Military Coup Reportedly Under Way In Zimbabwe

Tyler Durden's picture

Zimbabwe is on edge amid speculation that a military coup is in progress, with army tanks seen outside the capital a day after the army commander threatened to "step in" to calm political tensions over the president's firing of his vice president. The Associated Press said it saw three tanks with several soldiers in a convoy on a road heading toward an army barracks just outside the capital, Harare, while Reuters reported that four tanks were seen heading toward the capital.

According to Reuters, two other tanks were seen parked beside the main road from Harare to Chinhoyi, about 20km from the city. Eyewitnesses also saw military vehicles blocking major roads outside the city.

The alleged coup takes place one day after Zimbabwe's army chief demanded a "stop" to the purge in President Robert Mugabe's ruling Zanu-PF, following the sacking of vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa. Mnangagwa was well-supported by the Zimbabwean national forces. On Monday, Amry General Constantino Chiwenga told a media conference attended by at least 90 senior army officers at the army headquarters in Harare on Monday that: "The current purging which is clearly targeting members of the party with a liberation background must stop forthwith."

According to New, Chiwenga recently returned from a trip in China to find Mnangagwa fired from government and expelled from Zanu-PF. The report said that the army had been seen to be backing Mnangagwa to succeed Mugabe, 93, but the nonagenarian's wife Grace had emerged as a top contender. Mnangagwa was kicked out of both government and the ruling party last week following accusations that he was plotting to topple Mugabe from power.

This prompted the army chief to accuse Zimbabwe's ruling party of expelling senior officials who participated in the 1970s war against white-minority ruled Rhodesia, saying "counter revolutionaries" were plotting to destroy the party. This was the first time Zimbabwe's military directly criticised the infighting in Zanu-PF and marked a rift between Mugabe and an institution that has been a key pillar of his power.

"The current purging and cleansing process in Zanu-PF which so far is targeting mostly members associated with our liberation history is a serious cause for concern for us in the defense forces," said Chiwenga, at a press conference, reading from his statement.

He then warned those "behind the current treacherous shenanigans that when it comes to matters of protecting our revolution, the military will not hesitate to step in. The current purging of which is clearly targeting members of the party with a liberation background must stop forthwith."

It appears that one day later, Chiwengae has made good on his threat, with tanks deployed around the capital. Local media also reported that heavily armed military personnel had sealed off state TV broadcaster ZBC.

As AP adds, while it is routine for tanks to move along that route, Tuesday's timing heightens unease in this country that for the first time is seeing an open rift between the military and 93 -year-old President Robert Mugabe.

Meanwhile, reports on the ground from Zimbabwe suggest that a coup may indeed be taking place. A flurry of photos – shared by journalists across Twitter – show a fleet of the armoured vehicles making their way to the country’s capital.  The convoy has taken to the streets just a day after the head of the armed forces said he was prepared to “step in” to end a purge of supporters of ousted vice-president Emmerson Mnangagwa.

A journalist in Harare has told News24 that "it seems the army is angry". He says the situation is a bit "tense" in the capital.

Some on Twitter are saying that although a coup is almost never a good thing, it brings an end to Mugabe's much despised regime.

Meanwhile, in a sign that events may turn violent, earlier on Tuesday, The Zimbabwean reported that Zimbabwe’s Zanu-PF youths said they were “prepared to die” in defence of President Mugabe’s government. In a statement on Tuesday, Zanu-PF’s secretary of the youth league Kudzai Chipanga said that Zanu-PF youths did not take lightly the military’s threats.

“We as Zanu-PF youth league are a lion which has awakened and found its voice, therefore we will not sit idly and fold our hands whilst cheap potshots and threats are made against Mugabe,” Chipanga said.

Here is Al Jazeera with a brief explainer of the political crisis in Zimbabwe that threatens to sweep Robert Mugabe from his post:

Zimbabwe is facing a political crisis with the ruling Zanu-PF party, as a very public showdown over who is likely to succeed President Robert Mugabe plays out. The current standoff is between the Youth faction, loyal to his wife, Grace Mugabe, and the former liberation fighters, loyal to Emmerson Mnangagwa, the vice president who was fired last week. Al Jazeera's Hannah Hoexter explains.

We have all heard of Rothschild and Rockfeller, but ontop of them sits David Sassoon, master of asian opium.

He was thrown out of Baghdad in 1812 and everything in the Middle East is about him regaining control.

About fucking time.

New leader should invite the whites back and give them full political control. New Rhodesia.

Zimbabwe is a big, fat mess.

A Caucasian would have to have an IQ lower than is Zimbabwe Niger to move there.

Perhaps you missed the fact that Mugabe has actually invited white farmers back to Zimbabwe because they are starving after he is taken Farms away from the whites and giving it to the blacks. I don't give a shit. Let them starve

Bemused Observer's picture

Damn that Mugabe, he is nothing but a tool. He chose to play to the revolutionary racist crowd, probably because they cheered louder, and decided to play hardball with the white farmers. Because that's what the racists wanted. Stupid, stupid man!

