A Declassified Jon Huntsman On China's Terror Of A Gold-Pegged Dollar
While last night's quid-pro-quo from Chinese officials will likely be remembered as the start of escalating trade wars, Wikileaks has uncovered a declassified cable from John Huntsman indicating China's clear understanding of the growing tension and comprehension of the ability of the US to entirely destroy it economically with one swipe of the Presidential pen via a massive devaluation of the USD or repegging to gold.
Evidently, while we may be used to seeing Jon Huntsman spew truisms and political one liners, there was a time when he actually had something interesting to say:
a. "Sino-U.S. 'trade war' is heating up again"
The Shanghai-based Shanghai Media Group (SMG) publication, China Business News (Diyi Caijing)(02/08)(pg A1): "The United States provoked a trade war again by imposing high anti-dumping duties on Chinese-made gift boxes and packaging ribbon. This once again shows that 2010 is off to a difficult start for Sino-U.S. relations. It also reflects that, because of the mid-term elections, Obama is eager to prove to the American voters that the U.S. Administration's China policy is tough so as to restore his declining support rate. Yao Jian, the Ministry of Commerce spokesperson, issued a statement on February 1, saying that following the financial crisis American trade protectionism has risen. China has become the biggest victim of the U.S.'s abusive implementation of trade remedy measures.
But more critically in terms of actions taken perhaps:
b. "The United States no longer sits still; it frequently uses evil tricks to force China to buy U.S. bonds"
The Shanghai-based Shanghai Media Group (SMG) publication, China Business News (Diyi Caijing)(02/08)(pg A7): "This time the quick change of the U.S. policy (toward China) has surprised quite a few people. The U.S. has almost used all deterring means, besides military means, against China. China must be clear on discovering what the U.S. goals are behind its tough stances against China. In fact, a fierce competition between the currencies of big countries has just started. A crucial move for the U.S. is to shift its crisis to other countries - by coercing China to buy U.S. treasury bonds with foreign exchange reserves and doing everything possible to prevent China's foreign reserve from buying gold.
The nature of such behavior is a rogue lawyer's behavior of 'ripping off both sides': taking advantage of cross-strait divergences, blackmailing the Taiwan people's wealth by selling arms to Taiwan, and meanwhile coercing China to buy U.S. treasury bonds with foreign exchange reserves and extorting wealth from the mainland's people. If we [China] use all of our foreign exchange reserves to buy U.S. Treasury bonds, then when someday the U.S. Federal Reserve suddenly announces that the original ten old U.S. dollars are now worth only one new U.S. dollar, and the new U.S. dollar is pegged to the gold - we will be dumbfounded.
Today when the United States is determined to beggar thy neighbor, shifting its crisis to China, the Chinese must be very clear what the key to victory is. It is by no means to use new foreign exchange reserves to buy U.S. Treasury bonds. The issues of Taiwan, Tibet, Xinjiang, trade and so on are all false tricks, while forcing China to buy U.S. bonds is the U.S.'s real intention."
And since this memo, Gold has risen 105% and the USD (measured by DXY) is unchanged - that is all.

Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha!
The Chinese know exactly under which walnut the pea is hidden.
Unfortunately for us.
They bear some responsibility by pegging their exchange rate. If the rate floats their currency will strengthen but their mercantilist export economy will suffer. They have put themselves in a cage. We can export our inflation to them and print enough to buy all their real goods with fake money.
Their best play is to buy real stuff with our dollars...while they can.
That should read:
Ha. I also like the line:
Completely OT (my on topic remarks are down a ways, as posted much earlier:
It appears that Berlusconi called Merkel a fat ass dyke, and he has also been recorded as stating that Italy (yes, the nation that he is PM of) is a "shit hole" that "makes him physically ill and want to puke," and that he "can not wait to retire."
I am sure this will do wonders for German-Italian relations and the affections of Italians towards Berlusconi.
Silvio Berlusconi's vulgar Angela Merkel insult caught on wiretap
Silvio Berlusconi Hates ItalyIncredibly, Silvio Berlusconi is a prime minister who detests his own country. Well that’s the impression one gets from the transcript of a telephone conversation between Silvio Berlusconi and Valter Lavitola, a newspaper editor.
The full story has been covered by John Hooper writing for the Guardian: Berlusconi vows to leave ‘sh**ty’ Italy in conversation recorded by police (the article contains strong language – used by Italy’s prime minister) in connection with extortion investigations.
Not only does Italy’s prime minister say he despises his country, he also states he wants to leave. Maybe he’s planning to fly off to his villa in Antiqua...

Could it get any worse ... entertaining ... sad - not sure what terms are appropriate - maybe all three.
