Paul Craig Roberts Laments "I Don't Recognize My Country Today"

Tyler Durden's picture

Authored by Paul Craig Roberts,

Having grown up during the second half of the 20th century, I don’t recognize my country today. I experienced life in a competent country, and now I experience life in an incompetent country.

Everything is incompetent.

The police are incompetent. They shoot children, grandmothers, cripples, and claim that they feared for their life.

Washington’s foreign policy is incompetent. Washington has alienated the world with its insane illegal attacks on other countries. Today the United States and Israel are the two most distrusted countries on earth and the two countries regarded as the greatest threat to peace.

The military/security complex is incompetent. The national security state is so incompetent that it was unable to block the most humiliating attack in history against a superpower that proved to be entirely helpless as a few people armed with box cutters and an inability to fly an airplane destroyed the World Trade Center and part of the Pentagon itself. The military industries have produced at gigantic cost the F-35 that is no match for the Russian fighters or even for the F-15s and F-16s it is supposed to replace.

The media is incompetent. I can’t think of an accurate story that has been reported in the 21st century. There must be one, but it doesn’t come to mind.

The universities are incompetent. Instead of hiring professors to teach the students, the universities hire administrators to regulate them. Instead of professors, there are presidents, vice presidents, chancellors, vice chancellors, provosts, vice provosts, assistant provosts, deans, associate deans, assistant deans. Instead of subject matter there is speech regulation and sensitivity training. Universities spend up to 75% of their budgets on administrators, many of whom have outsized incomes.

The public schools have been made incompetent by standardized national testing. The purpose of education today is to pass some test. School accreditation and teachers’ pay depend not on developing the creativity or independent thinking of those students capable of it, but on herding them through memory work for a standardized test.

One could go on endlessly.

Instead, I will relate a story of everyday incompetencies that have prevented me from writing this week and for a few more days yet.

Recently, while away from my home, a heavy equipment operator working on a nearby construction site managed to drive under power lines with the fork lift raised. Instead of breaking the wire, it snapped the pole in half that conveyed electric power to my house. The power company came out, or, as I suspect, an outsourced contractor, who reestablished power to my home but did not check that the neutral wire was still attached. Consequently for a week or so my house experienced round the clock surges of high voltage that blew out the surge protection, breaker box, and every appliance in the house. Expecting my return, the house was inspected, and the discovery was that there was no power. Back came the power company and discovered that high voltage was feeding into the house and had destroyed everything plugged in.

So. Here we have a moron operating heavy equipment who does not understand that he cannot drive under power lines with the lift raised. We have a power company or its outsourced contractor who does not understand that power cannot be reconnected without making certain that the neutral wire is still connected.

So every appliance is fried. Glass everywhere from blown out light bulbs. We are talking thousands of dollars.

This is America today.

And the incompetents ruling incompetents want war with Iran, Korea, Russia, China. Considering the extraordinary level of incompetence throughout the United States, I guarantee you that we will not win these wars.

Pretty sure PCR doesn't buy the official story; however, when using the official story as the baseline, it certainly does make the US security apparatus, whatever it may be, look like an order of magnitude beyond the Keystone Cops.

Thanks for clarifying that for us, Paul.

With names of three, propaganda it'd be.

Mr. Universe's picture

Propaganda? Two party system or all Kabuki theater all the time?

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) tweeted on Thursday, “The allegations against Roy Moore are deeply disturbing and disqualifying. He should immediately step aside and allow the people of Alabama to elect a candidate they can be proud of.”

So what the Senator is saying is that allegations are enough to disqualify you...if you ain't in the club that is. This isn't some libtard attack dog, it's a bleeping GOP senator, perhaps definative proof the brain tumour has taken over.

If we live in an age when allegations are enough to go to war with Russia, then, by gum,

allegations are enough to disqualify a fanny tapper.

incompetent? because of 9-11?

The military/security complex and media is incompetent?

