Maher really does share many of RPs values, as a Liberal I share many of RPs values, the thing is that I will not back a candidate with zero integrity like Gingrich or Romney, but I would vote for Paul. At least with Paul you know what you're getting.
We liberals want to end corporate welfare as much as "conservatives" wish to end personal welfare, and these things are really two sides to the same coin which is that the government taxes people to give the money to someone else... which must be ended if the country has a realistic chance of survival in a meaningful way.
This is why I oppose SOPA, the MIC, Farm subsidy, the occupation of the rest of the world, etc.
Government Regulations should not be used to exclude people from markets and protect market share for others, but at the same time, we can't have companies dumping benzine where ever thy wish and sharks putting idiots into debts they cannot pay back.

Maher likes Paul's positions on Foreign Policy and Civil Liberties. THAT is why he is so friendly with Paul.
One comment that Maher once made that really stuck out at me - giving me insight as to why such an strange bedfellow relationship exists is this... He once said something along the lines, to paraphrase..

I used to like Bill Maher back when he WAS a little Politically Incorrect. He used to say he was a Libertarian too.
I don't expect comedians to have the slightest understanding of economics, but it IS important that they speak out about drug legalization. Many economically informed people do not sufficiently appreciate how the "War on Drugs" (gag) started by Nixon, and coincident with closing the gold window, is at the root of the runaway political corruption in Amerika, the growth of the prison-industrial system, and the loss of respect for the police.

You don't have to live in your moms basement to collect food stamps. You can own everything outright and have a fat bank account as long as you are not earning income. They base food stamp elegibility on income--not assets. I signed up for food stamps for a couple months after my 99 weeks of unemployment ran out and declared all of my assets, home, car, bank accounts, stocks(not my PM's) and other unrelated government checks and still qualified. $270 a month in free groceries--no wonder prime steaks are so expensive lol.

While Ron Paul is a strict consitutionalist when it comes to federal powers, the BILL OF RIGHTS... which enumerates rights EVERY INDIVIDUAL HAS NATURALLY is the ultimate 'law of the land'. INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS is what Ron Paul is ultimately championing.
You could have local governments enforcing whatever biblical law they wanted, however, they would NEVER be able to IMPOSE that on YOU since you have an INDIVIDUAL right to practice your own religion. And if you owned a house smack in the middle of a religious nut job local government's district, they would not be able to FORCIBLY remove you from your abode due to private property rights.

He hasn't come out and said anything like, "I would never support the institution or codification of Old Testament Law or penalties on the state level in any manner as as I am a civil libertarian who believes in freedom of religion and freedom from religiious tyranny for alll Americans."

I'm certain they will have to work at it some. It's been my experience that state legislatures are more easily bullied by religlous nut jobs and the bankster/predator class. That's why ALEC is so successful on the state level.
