Just two days ago we tweeted the rather stunning 'slogan' that a happy-smiley joy-joy bunch of Audi-China staff 'celebrated' at their dealership. The somewhat subtle translation of the banner: "We will kill every single Japanese person, even if it means deaths for our own; even poverty will not deter us from reclaiming the Diaoyu Islands" has now been addressed by Audi management:

Actually German cars especially MBZ, BMW & Audi drive like studs. Try driving American after taking a Benz for a spin. No comparison.
If I want to piss my $ away on something that will depreciate 60% in 4 years(German or American) I'll buy the US$. I owned a 1998 BMW 5 series Sport-nice car but a waste of $-at the end w/70k miles on it stuff was going bad left and right-now the wife's 2001 camry w/160K on it I have never sunk a dime into.
I think what's happened to the US auto industry is nothing short of criminal. I find it impossible to have so many engineers be so stupid and incompetent. I understand they have made rather large strides in quality/design but they should have never dropped to the lows they did. That was very irresponsible and inexcusable.
That being said, I am not a fan of German cars at all. I find them to be overpriced, extremely costly to maintain, their rock hard suspensions suck eggs and the fact that they usually require premium fuel is another surcharge that simply makes me bypass them completely. I realize that some will maintain the illusion that they need a hard suspension for handling while doing 3 mph on the 405 but .... I suppose that is a matter of opinion.
I have looked to Lexus and the Hyundai Genesis with great success. They offer much more for less money and I like their overall philosophy and approach.
Had Mercedes, nearly emptied my bank account. Had BMW nearly emptied my bank account. Had an Audi, it nearly killed my wife.
And...in the mean time I have a 1999 Ford with 165,000 miles on it and TOTAL repairs to date are 958.43. Americans don't know how good they have it right here at home.
As for the Chinese, the day is near when the banner will have USA on it not Japan. You know that to be true.
I know two Audi owners, and they love their cars. One was given a free SUV and he sold it to keep his Audi.
I drove domestics all my life then I decided to take a BMW for a test drive. I bought it and never looked back. There isn't a domestic rattle box that even comes close to driving as well as my BMW.

The Japanese also tend to have a strange denial or under estimation of how butt-hurt the Chinese still are over the invasion of their homeland, which wasn't even more than 70+ish years ago, which is barely anytime passed at all. Reading the history books about past wars and their ramifications tends to continue on for a few hundred years.

Unfortunately the Chinese do not understand how much damage they do, to themselves and their future prospects, every time they act in the way they are apparently prone to act. Many years ago I read several books about the era of the Mao fans and their little red books and 'cultural revolution' happenings. It was an extraordinarily viscous, violent, unjust and arbitrary time, and I had ascribed this almost unbelievable mass-craziness to the excesses of hardline communist ideology, isolation from the rest of the world by culture and language, and to extreme brain-washing regarding reactions to mere claims of people being a 'counter-revolutionary' this or that.
But more and more I now suspect it's actually the character of the Chinese cultural mentality in general, and not some passing mania due ideology. They rather seem more prone to being entrained by radical and very stupid gushes of jingoism. The State knows this and simply directs its' blast where the state wants it, as a tool of policy.

Audi/VW have been in China for over 30 yrs now. They were already a part of the Chinese landscape when I first went there 20yrs ago so nobody is ever going to attack VW/Audi dealerships. Just as Ford is deemed British by most people in the UK, Audi/VW is ubiquitous in China. They won't ever get attacked. It's really odd, because the cars most coveted by the Chinese yuppies were the big 4x4 imports from Japan when I was there.
No doubt the "Yakusa" is busy planning to burn down a Chinese kindergarten in Tokyo in retaliation for the implied slight, and so on until we get a nice ember smouldering for a full inferno. Another really odd thing about the Diaoyo/Senkaku business is the timing. The Japanese would NEVER have been so blatant over the years on this issue because it would have been like shooting themselves in the foot as far as their investments and exports to China was concerned. So why now? My guess is, just like every other fucker in government, they've been listening to Krugman and smoking his war pipe.
