And The Kickers In Reid's Proposed "Deficit Cutting" Plan Are...

Tyler Durden's picture

Following hot on the heels of the proposed Boehner rehashed plan, we get the first details of where the bulk of the $2.7 trillion in proposed savings will come from. Are you ready for this? REID PLAN SAID TO HAVE $1 TRLN SAVINGS FROM WINDING DOWN WARS. That's right. In some parallel galaxy far, far away, lack of expenditures, on America's 6 front wars to be sure, is now considered a "saving"? Front lobe hemorrhage to commence in 5 seconds. And the other migraine-inducing details of the Reiid plan are...

  • REID PLAN WOULD INCLUDE $30 BLN IN FANNIE, FREDDIE CHANGES
  • REID PLAN WOULD INCLUDE $400 BILLION IN INTEREST SAVINGS
  • REID PLAN SAID TO INCLUDE $1.2 TRLN DISCRETIONARY SPENDING CUTS
  • $10-$15 BILLION IN AGRICULTURE SAVINGS
  • and of course... THE CREATION OF A BIPARTISAN PANEL TO FIND FUTURE SAVINGS. I.E. WHY DO IT NOW, WHEN YOU CAN DO IT... NEVER

So $1.2 trillion in discretionary cuts, which means millions in government job losses. What was that about the unemployment rate again? And what the hell is an "interest savings" - is that the interest on the debt that would be incurred if the deficit cuts were not imposed? Or will Reid replace Brian Sack in the Fed's OMO desk and proceed to sell trillions in Long-term bond futures puts to get the 30 Year rate to -infinity?

Even the moronic rating agencies won't hesitate to downgrade the US to F- based on this deranged gobbledygook.

I personally plan on saving money by counting all of the miles I am not going to drive the rest of this summer. I'm up well over a million, and I've barely made it to August 2nd...Then there's all the money I'm going to save on strip clubs in Vegas...

Although, I'm a bit stuck on the next bit. Do I count as savings all the money I'd loose in Vegas if I don't win??? Or do I count as losses all the money I might win???? It's a real poser, that one is...

Why is this so difficult?

Lower the debt ceiling by 20%/year for the next 5 years.  If a proposed budget does not accommodate this target, the budgets will be cut 20% across the board.

Oh, and end the Fed.

I think you missed the point.

The decline in expenditures from drawdown of troops in the wars Is Already In The Budget Baseline.

They are double counting.  Claiming a cut from the baseline in which the drawdown already exists is entirely bogus.

I don't understand the tone of this article, suggesting that we should not cut pentagon funding. Did I misread something? It's been disgusting that the MSM continues to discuss various ways to solve our budget crisis, but the pentagon budget is never mentioned. Following Ron Paul's plan of bringing all of our troops home and closing up expensive unnecessary military bases overseas is a certainty when the country is insolvent. There isn't money to pay for it all. We'd be smart to pull the troops in now, on our own terms, rather than rush them home with tail between our legs as our checks are bouncing left and right. USSR ran out of money and folded, not too long ago. Before that I am sure there are plenty of examples. To suggest that we should continue to act as Israel's attack dog military wherever the false flags fly, is an insult.

Reid and Schumer.  Their stripes never change. They are what we thought they were. They will always be massive government, pro-tax liberals.  And counting of "cuts" from wars and "cuts" from the "rate of increase" in spending is ridiculous.

They have never been trustworthy. Check the balance of our national debt, which they supported spending at every turn. They would have been fired in any other business for their performance.  And they and Obama want more of the same policy's that got us here.

Expect more of the same tonight when El Presidente blathers on about why it won't work without putting "his plan" on paper.

The savings are always in the "out" years.  We need those savings now.

Re: 14th Amendment talk: it says the Debt of the United States shall not be repudiated.  Seems to me this is for outstanding debt and likely would include any new debt incurred as a result of spending authorized by Congress.

What this does not say is that spending without a budget is authorized; nor that the President can spend willy nilly and then hand the bill to Congress.

Conclusion:if the Prez took this action, the Prez cannot raise the debt ceiling other than to avoid repudiation of the debt - e.g., still won't stop other govt programs from running out of money.  No repudiation of debt in that case; we're paying the interest and principle.

Looking forward to another "scare the people" speech tonight.

What happened was that Reid came up with this quick obfuscation in order to make it look like it will happen but it won't.

Easy to fix debt problem. Just like the banks you create a Good Bank and Bad Bank.

Create a good USA and bad USA. Have all the debt loaded on Wisconsin or something and then break them from the Union and off we go! They develop their own currency, etc.

Also if you state is currently shutdown...you can't run for election.

Not sure this whole 2 party system thing is working anymore? Anyone?