Most interestingly of all:
No doubt, America’s divide-and-conquer tactics have been highly successful, and highly advantageous to America. The real question, of course, is how long will it be ’til both the Chinese and Taiwanese governments tire of sending their productive capital to America (either for treasuries, or weapons) so that Americans can have a free lunch? A dollar devaluation? War on the Korean peninsula? QE3? QE4? QE Gold?
http://azizonomics.com/2011/09/15/huntsman-cable/
He and Obama have something in common.
i'm guessing it's not a distaste for fat assed women.
Heck, he's a former lounge singer on Cruise Ships. What did we expect. And this is the guy that brought stability to the Italian Ship of State?
Italy is a joke. They've been living large under the shadow of that religious horrorshow in their midst.
A most Catholic nation for sure. A christian nation? Hardly.
ORI
Tipping Points and Shape Shifting
A most stupidly A-hole for sure. A Christian? Hardly
Can my picture be on the New US Dollar?
They are buying Europe, so that they don't have to buy the US. Is that not clear?
spot on, all i could think when i read this was "hi pot, its kettle calling"...
end of the day, the US can only export boeings, caterpillars or green/pink paper sheet.
The Chinese need someone to buy walmart crap that lasts 2 days so they can make millions of them.
It's ironic how symbiotic both are, yet both are parasitic at the same time.
If China stops buying US treasuries, their yuan will rise, and exports will decrease.
However, if the Chinese are smart, they will use the ever inflated money supply of US dollars to buy hard US assets. Not just US $ denominated assets, but US companies and IP. One could imagine China could just about buy every company on the NASDAQ
MOne could imagine China could just about buy every company on the NASDAQ
; ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
Made me laugh. One could also imagine what the US could do if this ever happened.
Suddenly, the responsibility by shareholders to endure the losses and refinance their companies with their own dimes would certainly no longer appear that much an abstraction never to be concretized.
Chinese are not dumbed. The US is the world breaker of treaties. The US has no words. Trading with the US is the start of all your woes. The US citizens nature is eternal, and it is of their eternal nature to rob.
Don't forget the Homestead Act (of 1862)
I'm sure you're the first person who ever came up with such a brilliant plan.
There can't be any obstacles to them stupid Chinese buying US assets.
Good call.
bd
The assets the Chinese would want to buy, our Government probably wouldn't let them purchase.
Technology or companies with proprietary assets and patents would be tied up in red tape for years. If China wanted Motel 6 or Quiznos, they'd get 'em in a minute.
And all the land in North Dakota ( no mineral rights, of course) they wanted. But real estate? I'm sure they remember the tale of Rockefeller Center and the yen.
This is pretty late, so I doubt many folks'll notice, but I'd point out two things:
1) The Chinese also have lawyers.
2) The Chinese have achieved "de facto" ownership of real assets in numerous countries through Mafia-style "credit extension vs. collateral" tactics. If a contract is disputed, they will continue exploiting the resource while the whole thing is worked out in the court system.
This is not to imply they're the Mafia, or evil, or doing anything wrong. This is only to state clearly that if you're SURE their business deals present no ownership threat, you are more likely wrong than right.
It's just business, cosa nostra.
What the 'insanity defense' is to a charge of murder, the 'national security' defense is to our enemies and lesser allies buying any American assets that we don't think they deserve to own.
Of course, 'national security' is a much more successful defense than 'insanity.'
"It's ironic how symbiotic both are, yet both are parasitic at the same time."
The US is the Yin to China's Yuan!
Hahaha, I crack myself up sometimes... it's sad really.
Yeah, but isn't that playing into the Fed/Admin's plans? By buying the NASDAQ, it would prop up the stock market, which seems to be the goal of the central bank, to stave off the inevitable crash. TPTB would sell their stakes to China gladly, watch the whole thing meltdown, then pick it back up for a fraction of what they sold it for. Or to take their firms "private" to escape increased govt scrutiny (which no doubt follows a crash). That's how they play the game.
I believe that half of East Africa is taking mandarin lessons as we speak, the better to beg indulgences from ones master. Come to think of it I will pick up a tape of chinese curses as I was never good at begging for indulgence, forgiveness yes..
Seriously they are buying up mines and ag land in E. Africa hand over fist..
Elsewhere too. The Chinese play for the long term. They view the past few hundred years as an abberation - where the barbarians somehow overtook their civilized country. Communism worked well enough to throw off the corrupt leaders they had but when it failed to provide for their populace they changed over to their current 'hybrid'.
Instead of having to borrow billions to industrialize, they played it brillianly, trading cheap labor for factories. The west handed China an industrial base on a silver platter. All that production is now part of China's GNP - and the facilities are in China - no matter who owns them. Tech sharing agreements have hastened China's progress - as has all the Chinese educated and trained abroad who have returned. China put its surplus rural population to work and then took all the $US earned making crap for us and bought long term energy contracts, mining companies and farmland - hard assets. They did not make the noistake teh Japanese did in buying US office buildings and golf courses - only to sell them back at a loss.
