Brent At $126 As Israel Security Cabinet Votes 8 To 6 To Attack Iran

Tyler Durden's picture

Looking at the tranquil sea that is the S&P one may be forgiven to ignore the rapid intraday surge in Brent which was up over $3 in a few hours, approaching $126 once again. But why? After all the FOMC minutes were oh so very slightly hawkish, and not to mention that the Fed's scribe Hilsenrath told everyone at best the Fed would proceed with sterilized QE which would leave risk prices untouched. Maybe it has something to do with this. According to Israel's NRG, in a just completed cabinet vote, for the first time Netanyahu has gotten a majority (8 over 6) supporting an Iran attack. NRG also notes that at this point Israel has decided to not wait until the US elections in November before proceeding with sending crude to the stratosphere. From NRG (google translated): "Israeli political sources believe that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a majority Cabinet support Israeli military action against Iran without American approval....He announced that he would not hesitate to perform the operation without the approval of President Obama mentioned the precedent of the decision to attack the Iraqi reactor, Prime Minister Menachem Begin, and with the comments heard yesterday some cabinet ministers say privately that "It sounds like a speech preparation for attack." Political - Security Cabinet 14 ministers. According to estimates, at this stage tend to support Netanyahu and
Barak's approach eight ministers, and six against it
(including the traditional opponents octet: Moshe Ya'alon, Dan Meridor, Benny Begin and Eli Yishai).
" So... $4.00 gas is just around the corner. As is, probably, $5.00 gas. And $6.00 gas.

And from Richard Silverstein's blog:

Just when you thought it was safe to come out from your air raid shelter after Bibi returned from his U.S. foray to stoke up war fever, Maariv raises the temperature to a boiling point.  Ben Caspit reports (Hebrew) that the cabinet now has, for the first time, a majority (eight votes for, six votes against) favoring the measure.  This means that theoretically Bibi can begin an attack at any time.  Of course, it could mean something different: it could mean the cabinet has approved a strike at any point in future with Bibi determining the timing.  So it doesn’t necessarily mean the F-16s will fly tonight or tomorrow.  But it could:

Cabinet Majority Supports Iran Attack

The prime minister yesterday delivered one of the most combative and explicit speeches in the history of the Iran affair.  Several cabinet ministers said in private conversations that it sounded like a “speech preparing for war.”

Political sources judge that the prime minister has a majority in the cabinet which favors a military strike against Iran, even without American approval.  Yesterday, Netanyahu said he wouldn’t hesitate to attack Iran even without the approval of Pres. Obama…A senior official said Bibi believed it would be best not to wait for the November presidential elections because he didn’t trust the president to deal with the problem after the election.

So it appears that the dies is cast. Our ETA for the earliest possible offensive? Not before CVN-65 Enterprise reaches CVN 70 and CVN 74, sometime over the next 3-5 days. Of course, this is not a prediction of war. Just a logistical notice.

Between the Mideast conflict and the California Air Pollution Control Board, Californian drivers are between a rock and a hard place.

We will know California drivers are suffering from higher gas prices when they are no longer spending $30 to +$200 on car washing, waxing, and wheel polishing.

Californian drivers aren't between a rock and a hard place unless the "between" is the Apple store where I saw hundreds upon hundreds lined up waiting to hand over gas money for the new iPad. (Although, with credit cards today, they could've all just as well been lined up at the Ferrari dealership ready to sign a 12 month lease)

This is excellent news!

Oil prices will drop in the long run after the valuable natural resources are freed from the grips of the backwards, barbaric tyrants. Providing competing entrepeneurs with access to the resources will help relieve humanity's most urgent needs. This will help move us toward a more peaceful world organized by division of labor and free exchange.

It is a logically justifiable and cheap way to make the world a better place.

I only hope the USA joins in with Israel so that overwhelming force can be focused on the chosen targets. I'm guessing the strategy will be to blind Iran and quickly achieve air dominance. Then, act to prevent an annoying naval mine barrage in Strait of Hormuz. Next, take out the dozen "cancer treatment" factories located in underground bunkers.

