Facebook Founder Warns "God Only Knows What It's Doing To Kids' Brains"

Tyler Durden's picture

38-year-old founding president of Facebook, Sean Parker, was uncharacteristically frank about his creation in an interview with Axios. So much so in fact that he concluded, Mark Zuckerberg will probably block his account after reading this.

Confirming every 'big brother' conspiracy there is about the social media giant, Parker explained how social networks purposely hook users and potentially hurt our brains...

"When Facebook was getting going, I had these people who would come up to me and they would say, 'I'm not on social media.' And I would say, 'OK. You know, you will be.' And then they would say, 'No, no, no. I value my real-life interactions. I value the moment. I value presence. I value intimacy.' And I would say, ... 'We'll get you eventually.'"

"I don't know if I really understood the consequences of what I was saying, because [of] the unintended consequences of a network when it grows to a billion or 2 billion people and ... it literally changes your relationship with society, with each other ... It probably interferes with productivity in weird ways. God only knows what it's doing to our children's brains."

"The thought process that went into building these applications, Facebook being the first of them, ... was all about: 'How do we consume as much of your time and conscious attention as possible?'"

"And that means that we need to sort of give you a little dopamine hit every once in a while, because someone liked or commented on a photo or a post or whatever. And that's going to get you to contribute more content, and that's going to get you ... more likes and comments."

"It's a social-validation feedback loop ... exactly the kind of thing that a hacker like myself would come up with, because you're exploiting a vulnerability in human psychology."

"The inventors, creators — it's me, it's Mark [Zuckerberg], it's Kevin Systrom on Instagram, it's all of these people — understood this consciously. And we did it anyway."

In this 'confessional', it appears Parker has become "something of a conscientious objector" on social media.

Howeever , as Axios notes, Parker ends with just enough crazy to make you wonder...

"Because I'm a billionaire, I'm going to have access to better health care so ... I'm going to be like 160 and I'm going to be part of this, like, class of immortal overlords. [Laughter]

Because, you know the [Warren Buffett] expression about compound interest. ... [G]ive us billionaires an extra hundred years and you'll know what ... wealth disparity looks like."

I agree. Nowadays it functions like "profile data". If you care come talk to me and find out. Naive as these muppets are they'll believe anything on there. It's like the Borg. " You will be assimilated (collectivized), resistance is futile." Fuck em.

Yeah, they aren't going to like having their patrons, the Hollywood and DC elite called out for kiddie shaggery.

the worst that could happen is that FB could reveal our true level of perversion

The key take-home here is that both Parker and Zuck had psychology as their other major.  A perfect fit for intelligence-agency meddling/$funding/oversight, etc.

I get my dopamine hits from doing real shit in the real world.

The whole Facebook premise sorta reminds me of dogs sniffing turds at a big electronic dog park.

Phones phones are screwing with Kids Psychology

"I'll die without my Mobile Phone !"

FarceBook and Twitts just makes people more Anti-Social

Combining the two just makes kids more stupid and Anti-Social

Next time you go to a Restaurant, count how many people are using Mobile Phones playing games or texting.

I don't know why this is such a mystery. Social media along with a lot of other products produced by multimillionaire or billionaire entrepreneurs are quite simply not good for people. Take Rotten Ronalds, Coke, Winston Salem and a host of other products. Do you think that these guys give a shit? Just invest in what works to make money right. Pretty simple. Get rich now and well down the road when all these problems crop up psychophysiologically who cares. Let's use a nice example. My Canadian governments best business model is gambling, drugs and taxes. What separates them from say " a cartel"? Well with a cartel you know that they are criminals. However tell me the real difference at the moment? There is none. In fact I would trust the cartel more than I would trust the government. I have said for a long time and I will keep saying it, be careful what you invest in. No one gives a shit any more what they produce as long as it sells. Socially it is an enormous mistake that we will reap soon enough. These assholes that produce these things should be ashamed but you know shame never enters into the equation. That would mean morals and ethics dictate their reason. Anyway there is a huge storm brewing. Anyone with half a brain can see it. Not financially but within society itself. Good luck.

Does Facebook Offer Developments and Develop Offerings with Virtual Gifts/Heavenly Tools?

I use Facebook as a dump, because I'm too lazy to bother with passwords and other nonsense (Zerohedge exempted) and so use Facebook as a portal for comments.  I then contribute that which everyone has at least one of and move on.   I find commenting a bit of contributing to an historical record, while knowing that the world will turn on.

Thanks God I'm not part of that cult.

Teens 18 & under don't even use FB. My son has a 24X7 conversation with his group of friend (high school seniors)  on his phone. But they are on snapchat. I can't find anything on the internet on him and his friends. They are a lot different then the millenials. Much more private.

The stupid is very well funded folks. When you think about it for a bit you might find cutting off their funding is the best thing that could happen.

The stall and barter. Then some real justice. Followed by some first class hangins.

Another "No shit, Sherlock" revelation. Guess what? No, you didn't get me! It's my warfare on friends and relatives that try to apply social pressure on me to join. Oh, add employers too. I quickly saw what suckbook was about. Yes, it changed social interaction. People life virtual lives now. Likes became validation.