China has a long memory andstill resents the Opium forced on it to offset the balance of trade deficit england had - from buying tea, silk and porcelain. But realizing they cannot compete militarily with the US technology edge they are playing a different game. They have bought friends and influence without having military bases everywhere. They have economic power over many - inclluding the US. We may think the Chinese are in a bind because we owe them so much but where is the US withjoug all that they now manufacture for us?
And whild China may be building 'ghost cities' - they ARE producing 'hard assets' _ their population is gaining its own purchasing power and is becoming the market chased by the rest of the world. Meanwhile, the US is literally falling apart. At some point - not too far off, the Chinese will ask themselves - 'Why do Americans havbe so much when we work so hard?' - When China cuts off our credit the US will be in for a rude awakening. And if it turns out that the US doesn't own all that gold they supposedly have....well then China has little to fear.
I once thought WWII would arise from China grabbing the raw materials found in sparsely populated Eastern Russia - but there will be no war. China has already 'won' with greatly expanded economic influence. They've achieved economic goals without war. Hell, Australia is an economic colony of China - without them who would be buying the production from their mines?
The capitalist conmen may have pulled a few fas ones on China but they learn fast from their mistakes. Do NOT undersetimate them. American hubris on the other hand cannot be underestimated.
"'100 years of humiliation'
In Chinese schools, students learn about "100 years of humiliation" by Western powers, from the virtual takeover of Chinese trade by European countries and the U.S. in the 1800s to Japan's brutal invasion of the country before and during the Second World War.
The late Chinese Communist Party Leader Mao Zedong led China from 1949 to his death in 1976. (Associated Press)For Canadians, this is ancient history, but Chinese civilization is thousands of years old, and recent centuries seem like yesterday, says Jan Wong, a former Beijing correspondent for the Globe and Mail.
"In Canada, our history is so short," Wong says. "We've never been really invaded or occupied. We don't know what it's like to lose control of our borders. We just don't get it."
After the Communist takeover in Beijing in 1949, the West recognized Taiwan's government as the legitimate representative of China. That, combined with Mao Zedong's zealous drive to mould a revolutionary society out of centuries of feudalism, helped isolate Asia's largest country for generations.
Those memories still smoulder in China and help explain why Western concerns about Tibet, human rights and even pollution in Beijing often raise hackles.
Pro-Tibet protests during the Olympic torch relay to Beijing were to many Chinese yet more foreign interference in their country's internal affairs, just like the Opium Wars of the mid-19th century."

They have put themselves in a cage
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No. They have been living in a cage, trying to make the most of it. Big difference.
They did make the US world order, they had to live in it.
Fact is that in order to prevent the FRN Ponzi from going belly up, the US have coerced commodities exporters to use the USD. They cant go out without facing US military.
This is the cage set by the US for the rest of the world.
China did not put themselves into a cage. They failed at stopping the US from putting them in a cage.
But the US citizens eternal nature is one of a bully. US citizens therefore can not perceive when they initiated an action. A bully is always a victim, the bully is victim of the others being weak, forcing the bully to aggress them.
Such is the US world order.
"US citizens eternal nature" is neither bully or nor robber.
Those who have usurped power in the US, the criminal fukks who have neither grace or enlightenment, are worse than bullies and robbers. They are genocidal sociopaths.
Agree with goldfish,
The vast citizenry are all about going about life and getting by the best they can. The ones at the top are another class all themselves. It's almost a country within a country.
Um, no. We choose to be 'free trade'. We choose to give them that advantage.
Them pegging isn't the issue. It's the free trade that causes the imbalance. ALL currencies should be pegged like bretton woods.
...we do it to ourselves.
Glass-Steagall
Their best play (and ours) is to cash in their treasuries for raw materials, machinery, expertise from the U.S. over the next few decades per an agreement. They get something for their treasuries, to build up their west, so their citizens don't overthrow them, and no one gets into a shooting war.
They don't want to be screwed. We don't need them to be screwed. It isn't the 'money', it's the stuff 'money' buys they want to maintain. Make the deal, and move on. Any escalation is completely unnecessary, and is only a game.
We're playing a bullshit monetarist game, the whole world is, against china. Thanks London! Thanks Washington! Thanks Wall Street!
I'm sure this will end nicely!
Buy all their real goods with fake money?
Real goods?
Real?
From China?
They once said the same of Japan. There's a learning curve.
But China has managed to industrialize using the West to GIVE it factories in exchange for cheap labor. Their labor force is LEARNING fast - and their citizens becoming more and more educated. The ethnic Chinese diaspora is the trading class in much of Asia. The old 'Nationalist/Taiwanese vs mainland" meme is fading - the new generations don't care. They are making money. The old Nationalists were corrupt and resented by the native Taiwanese - the old Communists made a mess with too much ideology and have become Capitalists. China is less and less the 'low cost' labor producer as it gains experience and expertise. Chinese workers are earning more - and shifting unskilled labor operations to even cheaper markets - so hey can concentrate on higher value production. Where are most electronics made now? And with tech sharing agreements, China is moving fast when it comes to things like aircraft production - really high end products. You can't build a car plant in China without sharing alternative power technology. And while China is a polluted mess, who's the leader in solar? China made 'compromioses' to deal with a huge population with growing expectations but they plan for the LONG TERM. The US can't see past the next quarter and is so busy gaming numbers so execs can collect bonuses that most 'progress' is a sham.
