What difference does it make if you are carrying a gun or not?  If somebody wants to shoot you, they will and you couldn't react fast enough.  This is the trouble with having easier access to firearms in the US (whether from another state or not), the country as a whole has the potential for absolute chaos.  I wonder how the gunman obtained his firearm, from a corner shop?

You do realize the irony of your statement is  that your avatar is Gordon Freeman from the Half Life series, and most of the game involves blowing up and shooting things with everything from pistol to a missile launcher.

Also in the game, Gordon is fighting against a facist dictatorship police state in which the population are imprisioned into districts and unarmed, and bullied by a nazi style police force called the Combine.

You sir, are no Gordon "the last free man"  Freeman.

pretty defeatist attitude, what are we supposed to do then, simply acknowledge that we are at the mercy of every gun totting criminal who we may cross paths with? there is nothing to be done about it, is that it? rely on law enforcement to keep us safe when that isn't even their job in the first place? all the big brother tech in the world can't get the police to you quick enough to save your ass if somebody decides to try to punch your ticket...

what difference does it make if you carry a gun or not?

it makes all the difference, it gives you a fighting chance at saving yourself, somebody you care about or the stranger you never meet who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, just like you. but then again, to take action in such a situation requires a certain amount of willingness to take personal responsibility for your own, and others safety...

and that is something, that a gather from your comment, you would rather not be burdened with.

Trouble's afoot, gents.  I am blocks away from there in fact my company has offices on the 15th floor.

Story in local press: disgruntled employee of a Walgreen's pharmacy at street level.

7 shots fired, 10 injured two killed.  At least one dead was a bystander, but who isn't?  Gunmen shot and killed that's the other EDIT: NOT GUNMAN.  Girl says he died with "some kind of red helmet in his hand", audio on the scene in the comments thread, someone get this before it goes POOF:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/us-news-blog/2012/aug/24/empire-state-bu...

Rumors of a bomb in time square from my park ave building foyer security guy.  Rumors only.  however all security companies have a network with law enforcement and fire drills recently (last year ago) mention riots and civil disorder in their "in case of..." disclaimer.  Recently they started showing us where the building fire tower was located and building fire towers have been written back into building codes recently.

The 7-to-Midtown train in and out were shut down since 9am.  My commute.  Excuse: stalled vehicle.  I rerouted myself and grabbed the E at CitiBank.  I've seen this before, the city takes limited steps to lockdown.

[I'm updating on the fly]

7 shots fired.

GET THIS AUDIO ZH BEFORE IT GOES POOF!!!!

EDIT 10:42am >>> OK here is the dope from my security guy at 2 Park Ave, who talks to the ESB security guy.  Apparently my guy walked by there this morn and there was a very angry and violent gent pounding on cars outside ESB out on the street.  My guy kept walking on to 2 Park.  He said that then his guy at ESB - another "guard", but really they are more like a theater ushers - called him to say that there is a big fight outside.  My guy says that there are lots of underground clubs sprouting up in the area.  oh man, I can believe it, I have a Korean buddy who operated a downstairs club in K Town a few blocks away, it was behind the facade of a Korean restaurant.  Anyway my guy reports seeing men come up out of clubs at all hours, raging.

So I'm calling NOT A TERRORIST CONSPIRACY, NOT A DISGRUNTLED WORKER.

PAF calls it BATH SALTS, BITCHEZ!  The hush hush would thus be old style NYC hush, ssshhhh this is a good neighborhood.  A ZHer below mentions the ESB IPO below and I doubt this would be good for it.

Apparently, this was an extended club fight that turned very very bad.   Where were the cops on a Friday morning?  Oh that's right.  PENSION TROUBLES!!!  The only disgruntled workers were the COPS who didn't SHUT IT DOWN.

NEW YORK CITY, THANK GOD YOU'RE BACK.  I'VE MISSED YOU SO!

WHOA, wait a second, roll back my bath salts call:

Construction worker Chris Ogden was working on a scaffold above the building’s 33rd St. entrance when he watched in disbelief as the gunman — in a suit and carrying a briefcase — opened fire.

“He shot the guy in the head,” said Ogden, 23. “The guy went down. He took a second shot when he was down.”

The well-dressed shooter then “walked down the block, like nothing was happening, real casual,” Ogden said. “We were screaming from the top, ‘It’s the guy in the grey suit!’”

