While Athens' political parties are recreating a mediocre episode of gossip girl, with accusations of blackmail this, and traitor that, and somehow everyone (not only in Greece but in Europe) has gotten their period at the same time, G-Pap is currently holding his second address to Parliament (view here) in which he is seriously rambling like a deranged lunatic but where he just had the following eerily most anti-prescient statement ever:

There were rumors of a military coup in Greece. So GPap announced a referendum to calm things down, while never wanting to really do it. Then he changed the military leadership to stop a coup. Then announced the referendum was canceled.

He used the threat of democracy to get the opposition party to back the bailout. Otherwise his party would have suffered after the bailout was approved. Some slick fucking politicking if you ask me. Now, both parties are on the hook for the bailout acceptance and it can't be used as a political hot-potato in the next election.

Interesting theory.... There are also rumors that the US knew ahead of time about the call for a referendum. Possibly the info about a coup and advice about a referendum were from the US? If so, however, the referendum didn't exactly calm things down. But it did expose the opposition party leader for who he was-- no different on the issues than G-Pap.

I would like to hear from someone with their ear to the ground regarding the Greek Military leadership. I do believe most solidiers are patriots, and in this case it seems that being dictated to by the Eurozone might no sit well with them. I admit to being largely ignorant in this particular instance though.

There is no way that Greece even if they agree can do what the govt. wants of them. They are in a catch 22, they cut spending and raise taxes and get rid of jobs and when they do that it decreases productivity and less is spent on goods and services. Also they don't even have enough of a population (11 million and change) to be taxed, and if your talking about working populace then it's way less. That VAT tax (value added tax) will just be avoided. This is kabuki theater with groups in Greek govt. trying to show They aren't responsible for the mess. When G-pap wanted that referendum for the people to vote if they wanted the bailout (this isn't gone by a long shot) which shocked France and Germany, it wasn't a political show to bring the other party into his camp agreeing to the bailout by all or nothing. It was truly self serving in order for him to say I went the way the people wanted, nothing more. Why would he do this in the first place and risk a bad market without telling France and Germany first, because he was wanting to say he won't be at fault.
Here's a piece of advice, don't go long this weekend because I have a strange feeling that something real big is coming out.
I hope you are wrong, I fear you are right. Even if you are not right this weekend, you are right, soon. They can keep it up and running longer than you and I think because most people don't get it yet. I suspect the average Greek gets it better than the average "anyone else" right now. All of us are blind, feeling a hideous, deformed, diseased elephant and describing it to each other, each from their perspective. We argue about just what it is.
