America: A Government Out Of Control

Tyler Durden's picture

"A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have"

Thomas Jefferson

Something odd and not quite as planned happened as America grew from its "City on a Hill" origins, on its way to becoming the world's superpower: government grew. A lot. In fact, the government, which by definition does not create any wealth but merely reallocates it based on the whims of a select few, has transformed from a virtually invisible bystander in the economy, to the largest single employer, and a spending behemoth whose annual cash needs alone are nearly $4 trillion a year, and where tax revenues no longer cover even half the outflows. One can debate why this happened until one is blue in the face: the allures of encroaching central planning, the law of large numbers, and the corollary of corruption, inefficiency and greed, cheap credit, the transition to a welfare nanny state as America's population grew older, sicker and lazier, you name it. The reality is that the reasons for government's growth do not matter as much as realizing where we are, and deciding what has to be done: will America's central planners be afforded ever more power to decide the fates of not only America's population, but that of the world, or will the people reclaim the ideals that the founders of this once great country had when they set off on an experiment, which is now failing with every passing year?

As the following video created by New America Now, using content by Brandon Smith whose work has been featured extensively on the pages of Zero Hedge, notes, "we tend to view government as an inevitability of life, but the fact is government is not a force of nature. It is an imperfect creation of man and it can be dismantled by man just as easily as it can be established." Unfortunately, the realization that absolute power corrupts absolutely, and absolute central planning leads to epic catastrophes without fail, seems a long way away: most seem content with their lot in life, with lies that their welfare money is safe, even as the future is plundered with greater fury and aggression every passing year, until one day the ability to transfer wealth (benefiting primarily the uber rich, to the detriment of the middle class which is pillaged on an hourly basis), from the future to the present is gone, manifesting in either a failed bond auction or hyperinflation. The timing or shape of the transition itself is irrelevant, what is certain is that America is now on collision course with certain collapse unless something changes. And one of the things that has to change for hope in the great American dream to be restored, is the role, composition and motivations of government, all of which have mutated to far beyond what anyone envisioned back in 1776. Because America is now saddled with a Government Out Of Control.

Watch the two clips below to understand just how and why we have gotten to where we are. Also watch it to, as rhetorically asked by the narrator, prompt us to question whether the government we now have is still useful to us and what kind of powers it should be allowed to wield.

George Washington, in letter to
J. Bowen, Rhode Island,
Jan. 9, 1787
"Paper money has had the effect in your state that it will ever have, to ruin commerce, oppress the honest, and open the door to every species of fraud and injustice."

Thomas Jefferson to
John Taylor, 1816
“I sincerely believe ... that banking establishments are more dangerous than standing armies, and that the principle of spending money to be paid by posterity under the name of funding is but swindling futurity on a large scale.”

Daniel Webster,
speech in the Senate, 1833
“We are in danger of being overwhelmed with irredeemable paper, mere paper, representing not gold nor silver; no sir, representing nothing but broken promises, bad faith, bankrupt corporations, cheated creditors and a ruined people.”

The Declaration of Independence 1776: All men are created equal and there are certain unalienable rights that governments should never violate. These rights include the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. When a government fails to protect those rights, it is not only the right, but also the duty of the people to overthrow that government. In its place, the people should establish a government that is designed to protect those rights.

Oh, what did those guys know...they're just a bunch of dead white guys.

Today we have Pelosi, and Frank, and Romney, and Obama,...Clinton, Bush, Clinton, Bush, Santorum, Boxer, et al.... to speak for the people.  Doesn't that make you feel...

"God gave me my money. I believe the power to make money is a gift from God ... to be developed and used to the best of our ability for the good of mankind. Having been endowed with the gift I possess, I believe it is my duty to make money and still more money and to use the money I make for the good of my fellow man according to the dictates of my conscience."

John D. Rockefeller, interview in 1905. - Peter Collier and David Horowitz, The Rockefellers, an American Dynasty, chapter 3, p.48 (1976)

As an annotation to the quote, it also says: "Rockefeller assumed giving to charity was a Christian duty, and did so throughout his life. Later in life he began to "have the semimystical feeling that he had been especially selected as the frail vessel for the great fortune.""

Seems to be a common ailment among the uber-wealthy.

Well, for one thing, I don't think China would have allowed an influx of American goods into their market to put their people out of work.  And I don't  think China would have financed the build-up of a dangerous competitor, both economically and militarily.

And other than those 2 teeny-weeny things, the answer to your question is: not much....

TPTB know the average US soldier will not shoot on unarmed citizens, have to assume the plan is to employ Blackwater, XE whatever the name is today as enforcers since they could careless and would enjoy murder.  The purchase of 450 million hollow tip bullets by DHS is certainly a precursor along with NDAA, Fema Camps, no free speech zones, national resource (confiscation) and who knows what is next.

