Anonymous Hacks Greek Ministry Website, Demands IMF Withdrawal, Threatens It Will Wipe Away All Citizen Debts
If there is one war that Greece could not afford to join, that is with the global computer hacking collective known as Anonymous. Yet as of minutes ago, that is precisley what happened, after Anonymous, as part of what it now calls Operation Greece, took down the Greek Ministry of Justice (http://www.ministryofjustice.gr/). While the pretext for the hacking appears to have been an arrest of the wrong people, is seems to have angered Anonymous to the point where they have left an extended message of demands on the Greek website, warning that unless the IMF withdraws from the country and the government resigns, all debts of Greek citizens will be wiped clean.

We are Anonymous.
We watch every day your government abolishes the constitution and institutions of the country.
We see them leading you closer and closer to poverty.
We see them pass laws that deprive you of any right to dignity.

I'm going to wait to applaud yet another self-appointed group who has decided they know what's best for everybody else. Seems everybody thinks himself a god and is anxious to demonstrate his parlor tricks. Such beliefs haven't exactly made the world a better place in the past. The corruption of power and all that. Oh yeah, Anonymous would be the first humans in history not to abuse whatever power they amass. Sorry, but I won't be fooled again.
Now if they transfer all the Greek debt to the emptied bank accounts of Tim Geithner, Jamie Dimon and Lloyd Blankfein, I may rise for a standing ovation or at least a good laugh. Until then, it's just another guy comparing dicks in the locker room expecting everyone to be impressed.
There is a corner of me that has these kinds of thoughts too. I hear you loud and clear. I just wonder if this isn't the way of it, that some folks have some huge egos, want to flex, and that is how the "oppressors" change. I know it sounds fucked up.
Some of the posts here talk about a very democratic seeming process, where they (the hackers) all have a voice and individuals make a choice on what they feel like doing. If enough make the choice, it happens. If not enough make the choice, it happens lamely. If none do it, it does not happen.
But yeah, I don't have their skill set. I am really easy to fuck over because of it (you know personally just how dippy I am with computers, I, for chriminey's sake, tell the truth when I don't need to and don't know better). They can use that (lack of skillz) against most of us (unless they are full of shit and only able to do DOS attacks). All of us would feel unsafe and at their mercy.

Words! Nothing but words! They may be able to bring down Homepages and some servers, but I doubt that they would be able to do any real damage to a bank. Just think about it: Banks have so many fail safes compared to a normal website. All their databases have to be redundant. Maybe they could do a DOS attack on some services but they wouldn't be able to touch any bank account or data related to Greek debt.
Why? Simple: If they could do as they say, they would prove it. It's as simple as that.What do we have? Nothing but smart words on a wall. How about some bank account numbers or anything that would prove the claims? Nothing.

The warning is so the Greek Govt. can hastily move back up data to more remote regions/locations that Anon' cannot reach. What will be most telling is what unfolds in the near term. Wouldn't it have been more effective to make at least a token effort? A sort of statement of intentions? It sends a clear message if you carry out some of your stated goals. When you simply make a threat, you've given opportunity to enhance countermeasures, etc. If you don't follow through, and the net result is making security tighter (and/or giving easy justification for new legislation), what's being gained? Youv'e potentially added obstacles, and made your goals more difficult to attain.
Oh, yes, brilliant strategy, threaten wide-scale action by doing a small action which could get you found-out BEFORE you're able to do the wide-scale action.
