Aircraft Carrier CVN-77 Parks Next Door To Syria Just As US Urges Americans To Leave Country "Immediately"
Yesterday we reported that the Arab League (with European and US support) are preparing to institute a no fly zone over Syria. Today, we get an escalation which confirms we may be on the edge. Just out from CBS: "The U.S. Embassy in Damascus urged its citizens in Syria to depart "immediately," and Turkey's foreign ministry urged Turkish pilgrims to opt for flights to return home from Saudi Arabia to avoid traveling through Syria." But probably the most damning evidence that the "western world" is about to do the unthinkable and invade Syria, and in the process force Iran to retaliate, is the weekly naval update from Stratfor, which always has some very interesting if always controversial view on geopolitics, where we find that for the first time in many months, CVN 77 George H.W. Bush has left its traditional theater of operations just off the Straits of Hormuz, a critical choke point, where it traditionally accompanies the Stennis, and has parked... right next to Syria.

"The U.S. Embassy continues to urge U.S. citizens in Syria to depart immediately while commercial transportation is available," said a statement issued to the American community in Syria Wednesday and posted on the Embassy's website. "The number of airlines serving Syria has decreased significantly since the summer, while many of those airlines remaining have reduced their number of flights."
The warning followed an announcement in Washington this week that Ambassador Robert Ford would not return to Syria this month as planned, indicating concerns over his safety.
The Obama administration quietly pulled Ford out of Syria last month, citing credible personal threats against him.
The Turkish foreign ministry on Wednesday urged Turkish pilgrims to opt for flights to return home from Saudi Arabia and avoid traveling through Syria for security reasons.
The warning came two days after Syrian soldiers opened fire on at least two buses carrying Turkish citizens, witnesses and officials said, apparent retaliation for Turkey's criticism of Assad. The Turks were returning from Saudi Arabia after performing the annual Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia.

The US helped immensely at the beginning by launching Tomahawk missles then flew airbone sorties from the 19th March and exited Libya on the 3rd of April handing over command to NATO led by Canada - the US was to remain strictly as a support / intelligence role afterwards but I see from below post that wasn't strictly the case. 26 nations had aircraft in the sky over Libya during that time with the US comprising of half ot total 300 aircraft deployed. Canadian F18's actually flew the majority of missions over Libya as default leaders. Bombing of ground targets continued without interuption till mid October 6 months after the US's exit.
My argument was that NATO can / could enforce it's own no fly zone.

Air Force and Navy aircraft are still flying hundreds of strike missions over Libya despite the Obama administration’s claim that American forces are playing only a limited support role in the NATO operation.
An Africa Command (AFRICOM) spokeswoman confirmed Wednesday that since NATO’s Operation Unified Protector (OUP) took over from the American-led Operation Odyssey Dawn on March 31, the U.S. military has flown hundreds of strike sorties. Previously, Washington had claimed that it was mostly providing intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) and tanker support to NATO forces operating over Libya.
“U.S. aircraft continue to fly support [ISR and refueling] missions, as well as strike sorties under NATO tasking,” AFRICOM spokeswoman Nicole Dalrymple said in an emailed statement. “As of today, and since 31 March, the U.S. has flown a total of 3,475 sorties in support of OUP. Of those, 801 were strike sorties, 132 of which actually dropped ordnance.”

Obama initially stated we need to establish just a no fly zone so tens of thousands of people don't get killed.
What happened? Much more than keeping Libyan planes out of the sky as they (NATO which = US) bomb many "targets" that had nothing to do with a no fly zone enforcement.
AND, bonus, tens of thousands of people were killed any way (despite that being the specific rationale for us bombing Libya).

Iran is not buying enough Chinese or Russian or American products to matter to employment in these countries so why not get all the Iranian resources onto the international market for all the big consumer/producer creditor/debtor nations. Given our track record for playing world police, I don't think my bets would be good in America as far as "last man standing." If "the world comes crashing down" as you say, it's probably due to countries lobbing nukes at one another. Did you have another "crashing down" in mind? In all seriousness, how old are you? I ask that, and not to make generalizations, but I generally hear that argument from older Americans who use America's past as the logic for your argument. Being younger I tend to use the present situation and how it will play into the future of America. Given our sovereign debt crisis amongst other things, when I judge the future of this nation, we are not the Top Dog. I'd be interested in hearing a logical argument for how given our current situation, America will still be the Top Dog, 10, 20, 30 years from now. Our manufacturing base is diminished, our school systems are failures, our military is overextended, the socioeconomic gaps are widening, our corporations and politicians are continuously involved in corruption and on and on. And I haven't even started to touch the financial and economic issues within the country.