My bet  and speculation posted few times on ZH:

- Attack by no later than March 20

- Oil spikes

- SPR release

- Oil down to $45 (so Obama hopes to get re-elected)

- Greek CDS auction (anybody remembers it?) is on March 19.

- Full market collapse  by 2000 or 3000 dow points in 1 or 2 days ensues.

I disagree.

After this recent SPR release the price of oil dropped less than $2. It was a joke.

A regional conflict with the possibilty of it going nuclear will create such a dramaicspike in oil that any feeble SPR release will do absolutely nothing.

Honestly, I don't know any American who would do that.

If I knew a neighbor was beating his wife, I would most likely employ the social apparatus of coercion, viz. the police.

Just like I would employ another apparatus of coercion, viz. the armed forces, to free the Iranian people from the cruel regime that they are subjected to.

Chinese citizenism would have treated the family much more kindly: the father would be sent to a "re-education camp" in colonized Tibet, the woman would have an enforced abortion before being permanently separated from the rest of her family, and the children would be generously given jobs in a bootleg Nike factory for 12 hours a day at 2 yuan per hour.

US citizenism. You've got an issue of overconsumption? The non consumers, the low consumers are the cause. Never the big consumers.

No matter how hard US citizens wish it, China is a small player.

Pushing forward Tibet (60 years ago) to make for Iraq, Afghanistan, libya, maybe soon Syria and Iran.

Wait for it, you are worth your last performance and Chinese tibetan performance dates back and is dwarfed by previous US citizen achievements like the US of A.

No matter how hard US citizens wish it, China is a small player.

China is hardly a "small player", being the world's leading source of CO2 and atmospheric pollution, having the second-largest economy, the highest rate of resource extration and exploitation, as well as having 1300 million people packed into an area about the same size as the United States --- and still growing!

So in other words, "Do as we say, not as we do".

Got it.

Hypocrisy, totalitarianism and blobbing-up: Hallmarks of chinese citizenism since 243 BC.

All of this threats of war sound like blustering. If Israel was seriously considering an attack, they would not talk so openly.

I come from a family of Armenian Christians who fled Turkey and found refuge in Iran in the wake of World War I. I don't like the leadership of the Islamic Republic but I certainly don't want to see Iran turn into another failed sectarian terrorist state like Iraq or Afghanistan under the occupation of the US. Just look what happened to the Chaldean and Assyrian Christian communities in Iraq after the fall of Baghdad. They were driven out from their ancient homes and many are now living in Iran.

Unlike the Arab nations, I believe Iran has a strong potential for positive political reform and it is a much different nation compared to the terrible times of the 1980s. Christians and Jews have relative freedom and I don't know of any relatives who were or have been harassed for their beliefs. The religious oppression of the regime is directed against Shia Muslims who want to leave their faith.

The sanctions and warmongering by Israel and the US only work to solidify support for the religiously conservative and nationalistic elements of Iran. An attack would be a disaster.

Yes, there is injustice, corruption, and political oppression of reformists but it is nothing compared to one of the West's great ally, Saudi Arabia.

I think you're looking at this situation way too logically. You think the fascist elements in Israel who want to launch this attack are unaware of blow-back of the sort you just mentioned? (i.e. an attack empowering the nationalist elements within Iran)

The elites in control of the Western governments and Israel are psychopathic and ultimately self-destructive.

They want a regional war large enough to create such a global crises that the sheeple of the world will willingly embrace a totalitarian global government.

It doesn't matter if billions die in a nuclear holocaust.

Not sure, but I think iodine tablets are meant for reactor-meltdown-type events--and are less effective the older you are. I've lived within about 40 miles of a plant for about 15 years now and acquired some KI years ago.

WHO says

"For adults over 40, the scientific evidence suggests that stable iodine

prophylaxis not be recommended unless doses to the thyroid from

inhalation are expected to exceed levels that would threaten thyroid

function. This is because the risk of radiation induced thyroid carcinoma in

this group is very low while, on the other hand, the risk of side effects

increases with age."
