And that, ladies and gentlemen, is an idiot market, driven solely by headline scouring algos.
Why, if one really wanted to crash the market, one could just tweet "Bernanke resigns" and the S&P would be down by 50% in the next millisecond...

The CME just lowered margins a few weeks ago. If they turned around and now starting raising them again then that would just expose them even further for the sham that they are.....as if they needed more proof.

Wouldnt they be the ones best placed to absord any hikes and the shorts instead be put under pressure?

It doesn't really matter how much you are up, you want to book it best. Therefore any downside rumours and its sell first ask questions later. IMO, these markets (PMs, equities, commodities) are stuffed with more fast money than they have ever been in recorded history. When things start to turn south it could be epic. Look how fast things fell in 2008 and the markets then had lots of 401k and lifer money, you know the kind that listened to their brokers day after losing day saying "don't panic it'll turn around tomorrow". There are going to be a lot of Phd. theses on "the unintended consequences of ultra loose monetary policy".

Good question. Short Ans. is it depends on who is long and who is short, and which of those group(s) haz access to ZIRP and which doesn't. In the short term it's patently difficult to catch on the wrong side of a margin hike anyone with their very own printing press who can overview everyone else's position, and, if recent events are any indicator, may simply appropriate the assets of the other side of the trade should that be deemed necessary.

Every failure to deliver is a default. They have failed to deliver contracts every month since December 2010.

OK, so this scenario is one I've wondered about for a while. Let's say the COMEX fails to deliver on a gold contract, and outright defaults. The morning after, the following things might happen:
A. Spot Gold goes non-linear to the upside, blows through the nominal high, and keeps going.
B. GLD crashes, as people wake up from the delusion that GLD = access to physical gold
C. GLD skyrockets along with spot gold.
D. Spot Gold also crashes as people flee the entire gold space in a panic
E. None of the above.

If one is interested in having some gold exposure through such an event, how does one play it? Buy physical and ignore GLD? Buy physical and paper hedges with GLD? Long spot gold and short GLD?
