Boulder Weekly Cover Story: "Adults Take Teen Jobs, Leaving Kids Unemployed"

Tyler Durden's picture

While the full story can be found here, the cover of this week's Boulder Weekly probably explains most if not all there is to know about the US "recovery"

I drove thru Boulder right after the Hope & Change 2008 coup/putch.  Lots of Hussein/Biden bumper stickers.  I guess "it ain't workin out" so well.  Boulder is freakin college town kept afloat by endless state and govt welfare to the university to support dope smoking plagarizing profs who "teach" womens/gay/black/grievance studies.  Not to mention dumb kids taking out mega loans to learn how to score drugs, get drunk and try to get laid.

If Boulder is hurtin - you know times are bad.

Weird but up here in our socialist haven of Canuckistan most of my kids' friends have jobs (16 years old +). Add to the fact that they make $9.60 ($10 US) per hour (minimum wage for kids under 18) and that that goes up to 10.25 (almost $11 US) at 18. I guess there are just more jobs when companies don't have to worry about stupid excessive health care costs (a tax on the economy courtesy of health insurnace companies)

For the time being...

My wife has a couple of kids there.  One has a decent job working with a financial (US) entity (gasp): it's one of the few financial institutions that hasn't been ID'd as fucking up; he's had the job from before all the economic turmoil hit.  The other kid is working several junk jobs (as she finished up school and will likely find little prospects).

Yes, when companies don't have to worry about the added healthcare costs... but, it's a zero sum game in that it still comes out in the form of business taxes: a good example of all this is Britain, which, under Thatcher, has gone back and forth, only to find (have they figured it out yet?) that it really doesn't matter.

Are those jobs usually fixed-term or more secure arrangments?

If the former, then you only demonstrate a side effect of unbinding healthcare from employment.

If the latter, then you have something to talk about how Canada made it work.

A less secure job is better than no job. Single payer health care improves labour flexibility and for example makes it easier for people to go off and start their own businesses ... oh and it costs less. Canada spends far less per capita than the US and overall has better outcomes. Win - win.

Canada is one of the largest exporters of oil in the world and other natural resources.  This creates wealth.  You also do not have a mu*lim leader - you actually have a conservative PM with b*lls.

I have a daughter in College,(and that used to be covered until age 23 on my current plan)

I think the '26' age requirement is a bit Marxist AND would cover any

children she may have up until 26. <shudder>

I'm betting my self insured Company just LOVES this....

Hey punk, if you even think that you could be in my line of work, you are sadly mistaken.

I know, you are a former marine/airborne/seal/lawyer bad ass and all.

I put some info pertinent to the 'conversation' and you are all up talking shit about me and you know absolutely nothing about me. That MY employer covers MY health insurance is actually none of your business.

go back to "My Space" and pick your favorite song or something more at your skill level.

It became my business when you - like a dumb ass - posted it publicly.   A fake SEAL.  Who went from the Marines to the airborne (Army) and back to Navy as a SEAL.   I guess that happens in Tom Clancy novellas.  Even Colonel Kurtz wasn't able to that shit off.

I guess even if it is true you was supportin the elites destroying America and the muzzie in chief.  Nice job.

Yes, America's "Fourth Turning". Jobs will be scarce because of technological improvements.  Women will be leaving the work force and returning to traditional roles. That is my insight into the problem.

Technology will continue to replace jobs: humans are lazy, management doesn't want to deal with managing humans.  And at some point it'll take itself out of the game because there won't be enough "employed" people to purchase its products.

Clearly the number of external household jobs will diminish.  And, yes, you are correct in that we'll be returning to more "traditional roles."

and just what "traditional roles" would those be?

housewives? who's pulling down the income to support that?

working class women have always worked, as have their older children, contributing support to the home/family. . .

this "jobs will be scarce because of technological improvements. . .women will. . .return to traditional roles" sure sounds like the nonsense sold in the 50's to get females out of the workforce & catering to the "heroes" of WWII. . .

Father Knows Best fantasyland.

May I remind you that in the last 30 years $40 tn were transferred from the middle class to the rich assholes ?!

Take back crap fiat and crap assets (along with crap debt)?

These people won't be able to fend for themselves in a world that diverges  toward reality.  No need to spend a lot of energy kicking them in the butt: yeah, it would be nice, but it won't really change anything, other than suck up valuable time from those who would be better off preparing for the new future.

