From Arab Spring To Greek Autumn To European Winter

Tyler Durden's picture

Yesterday in Tunis:

Today in Greece - A man pours a flammable liquid on his body to set himself on fire outside a Piraeus bank branch in Thessaloniki in northern Greece September 16, 2011. The 55-year old man had entered the bank and asked for a renegotiation of his overdue loan payments on his home and business, according to police, which he could not pay, but was refused by the bank (Reuters).

Tomorrow in Europe:

Very strict guns laws over there as far as I know, that's why.

That and those small time bank employees he'd be able to shoot would've been pretty much innocent anyway - it's not like he'd be able to walk up to some CEOs or high ranking politicians. Hurting or killing some poor schmuck who just happens to work for some bank doesn't do any good - they're getting just as fucked as everyone else anyway.

1931 De?ja? vu?

The Sovereign Debt Crisis is getting far worse not better. Instead of looking at the problem we face, governments are in denial and think that if they can just get through this bailout, everything will just go away. The latest round of American financial assistance took place precisely on the target day of September 15th, 3.14 months from the June turning point on the Economic Confidence Model (ECM). Why these events take place right to the day I cannot explain. They just do. Nevertheless, The Fed agreed to swap unlimited dollars for euros to effectively support the faltering euro currency. In reality,

this is akin to the September 12th, 1927 Federal Reserve Board meeting in Washington where they usurped all the branches and cut the discount rate for all reserve banks to 3.5%. This 1927 intervention of Fed to lower US interest rates in hopes of deflecting the capital inflows from Europe has been widely criticized as fueling the US stock market bubble. While that point may be debatable, here again we have the Fed acting to save Europe and it did not stop the capital flight from Europe back then, and it is unlikely to win the day once again. Europe still collapsed in 1931 on the heels of the collapse of Creditanstalt in Austria on May 11th, 1931 a little more than 3 years after the 1927 intervention and just over 2 years from the September 3rd, 1929 high in the US stock market.

It does not matter how many times previous interventions have failed. Government will do the same thing every time hoping this time there will be a different result. The move will not help avert a wider crisis, for at the very best, we are only delaying the pain. The danger that is developing is we are now involving the wider global economy in trying to support a failed currency experiment. Instead of doing the right thing, no, we have to try rigging the game with no long-term exit strategy.

Once again, the Fed is flooding the financial system with cash, in hopes of bailing out Europe. Such dollar injections will do nothing to save Europe and it is fueling inflationary trends in the middle of an economic decline producing the worst of two worlds STAGFLATION. On top of this, the Fed policymakers will meet again next week to decide whether the stagnating U.S. economy needs another round of QE2 easy-money measures. Perhaps they will buy more long-term bonds from foreign holders that will have no direct local stimulus effect.

The US gets pulled into the bailout process for it is still the biggest contributor to the IMF under Bretton Woods. The American taxpayers will pay for yet another bailout of foreign nations. Instead of revising the monetary and debt system, we are being dragged further down the rabbit hole desperately trying to maintain a system of perpetual borrowing with no intent of every paying anything off. And the people in charge see no problem? Further illustrating just how out of control things are, everyone approved at the Group of 20 industrialized nations meeting in 2009, granting the IMF broad powers to expand its lending authority to help keep Humpty Dumpty together. That will push American taxpayers over the edge for Congress will turn more aggressive in their tax collections from citizens to keep the whole mess going, but to what end? The IMF loans will go bad and now they too will have a blank check.

In July, Secretary Tim Geithner argued that the IMF claims must be paid before all other creditors. I doubt that will be the case when it comes to a choice of defaulting on the bonds or the IMF. The IMF will take the hit to save the failed system. "The United States has never experienced a loss on its IMF commitments," Geithner has argued. We were not in a Sovereign Debt Crisis like this since 1945 when the IMF was founded. This is like saying someone will never die because they are alive now.

