Art Cashin Remembers 9/11

Tyler Durden's picture

Via UBS' Art Cashin,

A Few Personal Comments – A few years back the "New Yorker" magazine ran a whimsical cover showing how “egotistical” New Yorkers might conceive a map of the United States. Satirically it depicted the nation, with three-quarters of its focus on the island of Manhattan. Ironically, after the atrocity on September 11th, the nation’s heart, its concern, its generosity is disproportionately focused on New York in almost the same manner.

Similarly, in each of our lives, the picture we view of the world around us would surely have had us as the dominant feature of the canvas. Yet after the tragedy of that Tuesday, with its image of victims and heroes, of smoke and tears; none of us shall see ourselves so large again. There will be room in that picture for others – many others.

Valuing language and the words that give it shape, meaning and impact, I have always been fascinated by that special group who once wrote for the aforementioned "New Yorker" – James Thurber, Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley, Alexander Woolcott and E.B. White and others. In simpler times (how foolish! Almost any time was simpler, safer, more secure)...let me start again.....my love for the writers that Harold Ross brought to the Golden Age of the New Yorker (and thus to the legendary "Algonquin Table") was to the comedic/satiric group. The events of 9-11 led me back to E.B. White.

He was terrific, but given my satiric leaning I only loved or, at least remember three things about White – his marvelous book on writing style, his caption for a legendary New Yorker cartoon in which an obstinate kid, responding to his mom's explanation that what's on his plate is "broccoli, dear" says – "I say it's spinach and I say – the hell with it!", and – of course – his short story called "The Hour of Letdown" in which a computer built to play chess against a human, stops after the event to have a drink. (I'm not sure why I love that story.)

Nonetheless, the atrocity on September 11th recalled another E.B. White essay. It was (I recall) written over 50 years ago, back when the UN was moving into Manhattan from its early life in "Lake Success" on Long Island.

Much of White's essay, written over a half century ago is filled with meaning and moment this day. It has recently been republished as "Here is New York", if you care to see more. Here are some of the things that bridge generations:

"The subtlest change in New York is something people don't much speak about that is in everyone's mind. The city, for the first time in its long history is destructible. A single flight of planes no bigger than a wedge of geese can quickly end this island fantasy, burn the towers, crumble the bridges, turn the underground passages into lethal chambers, cremate the millions. The intimation of mortality is part of New York now; in the sound of jets overhead, in the black headlines of the latest edition."

"All dwellers in cities must live with the stubborn fact of annihilation; in New York the fact is more concentrated because of the concentration of the city itself, and because, of all targets, New York has a certain clear priority. In the mind of whatever perverted dreamer might loose the lightning, New York must hold a steady, irresistible charm."

"....New York is not a capital city – it is not a national capital or a state capital. But it is by way of becoming the capital of the world...."

"....Once again the city will absorb, almost without showing any sign of it, a congress of visitors. It has already shown itself capable of stashing away the United Nations – a great many of the delegates have been around town during the past couple of years..."

"This race – the race between the destroying planes and the struggling Parliament of Man – it sticks in all our heads." "The city at last perfectly illustrates both the universal dilemma and the general solution, this riddle in steel and stone that is at once the perfect target and the perfect demonstration of nonviolence, of racial brotherhood, this lofty target, scraping the skies and meeting the destroying planes halfway, home of all people and all nations. Capital of everything, housing those deliberations by which the planes were to be stayed and their errand forestalled."

Thank you, Mr. White! (Mr. White earlier in the essay noted that New York and New Yorkers – and all Americans – do good, do what they do, and have traditionally defied logic and their enemies by not only surviving but actually thriving. And all that was true even a half century ago.)

A More Personal Thought – Many of us got out that Tuesday walking through streets onto which ash, smoke and business envelopes fell snow-like, blocking both your view and your breathing. Yet when a stranger was met, they were invited to join the convoy and offered a spare wet cloth (carried in pockets) through which to breath as they walked. When we reached the East River (Brooklyn side of Manhattan), there was a volunteer group of tugboats, fishing boats and mini-ferries that looked like the evacuation of Dunkirk. No charge. No money. Just – "May I help you!" No one got anyone's name. No thank you cards will be sent. But Americans – even New York Americans – who freely give to strangers but argue with neighbors were suddenly one group.