Look at all CHina has built - and all it has bought - energy contracts, mining concerns, farmland all over Africa - with the 'fake' money they EARNED making crap for the US - who bought on CREDIT. What does the US have for all it has spent? Our industrial base has been sent overseas. Our infrastructure is 50 years old - or more - and crumbling. Our education system is a joke. And our leaders are focused on illusion while denying reality - with the 'no global warming', 'no evolution', 'no regulation - let business loot and pillage' Republicans being worse than the 'spend without thinking' Dems. Our political leadership is owned by corporations focused on the short term - with fudged accouting producing 'profits' - not real production and accomplishment.
No illusions - China's leaders are crony capitalists too, BUT they have a longer term focus as well. They are scared shitless of millions of people who want a better life - an educated youth who WILL stand up to government. Remember Tiananmen Square?
US politicians have only to deal with readily manipulated couch potatos. The US is Rome at the end - a collapsing Empire unaware of its impending doopm.
Japan had never been China, and China can't never be Japan. The profound culture difference between China and Japan says China will highly likely stay in a shitty place in the future. The number one trait of the glorified Chinese culture is about how to deceive and cheat anyone that is not in their immediate family circle for some material and financial gains. The Japanese understood China is the one of the biggest diseases the world faces.
Who would junk Freedomguy for that? It's true, China benefited immensely from the former UNSUSTAINABLE system. Now that they have made themselves dependent upon that unsustainable system, and it is reaching the end of its lifespan, all I hear is them complaining.
Too darn bad, you don't get your "Century of China," your jobs are NEVER coming back because the West is aging and needs those jobs themselves, they are not going to buy your cheap crap anymore, and you are never going to get laid because you let your centralized government limit you to one kid and then aborted all the girls.
The problem with unsustainable economies is the same problem with stray cats. If you feed them, they propagate and become dependent upon you. When you can no longer feed them, there is a die off. China can bitch and whine about the West, but they are the one's who hitched their future to an unsustainable system, and then played it for all it was worth. Even if we had used sound fiscal and monetary policy, the aging of the West made the collapse of the current system inevitable, so China can STFU and look in the mirror for the cheif cause of their current inescapable predicament.
So solly Charlie
setting an FRN to gold peg does not change the value of the FRN, it arbitrarily sets a FRN price for gold. of course, the central planners can always change the peg, too.
what depreciates the value of the FRN is the Fed expanding the currency to oblivion or people simply not having confidence in it. both of those are seemingly unavoidable realities at this point, with or without a gold standard. the only thing that can save the global fiat system is allowing the great deflation to occur & revolving the force of government to a sustainable scope.
>but their mercantilist export economy will suffer.
Their 1.4 billion people who have just become richer as their currency strengthens will be able to compete with our 300 million people that are no longer buying their exports.
That is partially true. The flip side is that their products are priced for export markets. A large part of their populace is still not prosperous enough to buy much of their own production. As they prosper and move up they will find their neighbors becoming competitive on costs. They may also be producing things fornwhichntheir is little demand in China.
However, most of the world lives in relative poverty to the West. So as they open up their potential they have large internal demands for goods and services.
Ands whose merchandise is on the shelves at Walmart?
How does that that work? Fake dollars to China and real dollars in your wallet?
Just wait until they sell those treasuries and buy gold, or better yet, say " pay us in gold".
If they say, 'pay us in gold', we'll just ask they lend us the gold to pay them with.
But it is a Tungsten pea.
Mbwuhahahahahahaaaa!
why????
once again!
at least 1,200%+++ leverage (before Panda Bonds were floated) on every Renminbi.. before the ink dries.
SO WHAT DOES THE U.S. GAIN??? NOTHING!!!
What does China Gain?? A stabilized Currency.. along with our Manufacturing Base of 11 MILLION JOBS!!(and the tax base that left with it $7 to $14 Trillion over the last decade {we are in year 11} has been {for a few lobby dollars to the boys on the "Hill"} GIVEN AWAY!)
The U.S. Dollar has 120%+++ Leverage placed against it..
We are Stabilizing China.. Nothing More and Nothing Less..
WAKE UP!! it is OLD NEWS!!
Good Take.
OT, where is the Project Mayhem dude, I miss the Pandemic updates.
http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/09/13/us-tuberculosis-europe-idUSTRE78C7VD20110913
Multidrug-resistant and extensively drug-resistant forms of tuberculosis (TB) are spreading at an alarming rate in Europe and will kill thousands unless health authorities halt the pandemic, the World Health Organization(WHO) said on Wednesday.