Jezus, dude. What a mess you created. Fuck suckbook. Call me! We'll meet up and socialize. Stuff suckbook up your ass. Stop hiding behind a screen where 80% of human commication gets lost. You know... Tone of speach, body language, etc get lost in the "white noise". Sorry, but that's how it is. Smug fuck. You didn't get me and I'm one such called "millennial".

Internet is good for learning. The library is at your home now. Good for debating ideas and factual stuff. Sucks for " social" interaction. There is NOTHING social about it!

Not a perfect analogy, but Facebook is to the Internet what Television was to Books and Newspapers.  At least the walled garden that was AOL served to introduce the world to the Internet (granted, if AOL would have realized what they were enabling, they would have granted access to the Internet-at-Large in a way that sustained their brand and revenue rather than undermining it wholly and completely) where Facebook is on the opposite end of the spectrum (leveraging the experience garnered from AOL, MySpace, et al), herding the masses into another (far more insidious) walled garden.

Humanity is evolving and will continue to, but as with symbolism, speech, writing, the printing press, the telegraph, radio, etc., it will take many years and decades before humanity fully adapts to mentally triaging the increasing levels of data, immediacy and unfiltered bullshit.  It's a bit of an arms race for the soul of humanity right now and Facebook seems to be winning... for this moment in time at least.

amadeus39's picture

Nice, but "herding the masses" has a communal quality about it.

brushhog's picture

So they created a product that keeps people coming back for more...whats that make them villains? You're responsible for yourselves. You're responsible for your own actions and feeling ( yes feelings too ). If you cant control yourself then you should be put away.

I choose not to do facebook or social media, nobody came to my house to force me. You cant say "I want freedom" out of one side of your mouth and then say "Im a victim of my own choices" out of the other. If you cant control your choices then they have to be made for you, and there is a whole mass of government schemers and elitists that are just all too happy to make those decisions for you.

Personal responsibility and freedom are two sides of the same coin. You cannot have one without the other.

Vageling's picture

While I completely agree. Looked around lately? "Muh victimrole" Idiots. Responsibility? Isn't that some .gov thing? Shouldn't God the .gov shield me? Tell me what to do, what's political correct... I need to get my fix on farcebook, instagram, netflix and whatever is out there!

Wut..? Who's our prime minister? Yeah... Some dude. Trump? Evil! But can't tell you why... Mohammed bin Salmon? He's the prophet, right? The robbermint? That's the messiah!

Buncha clowns. Stuck in their dogma.

It's indeed pathetic. And dangerous. We woke ones need only to concern with each other. The rest are zombies.

Id like to see the technologies all deweaponized. It might be easier to do this then most people think. Maybe a real debate forum not very different than what happens on ZH. Just like what FB and these others are doing but with a nice twist. Integrity and accountability. Thats what made FB and the rest so toxic. PC rules not reason or logic.

On a level field the truth should win out most of the time. Thats why they ban so many people. They are banning the truth tellers not just the non PC folks. They were used as an excuse to ban truth tellers that can, will and do back their shit up.

If we had an open debate forum between friendly rivals like ZH and the old market ticker. One topic one respected moderator agreed on by both groups. Preferably with no dog in the race when possible.

I suspect it would catch on fast. Picking up steam as people found honesty and integrity a comfort rather than a scary thing. People really do fear the truth. Mostly because they are very used to being lied to.

Lets see if FB can compete with that! There are alot of cats Id love to catch on a level field.

mrvco's picture

"debate" is the problem. There can be no winners without losers.  Unfettered, umoderated debate is a competition that only ends up breeding toxicity pitting city folk against country folk, rich folk against poor folk, the whole "Us vs Them" crap... two (or more) completely different perspectives and ways of living one's life and the goal shouldn't be arguing one to invalidate the other.

The goal should be "discussion", "dialogue" or whatever it is that helps us to understand one another's persepctives.

VWAndy's picture

You sound like a pussy. Man up Sally. We talking truths not feelings.

We would be hurting peoples feelings. Thats the whole fucking point!

amadeus39's picture

Yeah. We need to hurt more feelings. Feelings are for sissies. We didn't have feelings when we crawled out of caves and swung down from trees. Where and why the hell did "feelings" come into existence?  We need to boycott "feelings" that are preventing us from finding truths. I propose a national moratorium on all "feelings" until a committee can be formed to determine if "feelings" are part of a conspiracy to undermine our precious bodily fluids.

Kids brains? See my wifes ups and downs every day on FaceBook. Its like a damn drama.

RDouglas's picture

I’ll tell you what Facebook is doing to the kids brains, not very fucking much. It’s people my age, 50; and older millennial‘s that are still using Facebook. My son is 21 years old, and there is definitely a cultural movement amongst he and his peers to put the phone away. When we get together for a meal, he and his girlfriend are the ones that ARENT looking at their phones my wife and I and our parents have a tendency to pull them out regularly. On the flipside, I almost never see my son without Skullcandy jammed into his ears, and I wonder what all of that alt-folk music is doing to his brain. Can’t be pretty.
