Chart Of The Day: Smith & Wesson Sales

Tyler Durden's picture

The attached chart of Smith & Wesson revenues needs no comment.

Well one comment: when the final bubble does pop (and here we make the wild assumption that no intelligent extraterrestrial life will be found to bail out the central banks in time), at least everyone will be locked and loaded.

And some highlights from the just released investor presentation:

  • Record-level quarterly sales growth from continuing ops of $136.0M, +48.3% Y/Y
  • Record-level quarterly income from continuing ops of $18.9M, or $0.28 per diluted share
  • Record Adjusted Non-GAAP EBITDAS of $36.1 Million
  • Raised Full Year Fiscal 2013 Financial Guidance
  • Exceeded high end of upwardly revised sales guidance
  • Quarterly unit growth +30.1% vs. market growth +23.5% (Adjusted NICS)
  • Backlog of $392.4M versus $148.8 one year ago

Forward! (to the gun shop).

TruthInSunshine's picture

Exploding firearm sales can only reflect the reality that the economy is recovering very robustly and that Americans are feeling highly confident and optimistic about their personal economic and financial situation.

The graph shows a strong positive corelation to the TEOTWAWKI fear index. The "Backlog of $392.4M versus $148.8 one year ago" is stopping the sales from going vertical.

Bullish with a bullet.

Yes, but will any of them be able to hit anything?

"According to a 2008 analysis of NYPD firearms discharge data done by the New York Times, between 1996-2006 officers hit their intended target about 34 percent of the time"

SgtShaftoe's picture

NYPD cops only get 20 rounds (one box) of ammo a year to practice with.  Then they "qualify" in an air conditioned "square" range with uniformly symmetrical silhouette targets, that don't move appreciably, and are not under combat stress.  That's why cops have a rate of "accidental" deaths (murder) orders of magnitude higher than civilians and CCW holders.  Then take into account law enforcement salaries, and those that are attracted to that line of work (especially in the last 10 years)... recipe for disaster.

sunaJ's picture

Not the case in my department. 600 rounds/yr (but if you wanted, you could get over 1000), 2 qualifiers/y, and I guess with 200 armed personnel, about a third to one half are swat, ex-swat, or serious about training (more than 200 hrs/year), serving a population of 120,000. Maybe that's rare, but I doubt it. If you are inferring that CCW holders and "citizens" are better trained, that is a pretty big statement. Yes, you get some officers that shouldn't be carrying guns, if that is your other point.

Got Guns & Ammo?
Good.

I should make this my signature line.

I just made this up.  It's like that Got Popcorn? (meme)

People should make bumper stickers out of this saying.

People should make T-Shirts with "Got Guns & Ammo? on the front and "Good." on the back.

I give this to you for free.  Have at it.

You sound like the level-headed kind of guy that, when the time came, would use those 1000 rounds on the right side - the side of your community.

Cheers.

sunaJ's picture

Maybe I am level-headed, but I'm pissed as hell at these financial and governmental crimes.  The police officers and our citizen army need to remember their oaths more than their orders when SHTF.  It will come to that, and many will make the right choice.

EscapingProgress's picture

I have no confidence in the majority of law enforcement to make the "right" choice. They don't make the right choices now, so why would they make different decisions in the future? As long as they still have their pensions the majority of officers will simply default to the "I don't like it, but I'm just doing my job/duty" choice which seems to be a recurring theme for all gov't enforcers.

nyquil762's picture

He is correct in implying that CCW holders are better trained  (they almost always are) and your department (as you have described it) appears to be an exception. It also sounds like you guys are "over staffed'. I like the fact that you guys are well trained. However, I don't like that many cops on the street (per capita) because, it's tough on the municipal budgets and even tougher on the population (civil liberties).

You cops tend to find things to do when there's a bunch of you with nothing to do. Also, you tend to act as revenue producers (fines and fees) and tax collectors for the elite. Just sayin....

WTF? They only get 20 rounds of ammo per year, but they get 4 dozen doughnuts per week??

NoClueSneaker's picture

However, they managed to put 30-40 rounds in every "suspect" n****ah in NY who dines in an expensive restaurant and attack them the with the iPhone  ( supposed to look as an RPG )....

Practise is obsolete, targets r legit, ( thx to Nelson Rockefeller ), live sessions r a goode Xperience ....

Keep on exterminating, NY-Death-Squads - bullish fer your pensions :-P

Perhaps the goodly officers could spend some of their own money and practice a bit more.

Not lately they aren't!  Crooked barrels on revolvers and lousy accuracy on the M&P line.

FWIW, my M&P has been through two classes at Gunsite (http://www.gunsite.com/) without a hiccup.  And any accuracy problems are on me.

I like them best when they're reworked by Power Custom Handguns. My "model 10" PPC revolver is like like hammering nails at 100 yards.

1st time out & I can't hit a barn door at 20' with my Glock23. 1st time out with my M1a I shredded (somebody else's) target at 200 yards. But they are both great guns. And don't forget, NOVEMBER 6th IS NATIONAL BUY-A-GUN-DAY! Gunstores are currently full of guns that need warm, loving homes.

Anyone have a corresponding chart of the suicide by gunshot  numbers? The home defense crowd are 5 times more likely to shoot themselves or family members than any real or imaginary right wing demon.
