When Bill Maher, hardly a conservative, says that he applauds Ron Paul on his positions, and calls those Paul detractors in his audience "brainwashed liberals" it is safe to say we have seen it all. And so, once again, Ron Paul is officially cool.

And from a Dem point of view, it makes the most sense to "support" the candidate most likely to split the GOP vote.

Maher really does share many of RPs values, as a Liberal I share many of RPs values, the thing is that I will not back a candidate with zero integrity like Gingrich or Romney, but I would vote for Paul. At least with Paul you know what you're getting.
We liberals want to end corporate welfare as much as "conservatives" wish to end personal welfare, and these things are really two sides to the same coin which is that the government taxes people to give the money to someone else... which must be ended if the country has a realistic chance of survival in a meaningful way.
This is why I oppose SOPA, the MIC, Farm subsidy, the occupation of the rest of the world, etc.
Government Regulations should not be used to exclude people from markets and protect market share for others, but at the same time, we can't have companies dumping benzine where ever thy wish and sharks putting idiots into debts they cannot pay back.

Maher likes Paul's positions on Foreign Policy and Civil Liberties. THAT is why he is so friendly with Paul.
One comment that Maher once made that really stuck out at me - giving me insight as to why such an strange bedfellow relationship exists is this... He once said something along the lines, to paraphrase..

My real fear is that RP doesn't get the nomination. Then, much like his prediction about the housing bubble, a full blown currency crises will descend on us, which, by then RP will likely have passed on, and there will be NO HOPE.

I used to like Bill Maher back when he WAS a little Politically Incorrect. He used to say he was a Libertarian too.
I don't expect comedians to have the slightest understanding of economics, but it IS important that they speak out about drug legalization. Many economically informed people do not sufficiently appreciate how the "War on Drugs" (gag) started by Nixon, and coincident with closing the gold window, is at the root of the runaway political corruption in Amerika, the growth of the prison-industrial system, and the loss of respect for the police.