Beastie, The exit stratedgy is called war and it is taking place right before your very eyes. Your right about one thing, it is Deja vu (all over again) right here on Zero Hedge. I have been reading this site for over a year and letters are repeating the same stuff from a year ago. Forget about world banks,inflation/deflation,cds and defaults. Here is reality for you:The U.S. with all its' allies (Uk,France,Israel,Germeny,Etc.--i.e. the West) is calling the shots in todays world regardless of any level of debt. In today's world, Bush is right. "You are either on our side or you are the enemy." We are on our way to world conquest and when all is said and done the world capitol will be Washington DC.Be happy you live in the U.S.of A where you are safe from the misery to be felt by any country that wants to resist a takeover of their resources. The smart leaders are on the team and if Russia and China get smart, they will join up ASAP. There will be no other reserve currency allowed in this world. The Military power of the West(led by the US) is overwhelming and unmatched. The rest of the world knows it and that is why we spend the money we do on defense. The world has changed but most people don't know it yet. Anyone who thinks that the US with control of the reserve currency and the mightiest army on earth is headed for third world status is a damn fool. The fact is :THE WORLD IS OURS! THERE ARE JUST A FEW WHO HAVE'NT FIGURED IT OUT YET.

Reply to rivers,

Rivers, I disagree with your premise that the military power of the West is overwhelming and  unmatched.

To be clear, I believe the west is unmatched in technology and equipment, and we have unmatched resources (the ability to print) but I don’t think we have the will to win.

Best quote of colonel Kurtz from Apocalypse Now.

And then I realized they (VC/NVA) were stronger than we, because they could stand that these were not monsters, these were men... trained cadres. These men who fought with their hearts, who had families, who had children, who were filled with love... but they had the strength... the strength... to do that. If I had ten divisions of those men, our troubles here would be over very quickly. You have to have men who are moral... and at the same time who are able to utilize their primordial instincts to kill without feeling... without passion... without judgment... without judgment! Because it's judgment that defeats us

I have recently re read A Bright Shining Lie by Neil Sheenan and believe there is still so much to learn from the French and US experiences in Vietnam.

History is replete with war stories of Asian fighters and there tenaciousness, their will to win, and pay the ultimate sacrifice.

And then there is Mother Russia in the Second World War, the west is just now learning the full extent of their sacrifice and bloody determination to repel the Wehrmacht..

I am in no way stating that US servicemen and women lack courage, honor or capability"win"

We will  get some idea tomorrow if the US population has what it takes to "win"

See you on Wall Street ?

"The problem I have with you and your ilk is that you only seem to rail against programs that target mainstreet..."

We see it from two very different perspectives I suppose.

What I see your side supporting is the destruction of entire family units (as in the blacks & Indian's to a large degree) by supplanting the father, with government. But I don't view you as "evil". I view you (and those who think like you) as just overly/hyper emotional.

As to the MIC...you must have missed the many times I advocated closing our military bases in Europe. I've been quite clear on this. Many saw it, Ned Zep, tip e & others. My reasons are fiscal and a blunt US populist instrument on socialism in Europe...I have no reason to lie...that is my reason.

But still, the entire Pentagon budget is 700 billion which seems to be pocket change to Barry. Where we might have agreement between you and "my ilk"...lol...is ending the Fed and its reliance on Keynes orthodoxy.

You must understand something though...when this happens the ponzi collapses. Less fiat for military & welfare. Choices are what we as a society make together. The first choice we make together should be to tell the truth.

My game is about to start...I'll check back at halftime...maybe we can get a closer understanding of each other.

"... just overly/hyper emotional."

Well, that's your opinion; at least I know I am a human being. Do you work hard at repressing your conscience, you know: the thing that separates a human from a psychopath,  or have you just allowed it to be more or less conditioned right out of you? You know that humans are, in fact, social beings, right? If you don't believe me try solitary confinement for the next few months and see how well you function at your office's Christmas Party in December. Perhaps you should get yourself checked out by a psychologist before such an endeavour, you could already be 'there'...after all, you seem to prize subclinical psychopaths in your country:

http://economistsview.typepad.com/economistsview/2011/09/paul-krugman-free-to-die.html

That article wasn't a dig at RP, btw. I like the guy. I think he should team up with Ralph Nader and balance your country the fuck out. At least you could be pretty certain that neither one of those two would chose financial institutions over the American people. Can you say 'Mixed Economy'? Try it, you'll find that it is the most successful in the world, even in the face of incessant attack by fundamentalists like yourself.

