'"

"And that means that we need to sort of give you a little dopamine hit every once in a while, because someone liked or commented on a photo or a post or whatever. And that's going to get you to contribute more content, and that's going to get you ... more likes and comments."

"It's a social-validation feedback loop ... exactly the kind of thing that a hacker like myself would come up with, because you're exploiting a vulnerability in human psychology."

"The inventors, creators — it's me, it's Mark [Zuckerberg], it's Kevin Systrom on Instagram, it's all of these people — understood this consciously. And we did it anyway."

In this 'confessional', it appears Parker has become "something of a conscientious objector" on social media.

Howeever , as Axios notes, Parker ends with just enough crazy to make you wonder...

"Because I'm a billionaire, I'm going to have access to better health care so ... I'm going to be like 160 and I'm going to be part of this, like, class of immortal overlords. [Laughter]

Because, you know the [Warren Buffett] expression about compound interest. ... [G]ive us billionaires an extra hundred years and you'll know what ... wealth disparity looks like."

Reality causes pain. The depression comes from a mismatch of patterns in the mind of the individual. When their image of reality gets disturbed, they get disturbed.  It's a battle for the mind.

It's probably more accurate to say TRUTH causes the pain. People have constructed their "reality" outside the truth.

freedogger's picture

The ironic thing about this article is that these dopamine feedback cycles are in play here in the comment section of ZH just as much as in Facebook. I'll be checking back frequently to see if I get any up arrows.

Speak for yourself. Checking back on votes is about as feminine and milque toast as a man can get.

Check your testosterone levels man.

Protip: Lift, eat paleo and stop giving a fuck about what soyboys, SJWs and entitled feminsts think.

"Does it (ZH) make people depressed..."

As a sample size of 1, my reply is yes.

But having never been there before, I decided to give it a try.

And now?  Everything else in life looks rosy, so thanks ZH,

and don't forget to "Donate Moar"!

ZH is a site I would pay money to belong to.  It is essential to understand the psychology of the markets and the politicians and public perception when you are a trader. Also, you have to have a thick skin to live in this world and be informed.  If it depresses anyone they can always put their head in the sand spend their time on Facebook. lol

joak's picture

What depresses me is to know how many people live their life without being informed and prepared.

Your depression make me happy.

Zoloft & Ritalin-fuelled MSM is 1000x more depressing than Doom Porn/ZH... reality is an anti-depressant, IMO.

ZH and many "Conservative" talkshow hosts (Limbaugh, Hannity, Alex Jones, etc) are all exploiting the same thing for their own profits:

They tap into and also feed Anger, Indignation and Rage. You never feel "good" after a session with them. You only feel more Anger, Indignation or Rage. They turn you into junkies of negative emotion: into Rage Junkies

Most churches do the opposite, and try to turn you into Bliss Junkies

The Left is doing the same thing, resulting in various groups of extremism: Antifa, LGBT...

America is an Addict Nation: an Addiction for everyone. As long as you put money into the pockets of the addiction vendors. Controlled Sheeple.

Turning off the TV and tuning into a Rage site is not the solution. That's merely Substitution of addictions. This is covered in a scene with Ed Norton in Fight Club: Addiction Group junkies.

I realize that I too am getting addicted to something unhealthy, unproductive and unprofitable, with an increasing number of blog posts. Why seem to have no effect anyway -- mostly due to the animosity that my handle and avatar generate. Life is passing me by. Which is why I too should retire from blogging, like so many before me, and focus on being more active locally.

More Engaged, not more Enraged.

Kirk2NCC1701's picture

Ditto. Which is exactly why I retired from ZH and non-stop blogging.

Besides, people don't want the truth. Not even most ZH people. They merely want affirmation of their worldviews.

Eventually you realize: What's the point?  I'm not having an impact, I'm not developing a true human relationship.

To borrow your last line, I'd rather be "less enraged and more engaged".

p.s. Fuck you, HRC!  See what warm, positive reactions your handle evokes?  Change it.

It is possible to forge relationships here. I’ve met a few ZHers face to face. They were great people and we had some really good times. The ZH get togethers by No Debt and Hedgeless Horseman were very successful as well, from what I heard.

Good luck Capt. Kirk. Cheers!

I don't think ZH makes people any more "depressed because of doom porn overload" than.............ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Yahoo, Politico or any other "doom messenger".

Why not at all. I was depressed long before reading and commenting on ZH !

Awakening to the knowledge of how this world really is leads some to end their lives:

The team at the BM Sunwheel Office were saddened to hear of the death of West Midlands racial Nationalist and activist Paul Hickman. Paul Hickman was the broadcaster behind the on-line radio ‘Voice of Albion’ and operated on the internet as ‘Birmingham Nationalist’. Ruthlessly hounded by self-styled anti-fascists, Paul lost his job and struggled to find work, his political activism also drew on to him the unwanted attentions of the State and its agencies. From what little information coming to us here, we are led to believe that Paul Hickman took his own life. A sad situation for someone still in their thirties and a loss to British Nationalism.

Also, from the sidebar at Renegade Broadcasting:

After 2 years of restrictive bail for posting non-PC stickers, being harassed and doxed by antifa and losing his employment, former Renegade host Paul Hickman took his life. RIP.

Listen to Paul’s archives here.

I'm sure Steve Jobs thought so too. Being a vegan, quite trim and having billions to spend on exotic treatments and the best drs, his life supposedly was assured. I keep this in mind when I have an excellent steak, struggle to maintain my figure and occasionally indulge in a great scotch. Enjoy life now or lay on your death bed consumed with regrets.