I'm not worried I don't eat tubers. So no tuberculosis for me.
You only need to lick them.
Anyone know what happened to Project Mayhem and Cheeky Bastard?
Saw Cheeky last week. Mayhem has been AWOL since I showed up. What about Mere? Is he alright???
The best posts get junked. But this is old news ;)
yet another demonstration: democracy is a lost cause. last refuge of the coward.
people, need i pull out plato's cave?
the world has not fundamentally changed (people still live in it).
don't be a troglydite; quit staring at shadows on the wall and tossin milquetose manure at each other -- SPEAK cowards! break your chains, come out of the cave, the LIGHT will reveal your folly...but it'll really sting those cataracts and dilated pupils!
funny thing is, this nation, poisoned and permeated with some ubiquitious and sinister pretense of its own infallibility, and further indoctrinated into the cult of 'demon-ocracy' from the time they could pronounce it; yes, in this nation, i cannot get ONE single person to defend the virtues of democracy.
sure, we're all told that the merits are self-evident. but, janus sees corruption, cravenes, cleptocrats, poverty, a menacing and monolythic form of slavery (the job and the mortgage); noble institutions like law, medicine and education have been possessed by the foulest devils of our demon-ocracy. democracy is a goddam ruse -- it's a way to convince the powerless that they do, after all, have some power.
REALLY? DO YOU? EXPLAIN WHAT THIS POWER ENTAILS?
YOUR GODDAM CHILDREN CAN BE TAKEN FROM YOU IF THEY FIND A JOINT IN YOUR CAR!!!!!! (i met just such a man after my arrest for daring to write an unorthodox paper)
SO, I DARE ANY OF YOU VOTERS -- COME TO JANUS!!! I'll TEACH YOU A THING OR TWO ABOUT THE WICKEDNESS AND PERVERSITY OF THIS ONE RING; THE RING TO BIND THEM ALL!!! YOUR BELOVED DEMOCRACY; MAY IT NEVER CURSE THE EARTH AGAIN IN ITS CURRENT ITERATION.
AS ALWAYS, JANUS TAKES ALL COMERS.
don't bring that weak ass eigth grade civics bull shit; lest i make you eat it!
Tell em that God's gonna cut em DOWN!!!

janus
I agree. You have a way of saying it don't you.
Your pic reminds me that 1% of the population are hermaphrodites. What happens to the ones in America? I wonder why 51% are women.....oh wait, no I don''t.
In India hermaphrodites are celebrated, and they were in Tribal cultures, but now we cut there balls off. You want to talk about living in the shadows? Crazy.
since we're all annnonymous around here, and i don't have to trifle with this bullshit false modesty i'm required to cloak myself in day after fuckin day after fucking day.
anyway, yeah, i feel like i have some kind of gift or something -- felt it from a VERY young age; and have ALWAYS been despised by teachers (but i'm on my way to revenge -- through the courts for now; but i'll take money while i wait on helter skelter to arrive).
learning about these financial markets has taught me that money is a POWERFUL weapon...and you can build it quickly if your nimble and clever. so, my working class hero, ready to change the world?
but, absolutely, i want as much multifarious/multitudinous/multifaceted/hydra-sprectrumed/radiance a blazin derivations of the human being as POSSIBLE. the variation of humanity is the miracle that, to me, PROVES the existence of God Almighty.
and it is not 'we' who are evil. it is those who seek to manipulate those differences unto schism, unto tension, unto malice, unto MURDER! we, the human race, have a common enemy. and you will know them by their fruits: THEY SEEK TO HOMOGENIZE US. they want uniformity...janus demands the free flow of God's Bounty in ALL its fullness.
These devils aren't just murderers in the literal sense; they are also genocidal maniacs, in that they seek to destroy EVERYTHING that deviates beyond the bell-curve's ideal mean.
May they rot in hell and receive the torments of the damned; may their dark d-minor chorus wail 'abyssus abyssum invocat'...singing each to each, and may the echo haunt them for all of eternity!
so, actually, i haven't a thing against pansy queers -- marcel proust is, perhaps, my favorite author of all time (depends on when you ask me); and the pansy queers will have a role, but it won't be front line combat.
here's to you mr. Lennon,

J I could not be more different on how I arrived at the same conclusion as you. No one could explain it. I will say intervention from outside is the best explanation.
My Xer behavior at this age is nothing consistent with the powers that acted on us Xers at youth and early workers. My Xer friends have not woken up but I have. Lots of contrarian behavior ESP the teachers part. Who determined that teachers are more equipped than me to teach my kids? Who determined that poking my baby girl at 24 hours for HepB vaccine was good practice? Who determined that drinking fucking cooked breast milk from a mature animal was good for human health? Who determined that making money on products that taste good but harm you, then making money on products that portend to heal you and don't, the making money financing it all,was good practice? Who determined that for 30 years we should open up trade with Chinese people in China then screw with them on the basis o the currency later? This is all designed by an enemy, not just some passive force at work. They not only want to homogenize us they want to homogenize explanations of what is happening.