...they have you actually believing that the national security state is so incompetent that it was unable to block the most humiliating attack in history against a superpower that proved to be entirely helpless as a few people armed with box cutters and an inability to fly an airplane destroyed the World Trade Center and part of the Pentagon itself...

who's the one who's actually incompetent?

its incompetence-by-design ...

orchestrated incompetence to make you complacement, lethargic, and divided; susceptible to social validation, consumer gratification, and sensationalized political distractions; and, 'unable to recognize your country,' and therefore no longer able to care

francis scott falseflag's picture

To tell the truth, I actually believe that China, Russia, and the US made a pact

a couple of decades ago to divide the world into three blocks, each block

composed of the circle of influence of each of those afore mentioned countries.

Today they are pretending to destroy previously agreed to segments of each other's

hegemon,  until the all the troublemakers are culled and the population is

sufficiently reduced, necessary resources are husbanded, and, most

importantly, global warming, the result of the gonadal warming we got in high school

(if you get my drift), has a lid put on it again.

Only then will we be able to rowrow our boat. Gently down the stream,

Merrily merrily, merrily, merrily. Life is but a dream.  Nicht wahr, Laowei?

“The media is incompetent.”

PCR, sir…..

I submit that “negligent” ….” grossly negligent”,,,,  and criminally…..   is more apropos.

Wiki read some James M. Buchanan and Public Choice Theory.  In short, the incentive of buerocrats is to make problems worse, the securing their income.

SybilDefense's picture

On top of that, the beaurocrats get to devise the plan on how much they will take from your annual income, instead of we the people saying "we will give you X % for addressing Y issues/promises. And those extra gubment jobs you created for yourselves, well they got to go!"

Hey treasury: WE will give YOU %20 taxes on our reportable income, filed on a postcard.  In five years it goes to %15%.  That's what your constituents whom you work for have awarded.  If you can't make it with your current staff size, we advise that you pare accordingly.  If the issues are that important feel free to work on them without pay, as a public servant.  Any increase or extra funding for a war must be voted on by the people for whom you are employed.

Step one, audit the Fed

Step two, eliminate the Fed.

Next?!

Paul, sorry to hear about how your home's electrical stuff got fried by high voltage surges.  The obvious question in these paranoid times: Was someone sending you a message? I mean, if you read many of the comments here, you would think most people are borderline illiterates.  That is not the case at other sites, like the comment section of the Daily Mail, where there are fewer trolls.  It is probably an accident, especially if it happened on a Monday.  Unlike the way houses with fireproof terra cotta roof tiles in Southern California caught fire when those same roof tiles ignited.  The video link below blames a microwave particle beam weapon directed at the high iron content red roof tiles, causing the tiles to ignite.

Holy F……

Last week I suffered a massive transient issue…..

My upstairs stuff was well protected, but there was a 15A circuit breaker downstairs that got tripped which killed  the AC primary pump and subsequently drained the marine battery supplied BU……

Well,  6 inches of water down there has occupied a lot of my time…

I went to a store and bought big rubber boots  and put on rubber gloves…..

It's the reason why the first responders did not need to come over and fish (fried) me out.

I have learned a lot about water remediation since then.

I am now expert at how one takes totally submerged electrtical motors and tools and restores them.

..and oh.. oh ..oh

Pinesol commercial (purple) disinfectant works pretty damn good if you have the same problem someday.

Any good electrical engineer will know how to install an instantanious "crowbar" industrial strength surge protector.

Sounds like you need that!

Omen IV's picture

youre right it is IQ - similiar story as PCR -

Florida - install a Cable and Internet connection - simple process with existing system in place - and it took "two" visits - clearly according to second service provider - was not checking the connections

NYC - "three" visits to discover the source of low mphs transmission via ethernet -  broken cable -  first two couldnt find it because they didnt know how to look

The country is slowly breaking down as hiring practices change to low IQ / Affirmative Action Agenda / Low Wage Alternatives

the politicians say they want immigration illegal and refugees to lower the cost of labor but the productivity is going thru the floor. China has low labor cost but hight IQ people - the black and brown are seriously below 85 IQ - the USA even with better exchange rates and lower labor cost will never beat the Chinese with this strategy

The US Military as shown in SE Asia ships collisions to include the USS McCain frigate was labor error - personnel to blame

we are headed for a major disaster

BTW, you got to hire dolts in the trades cause the work force has been robbed by talent moving from productive work to deep state paper shuffling administration, paid by Federal Reserve fiat. Real productive work is too dirty, hot, cold, dusty, dangerous,  loud and isn't secure, soft, easy as office employment.   So...the empire grinds down and the eunics wonder.