"Enjoy life now or lay on your death bed consumed with regrets."

Excellent advice, Ma'am.  I'm air-brushing it on the wall ASAP, right next to:

"Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light."

-Dylan Thomas

Lumberjack's picture

I couln’t agree more, Miffed. There once was a time when physicians did a great job and cared about their patients. Now it’s different and hospital management cares less about outcomes much like auto shops and do a half assed job guaranteeing a repeat customer.

Having myself dealt with the hospitals on a professional basis, and knowing first hand how corrupt and intentionally it can be, I can only hope that a real solution can be found. Chunga mentioned something the other day and I agree.

I heard kids don't use FB anymore? But I'm old.

Assume people in their upper 20s and upward do. It destroys their brains and social skills.

I do know a few things about id theft and security. So I abstain.

Facebook Founder Warns "God Only Knows What It's Doing To Kid's Brains"

My response: The AMERICAN society as advanced as it is has failed to recognize the impact that media in general is having on the youth of America

Video and audio perversion is the real OPIOID in America and most parents are brain dead and have no understanding the harm this stuff is doing to kids.

Truly sad.

Anyone watch that COUNTRY MUSIC CRAP LAST NIGHT? Unbelievable is my only thought!!

America is in real trouble.

I didn't think it was bad. In fact, the bit about Trump's tweeting was pretty funny as they played off of Underwood's song, When He Cheats. I found it tasteful satire.

They said nothing I haven't thought, well, except for the tweets about the RINOS like Corker. What a farce everything has become.

Curiously, this so-called VR originator, Jaron Lanier, said much the same thing to the NYTimes, and to of all people, Maureen Dowd.  I'd advise skipping the idiotic video, but the interview is fascinating.  They buried it on the Style page, of course.

I have long felt that FB and other social media platforms are instruments of the devil (no, not literally, but you get my drift).  This guy apparently agrees, to a large degree.

With all due respect, if you're still watching the telewitz, then you're part of the problem and not the solution.

He won't be dead by 65.  Haven't you noticed the evil ones living looooooooong lives?  Kissinger, Soros, Rockefeller.

Rockefeller went through six hearts.

Cabala, Pedofile, child sacrifice, and living looooong is related.  Our ((friends)) have long trafficed in body parts.  I know my accusation is blood libel, but the data is there, and it is coming out more every day.  Legal court cases have also exposed our friends in their past, so we cannot ignore data.

Fetal stem cells REGENERATE old people.

Conclusion: Treatment using FSCs allows correlating internal factors of pre-term fading which result in lower external signs of aging among the patients; that, in bulk, contributes to overall revitalizing and rejuvenation along with inhibiting the rate of aging by way of promoting better life quality and life expectancy among the patients.

> .. [G]ive us billionaires an extra hundred years and you'll know what ...

... the devil looks like. But it won't take that long ... we're well on the way right now.

This tech is the beast system. Lucifer was the 'light bringer' - your phone/computer brings light to your eyeballs and brain. Kurzweil has already predicted the Singularity and is staving off death one day at a time until he can d/l his brain into the machine to become immortal.

And that is the goal. To rid (((themselves))) of the flesh suit ... and then rid the planet of most everything else - machines only need power - no food, no air, no water (except for cooling the machine). Once the human becomes the ghost in the machine, it's over for the human.

(((They))) salivate over this.

Sparkey's picture

Li'll Dirt Ball, The “Singularity” is a fiction which can never be achieved with present technology, human brains and computers are incaculably more unmixable than 'Oil and Water', you will need some new technology, a technology that hasn't even been imagined yet, to do this,,, we are as close to the singularity as a cave man looking at the sky and imagining himself on the Moon was. Will it never happen, while I personally doubt it, one should never say never, but I verymuch doubt Ray Kurzwell will be a beneficiary of it!

lil dirtball's picture

Believe whatever you like. The simple fact of the matter is that we don't know what we don't know - and so I'll take what you say with a grain of salt ... 'cause you don't know either.

But here's an article from 2012 that we do know about:

"A bioengineer and geneticist at Harvard’s Wyss Institute have successfully stored 5.5 petabits of data — around 700 terabytes — in a single gram of DNA, smashing the previous DNA data density record by a thousand times.

The work, carried out by George Church and Sri Kosuri, basically treats DNA as just another digital storage device. Instead of binary data being encoded as magnetic regions on a hard drive platter, strands of DNA that store 96 bits are synthesized, with each of the bases (TGAC) representing a binary value (T and G = 1, A and C = 0)."

If you have something to the contrary, please feel free to post it.

cheech_wizard's picture

Reminds me of typical IBM "FUD" press releases to try to keep their competition in check.

"Hey, look at what we did in the lab."

(Never to be productized...)

lil dirtball's picture

Must be a pretty good topic for tit-for-tat, then:

Scientists use DNA to store MP3, holds 2.2 petabytes per gram

If this was being reported back in 12/13 - where are we now with this supposed meme?

Sparkey's picture

Hi! little Dirt Ball, Thanks for your answer, as you said, I, of course, don't know, I can only say,,I don't believe, and I don't believe, So back to the link and the DNA data storage, does your mind access the info in the gram of DNA or does the machine?

Is the info in your DNA machine readable? Or is our DNA stored and accessed in a way we don't really understand?

The idea of the singularity is right there with the dream of unending Life and the limitless power of money, they already have the money can the money create the rest of the dream? I think we are going to find out! and I can't say it can never happen, but I'm pretty sure it can't happen yet!

All the best Dirt Ball, never give up hope!