Only here at ZH do I learn that the Start of the decline of the us was instigated with willing us leaders to emaciate the manufacturing power starting in the late '60s an turned a corner in 1980. No one told us we would be chasing higher salaries than our moms (since dads, the white ones too) were encouraged to seek party pants across town. Yet those dollars would be worth 1/3 of theirs. I bought a house with a 10th the luxuries of my moms and equal in price in 2004. Thanks to all those powers that helped build my grave. Well, the play right now is to see whether I Jump in or fight my way out before the dirt hits my face.
Mr. Ditka (that's a big complement from janus),
i cannot thank you enough. i'm man enough to admit that i was profoundly moved by your words; and the sentiment...brother, it's as if i could hear the tenor in your voice as i read those words. i truly do feel ya.
i can't do your words justice; so i'll let song do it for me (it's not a cop-out; music can do what words alone simply cannot)
besides, as naploeon once said, "music is the voice that tells us the human race is greater than it knows."
dedication to Chicago Bear:

this song means an AWFUL lot to janus, Chicago Bear...hope you enjoy.
also, be patient with your quarterback. he's a good guy; but, like janus, misunderstood.
i personally think chicago has the best qb in the league (even though he's a Vandy grad)
Eat healthy and stay fit,
janus
Nicely put. I think I like you. :)
the feeling is mutual.
were you ever stationed at Bragg between the years 98 and 03?
janus spent him heaps o time at Pope -- no hope pope -- and did lots of 'work' with you boys and a few other's from that mega-base.
hope you're keeping fit; you will be needed.
pvt. first class in the army of the new age (actually, they'll be no 'rank' in our army),
janus
Very sorry Janus, the ranger in my alias is not a military reference. I am fit though I was never in the military, any branch. Almost joined, but challenge authority too much. They would have crucified me. I still like your style. :)
I'd say JW has a good message, but honestly, his posts are mostly incoherent jibber-jabber.
MAYBE he gets the junks because he can't string together 3 coherent thoughts, EVEN THOUGH he's 100% correct.
For whatever it matters, I don't junk him. He's obviously too high to care about such things anyway.
It's FL. Fuckin' A. Me encanto Miami, putas.
If you refuse to let yourself be entertained.. that is not my fault. sarc/ should not be needed in ALL! things.
Miami has a wonderful night life but I am in Palm Beach.
I havent had a drink or drug in?? how many years? is it a decade?
If you cant keep up with my thoughts maybe it is becuase YOU! are not in the BIZ.. as they would say! LOL fuck them any way! wait was that to, too much in 1, 2, 3, 4 sentences?
if you said in Spanish Aztlan Bitchez!! I agree, I see or is it "C"?
Kethcup, Tomato.
my position is this:
i like JW and rodent and all other fighters because, well, they fight.
i don't have to agree with a man (or woman...please, when janus says 'man' he means anthropos -- the greek gender nuetral term -- that' the last explanation on that score) on all things, nor, for that matter, on ANY thing. i just want to see some original thought. no matter how artfully it's articulated. i'm an artist in that regard; so what? do you have any idea how much i envy musicians? it makes me sick.
but, i nevertheless offer my opinions on music when i am so moved; and i care not whether my thoughts are phrased in such a way that musicians will 'get' what i'm saying.
i care for what lies deep in the heart of a man; and if it's a fighting spirit -- i say it's something of value.
cowards can go fuck themselves for all i care. cowards will soon receive their LONG overdue reward.
HIDE YOU YELLOW BASTARDS!
Death is nothing; but to live everyday defeated and inglorious is to die daily!

death to all treasonous cowards!

Agreed!
I hope we don't go to war with China. I like PF Changs.
PF is Paul Fleming, a pale-face American restaurantuer.
All chicken is from breast, not leg. They don't dice entrees in kitchen, & serve all sauces on the side, so you know it's not cat.
Nice place.
You can bet your bottom dollar(USD) that China is buying as much gold as they can in exchange
for those U.S. dollars. And the trip is that the U.S. is doing everything it can to keep the price of
gold down so as not to cause panic in the markets. The U.S. is playing into China's hand by
keeping gold at bargain prices.
Plus, didn't China ban the export of their own gold? Wonder how Gaddafi paid for the $500 million in Chinese weapons he recently bought? Wonder when the boys down in Bentonville will have to start paying for Chinese made crap in the barbaric relic?
Yes, they buy all their domestic production. It is estimated at 300 tons per year. If I were them, I would buy mines and factories all over the world. Buy real stuff before the inflation and or default arrives. And it will arrive.