I'm sorry, but if you think your country will function better with 'Zero Gov't' you haven't tried to reason with even a small  group of people with slightly differing values and opinions, let alone 310 million of them.

How long have you been advocating 'closing our military bases in Europe'? If it's been less than 50 years you should know full well that it's hardly been cost effective sending jolly green giants all over the planet (and not simply to Europe) to stir up hornets' nests with their privates on behalf of western/European international business interests. You could have been Norway since 1950 and had it all instead of stealing wealth from Americans to feed global corporations and the MIC for the last 65 or so years, no?

700 billion per year is only what is on the books, btw; do you honestly think that is the actual figure, all told?

'...a closer understanding"?

Yeah, we agree your country is more fucked than a whore at closing time, but we certainly do not agree as to why. Your wilful blindness prevents that.

What to do now? According to you: "Kill Kill Kill Kill Kill the poor". IE economically decimate what is left of your middle class and push them down below the poverty line, where they can compete with the tens of millions already there for an ever shrinking slice of economic pie. While keeping the MIC alive in MENA, apparently, and migrating any wealth that happens to be left into the few hands that already have almost everything anyway. Or do you really believe that once you take away the remaining shreds of dignity of the majority of your population that this will somehow inspire them to excel to magical greatness?

"Honor, glory, duty... those words mean so much to a man scrubbing garbage cans..." - Bill Murray.

And those with a job even like that will be the lucky ones. I doubt they will be able to afford health care when it's over 7k/head/year (the highest in the world, including those with absolutely no insurance at all; it goes WAAAY up if you don't count them as if they could afford it.)

Question, you believe that 9-11 was an inside job, right? Do you believe the same thing about Pearl Harbour? If so, what is the point of having any military bases anywhere but right in America? I mean, if it really is simply 'defense' and not imperialism: the last time a foreign army stepped on American soil was in 1812, right? (I heard they burned down the Whitehouse too.)  Even though the cold war is supposedly over you still have enough nukes to turn the whole world into something worse than Fukushima, so it's pretty obvious nobody is going to try anything too stupid.

What does it matter? Does my location change any of the facts we're discussing? Ans. NOPE.

It is so painfully obvious that this is about your country and no other; you should be flattered anyone is taking an interest.

But yeah, let's have full ' eternal trust and honesty schmeee shcmoop poot' <chuckle>

So you just go ahead and post your mailing address, phone number  and full name and  then we can start, I guess. What, you're not afraid are you? It's just that, irrelevant though it is, I need to feel as if you're telling me the truth, or some other such twaddle about honesty being a function of location. (Note: if you do actually post that personal info., which is not only OT but none of my business, I'm sure to think you're pretty damn stupid to boot...)

"We have never discussed you're (sic) country/nationality under your GoinFawr ID...maybe you have multiple ID's?"

That's because it hasn't been relevant.  Unlike your jingoism which certainly is an important part of this discussion. But then flag waving is entirely your choice, and, as we have discussed before, I am under no obligation to disclose to you anymore about myself than I wish. Just because you bare your nationality to all at ZH hardly means everyone has to follow your lead. You must have missed the part in my last comment where I pointed out how unwarranted and arbitrary such a request is by sardonically asking for an even higher degree of personal information from you. Are you all caught up now?

I do wonder why my location is so important to you though. I have serious doubts about your given reasons for wanting to know;  I am sure it has much more to do with your desire to change the subject, as has been my experience dealing with loopy jingoists in the past.

You wish to know who you are speaking with: Ans. a reasonable human being (trying, at least). I can assure you that we exist on all continents, and in all nations, regardless of language, culture, or even religion (I had a bit of trouble with that last one, but I've seen undeniable proofs)

Attacking your people? My my someone seems to have a very high opinion of himself; I wonder how many of your fellow citizens feel as if they belong to you. Or perhaps you meant that in a tribal sense? Sounds a bit collectivist to me....

'Attack' is an awfully strong word; have you really reached the point where the US to you is like Israel in that disagreeing with any policy domestic or foreign, no matter how unconscionable, is considered an 'attack'? Sounds a bit extreme to me; you're not an extremist who believes in 'my country, right or wrong' are you nmewn?