You think people will go after the "rich assholes"? Ain't going to happen. When things get really bad for ordinary people they go after each other. Read the posts here. The young will blame the old. The white country boys will blame the blacks. And everyone will blame the Latinos. Inter-generational warfare, race warfare, but no class warfare. The oligarchs count on this. Henry Ford once said he could employ half the population to kill the other half.

Correction: It wasn't Henry Ford who said this.

TYLER  /  We love you.  BUT...this new "website interface TYPE FONT" is extremely difficult, and unpleasant to read.

The new FONT is very unpleasant on one's eyes.  It is NOT inviting, in our opinion.  Keep working and moving forward (like you always do) to improve the site.  Though, you might want to "re-consider" the TYPE fONT (and style).

Keep up the good work our friend.  just please re-consider changing the TYPE "font & style" back to what it was, and back to a more traditional one.  I think you'll lose a few readers (in aggregate) if you don't.

Seriously why do teens need to work??? They get handed everything by mommy and daddy.  Even 20 somethings are now regarded as 'kids' and seem to have this peter pan syndrome where they don't want to grow up, just work as a waiter or waitress (sure don't try to earn money in a REAL JOB when mommy is providing everything for you) or as part of the Men and Women in Red (Target team members)...    I mean every young person I see has an Iphone, is wearing designer clothes, probably has a $200 a month gym membership and goes green by riding around the city on a  $3,000 road bike.  The only thing more annoying are their apologist bleeding heart, Obama Republican Parents (the ones who always voted republican prior to 2008 but only voted for BO out of guilt and fear of riots)

The 'middle aged' adults (the ones these 20 somethings hate by default) are the ones getting royally screwed by this administration and in looking for a job. Most HR & Recruiters are arrogant 20 somethings who look like they just left college and are more interested in hiring people who will 'fit in' and be fun to be around and to go on company 'outtings' than someone with actual experience.   Again, its single white middle aged people (say 40 and up) getting screwed who likely pay the highest percentage of taxes but not quite rich enough to own a home in a high cost area like NYC or Boston and have to deal with this ageism & lookism in the hiring process.

And regarding Applebees, Outback?? White trash central if you ask me.  The wait staff seems to get intimidated if someone comes in wearing a button down shirt and pants that aren't from JC Penny or Kohls (or who isn't covered in tattoos wearing jeans on their hips)

Uh. Scuse while I inject a note of reality....

Did it ever occur to you that maybe (part of) the reason we have no jobs in the country is that we have some 30,000,000 illegal aliens willing to work for far less than minimum wage? And plenty of employers willing to hire them and risk the nominal fines if caught?

Sure but who needs a job when mommy & daddy and VISA & Mastercard make a $299 Smartphone every year with a $120 a month plan possible along with being able to spend $200 on a designer shirt ??? I always wondered how this was possible for these college age or just out of college kids?? Even if they are working (excluding Wall Street) many are probably making $40,000 - $70,000 a year which leaves very little discretionary income left over after the 'adult expenses' are taken into account.

Crosscurrents --

1) "real" jobs replaced by internships -- domestic outsourcing;

2) Paid internships no longer paid.  Slaves, not wage-slaves.  So who can afford to be such an intern?  Someone from an affluent family...

Yup, they spend $55,000 a year (plus summer school) for a year of college and give their kids probably $10,000 a month spending money so they can shop on Newbury Street in Boston...   With those types of parents, why would young adults inconvienience themselves looking for a job?? I mean these days, if you are middle class you probably should just goto community college and learn a trade and gain real skills while than waste time in some $55,000 a year non Ivy League School thinking you can network with the elite for a job on Wall Street.

God knows I hate to be the compassionate one on ZH, but there are many poor families where everyone works for peanuts, and the kids need jobs too just to help the family get by. With so many American families living in poverty - relative and absolute - some kids don't get college books or decent meals if they can't find a low paid job. I mean - what is it, a quarter of kids are on food stamps? Yeah, it's society's/marxists'/bankers' fault... but the kids are still living it, right here and now.

And this is one area where everyone's a victim, teen or older. Even middle class teens need the money, experience, and the sense of responsibility that comes with a job. (Who wants to have even less savings before they start college?) Adults in 'teen' jobs need positions that don't pay half of what they require just to make the rent and utility bill, never mind groceries.