They have been buying and investing quite heavily throughout the world. The African continent's biggest foreign investor has been China for the last 5 years. Its pretty clear they're looking at acquiring rights and resources with their excess dollars now with the intention to keep exploiting for years to come.
The one thing that I don't understand is how China intends to force their claims on such resources. Their conventional military is massive, but it just doesn't have the mobility required to protect distant claims. (Or so we think. They probably have a hell of a lot of top secret stuff to take leaps beyond the US military in the next two decades.)
Everyone is running around and spouting off about how brilliant China is (maybe it's because of our incompetent leaders in Europe & the U.S.), while in reality, China is acting the role of world's biggest imbecile.
Africa, you say?
Yes, China is aggressively stalking the 7% to 9% of oil that is in Africa, with who knows what kinds of odds they have of landing control of whatever portion of that 7% to 9%, while the U.S. has just built a major triangle of bases in a region that produces 53% of the total global output of oil.
I'm not talking morality here, but realpolitik (or real-oilism).
The remarks about how brilliantly China is playing the global chess match are really wearing thin.
Also, the source of this article is The Shanghai-based Shanghai Media Group?
Really?
Gee, I wonder how incredibly trustworthy and what a truly non-government mouthpiece kind of publication this is. /sarc
Totally disagree. And I'm talking realpolitik too. China has been waiting and watching and now they are pouncing - albeit softly like a kitten - but kittens have claws and at some point they will come out.
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/international-news/chinas-wen-sets-preconditions-to-help-eu/article2165291/
Edit: And yes some think this will end in war - I hope not.
WW3 is one way to thin the herd, a man made pandemic is another. I am sure TPTB are coming up with some sick plan to reduce the labor pool (and entitlement recipients).
China has financial control over their area. We have military control over ours. When the US goes into a financial crisis, our ability to project military force will disappear practically overnight. China can move in and buy out the successors to the dictators we have propped up for decades after we are forced to leave.
The truth is that China has real wealth in the form of a manufacturing base. They can have as much malinvestment as they want--they will just have a short recession or depression when the US collapses as they retool for domestic and non-western consumption. At that point, manufactured goods will be at a premium, and they will be able to buy anything they like.
That's purely THE bullshit groupthink. Once again, China is THE giant Paper Tiger because the CCP's ruling legitimacy is entirely based on the CCP's ability of providing 25+ million more meaningful jobs a year to accommodate young people straight out of school each year. To achieve that goal, the CCP needs to build self-retractable covers for all oceans of the world, AND 1 million various escalators and elevators to the Moon, if their export markets are no longer meaningful. Because providing jobs by relying on China's internal bullshit personal consumption is nothing but an illusion. The reality is that the portion of China's Personal Consumption to its GDP actually has been declining for the past 30+ years.
Don't forget that China has its very own Space Station while we have have a time share in one.
The Russians, I'm sure, are teaching them how to drive it, and where to put the microwave nuke and the real nukes.
And how do you think we're going to sneak our nukes up on the International Space Station with Russia watching?
With the caveat that the greatest asset the DoD has had in the past 30+ years is the ... petro-dollar. By pegging the dollar to oil (a commodity every nation needs), it underpins the gross disproportion of defense spending. That is to say the rest of the world paid for the US Military courtesy of their oil purchases. Just research how much the US spends vs 2nd in line, all on the backs of everyone else.
The soviets couldn't keep up with it in the 80s and imploded. China, if they face such disparity in currency purchasing power, will also implode. No one can win in a rigged casino; the US is the house in this metaphor.
The most important thing to understand is when the rules change on how money works which is underway right now. All indicators point to gold ... of which the US has 8k tons ... to China's 1k ton? The US has more gold than any other single nation and only collectively can the entire EU match the US holdings. Throw in all the private bank holdings in the US and its very clear who owns the money supply post fiat collapse. In light of this, the US is spending on the credit card knowing it is never going to repay ... and the BK is already printed and ready to sign.
Hell of a shit show!
Regards,
Cooter
EDIT: grammar and brain farts (too much Shiner tonight!)
Agreed, yet, make gold a monetary standard ans settlle international trade in gold and watch economy driven by imported oil being sucked of all this gold in a matter of years. Gold in a vault is the last resort, fiat USD together with military projection gives the US an enormous advantage, jump off fiat and learn to live within your means, forget about crazy military spending also. Gold standard ~ abandon the Empire.
When it said China fears we could devalue our currency then peg it told gold, I almost fell out of my chair laughing. The may peg the new dollar, but the original will eventually fail. It's been devalued too far to be pegged now.
Yep, gold and oil can't flow in the same direction.
I am going out on a limb a bit here, but read up on CO2 flooding and match that up with the desire of all governments to regulate CO2 which ultimately means CO2 sequestering ... you know, to save us all. :-)
Conspiracy aside, I think the world is going to be a scary place in the post fiat collapse. When nations stop trading, their leaders will either (1) pony up and accept responsibility, or (2) point the finger across a border.