I'm not misrepresenting anything, I'm trying to have a discussion about the American political landscape and the dangers of the position you're promoting, dangers that could aversely affect a very large swath of those you so paternalistically call your people. You're the one hanging the thread up on some ridiculous irrelevant principle that you've likely concocted to avoid actually having the conversation, because you know you'll soon wind up having to try and defend the indefensible.

So what if in your narrow eyes I am just another 'ferengi troll' or whatever, that hardly addresses the completely valid points I've raised.

Write me off indeed, what a coward you are nmewn. Either that or you know that you haven't a leg to stand on.

The point at which you decided to make a comment to me is when I called Pelosi an economic terrorist. And the record of her premeditated destruction is very clear.

She is an economic terrorist.

The thing about being a non US citizen is you don't get a vote here GoinFawr...and my people (yes, tribal sense) now see just how much damage so few socialists can do in such a short amount of time. Its a lot like giving a monkey a hammer in a glass shop isn't it? ;-)

We (here) have to do this to ourselves every thirty or forty years, it seems, as some sort of weird validation of who & what we are. We'll pull through just fine, so don't concern yourself too much over it. If we could survive Carter and come back stronger than ever we will survive this latest batch of bile that has bubbled up from the university class.

As to your drivel about "valid points"...you haven't made any. Not one. None. All I see is red herring after red herring.

You started off with you having a "problem" with me and "my ilk", but then you can't seem to lay finger to what exactly it is, that is, you cannot or refuse to properly define it. You bring up mainstreet, then discard it. You bring up our national defense, then discard it.  And finally you refuse to enlighten the assembled masses here at the Hedge of your own place of birth or residence...out of embarrassment...one can only assume.

I have far more respect for SuddenDebt & falek (among others) than I will ever have for you for that simple reason.

So run along and snipe from a Fawr...you're like BB hitting an elephants ass.

These self-immolation protests are extremely powerful and gripping.  For centuries, they have been a sign of extreme frustration and helplessness within societies and a way of putting everyone on notice that things are about to boil over.  Even in repressive states this form of protest has proven effective at shaking TPTB.  It is horrible, but also hard for the press to ignore and the rulers not to acknowledge with some kind of response.....which then feeds on itself as others respond to the response.  It is the type of action that has the potential to become a black swan event.

If I were long Mr. Market this weekend, I would be a little nervous.

There's a political utopia which the faceless machinery in Brussels is chasing at all costs and is described as "one european family" and praised for the "prosperity and stability" it has brought for "the family". And then there's this, the reality.

It's disturbing to see an image like this. One picture speaks louder than the endless propaganda coming out from the office of the reincarnation of Baghdad Bob in Brussels day in day out.

But what i find even more disturbing is the lack of interest, criticism and action towards the undemocratic and tyrannical EU-regime by the masses in almost every country in death errr eurozone.

Cancel the NFL season unexpectedly this fall and you'd have riots in every major city in America.

THAT's how you get a revolution. Interrupt the pipeline of mindless entertainment and gadgetry-based amusements and the boredom of the idiocracy would erupt into a social movement against Washington that would make the French Revolution look like a town hall meeting in comparison.

1) Before Medicare there were charitable hospitals which took all patients and turned none away.

2) People with access to socialized medicine die, too. Any system imaginable will result in at least some deaths. That's life. If we are to use the standard which you apply to free market medicine and charity to examine the other possible systems you must admit that no matter which philosophy you embrace you'll have to be willing to see some people die. So you can drop the holier than thou crap.

Farmers in India too have been doing this by the hundreds for basically the same reason for many years - dealing with money lenders!

But they, of course, never threatened to bring down the financial system of India or any other country and have mostly been, and continue to be ignored by the International media - perhaps because they do not become burning torches but do away with themselves by drinking pesticides.

Ever heard of 'bride burning'? You're right about the poor Indian farmers killing themselves by drinking poison ( not just pesticides - bleach is another fave) but then there are all of those Indian mothers-in-law who acidentally spill kerosene on their son's wife in the kitchen who then accidentally goes up in flames so that he & Mom can keep her dowry and he's free to go get himself another. And another. In some families these accidents happen three or four times. And of course they are so routine that they never get reported.