The sickest part is the votes for these bills, the only thing these idiots (dems, repubs) can agree on is a police state.

Good video, thanks for putting it together and posting it

These are common use ammo for nearly ALL LE depts in the USA, and remember they are just handgun rounds.

This is far more worrisome than them having pea shooter rounds...............

Bill HR 347..............check it out, and figure out WTF we need these for.

They are going screw around until an internal war is started.Who knows, maybe that's what they want.............

IF they think they are preparing to stop one, they have really missed the mark.

rwe2late's picture

TPTB know the average US soldier will not shoot on unarmed citizens

I would be less sure about what soldiers and police won't do. In times of war they have incinerated/destroyed whole cities of "enemy" civilians. As for  beating and shooting protestors, well ...

Soldiers and police would primarily be tasked with rounding up "suspected" dissidents and activists, and they already do that. Division of labor removes responsibility at each step of the process. 1) round them up, resistors must be traitors 2) "courts" find the detainees "guilty" or at least suspected of becoming guilty based on classified information 3) turn those "guilty" over to the tender mercies of prison guards at Gitmo and elsewhere.

Sadly, the .001% has armed and convinced a sizable percentage of the lower and middle classes to protect that .001%. They have also convinced a sizable percentage to maintain surveillance of everybody else.

Cathartes Aura's picture

I'm with you rwe2late - the "average US soldier" has shown that following orders is rather high up on their list, and they certainly fire on unarmed citizens in other nationstates - all those who give the orders need do is "re-brand" the target with any number of fancy descriptives - terrorist, activist, whatever - and order will be carried out.

c'mon people, even HERE behind computer screens, there are plenty of people willing to "kill" their fellow citizens, getting "permission" and a weapon will be chaotic, to say the least.

then, of course, there's that reciprocal arrangement with Canada to trade troops in case of civil unrest. . .

Gunga's picture

I think the logic can be extended even further. The typical US soldier will assist the unarmed citizen. Blackwater, Xie, whatever TSA fuckstick will be swept away like a cork in the tide. The tremendous mass that is the American people is overcoming the  inertia that has kept it still for a long time. Once the tremendous mass gets moving it will be unstoppable.

If the ballon goes up just who the hell is dumb enough to be unarmed?  In essence as long as I look like a sheep and baaa like a sheep I am okay?  I am pretty sure I can noodle a better plan, thanks though.  There is not enough XE to secure two major cities.  The people must be cowed first it is the non-negotiable factor.

The grand delusion that is government and in America that the Founding Fathers created a government devoted to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness continues to exist and remain the only option for civilized society- that is how well we have been programmed.

One, government is minority rule of the majority for the benefit of the minority. There have never been exceptions to this rule.

Two, banking is a criminal operation that adds neither value nor production of goods to an economy. They exist for the operation of transfering the wealth of the majority to the minority- mostly, the bankers. This is enabled by the institution of government and of course, the control of the currency, ala the FED.

Three, the founding fathers were merchantilists that believed in a superior class to rule the masses. They just wanted to be the ruling class versus the ruling class of England. When power bequethed under the Articles of Confederation proved inadequate, they created the Constitution to guarantee that power, especially through taxation. The original Republic is structured to minimize democracy and protect the wealthy class from their excesses. Whether you look at the Executive, Senate or Judicial branch. The Bill of Rights was supposed to balance these powers, but have, over time, been eviscerated.

Four, the foundation of civilzation is private property and contracts. These two legal entities and the wisdom of the society are sufficient for all the needs of a society.

Ok that was good. Now what? They may kill us with boredom if we have to wait for Portugal, Italy and Spain to be bailed out before they set off the first false flag.

The best shot was the absolute tyranny bottle. They looked so good all locked up together in there.

I would like to see a video of how to apply all the new draconian laws to financial terrorists and treasonous politicians. Because when the change in power does come all those horrible laws can first be used to round up the scum that authored, voted for and signed them into law.

Financial terrorism is terrorism.

I'm ready to start passing literature out at the local chamber of commerce about Agenda 21.

Resources when and if left to their own natural path will diffuse and move toward non income producing activity.

Managing for results requires that a concentrated focus be intent on placing resources only on income producing resources.

90% of the results come from the first 10% of the resources, the remaining 10% of results typically use of the remaining resources in the form of efforts or costs as a by product of the initial endevour.

What needs to be done?

Complete removal of wasteless efforts, and a complete realignment toward income producing activity.

In fact, anything that is working well...that is where all focus and effort should be placed upon at once.

We must focus on designing the garments of the future and refuse to patch the garment of yesterday.

Live in the now and build toward the future.

