NYPD cops only get 20 rounds (one box) of ammo a year to practice with. Then they "qualify" in an air conditioned "square" range with uniformly symmetrical silhouette targets, that don't move appreciably, and are not under combat stress. That's why cops have a rate of "accidental" deaths (murder) orders of magnitude higher than civilians and CCW holders. Then take into account law enforcement salaries, and those that are attracted to that line of work (especially in the last 10 years)... recipe for disaster.
Not the case in my department. 600 rounds/yr (but if you wanted, you could get over 1000), 2 qualifiers/y, and I guess with 200 armed personnel, about a third to one half are swat, ex-swat, or serious about training (more than 200 hrs/year), serving a population of 120,000. Maybe that's rare, but I doubt it. If you are inferring that CCW holders and "citizens" are better trained, that is a pretty big statement. Yes, you get some officers that shouldn't be carrying guns, if that is your other point.

Maybe I am level-headed, but I'm pissed as hell at these financial and governmental crimes. The police officers and our citizen army need to remember their oaths more than their orders when SHTF. It will come to that, and many will make the right choice.
I have no confidence in the majority of law enforcement to make the "right" choice. They don't make the right choices now, so why would they make different decisions in the future? As long as they still have their pensions the majority of officers will simply default to the "I don't like it, but I'm just doing my job/duty" choice which seems to be a recurring theme for all gov't enforcers.
He is correct in implying that CCW holders are better trained (they almost always are) and your department (as you have described it) appears to be an exception. It also sounds like you guys are "over staffed'. I like the fact that you guys are well trained. However, I don't like that many cops on the street (per capita) because, it's tough on the municipal budgets and even tougher on the population (civil liberties).
You cops tend to find things to do when there's a bunch of you with nothing to do. Also, you tend to act as revenue producers (fines and fees) and tax collectors for the elite. Just sayin....

FWIW, my M&P has been through two classes at Gunsite (http://www.gunsite.com/) without a hiccup. And any accuracy problems are on me.
I like them best when they're reworked by Power Custom Handguns. My "model 10" PPC revolver is like like hammering nails at 100 yards.

However, of all my firearms, I find them the most accurate and dependable. Of course, any of my firearms shoot better than I can aim them, but still. If you can't do it with six shots, you need more range time.

Actually the OP was making a factual statement regarding the ramp up in gun and ammo sales which was not from any real Democratic policy, but from NRA and related propaganda designed to cater to a base and its fear of blacks, Muslims, terrorists, and gun control freaks from taking "their" country and guns from them. The NRA is nothing but a lobbyist for gun manufactures, and the original Super PAC.
If anything, your own experience here on ZH should teach you to see through propaganda, even if generally you might agree with the particular message. The only real threat to gun rights in the US is the more and more frequent mass murders by the hands of fucked up (primarily white) kids, and the byproducts of a failed drug war.

I’ve got a shiny Beretta FS92 EL LIKE THIS ONE with gold accents.. never shot it but it feels incredible to hold with the slick walnut grips. All of my other FS92’s are for plinking.. The 1911s and .40 SW Glocks are for more serious stuff.

in my experience when you really need a handgun it has to be fast and it's near. so good and small for me, and for all the rest other much bigger weapons are better suited

Glocks I have my friend, 26(wifes carry gun), 27, 22, 20 and my everydayer the 29.
Gen 4 takes care of the problem with the different backstraps. The 19 is the best compromise of size, concealability and accuracy. the 26 is damn accurate and small. Hardened steel barrels can handle hundreds of thousands of rounds. dead simple to work on. Reliable.
Sig, HK, FN, Browning, Beretta, S&W M&P - all great choices for personal protection.

Ruger's semi auto pistols are not bad either. They are like old pickups. A bit heavy, solid, and reliable as hell. I actually had one, lost all my guns in a boating accident. It was as accurate as any Glock.

Some agencies are going with the smith 40 because it has the patent on that magazine safety where if you pull the mag you can't fire the gun (more often than not a round has been chambered) and with the average level of intelligence at the typical agency that feature is critical.
I think some of homeland security carry M&Ps. Other agencies may carry them as well. It's become a pretty popular platform. As far as I know, FBI, and others mostly carry glocks, and SIGs, as do most local LE.
Gooobermints do not use S&W's.
Nor do nearly all LE.(Unless a major shift has occured, and I do not see it happening).