No Jack. The policeman would have been a treasury agent and would have ripped the jackets off of the nearest bystanders and thrown then over the burning bank to put out the fire. Then the bank, instead of showing gratitude for the bystander's (involuntary) donation of jackets to extinguish his pain, would have foreclosed on their homes for being late on their payments.

They just quit paying on their mortgages.  Millions of them.  They're just saying -- "OK, so if these assholes don't have to worry about the rule of law -- if they just get an extra trillion when they fuck up -- AND they get to keep the profits they made while fucking up -- why should I pay?"

2 Americans immolated themselves in 1965 to protest the Vietnam excursion; Norman Morrisson and Alice Herz. Co-incidentaly, the tide began to turn.

How do you fit 160 joos in a volkswagen? In the ashtray.

An Israeli told me that one. In Israel. In a group of Israelis.

Person clicking red arrow - is it because the joke was tasteless, or that a Jew told it?

I would have never thought to tell such a joke, even to non-Jews. They made light of a horrible event. I think it is called gallows humor.

I once got drunk on a bus with an Israeli with the slave labor camp tatoo on his arm. All the other Jews on the bus were yelling at him when he lit up a joint.

They had no sympathy for his early life experience. I did, so I encouraged him to keep drinking and smoking.

Does that make me better than the Jews on the bus?

In the next few months to few years all of us will be challenged regarding our attachments to "The Story Of Me". We think we are the director, the star and the writer of our life play. We play by the rules as our play is within the play of greater society and nature. As the fiction we have built our lives upon crumbles, we have two options, attach to our expectations and suffer or see reality for what it is and adapt. You are not the things you own, nor are you your portfolio. You are PLAYING A FUCKING MEANINGLESS GAME then you die...period!!! You give it meaning only by thinking it so.

Am I frustrated that parasitic bankers have enslaved the world? YES!!! Am I looking forward to the collapse of the ponzi schemeS? YES!!!

Will I allow the bankster game players to manipulate me into being their bitch debt slave? FUCK NO!

Prepare for the worst and accept events as they occur and attempt to stay alert and ahead of the wave, catch it and ride it!!!

Food! Seeds! Cash! Guns! Ammo! Medicine! Bugout Plan! (moving to less populated area) Collaborate! Communicate!

All this other shit will just happen. It is best to be prepared and just get out of the way and enjoy the wipeout from a distance.

We hope the poor get themselves out of poverty. But we aren't delusional enought to think that they can be helped out of poverty (57% of people below the poverty line have cable TV) by a government program. And since this reliance on Big Government is the "religion" of choice to the ignorant and corrupt, and since this religion is crashing and burning this time around just like it did in Communist Russia, Communist China, Communist Cambodia, Communist Cuba, Communist (name goes here).....etc., all that is left of these religions fanatics to do is resort to HATE. But if history teachs us anything, it is that eventually this hate will turn much uglier. And then the question will be..... wait for it.... how many people will be massacered this time around in the name of this other "religion of peace" - Socialism.

This guy, like all of us, made choices. He chose to be stupid, and failed at the arithmetic. Yes, it is sad they would not redo his loans. Sadder that he thinks burning himself up because he is going to lose his STUFF is a good idea.

It's stuff, people. I am not my cars, my house, my clothes, my silver and gold, my guns. I am me. Not the things I have, or in this idiot's case, the stuff the bank lent him.

You cannot borrow your way to happiness long term. Ask my older fellow babyboomers. They borrowed and spend, and now are going into retirement with gigantic mortgages and debts. They borrowed stuff they could not pay for, confusing success with physical things that are rented, and now must pay the price. Hopefully the good will come when younger people understand that to borrow is to be a slave.

I tried to explain to a college kid once that taking a student loan and renting a nice apartment, getting a big screen, a new car stereo was the stupidist thing he could do. I explained that the apartment, the tv, the car stereo, would all be distant memories but the loan payments would still be there 20 years later, but I had no effect. Stupid is as stupid does.

I have no sympathy. Let them drink Drano. The banksters took advantage of greed and stupidity. Nothing new there.