Happy Easter ZH

JW - in humble opinion, the financial mess we all watch here at ZH thanks to the brilliant work of the Tylers is just a sideshow to the bigger issues playing out.  I would sum it up by calling it a cheap energy, industrial age polulation explosion that is coming to an end.

That MIT paper from 1972 that has been getting some buzz lately (Limits to Growth) ought to get some more attention.

Anyhow, human behavior (mostly selfish and shortsighted) is not going to do the right things to avoid a calamity - not individually and certainly not in groups or as nations.  That is a given.  So, we are doomed to have change forced upon us.  The big questions are about how it all goes down... timing, etc.  Viewed from this perspective, I think the world looks quite different than when viewed from just financial terms.  The big boys know what is at stake and I will bet are playing a longer term game aimed at managing the coming paradigm shift in human history.  Staying on top though it all is the goal of course.  Same as it ever was.

JW n FL's picture

You will like this then!

I agree that Cheap Energy is why the World is being wound down..

the problem is.. America is Winding Down.. Europe is Winding Down.. China is Winding Down..

Everyone is down shifting..

there is more PAPER (FIAT) floating around the World now than EVER! before.. so why is the World stalling?

Maybe the Saudi Reserves that have not budged in the past 50 years are not quite up to snuff! LOL!

I would add to your Cheap Fuel Pitch that.. Population Control.. comes into play.. 1 American equals the amount of energy 5 3rd World personalities.

and on the MIT note.. MIT just released the dooms day count down.. white paper. 2030!

Twenty to Thirty Questions About MIT 2030

Caroline A. Jones*

offered to the MIT community by the SAPiens (an assemblage of architects, planners, and historians in SA+P – the School of Architecture and Planning)

MIT 2030 represents a bold beginning for a comprehensive plan that anticipates the renovation of MIT’s aging facilities and produces a map of its future research priorities and expansion needs. As emphasized by its original authors, MIT 2030 “is a process, not a plan.” A plan is now needed, one focused on the core educational priorities of the Institute rather than driven by real-estate development paradigms. We advocate that the administration take full advantage of the professional and research expertise of its faculty, and open the MIT 2030 process to its community for wide-ranging input and needed modification. We know that this more transparent, collaborative, and open engagement works: such a process contributed to a smooth financial response to the world-wide economic crisis, and that kind of engagement will help convert the MIT 2030 “process” to a visionary plan.

The following questions purposefully do not add up to a single opinion, but weave together suggestions and concerns based on our research in design and planning. We urge consideration of community and housing issues, quality of life, and integration with regional plans that are not evident in the current MIT 2030 [] and Kendall Square Initiative [] Websites. We also advocate for an open and transparent process in formulating a viable plan for MIT’s future.

I typed this especially for you. Hope it helps see the things I've gone threw.

Back when I was a young pup, formulating new plastic flame retardant recipes was my gig. Typically, you take a 3:1 ratio of antimony oxide [Sb2O4] and decabromodiphenyl oxide [DBDPO] to hit a UL/CSA standard. Often times, you could alter ratio depending on suppliers concentration levels. So the products go mainstream and everyone is making money until..

Some criminal declares antimony oxide price goes from $1.25/pound to $3.20/pound. All of my product costing models get thrown out the window. We knew the acting cartel thief group. What do we accomplish? We watch this thief group commit suicide and lose the Sb2O4 demand requirements.  How you ask? We designed products to meet UL/CSA classification by using Magnesium hydroxide [Mg(OH)] and eliminating the need for Sb2O4. When the thief restored his market prices, our old product lines went back on line and we were grateful to have the other Mg(OH) revenue stream creating income.

This is how you bitch slap common criminals.  I left this industry, because it was not going to make me get up every day till my retirement. The lab environment was just not for me. :)

NAPOLEON - Disaster in Russia

My military veteran neighbor came to speak with me yesterday. We haven’t spoken in two years, always just a friendly wave acknowledgement.

Neighbor: I want to plant some trees near your property line. Is that OK?

Me: No problem

Neighbor:  I took your advice, and have 6 months left to pay off my mortgage. I wanted to thank you for helping me understand that two years ago.

Me: Glad I could of helped you.

Me: Interestingly, I’m closing on a house in Marco Island next month.

Neighbor: What are you going to do with this house, sell it or rent it? What are you going to do with the rest of your properties?

Me: I haven’t decided what to do with the house next to you.

Neighbor: Marco Island is beautiful, what made you decide that location?

Me: My better half pushed me into the location. We have been fighting over this for two years. In today’s world, if/when things go bad, I won’t have to worry about safety. One road comes in & out of Marco Island. If that life line is broken, we’ll be in the Gulf of Mexico in under 5 minutes. All credit goes to my queen bee.

Neighbor: That email you gave me two years ago never worked, can I get it again?

Me: Sure, let me get that to you another time. Great talking with you.

Neighbor: Bye Atomizer