Social Security is not free for anyone. Everyone except those making over $127,200 per year pays either 7.5% or 15% into the so-called trust fund on every dime they earn, depending on whether they are an employee or self-employed. The freebies—free rent, free food, monthly cash assistance, energy assistance and child tax credits of between $3,337 and $6,269–are going to childbearing-age people to reward sex and reproduction, mostly out of wedlock in this era.

Incompetence is there because employers just churn people, never keeping people long enough to train them adequately, and they prefer to churn the people who actually come to work every day, staying the whole day and meeting the quotas every month, over their fellow, frequently absentee, backscratching parents.

They do that because the parents have unearned income from spouses or welfare/taxfare that makes the low pay acceptable. They also do it because of cronyism and competition.

Only a few managers are retained for any length of time in most jobs, and it is in their interest not to keep competent people long, especially in the many workplaces with backwatching-absenteeism gangs. I am talking about parents taking off whole mornings, whole afternoons (every afternoon), whole weeks and whole months beyond PTO and multiple, government-mandated pregnancy leaves. I am talking about people who leave work at the times of day with the most activity from paying customers,

I have worked in many places with massive rates of employee turnover, where mom-gang workers took off a ton of time, watching each other’s backs, and I have only seen only ONE mom fired.....one That was for all-day, everyday absenteeism in a management position. She was still retained far longer than most employees, and when she was finally fired, the fact that she had children was lamented by people who seemed to feel guilty about firing her in a setting with a ton of other employee turnover.

There are a handful of very competent mom workers. Some are absentee a lot. Some aren’t. I could understand if employers overlooked some things for super-competent people. Most of the mom workers—the vast majority—are either average or below average in competence AND frequently absentee (for kids, for kids, so they say).

They fret over the one mom fired, but no one worries at all about churning people who come to work every day, stay the whole day, work hard and meet the quotas. They do not care unless they have children.

Thanks to fake feminism and all the constant chatter about working families, work and everything related to it in public policy is now all about womb productivity instead of work productivity.

Meanwhile, there is less competence in parenting all the time.

These moms are huge and blatant bullies in workplaces. Who knows how much verbal bullying goes on in their homes? If I had a dollar to bet, I’d say a lot.

They use their children as excuses for everything and as the reason they should be favored massively in the welfare and tax-welfare systems, as well as in workplaces, but they are raising more prisoners and mass shooters than ever before in history.

We have 5% of the world’s population and 25% of its prisoners.

We have a 300% increase in mass shootings in the USA.

Is it really the fault of police that a mom getting about 5 sources of unearned income for reproducing, including free rent, free food, monthly cash assistance and a child tax credit of up to $6,269, is not watching her kid, letting him play on dangerous streets in a dangerous neighborhood with a toy gun that looks just like a real gun?

Is anything ever the fault of someone who has sex and reproduces—a working parent, a glorified working family?

Archibald Buttle's picture

you should apply for a new job. it sounds like the one you have sucks. to be honest, mine sucks too. i think, however, you would maybe fit in at my workplace. most of the sheeple work hard, and yes the mommas are probably getting freebies and extra leeway on the time off, but they put up with me and my absolute refusal to be PC in the workplace. in my work persona (and i have stuck with this for years, the newbies are horrified at first), i say all kids should be shipped to camps in siberia until they turn 18, then released into polite socety.

i will give you a good referral if you are interested.

If people under 50 had their act together, they'd lead the way out of this mess, but they are just as clueless, ignorant of that fact that debt is slavery.  The gargantuan, nation-destroying debt just keeps mushrooming like there's no tomorow, guaranteeing America's accelerating decline and fall.
