Be Careful What You Sniff In Canada

Tyler Durden's picture

A new crisis is developing in Canada and it’s not the housing bubble.

A far more sinister one, that is taking the country by storm, as a new wave of fentanyl has washed up on the shores of Canada from an unknown origin most likely China, and has made it onto city streets.

To our friends in the business district of Toronto, be - careful what you sniff - it might contain fentanyl.

Here’s why:

The number of positive tests for fentanyl in samples of heroin seized by law enforcement agencies across Canada have exploded. Health Canada’s Drug Analysis Service (DAS) revealed to CBC News that in 2012 .08% of 2,337 heroin samples tested positive for fentanyl. Fast forward to today and that number stands at 60.1% of 3,337 heroin samples, an astronomical jump visualized below.

Seems as China has turned on the fentanyl spigot in 2016 and 2017…

Over the past five-years of tests, marijuana samples seized by law enforcement agencies contained no fentanyl. But on a more interesting note, cocaine and methamphetamine seized by law enforcement agencies reported an increase. A potential health hazard for the modern day bankers in Toronto…..

The most common drugs the service tests for include marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine, fentanyl, heroin, hydromorphone, oxycodone, MDMA, alprazolam and GHB.

Fentanyl was not identified in any of the marijuana samples tested over the five-year period, while cocaine and methamphetamine saw increases from 0.01 per cent to 1.8 per cent and zero per cent to 1.7 per cent, respectively. Overall, the figures are stark. In 2012, only 217 of the street drug samples tested positive for fentanyl. Just as the number of lives claimed by the deadly opioid has skyrocketed since then, so too has the number of times fentanyl has showed up in samples of illegal street drugs. As of Sept. 30, DAS found fentanyl in 4,568 samples this year – an increase of 2,005 per cent.

According to Dr. David Juurlink, head of clinical pharmacology and toxicology at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto:

“...the exponential increase of street drugs testing positive for fentanyl over the last five years doesn’t surprise. The illicit drug supply has never been more dangerous because of the profusion of fentanyl-related compounds. This is why so many people are dying. They’re dying because the drugs they’re using contain, you know, much more opioid than they thought.”

In fact, Juurlink is right as shown below...

Dr. Michael Krausz, a professor of psychiatry specializing in addiction at the University of British Columbia, explains drug dealers “want to save money or make higher profits”, so fentanyl is mixed into drugs like heroin or cocaine to stretch their supplies.

Krausz also said drug dealers are not skilled enough to keep fentanyl doses in a survivable range while mixing it with heroin or cocaine, which is why many experts believe overdoses are occurring. Simply, the end user is not realizing what he/she is getting and ends up dead.

Juurlink said several factors sparked fentanyl’s rise:

  • increase in demand for opioids as overprescription of painkillers led to addiction
  • flood of prescription medication
  • fentanyl patches
  • blackmarket

In British Columbia, 80% of the street drugs are laced with fentanyl. Four mothers who have lost their sons to overdoses advocate for state controlled drugs.

The Globe And Mail explains: Fentanyl’s deadly path

China is a key source of illicit fentanyl coming to Canada in response to demand from prescription-painkiller addicts as well as users of street drugs, traffickers are turning to a pharmaceutical-manufacturing giant to produce deadly, black-market versions of fentanyl, according to the RCMP.

Across Canada, police are seizing illicit fentanyl from China - Three examples from 2015: A package of fentanyl declared as a muffler was stopped on its way to Calgary; a man in Brampton, Ont., was charged with importing more than 500 grams of the drug; and a parcel destined for Halifax was found to contain 514 grams, worth about $1-million.

Once the drug is in, it is processed – often in Western Canada - Because illicit fentanyl and fentanyl analogues are so potent, the white powder is cut or mixed with other drugs and fillers, before it can be sold on the street. Most of the 21 clandestine labs dismantled by police since 2013 operated in British Columbia and Alberta, according to a Globe and Mail analysis.

Bootleg fentanyl is highly lucrative - The math works like this, according to Edmonton physician Hakique Virani: A kilogram of pure fentanyl powder costs $12,500. A kilo is enough to make 1,000,000 tablets. Each tab sells for $20 in major cities, for total proceeds of $20-million. In smaller markets, the street price is as high as $80.

Fentanyl has been found in police busts all over the country -  The first known fentanyl seizure in Canada was from a clandestine lab in Montreal in April, 2013. Since then, police have busted traffickers in almost every province and the Northwest Territories, for a total of 58 across the country, according to The Globe’s analysis.

Bottom line: China is flooding North America with fentanyl through shipping routes into Canada. The opioid crisis is far from over and its about to kick into hyperdrive. The one question we ask: how will bankers in Toronto and or on Wall Street deal with the very real possibility their blackmarket stimulants could contain fentanyl?

