From Arab Spring To Greek Autumn To European Winter

Tyler Durden's picture

Yesterday in Tunis:

Today in Greece - A man pours a flammable liquid on his body to set himself on fire outside a Piraeus bank branch in Thessaloniki in northern Greece September 16, 2011. The 55-year old man had entered the bank and asked for a renegotiation of his overdue loan payments on his home and business, according to police, which he could not pay, but was refused by the bank (Reuters).

Tomorrow in Europe:

A poor person lives in a shack eating from dumpsters. Not borrowing hundreds of thousands to purchase shit. This is an idiot who got himself in too deep.

You barking bill, need to investigate real poverty.

"an intelligent blog populated by remorseless stingy ignorant selfish types who hate the poor."

Most, if not all, of us at the Hedge were poor starting out in life, so I don't know how you get to we "hate the poor".

Unless of course you're a statist who wishes to empower the government to confiscate what someone has earned and redistribute it to people who have not earned it.

You are apparently under the impression that I'm/we are rich and should be taxed more to encourage the poor to do what...exactly?

Yeah! Kick the orphans into the streets, put `em to work in the asbestos mines,  those little blighters, what did they ever do for  Nmewn anyway?!  Social responsibility? That`s just one o` them there  `externalities` you commies! I`m all right so eff all the rest!

Don`t tell me, you consider eugenics one of the hallmarks of civilization, right? (I mean as long as someone can turn a profit selling the body parts, of course. What? Haven`t you ever heard of "A Modest Proposal"?)

Curious,  is wealth inherited `earned` in your absolutist `I have deluded myself that I am an independent Island of eternal self sufficiency` sociopathic worldview?  Yeah, yer no`statist`. unless of course that `redistributin` comes in the form of a blank cheque to the Military Industrial Complex.

You know, some people (don`t fret I know this has absolutely no relevance to the likes of you)  judge a society by how they treat those that they consider the least of their citizens.

Hypothetical, but I've got money on my flank that says nmewn`s tune would change faster than Ayn Rand's should he get chronically ill and become incapacitated (ie unable to earn) only to discover that his `keep it in the black` private insurance won`t pay for treatment because they deem it a `pre existing condition`?

My guess is that despite your assertions to the contrary, you have absolutely no idea what it is to be 'poor'. You just think that because you've worked hard enough, or been lucky enough to better your lot that everyone, no matter how much more disadvantaged than you they are than where you started out, everyone should be able to 'stiff upper lip it' to your idea of 'success'. And if they fail, well, they didn't work hard enough. Bullshit rote, that.

I know nmewn, you think you`re going to be six years old the rest of your life, good luck with that!

Your bark is worse then your bite.  Look in the mirror and you'll find one contributor to the level of poverty in the U.S.

Are you looking for the daily beast or huffpost?

You remind me of the dead kennedys and holiday in cambodia. The song could have been written about you.

BTW, I spiked jellow in the side when he crowd surfed in chicago back in the day - he called us facist nazis in chicago. I suggest not doing that before crowd surfing.

There is something called compassion fatigue.  Sometimes there is just not enough compassion to go around.  This fellow is at wits end because he cannot meet the obligations to which he agreed, or at least that is what one can surmise from his act.  Maybe there's more to it, either within him, or regarding the bank.  Maybe the bank should cut him some slack, or maybe this man's eyes were simply bigger than his stomach.  Maybe he wanted too much in life, or felt a self-imposed need to portray himself as more than he was.  Maybe he forgot that every act or committment carries with it consequences, and adults are responsible for their own actions.  All that is unknown.

Whatever the circumstances, what is known for certain is odds are he lives better than at least a billion people in this world, who cannot even fantasize ever having even one percent of what this man may have lost.  Those billion don't know that some people consider access to credit a basic human right.  Those billion people don't all light themselves on fire.  Even though each and every day is a search for calories, and a day off means a day without, and there are no social safety nets whatsoever, these billion persevere, take on life's challenges, and even find time to enjoy.

Perhaps it is dependent on expectations, and those who never had any tend not to feel disappointment when what they never expected doesn't come to pass.  Whatever it is, compassion is not in unlimited supply, and there are times when it is easier to allocate it toward someone who doesn't give up the fight, than toward someone who chooses this sort of statement that pains his family and undoubtedly results in costs of time, emotion and money to others.

Chindit13, I totally disagree.  I am a small businessman and for at least a decade now I have watched the large corporations with which I compete being given a pass on debts, obligations and contracts in general.  They receive cash to keep running from the same Government that taxes me to give tham that money.  They can break laws on a wim and never be held accountable.  But, I can garantee you that if I did much of what they do, my ass would be put in jail so fast it would make my head spin.  So how do people like me, and I on the other hand assume the man that fried himself, compete?  The answer you gave is simple.  Bow down to the fascist empire, resistance is futile.  No thank you.

I will continue to be the pebble in the shoe of the uber wealthy lawless group of elitests that claim to be doing God's work as they pick and choose winners and losers all the while destroy our Country.

On the other hand some people cannot take it any longer and choose to no longer play.  This guy reminds me of the end of the book, Brave New World, but then again that is what we have.

It's the Geithner plan, unlimited support for the banks, the banks starve the people, then take possession of the assets on the cheap.

Great Explanation!  How long will the status quo be given a pass on financial losses, environmental abuse, and a total disregarde for the law?

As long as they still have something to lose, they will hold on.

It's when they've got nothing left that they become dangerous.

C'mon, man.  Fight fuckin' Club 101:

It's only after we've lost everything that we're free to do anything.

Fatass americans won't do shit until there's no more television; no more cheap, mindless entertainment; no more paycheck; no more lifestyle that's subsidized by the third world.

Fatass americans won't become anything until they are nothing.

Lisa: What are you gonna do?
Creasy: What I do best. I'm gonna kill 'em. Anyone that was involved. Anybody who profited from it. Anybody who opens their eyes at me.
Lisa: [Whispering] You kill 'em all.

bunch of pusses, all of you.  It's easy to say you wouldn't burn yourself to death now, but let a few hard decades wear away at your soul:  flames will be a blessing.

What's some flames and a rather long few minute(s) of pain--as you're cooked--compared to indefinite starvation and loss?