"I am dedicating this week to the victims of Aurora, Colorado Cinemark Theater mass murders by exposing the insanity of “Gun Free Zones” and calling ALL elected officials, opinion leaders, celebrities, and businesses who support the insanity of gun control exactly what they are… accomplices to mass murder!

I know that sounds harsh, but someone has to speak up loud enough to be heard over the cries from those who perpetuate the unilateral disarmament of responsible citizens, giving criminals, terrorists, and the deranged ZERO resistance to carry out their assaults, rapes, murders and massacres.

Here is the leader of the Gun Grabbers Insane Asylum and mass murder accomplice,  New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg  suggesting that Cops should go on strike until Americans give up their guns!  Not only is he insane to think that Americans giving up guns would make us all safer, he is even more nuts to think that the Cops believe Bloomberg’s line of BS.   Cops confiscated over 4000 guns from criminals in Bloomberg’s Gun Free City last year alone!

It is INSANITY to believe that more gun control will make us safer.

Criminals, terrorists, and the deranged DO NOT follow gun control laws. Never have and never will.

Watch this nut case, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg reveal how crazy he really is… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-R4tsZ3cxfQ

Really Michael? New York has some of the toughest gun laws in the country, making New York City one of the happiest hunting grounds in the world for criminals to attack defenseless victims. You can’t even keep your own city safe after denying your citizens the right to carry a concealed handgun.  You have to be absolutely insane to suggest that the rest of the country follow your dismal lead and give up their ability to defend themselves. You are even more out of touch with reality to think that Cops are as crazy as you are!

Sane Americans, even non gun-owning Americans are no longer buying the anti-gun BS coming out of the usual suspects in Washington DC, New York City, Chicago, San Francisco and the other cities where citizens have been stripped of their ability to defend themselves.

Anyone can see, due to so many real world examples readily available on the Internet, that when you have an armed, trained, responsible citizen in a public place EVERYONE IS SAFER and such murderous rampages as have occurred countless times in “Gun Free Zones” just can’t happen.

The answer is to arm and train our responsible citizens

here are just a couple examples of hundreds of news videos that prove responsible, armed citizens make us safer and gun grabbing elected official like Michael Bloomberg are insane.

These news videos didn’t get national coverage because a responsible, armed, trained citizen was present and took care of the threat immediately. As a result it was a “non story” for the national media. No blood, no tears, no wailing families who lost loved ones, no reason for reporters to look sad and reflective as they describe the carnage as many ways as they possible can for days and days, while playing the scene of the mass murder over and over and over again.

Nope, there was no tragedy here. Just one responsible citizen with a gun taking care of a social problem and saving everyone around him BECAUSE HE WAS ARMED!

Make sure EVERYONE sees this… http://www.ignatius-piazza-front-sight.com/2012/07/25/front-sight-blog-because-americans-and-cops-arent-insane-like-bloomberg/

and this http://youtu.be/OpR5oMMuE38

and this http://youtu.be/YTct7OB_n78 and so many other examples...

Politicians, city officials and businesses who support “Gun Free Zones” are killing us with their lunacy and have blood on their hands with each murderous rampage that occurs in their fallacious “Gun Free Zones.”

Albert Einstein defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

Well let’s ask our elected officials, opinion leaders, the news media, and those businesses who support the insanity of gun control and “Gun Free Zones” how many more Americans are they willing to kill by continuing to disarm responsible, trained citizens WHO CAN STOP a deranged gunman BEFORE he can massacre disarmed and helpless citizens?

How many MORE times are our elected officials going to pass gun control laws, enforce “Gun Free Zones” or consider signing an Arms Treaty to circumvent our cherished Second Amendment and expect a different result than what we received at the midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises?

It is INSANITY to believe that more gun control will make us safer.

Criminals, terrorists, and the deranged DO NOT follow gun control laws. Never have and never will.

Any politician, opinion leader, news pundit, or business owner who thinks otherwise is the poster child for Albert Einstein’s definition of insanity.

And while you are at it, ask the 50 or more who were wounded and the hundreds who feared for their lives in that “Gun Free Zone” theatre if they would have liked to have had a gun of their own to protect themselves and those around them when a madman walked right in and started shooting?