In the days since, as we wander via new strange ways back to Wall Street, we all internalize the survivor’s quandary. We are lucky to be alive – but why us.

As I noted on TV – none of us headed back to re-open the markets with relish or avarice. The President, the Governor, the Mayor and all officials asked that the markets re-open to provide a means for the economy to work – to unclog an artery.

Day after day, traders, clerks and the thousands of folks who support them walked to work. No spring in their step. Resolute to do their job, they are civil but somber. As they pass checkpoints, they say "thank you" to the policemen, firemen, and National Guardsmen who may have lost brothers saving us and some of our friends.

Ironically, the only smiles you see in Wall Street are on the photocopied photos of the missing that family and friends have taped to walls, mailboxes and lampposts. It may take a long time for smiles to naturally return to Wall Street. It may take a long while to find those criminals who took our smiles and our friends. But, we will have patience.

As our President said – "We will not tire. We will not falter. We will not fail!"

Many people can handle the truth. You can't handle the truth. You have the word truth in your handle and your blog, curious then that it contanins anything but. "WHEN THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH COMES, HE WILL GUIDE YOU INTO ALL TRUTH; FOR HE WILL NOT SPEAK ON HIS OWN AUTHORITY, BUT WHATEVER HE HEARS HE WILL SPEAK, AND HE WILL DECLARE TO YOU THE THINGS THAT ARE TO COME." (JOHN 16:12) Good stuff, i see now that the Russians did it and you are not pretentious at all or anything like that.

Better convene a fresh 9/11 commission with fewer Depublicrat politicians on it ... maybe a jury of randomly selected citizens instead.

Because it ALREADY FAILED, big time, and poisoned the well with lies while the guilty went free.

The 9/11 Hijackers: Fraud in Official Video Exhibits Uncovered by Expert Panel

NEW YORK, Sept. 10, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- A Panel of 22 researchers into the history of 9/11 has uncovered evidence of fraud in the photographic images of Muslim hijackers prior to boarding the planes on 9/11.

Court exhibits state that leader Mohamed Atta took a commuter flight from Portland, Maine, to connect to AA Flight 11 out of Boston, which hit the North Tower.

The dubious images heighten the mystery of why Atta left Boston, where Flight 11 was to be hijacked, and risked the failure of his entire mission by driving to Portland September 10, staying overnight, and booking a tight connection back to Boston early September 11.

a few days ago tip e. canoe posted this link. . . Afghanistan is not a war, but a parasitical occupation by corporate amrka, profitable for them, deadly for everyone else, genocide,

We have startling reports of human trafficking, children being stolen around Afghanistan and sold into sexual slavery by the tens of thousands, stories of terror bombings and assassinations meant to prolong war, rig elections, end negotiations and compromise and control key regions to maximize drug profits.

With full access to “on the ground” intelligence in every province of Afghanistan, the truth about that war will make you sick.  Not one word that hits the press is true.

http://www.veteranstoday.com/2012/09/02/breaking-afghanistan-americas-to...

people might want to continue to seek deeper truths about amrka, and not rest with what they believe they already "know" - as always, more truth is revealed incrementally, over time. . .

Fuck Bush, Fuck Obama and Fuck Romney .. toady i was reading the American Revolution to remind myself what has caused it in the first place

"The American Revolution was the result of a series of social, political, and intellectual transformations in early American society and government, collectively referred to as the American Enlightenment. Americans rejected the oligarchies and aristocracies common in Europe at the time, championing instead the development of republicanism based on the Enlightenment understanding of liberalism. Among the significant results of the revolution was the creation of a democratically-elected representative government responsible to the will of the people"

is fucking history repeating it self all over again? we have finished from creating one enemy in 2001 and now we are moving on to create a new enemy "Iran and China", in 2011 the US Government has spent above 700bn just to break the chinese "Pearl of Strings".

welcome to the #NWO carnival folks - it wont end until we have a one world government or enough people realize that is the agenda

the truth is no one made it out alive that day - just like in 1913, no plan survives contact with the enemy and liberty cannot prevail in a nation of cowards

my friends, your friends, family .. they died in vain if we do not face the truth of this great crime and false flag event, if we do not confront the real criminals of 911 our tears will not shelter those lost souls

human life is precious - but the enemy clearly sees us as little more than livestock

The ability to recognize that your "I don't recognize" can be read both ways is key; it is an affirmation of the thing and its opposite...

