America Under Attack: Pictures Of Assault On US Consulate In Libya
It has been a long time since US territory abroad, i.e., a US embassy, was openly attacked. It has been even longer, or about 33 years, since a US ambassador was last killed in the line of duty in 1979 Afghanistan. Both happened last night. Below, courtesy of Reuters, are pictures of the event.

It's not obvious that the whole "Western" approach to government is superior, if you take a look around at what we've got.
The separation of church and state concept came only after hundreds of years of religiously motivated domestic unrest in the British Empire. This separation was not constructed because people WANTED it--it was constructed for the same reason the Europeans eventually decided to stop killing each other. It was either continue with religious-motivated violence and collapse society to pre-literate levels or make a change and SURVIVE.
Despite the long-standing tension between the different Muslim factions, the people at large haven't had a modern opportunity to try to destroy each other without other outside interests interfering. So it's easy to understand why "religion" and "politics" are so closely intertwined in the Mid-East.
It would make a lot more sense to recognize the risks inherent in basing the entire US economy on oil from under "those people's" feet and start gradually shifting away from total dependence on that resource.
Yeah, we can dig and drill our own oil, but keeping that powder dry is a pretty good idea if you believe the US is still going to be around in 30 years. As long as anyone on the planet will exchange real commodities for our funny colored paper, it seems likely our business interests will continue to fleece those suckers.

My condolences to the families of the brave men that have died. Libya has oil, we will not be shaken out so easily. SpecOps soldiers are supposed to provide embassy security so I am surprised this type of thing happened. Was the security team told to stand down, or we they somewhere else? The report I read was that the ambassador was captured as his car was fleeing to a safer location? Seems like a strange decision to flee in a car, I think I would have parked myself in the ebassy next to the dudes with guns and rode it out Alamo style.

Marines provide embassy security. Problem is that they are under the command of the state department. In this case it looks like they were not allowed to present an effective response.
I think this is starting to sound like a serious failure of our DOS leadership, but maybe the policy decision is from POTUS. In any event, those brave Marine heroes that died needed more help, and it makes me sad that they didn't get it.

Make no mistake, Romney’s actions are really Sheldon Adelson’s actions. It’s impossible to identify Romney’s feelings in that he is an open vessel now pulling out all the stops to get pro-Israel media and pro-Israel money to get him into the spot he has wanted as a small boy.
On top of this, Politico has a story this morning showing Wall Street would prefer Romney but now feels that he will lose the election.
Israel has become the campaign issue; if Romney doesn’t back off, it’s going to really hurt him. Polls show the American people are very opposed to war with Iran. In order to win the election, Romney needs money, but you can’t win elections with money alone, you need voters.
And, if these pressures in the political campaign aren’t enough, here come the Chicago teachers already making more money that all teachers in the United States, on strike, and hoping to pressure the Administration into supporting them.