Here's a little secret about those white farmers. They aren't stupid. And they can see which way the prevailing winds were blowing. They KNEW that they were going to have to share power with the blacks, it was inevitable. And they would have adjusted, many were already making changes in anticipation of the new direction they were headed in. They could have easily been included in this New Zimbabwe, and mentored scores of interested blacks to teach them the farming techniques they'd need if they were going to run these farms. As long as they had some level of security, they would have cooperated with the new black leadership. Over time, the newly-trained black farmers could have gained control over the majority of the buying them from their white owners in the proper manner, and eventually you'd have black majority rule WITHOUT having to dispossess anyone of anything, and farms in the hands of people who know what to do with them.

But Mugabe chose to make them all enemies instead, to steal their farms and give them to inept cronies who trashed them. Now they go hungry, and have to scrounge food from all the countries they used to EXPORT food to.

Is it really more important to go on the record as being anti-white than it is to work towards the success of your country?

....see what happens when a white, female SNOWFLAKE appears on the scene in Zimbabwe?

We should go back? And lose everything we built up again a few years down the track?

No thanks. They're taking down South Africa it'll be another Zimbabwe. So there is no other "functioning" neighbouring nation to flee to and in case you hadn't noticed western nations have an open border policy only for non-Christian whites. A destitute white from Africa can go no where.

The farm attacks are militia operations... that says all one needs to know about (((who))) is in control.

How 'bout the White guy that fixes the tanks when they run out of oil because Blacks don't understand the concept of lubrication of moving parts?

Captain Nemo de Erehwon's picture

You mean like Tony Blair, Tony Podesta, Bill Clinton, George Bush ... etc? The only reason they could not make things worse for their countries was because (1) they got into a much better situation to start with (2) the people they were "leading" do not start jumping up and down and rush out to kill their neighbours, at least inside their country ...outside of it is a different matter.

In the end people get the leader they deserve ...

Bemused Observer's picture

The best thing would be a strong, charismatic black leader (male, of course, as that is what Africa will respect-sorry ladies, you have to work with what you've got.) and a smart, capable white guy with connections who has his ear and willingly remains in the background, letting the black guy be the 'face' of the admin. They'd have to be the very best of friends, so as not to be easily divided by the ones on both sides determined to retain the chaos.

The reality of the situation is that Africa will NEVER attain the glory it could have in a different sort of world, what it needs to do now is reach for a different kind of glory, which means giving up many of its traditional, tribal ways and striking off into a direction they weren't necessarily planning on. Historical circumstances have made this adjustment necessary. And blacks alone will not be able to accomplish this...they NEED the white help right now in order to make the transition. But right now, there are many whites among the chaos-sowers, and the blacks know it, so TRUST is a huge problem when it comes to accepting white help, especially among the masses. That's why any white faces need to be kept hidden, out of the public eye as much as possible so as to avoid being used as a blame-target for the ones who just want to tear it all down and burn it.

So, to wrap it up, all that is needed for Africa to thrive is a strong, capable black guy who is humble enough to allow his white 'Yoda' the power to lead through him, and a smart, resourceful white guy who is humble enough to BE that Yoda and let his black friend take the whole spotlight...that is it, folks. So, in three words, Africa is fucked.

Coup on Zimbabwe>?!?1  GAAAAAADDALSKDFAHF~

Old men on the way out?  Sounds like they are going to replace a 93 year old with a 75 year old.  Hardly a breath of fresh air.  Besdes, they are pushing the "liberation" credentials of their faction.  The same faction which is opposed to free markets and democracy.  Sounds like Zimbabwe is gearing up for another 20 years of non-democratic exploitation.

Adullam's picture

You caught that in the story too? This doesn't look so much like a coup for change but to insist on the status quo idealogy that got them into the mess they are in.

Another African nation descends into chaos and civil war. It's like a slow burn back to a more simple hunter gatherer existence with lots of death and destruction on the way down. Some cultures are just not compatible with civilization and the rule of law.

Bemused Observer's picture

Had African nations been free to develop without the constant interference by others who wanted those resources, they would have developed a civilization and culture just like anyone else. But it would have been an AFRICAN culture, very different from the Western European model we are accustomed to.

Unfortunately for the rest of the world, Western European culture does not permit the existence of other cultures, except as zoo-displays or artistic expressions, and won't permit another dominant culture to develop in the world it controls.

Africa is chaotic and disorganized not because of a lack of 'civilizableness' of its people, but because the current set of rulers WANTS it that way. As long as that continent remains dark and feral, those resources are up for grabs. And they are being mentally divvied up as we speak, in capitals all over the world. The only leaders the West will tolerate are the Mugabe-types, who ensure that their populations remain divided and at each other's throats. The white man is kept around for those times the 'natives' run out of stuff to fight amongst themselves over, and a new common enemy is needed.