Also notice that "9-11" is a powerful switch that takes most everybody instantly to an alternate reality of their own choice. Try it, turn it on and observe those around you next time you are in a group.

I'll stop here. Enough for me today :)

Of course propaganda is a powerful switch... Both for those who recognize it as propaganda and are therefore repulsed by it and by those who who are mystified by the propaganda itself. I have no interest in supporting "personal accounts" that are little more than an extension of a propaganda campaign, whether they are aware of it or not. And the rejection of the official account is not, in and of itself, an alternate reality. It is simply denying the official alternate reality. I said somewhere else in this thread, what the ultimate truth is (the non-alternate reality, I suppose) while important, is not as important as the mere fact that the story we have been asked to believe is clearly a lie.

I'm in New York today and just got back from the  media 'show' adjacent to the World Trade Center.  All the corporate media is there along Vesey St. to hammer home the official narrative.  I saw Gulianni, Schumer, King, Patakii and Bloomberg preening themselves and surrounded by 'serious' guys with concealed carry and eyes that constantly question whether your camera is a weapon (used properly, yes).  We have the beautifully constructed 9/11 Memorial pools that, literally, sets the official narrative in stone.

I saw one fellow (there were many, though not nearly enough) wearing a "9/11 Was An Inside Job" t-shirt, eyes blindfolded with an American flag, standing alone, stoically handing out business cards that read "SEE THE TRUTH" and "www.AE911Truth.org".  He was arrested within 20 minutes, cuffed and walked off to be cited for obstruction.  He was back within the hour at a new location where he continued his calm vigilance!  Many took photos and his cards.

His action versus the mega-phonies and their monster propaganda machine....

Afghanistan doesn’t export opium paste anymore.

Key Americans, many elected officials, some military, aided by foreign intelligence services, India, Britain, Canada and Germany have built the world’s heroin processing industry there.

Shipping is handled by the Northern  Alliance, for the local market, Afghanistan is a nation of addicts now, and the massive Russian market.

Europe is handled out of two bases, Camp Bondsteel in Kosovo, where the US flies heroin and turns it over to the Kosovo/Albanian mafia for distribution and to Belgium, where it is distributed for Northern Europe.

Much goes directly to the United States via long range drones of the private air force of CIA contracting companies, shipped as “rendition prisoners.”

One does not have to be a religeous conspiracy theorist to understand that historically symbolism has been used as a language of its own. Ask any competent artist.

As for the symbolism of the numbers 666? 666 can also be 18 and can also be 9. For that matter 144,000 (Yes, a biblical reference) can also be 9. Go figure... there are several interpretions of the number 9, but for some it means "human or man".

... and of course we associate 666 with Satan. Odd that it reduces to 9, eh?

And unless you believe in a completely planned world where there is a multigeneration generational force (a hidden hand, per se, maybe holed up un a fortress in Switzerland or moving from Britain to the US to Israel ... as others believe; or ever moving westward until it circles the globe as still others believe) then there is no point thinking about the numbers because they would have to be planned to mean something, eh?

The truth about 9/11 is bigger then the event itself...becaue it blows the lid right off the whole damn truth about what life is all about as we know it and the meaning of it.

It doesn't even need to be that big of a hurdle, but it is. There are so many pieces to point to... I challenge people to watch the film Fog of War...listen to how callously McNamara can reference the value of a human life. When a military commander can view some percentage of casualties as an acceptable loss to accomplish some stated goal, why does anything stand outside the realm of possibility? There are then quite literally hundreds of available dots to connect... Not pointing to the absolute truth of what happened, but to the absolute absurdity of the version of truth that we have been asked to believe. What the truth could be is important, but not nearly as important as the lie and what the lie means about our existence.

why didn't either building fall over sideways

Put in the most basic terms: buildings DON'T fall over sideways.  Gravity is pulling DOWN.

