Are Big Crude Price Swings Coming?

Tyler Durden's picture

Some curious headlines just out from the ICE via BBG:

  • ICE TO LIMIT BRENT, WTI PRICE MOVEMENT $1.25/BBL FOR 5 SECONDS
  • ICE TO SET INTERVAL PRICE LIMITS ON CRUDE, GASOIL FROM APRIL 1
  • ICE TO LIMIT GASOIL PRICE MOVEMENT $10 A TON FOR 5 SECONDS

Either SkyNet is about to take over the last bastion - the commodities market, or the ICE knows something we dont... Or this is just a completely coincidence.

Countries are going their own way on oil and threats are accelerating the matter.

And fomenting the destabilization of China is not going to address the issue.

Oh, for fuck sake. There have been big crude swings in every fucking commodity possible as the smart algos whipsaw the market at their leisure to generate volatility to rake in the moolah. Hopefully, they all drown in their paper shit trading when the trading ship sinks. Meanwhile, only the holders of physical assets will get to ride high and dry throughout the financial shit storm that is coming. Let them eat paper ! Buy the fucking dips, and shove fiat and stock certificates right up their arrogant Romney Mittens asses !

I am really not qualified to have this opinion ... but ...

The base in Syria is strategically very important to Russia. By upping the garrison there, they send a signal to NOT fuck with their base. Maybe Assad goes bye bye, but don't fuck with our base.

As far as China and India goes, with regards to Iranian oil, I can only assume they are being handled through diplomatic channels. All the probably care about is getting their oil.

Totally. I'm so cynical these days I actually think France Intel could have planted that whole "Jewish" attack to co-incide with a War on Iran. I know, I know...

In any case the seed has been set in Europe once again with the old Jewish divide and conquer play. (Its actually painful to see how transparent these plays are these days).

Cue public mass hysteria over a sure to be found "Iranian" anti semite so said public is on board for the War effort.

Add crippling pump prices / inflation and derivative expected public outrage.

Result = Justifed Iraninan War.

p.s. Just dont mention the nukes or lack of nukes - its not important.

Implementation for Skynet commodity control begins on April 1st.  First moonless nights in April are on the 21st.  So figure a range of April 20th thru 23rd as being the best times to begin an air strike.   I would bet we see other evidence of preparation along with this though.   And more disinformation as well to keep everyone on their toes.  And look for something to happen a week or two before which really paints Iran as the bad guy in order to polarize public opinion.  These things are planned well in advance (and if the fact that we've surrounded Iran with military bases isn't conformation of that then I don't know what is).

Time to place Vix bets?

What in the HELL are you people talking about.

Bombing Iran to stop development of a nuclear bomb helps oil how?

Look, people, here is the meme of oil.  "Production is down because there's not enough investment in places where . . . production might be down."

Iran has been pumping oil for 70 years.  How the FUCK long did you think that could go on?  Why would investment change the INEVITABILITY of Iranian oil production declines?  It could find a bit more here and there, if you poured money into drilling more wells (that is what "more investment" means, btw, drill more wells, not to *find* more oil, just to access the smaller and smaller pockets of what is already known to be there).

So you hold off the decline for a year doing that.  Big fucking deal.  What does that change about the I word -- Inevitability.

This is absurd.  War isn't going to change this.  You want to have a war that actually changes the oil situation?  Then bomb China, depopulate it and achieve the consequent loss of their consumption.  That's the only way.

The oil purchases will be made with rupees that will be repatriated for Indian exports.  When rupees are an acceptable medium of exchange for the two parties involved, why would India volunteer their gold?

And besides, how the fuck much gold do you think India has that they can buy oil with?  Pull your head out; even the most gold-rich country in the world, nor any others, could afford to buy even a year's consumption of oil with their gold reserves at present market value.  Now, WHY would any country sell off all their gold reserves for less than a year of oil?

Tue, 03/20/2012 - 14:29 | 2274040 Thought Processor
Thought Processor's picture

Its not just about the oil.  Its about the combination of the control of oil along with various currencies around the globe.  The US and by extension the western powers can't keep other countries under the western thumb if we don't control their energy and limit their own control of their finances.  Therefor the US dollar king will only live on if we can control the oil.  Iran still has the number 2 or 3 reserves worldwide.  They are one of the most important players in here and will become even more important as oil production rates decline.

The one last aspect we truly dominate with is our military and guess what, if you have a hammer...............

Iran is looking like one big nail!

Q the article form the Sentance this morning talking about central banks intervening in the commodity markets

From the FT this am:

"Given that central banks can’t “print commodities”, or for that matter release commodity inventories into the market — direct influence on commodity expectations would otherwise only be achievable via the futures market. But even here it would be hugely imprudent for banks to sell commodity futures if they didn’t have access to underlying inventories.

That said, there’s no reason why central banks couldn’t start buying commodity futures so as to anchor inflation expectations pre-emptively instead.

Once a large position on the futures market was acquired, central banks could then tweak supply and demand — a.k.a buy and sell — in such a way that commodity price expectations could begin to be centrally managed."

The problem is that there are still some huge unknowns in here.   The first is whether or not Iran already has nukes under its belt, given to it from various other sources (North Korea, China, who knows).  Case in point would be the Cuban Missal crises where, largely unknown to US intelligence agencies, the Cubans already had over 140 or so tactical nuclear warheads ready to go in case of a conflict.  They had been transported by Russia long before the ICBM's were noticed on the ground in Cuba.  And we didn't know it.  Robert McNamara essentially admitted this in the Fog of War.

The Cuban Missle crises would have gone nuclear in a nano second.  It almost did.

Scary Excerpt from Wikipedia:

In early 1992, it was confirmed that Soviet forces in Cuba had, by the time the crisis broke, received tactical nuclear warheads for their artillery rockets and Il-28 bombers.[72] Castro stated that he would have recommended their use if the US invaded despite knowing Cuba would be destroyed.[72]

Arguably the most dangerous moment in the crisis was only recognized during the Cuban Missile Crisis Havana conference in October 2002. Attended by many of the veterans of the crisis, they all learned that on October 26, 1962 the USS Beale had tracked and dropped signaling depth charges (the size of hand grenades) on the B-59, a Soviet Project 641 (NATO designation Foxtrot) submarine which, unknown to the US, was armed with a 15 kiloton nuclear torpedo. Running out of air, the Soviet submarine was surrounded by American warships and desperately needed to surface. An argument broke out among three officers on the B-59, including submarine captain Valentin Savitsky, political officer Ivan Semonovich Maslennikov, and Deputy brigade commander Captain 2nd rank (US Navy Commander rank equivalent) Vasili Arkhipov. An exhausted Savitsky became furious and ordered that the nuclear torpedo on board be made combat ready. Accounts differ about whether Commander Arkhipov convinced Savitsky not to make the attack, or whether Savitsky himself finally concluded that the only reasonable choice left open to him was to come to the surface.[73]:303, 317 During the conference Robert McNamara stated that nuclear war had come much closer than people had thought. Thomas Blanton, director of the National Security Archive, said, "A guy called Vasili Arkhipov saved the world."

The crisis was a substantial focus of the 2003 documentary, The Fog of War, which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature

Unless up until two years ago the daily volume in the low thousands wasn't normal. I guess trading 600k contracts for corn every day is supposed to be normal instead of the 2000 contract a day average prior to 2009.