Also, keep in mind that the fastest growing demographic in Africa is young, single men. Again, because the West wants it that way. Why? Because what do you get when you put together young men, lots of cash, things that explode, and a country with NO effective law enforcement mechanism?

What you get is the Africa TPTB want, the African Ideal, if you will. You don't have to look too far to see where the Western PTB have started to 'weaponize' these groups either...just look at Europe, with its multitudes of young, mostly single male, 'refugees', being given cash and coddling and told to "Come to Europe!"

'... they would have developed a civilization and culture just like anyone else'

Give an example of a black African 'civilization' of the last 750 years.

Bemused Observer's picture

There isn't, and that was my point. Our Western culture has dominated throughout that time, and has throughout the entire modern age...Africa never HAD an opportunity to develop away from that strong influence. It HAS had it's moments, and you can read about the great West African empires in history, but those attempts were quickly aborted as the dominant culture began to consolidate its power, that culture that leads to what we have today. Western culture was, for whatever reasons, set on the path to dominance very early on, and much of what we take for granted today stems directly from those early days.

Africa never had a chance, took the knockout blow before it ever got up on its feet. Doesn't mean it is incapable, just that conditions were not favorable for it, and so its potential could never be realized.

Its like having two world is a runner, and the other is a swimmer. Both are by far the fastest in their class. Who would win in a race?

Well, it all depends on where that race is being held, doesn't it? In a foot race, the first guy will take the gold. But what if the race is across the English Channel?

UselessEater's picture

Look at this map and timeline of Bantu migration (aka invasion and colonization).... they were free of whites and created what?

Genocide of indigenous natives.

ebear's picture

"Western culture was, for whatever reasons, set on the path to dominance very early on, and much of what we take for granted today stems directly from those early days."

Cows and horses.  You need both, the first for settling the land, the second for defense.  Of course the land has to be arable with a dependable source of water, but that alone won't get you there, as witness the ancient hydraulic civilizations that disappeared when water became scarce or too abundant and flooded them out.

Horses are not only a key to defense, but allow for expansion and conquest (Mongols).  The other key ingredient is mobility over water.  Coastal people that developed boats, first for fishing, then for trade and exploration, fared better than inland people with no maritime culture.  The reason for this is that navigation out of sight of land requires a knowledge of mathematics and the abiility to measure time accurately.  All manner of advancements follow from this need, that are then applied on land as well as at sea.

Finally, you have to consider language as an element of advancement in civilization.  This is a huge topic for which I recommend Marshal McLuhan's "Gutenberg Galaxy."  Basically, widespread literacy is the key, and for that you need a universal script that can be learned by most people, not just the domain of an intellectual elite, as in Egypt or China.  We take for granted the existence of a mere 26 letters representing seperate vowels and consonants, but try learning to write Chinese or Hindi and right away you'll see the advantage.  Material conditions being equal, language in its written form is by far the most important variable.  The easier it is to learn, the more widespread its influence, the greater the rate of cultural advancement.

Incidentaly, I've been studying Russian, and when you first look at it in writing, it seems complicated, but it's really not that difficult.  It's an alphabet just like ours, and once you learn the rules of pronunciation, you can speak it before you even know what it means.  Again, try that with Chinese or Hindi.

Bemused Observer's picture

I was thinking about the animal domestication thing, and yes, I can see how domesticating certain animals would have given a people a major advantage. The horse, for instance, is useful on the farm, but can also be easily outfitted for conquest.

Perhaps it was a combination of the luck of having the horse combined with a natural aggressiveness of the people themselves that ultimately led to the expansion of the tribes that would go on to form Western civilization. A lot of ancient peoples in the region had horses, but it was the Mongols that raised it to a new level, using them primarily for warfare instead of farming.

The American Indian is always thought of as a horseback kind of guy, yet there WERE no horses in the New World until the Spanish brought them over. It was actually a return, as the horse WAS a New World resident until it went extinct during the Mega-fauna die-off. But boy did THEY take to each other fast! In no time, the Indian OWNED the horse, and owned the praire until finally overtaken by the Europeans.

But they didn't think to use this animal for farm work, or other domestic chores, they used it for raiding, forming war parties and expanding territory...highly aggressive uses. Just like those Mongols. By that time, those Indians had seen plenty of examples of the 'farm use' of the animal, as most colonists horses were farm workhorses, so they knew of this use. Yet they chose not to, interesting.

Perhaps certain peoples are just more prone to becoming aggressive, and when a new invention or discovery is made, they are just more likely to use it for war and conquest. History sometimes brings the two together at the right time, and a people are suddenly given an insurmountable advantage over all others. Before, they had the will, but now they have the way.