If you want a building to fall over sideways, you have to apply a lot of energy to make that happen.  It's not as easy as making a tree fall over sideways, because the tree retains its structural integrity when you start hacking at the bottom, but the building won't.

Didn't intend that to sound patronizing....it's just that that's how buildings collapse.

You see it in earthquakes, too.  Buildings go "straight down" because the weight of each falling floor starts the next floor down falling...straight down.

I don't believe the "official" 9/11 story myself, but my skepticism has nothing to do with the buildings falling into their own footprints.  That's pretty much just how that happens.

I think it's a better question to ask WHY they buildings fell.  But regardless of the cause, the most common way for them to fall would be ...straight down.

Tue, 09/11/2012 - 12:24 | Link to Comment Christophe2
Christophe2's picture

Your reasoning is flawed because it assumes that there suddenly is nothing holding up any of the floors, all at once.  There is no reason for dozens of floors to fail simultaneously unless someone has detonated timed explosives.

If the building had fallen due to fire, then pieces would have slowly started falling wherever the structural damage reached a critical point: the building would have had small pieces fall off from time to time, perhaps until some fairly large chunk or area was damaged enough for very large sections to fall down.

There is NO REASON for the first 60-80 floors to suffer a total collapse like they did, nor is it even feasible for a simple fire to have pulverized everything at once...

(Did you used to call yourself "LondonLad" in another time and place?)

I'm NOT saying the buildings were not demolished.  I don't know why they fell, and demolition is a good possibility.  I think that should've been clear if you're actually reading my posts.

All I've said is that: buildings tend to fall straight down when they collapse.  If it is the case that buildings generally tend to fall down sideways, it's hard to understand how a city could ever remain standing if *any* structure were to collapse due to earthquake or flood or whatever.

I don't *think* you're claiming that buildings tend to fall over sideways, but really, you haven't said much of anything.

I have never been Londonlad, whoever that is. Nothing mysterious about me.

What I've said, in case it isn't clear, is that if a building were to ever collapse, it would look much different than this.

What I've said is that the structure of the buildings, especially the central cores of the two towers, offered much resistance. Collapse without demolition would have looked much different.

blunderdog's picture

Yeah, I get it, you reminded me of someone I knew somewhere else.

I'm far too skeptical to believe your assertion, that's all--a building collapse can be caused by numerous different factors and can cause different results.  For sure, you can look at the WTC buildings and say they look like they were imploded by demo-crews.

But given the TINY number of modern steel/concrete buildings that have collapsed in any way OTHER than controlled demo, it's not a very compelling induction.  There just isn't much to compare it to.  And now, unfortunately, it's hard to imagine finding any way to prove anything after the fact.

My perspective on the events of that day has always been commonsensical.  Giuliani starting "cleanup" IMMEDIATELY, the announcement of the collapse of building 7 20 minutes too early, the instant identification of the "hijackers" by the Feds, a doubled insurance payout to a brand new owner of the buildings, etc etc.

There's just no *proof* to be found of anything, though.  Weird shit happens all the time, and it's not always the work of man.

And as I said: there haven't been any collapses of steel/concrete skyscrapers to compare anything to.  That's why I can't show you a collapsing building AND why I say your opinion that "the collapse didn't look right" is worthless.

I suspect WTC 7 was imploded.  I suspect something very odd was done with the 2 towers.  I just don't think your "desired conclusion" is proven.  I'm content not to *pretend* to know the answer.

You don't need a fucking national disaster to be decent.

Something that has been lost? Like decency? Then spell it correctly.

Narcissist.

If he were here, I'd throw shit in his fucking face, and in yours, too.

Whatever... opportunists (sp again)

There's nothing decent about opportunistically and narcissistically publishing shit and benefiting from this treasonous crime--or about supporting and defending such tripe. Define decency as you like.

People who care pursue the truth.

The rest deserve SHIT.

Son... were you actually in Lower Manhattan on 9/11 and walked home that day? Cashin was simply recounting the day in a way that many of us remember.

Let's leave it in the club.