Fuck fent. Seriously - it’s hard enough to make the case for decriminalizing drugs. Dealers that cut with fent make it that much harder.

I hope they don't start putting it in my scotch.

This is going to play right into more gofundme donations for Libtards to leave for Canada.

"it’s hard enough to make the case for decriminalizing drugs. Dealers that cut with fent make it that much harder."

It doesn't make it harder.  It makes it much easier.  I'm sure many of these people are not actually looking for fentanyl and would be content with regular clean heroin if it were freely available, maybe even morphine or codeine.  Plus in a free market they would know the exact dose they were taking every time.  They take what they can get now and in unknown quantities because the market is not free.  As usual government regulation has all kinds of negative unintended consequences...

unless you think this was actually intended.  Either way the government is wrong.  Prohibition does not and never will work without giving up all of what little freedom we have left.

Fentanyl is what kills off anesthesiologists.  .... and they are usually the bright ones in their medical school classes.  The ampules were always "over full" so nothing was ever noticed until there was a blue corpse in the dressing room.  Fentanyl is really pretty scary.  Welcome to the third opium war....

HillaryOdor's picture

Not as bad as carfentanyl.  But this is what government gives you.

Ban opiates, get fentanyl

Ban alcohol, get Al Capone

Ban pot, get Spice/K2

Ban uppers, get bath salts

One day these dumbfuck voters will learn, probably not until the government completes its total destruction of our standard of living, but one day.  I still have hope... for the very very distant future at least.  In my lifetime we're fucked.

This is China's revenge for the horrific Opium Wars inflicted on them during the mid-19th Century.  The flabby bodies and souls of the West are now ripe for the poppy picking.

Fake fentanyl. Made in China.

revenge?

by killing off our homelessness crisis?

just to be clear since I know the US may not really know as it has its own opiate crisis, so you can't keep up with every crisis everywhere else...

but fentanyl western Canada is very disproportionately effecting the poorest of the poor.

it's probably the social equilevent of Canada selling poisoned moose meet to Uighurs in Xinjiang

Maybe the Chinese want to clean up the land so they could "immigrate" and take over with a minimum of troubles... It's funny how this shit is made in China but the Chinese don't seem to have a fentanyl crisis. It remainds me of all that coke made in Mexico which didn't create a Mexican "consumption" crisis...

Bwana's picture

China does not have a drug problem. If you get caught with more than 25 grams of any illegal drug your trial will be on Monday, your appeal will be on Tuesday and your execution will be on Wednesday. If you have less than 25 grams where they send you will make you wish you had over 25 grams.

auricle's picture

Legalize it and the issue is resolved. It would become pure as the driven snow. No more cutting with dangerous additives.

Toxicosis's picture

Do you mean to tell me that if nothing was banned that people still wouldn't use?  Are you suggesting that there are less alcoholics population adjusted than years previous?  Do you think the chinese who manufacture and distribute worldwide about 40 new designer drugs a month would just stop?  Our civilization loves to escape from reality and personal responsibility, so if we just make everything legal it would all just get better.  Sorry not buying that in our culture.  Maybe in Portugal, but we ain't Portugal.

Bankers, fine..

Unfortunately there will be much spillover into the poor fuckers who are hooked on opiates by the pill pushers at Rockefeller Medicine inc.

The War On Drugs is why this is even a problem. People buy an unknown substance illegally, and it kills them.

Make it legal for 21 years old and up. People will know what they're buying. The gun-toting scum who currently sell unknowable trash will have to open a burrito stand to make money.

Some people will still OD just as they always have, but nowhere near as often, and the black market violence will be cut by at least 80%. Start treating the OD-likely folks as we do any other substance abusers e.g., alcoholics.

And the guy that needs to steal 10 TVs to maintain his habit, if drugs were decriminalized, would only need to steal one.  Still a win!

The crushing need for more tax money will take care of drug legalization here.  Shit, you can get anything you want in a 3rd world pharmacy, no Rx needed. Cuts out the middleman. Try Mexico, pretty much any drug no script.

When I ran a surgery, my Nurse Anesthetist was deeply involved in his trade; when his tales of wasteage caught up with him, he slammed a circulator up against the wall. What happens in the OR stays in the OR, eh? He finally pissed off the wrong person and got caught; he is cutting hair in Arizona now. Or dead.

Well, drugs, alcohol, and other dangerous stuff that people ingest is really natural selection at work.  The stupid take these things despite a huge general awareness that they are toxic to the body and health, yet people clamor for the government (.Gov) to 'save' them from themselves.  I am not sure how bright an anesthesioloist would be to ingest any form of toxic drugs....street drugs or otherwise.  This is part of looking at the western medicine doctors as Gods and Sages where in fact they participate in a paradigm that is largely fraudulent.  So, let them eat cake and die and make the world a better place by removing themselves from the gene pool.  Today's world is generaly a good place to live and evolve IF you are comitted to researching things and making better choices/safer choices.  Lots of great info on the internet that people can access and integrate into your life almost immediately.  If you are waiting for .Gov to save you from your own stupidity, then you deserve your fate.