NOBODY could stop him, because there wasn’t another gun, a LIFE SAVING GUN, in that theatre!

Ask your elected officials, opinion leaders, the news media, and those businesses who support the insanity of gun control and “Gun Free Zones” when they are going to wake up, get smart, look at the data, look at the statistics, look in the mirror and realize they are WRONG… DEAD WRONG about guns?

When are they going to admit to themselves that they are KILLING Americans with ignorance and gun control schemes?

We still have a choice in America. We can either remain free and safe by throwing out our insane, elected officials who continue to support gun control in spite of all evidence that it is a dismal failure or we can sit on our hands, doing nothing and watch another criminal or nut case who could care less about gun control laws and “Gun Free Zones” kill another group of helpless, disarmed victims.

We still have a choice in America. We can refuse to support businesses that enforce the insanity of “Gun Free Zones” and throw our support to the those businesses that recognize everyone is safer if responsible, trained employees and customers alike are allowed to carry a concealed weapon to protect themselves from those who attempt to terrorize and murder.

You still have a choice in America. Exercise your choice and make sure everyone you know sees this e-mail blog and encourage each person you know to send it to everyone they know.

To me the wierdest thing about these type shootings are the odd reactions of the other people in the area. Videos I have seen of recent incidents show:

1. Most people totally unconcerned and going about their business like zombies.

2. About 25% trying to take photos/videos with their cell phones.

3. Others sitting there, practically camped out, or else wandering around aimlessly, watching like its some kind of new reality TV show that might become of interest to them.

4. A few people trying to help victims, but not many.

I would think a "normal" reaction would be to either help people or get the hell out of there.

See this NY Post video  (about half way down in their article) for what I'm trying to get at.   http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/manhattan/shot_at_empire_state_building_Ycd08ZMPwDQf7r8qSKX3yO

Your # 1 is typical for the NYC natives.  Shit happens constantly, and no one has the time to worry about most of it.

#2 and #3 are probably tourists.

#4 is rare no matter where you go or what happens.  See how many mall-shoppers run over to help an old lady up after she trips getting off the escalator.

There seems to be much needless argument over CCW in states like CO and IL. In 2003, CO passed a preemption law that means that CO state gun laws will override those of any municipality within it. IL has no such law or clause within its existing body of law (last I checked). So Chicago can basically ban handguns entirely, but you can walk into a store and buy one outside the city (or county).

Not sure what NYC has, but I'm willing to bet it has no preemption. It is not a friendly place for people who take responsibility for themselves.

NYC is unique in that the State Legislature passed a specifically stricter gun control bill-- the Sullivan Act-- 100 years ago, just for the City.  Then, over the years, the rest of NY State got very restrictive gun control as well, but it still isn't as strict as the City restrictions passed by the State.  Sort of reverse preemption.

   Not sure what NYC has

If you have a NYS handgun license and/or CCW, getting it recognized in NYC is generally pretty simple paperwork.  (Technically, the handgun licenses are given at the county level, though.)

Getting that initial CCW takes some effort.  Handgun licenses themselves are relatively easy--just pass a safety course.  But that doesn't give legal right to pack--you just get to own a handgun for home protection and can carry it (in a case) to ranges to practice.

It's not too hard to get whatever they call the "sporting" license for rifles/shotguns in NYC.  You can buy those elsewhere in the state over a counter provided you pass the FBI instant-check, and sometimes the gun-shop owners make you come back the next day.

I wonder how many of the victims shot on the street were actually shot by the cops?

On another note, has anybody noticed how all anti-gun people are State worshipping bootlicks who desparately need to project a messianic quality onto public servants? For them it's "all and unlimited power to the cops and the government, because I trust them with my life".  They're perfectly comfortable with militarized police and even with the military performing police funcitons. The thought of taking personal responsiblity for their own self defense makes them ill.

I wonder how the wives/girlfriends of these guys feel knowing that their husband would rather let them be raped, and call the cops afterwards to clean up the mess (if they survive) than to actually shoot the perpatrator before damage is done.

Somewhere back in the comments, a Tinky little minded trollglodyte insisted that it was the TRAINING of the cops that made them superior.  To witless:

"Cops are TRAINED to deal with such situations, in blinding contrast to gun-toting private citizens."

Fab training there Dewdles.