Yep.  The major driver of human evolution is where you get your information.

new?

I live dead center Vancouver DT and for over a year you hear nightly fire trucks or ambulances going to ODs. usually a few every night rushing down the bus thruways to get over to Hastings

there are so many ODs for over the last year, fire chief said we can't properly respond to actual fires -- all the fire trucks are already too busy being first responders to ODs

not sure what it is now but during the summer Van was on pace for something like 15 reported ODs and 4 OD deaths per night. per night.

Chicago only has about 2 homicides per night. and, what, 2.1 million more more people.

per capita, fentanyl kills over 10x more people in VAN than homicides do in CHIRAQ #justsaying

sixsigma cygnusatratus's picture

Reverse opium war.  Perhaps China can negotiate a 99 year lease on Vancouver for a good price.

Laowei Gweilo's picture

most of the blame is really on local chemists and pushers. the product comes from China, but make no mistake, it's locals who are killing locals.

and ironic to that, it mostly only affects the homeless. it's not nearly as broadly reaching as the opioid crisis in the US.

which is why it's so easy for such a self-righteous city of socialists to ignore it.

Fish Gone Bad's picture

A way to rid the city of homeless... I was thinking Hep A will go north and wipe out anyone sharing a blanket.  Maybe the effect will be only be addi(c)tive.

Killdo's picture

the homeless I see in San Francisco are injecting something ( I guess heroin)? Most are injecting in broadday light close to Opera and City Hall. They tend to inject into their legs/ankles. It's pretty scary. All of the ones I saw are white (but dirt-poor). One day I counted 12 of them injecting as I walked for about 20 minutes from the top of russian Hill towards Market St

old naughty's picture

ha, "99 year lease" is funny,

so that would stop the OD killing?

Similarly, another article on China allowing foreign investment banks to own dometic banks up to 51% (for now),

so, that would help ease the NPLs ?

Cool, a front row seat to watch evolution at work.

DownWithYogaPants's picture

I have to agree.

Paging David Attenbourough.   We have a nature special for you to narrate.

Toxicosis's picture

This isn't evolution, it's genocide.  There is no passing of genes on here.  If anything most of the population is hooked on something, either legal or illegal.  They start them young and keep pumping it in to people.

The Ram's picture

It is most definitely evolution if people are taken out of the gene pool before they procreate!  If you cannot procreate, then your genetic heritage is not passed on.  Also, if you do procreate before you kill yourself, your offspring will be born with behaviorial proclivities that will not favor their survival.  We do know that addictions run in families.  No surprise there.

Laowei Gweilo's picture

more literal of a front row seat than you may have presumed... sadly I've seen at least one OD where she appeared to have passed away. it's never cool to see a young lady dead on the street because she got tricked into taking poison.

my family member works in a hospital near ground zero for this. the shit they see is really haunting: there's a maliciousness of fentanyl exploitation that's a different kind of cruel..... sure, sure, survival of the fittest or natural selection, and all that -- but these are people -- the most vunerable and abandoned and hopeless of people -- dying because they were maliciously tricked for profit. a lot of people are dying because of a posion they had no idea they were taking.

it's not just death or wrongful death. it's constructive manslaughter. for profit. profit off of literally killing people who sleep in their own shit in street alleys.

and it happens every. single. day. even by the standards of drug abuse, it's especially targeted and exploiteive, literally giving the most desperate and vunerable drug addicits daily Russian roullete hit of their drug.

these are not addiction deaths. they're not sustance use or abuse deaths. these are not like ODing on cocaine because you're parytying, or because you got addicted to anti-depresseants. it's not because of the drugs they are abusing or addicted to. those are choices. you made choices where you got addicted to that drug or chose to take that drug...

... no one chooses to take fentanyl.

and it's tragic... and I say that not easily because I'm not a sympathetic person to homelessness or drub abusers. but what fentanyl is doing to people here, and only the very most hopeless and vunerable without recourse in a city like van where they truly have zero hope to fix their lives, really is situation of those with capacity profiting off the deaths of the most vunerable. I'm not saying government should use any extra dollar or cent of my tax dollars to stop it. I rarely feel sympathy for drug abuse. i've not problem with survival of the fittest, making money of stupid sheeple, capitalism, etc.

But this is a pretty heartless tragic and malicious crisis where people are not just dying, they're being killed, and you gotta be a real special breed of cruelty and greed to profit off of selling murderous poison to homeless people.

newdoobie's picture

I don't think pushers are purposely killing their customers. That's not how business works.

The_Dude's picture

Special breed of cruelty and greed....that would be Chinese by definition.

You think the people that added melamine to kids milk have any qualms about selling deadly toxins to drug addicts.