Going to get ugly!
Regards,
Cooter
In essence, they are trusting the honesty of the system and the honoring of contracts. Short of war, they should expect that. That's one of their two huge disadvantages to the US. They cannot project power very well...yet.
Their other disadvantage is we have the largest gold reserves in the world by a mile. In a gold standard world they get creamed.
Now, we can argue if the gold is really there but I think it is one reason we don't want to publish what we have. It's like telling how many warheads one owns.
they are trusting the honesty of the system
Or maybe that's what they want people to think. I'd think the idea of the "bluff" has occurred in a 3000 year old culture that loves gambling.
But maybe I'm just a racist, and the Chinese are in possession of absolutely no guile whatsoever.
Yeah.
I doubt you're really a racist. You're just false flagging.
With a billion three the Chinese need no guile, they just need a lot more condoms.
You're probably right that they want people to think that they trust the honesty of the system. But why should they? You know all about the Opium wars and the Boxer Rebellion. You think that disappeared with The Fairy's Kiss in 1972?
They have been shat upon by the best of the First World Nations and as far as I'm concerned they can horse around with the yuan all they want to. And if they eat the Sudan, remember the terms of the Treaty of Peking.
They have 700,000+ workers just in the Sudan alone. Young fit Chinese men. I wonder what would happen if a few container ships of rifles and light infantry equipment were to show up there? I'd say they'd have an a large army on the African continent in short order.
Who knows how many men are in the other African nations 'working' their possessions?
ASBM - Anti Ship Ballistic Missile + recon satellites and 45 minutes.
When the clash of arms comes (and it will) it's going to be a VERY bloody opening volleys.
Hard to farm, pump oil, mine, etc. when you're looking over your shoulder.
SilverRhino,
Africa (I'm going to exclude Libya, Egypt & Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia for purposes of this analysis, as these nations aren't really thought of as 'African' from a geopolitical standpoint in common parlance) has some large stands of old hardwood tree forests, and Nigeria has significant deposits of light, sweet crude, and that's about where the story ends.
Regarding Nigeria, it's already been staked by western oil companies. China is not going to have much success disrupting the strong bonds of graft that has seen Nigeria's government sell its citizenry out due to massive bribes by Royal Dutch Shell and others.
So let China wander around Africa, and buy up some logging rights, with its pud in its hand, or fight a war with 700,000 of its citizens, awaiting on a shipment of rifles, or whatever....
The U.S. has just built permanent, massive bases of operation in Iraq, Afghanistan, Turkey, Egypt (they've been there a while), Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Dubai and quite a few former Soviet satellite states.
On the Asian Front, the U.S., Japan & South Korea are stronger than ever in alliance as a bulwark against China's desire to expand her claims, and the Chinese can't even manage to finesse a truly sustainable, reliable Russian alliance, during an historical episode that should have made doing so easy as pie (Putin is not a fan, and Wen Jibao reciprocates the hate).
I just want to emphasize that I'm not a fan of much U.S. policy, on a variety of grounds, but I also am a realist, and can't see how China is in any way making intelligent strategic moves, or building important alliances that could in any way significantly pose a challenge to U.S. interests (I'm not naive enough to quit the analysis, though, and would never dismiss their aspirations or underestimate their abilities, either).
And all those US military bases you mention were paid for largely by China (buying US Treasuries). And the US military bases in Eastern Europe/Central Asia...on the doorstep of China...were also financed by China. I'm not saying the US has them by the balls, just that China won't be yelling "Checkmate!" any time soon. The US downfall will probably look more like the downfall of the USSR...the core will rot out and buzzards (in this case, Asian ones) will swarm in to peck at various parts of the carcass (like Western capitalists did in Eastern Europe). Sara Palin might really be able to see Russia from her house someday.
You mean Tina Fey, don't you?

(Even the nonaligned owe it to themselves to watch this video about the intelligence of the American voter.)
Nailed it.
No.
The one thing that I don't understand is how China intends to force their claims on such resources.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yep, China is showing by the example the inanity of the stuff called free trade.
The US by implanting through force US military bases around the world have dispossessed locals from their claims on their ancestral resources.
Free will and mutual benefit vs coercion and extortion.
That is why the US propaganda about peace and removing the bases from all around the world is cheap.
The US world order is one of war, not of peace. The US are a military empire whose currency is backed by their military hegemony on the world. Once the coercion force is removed, their extortion scheme will sink.
Whatever the Chinese do, one has to admit that they are a force of freedom in this US world order.
Syriana was an okay movie, but the general plot regarding how the U.S. in concert with multinational oil companies ensured the line of succession regarding the political power structure of Syriana's government was spot on in terms of art/film reflecting reality.
So, to be perfectly fair, the political leaders, whether "elected" (cough*bullshit*cough) or successors to some crown, of these countries are as morally culpable if not more so than the U.S. (or any other foreign power).
That's a shameful excuse.
Yes, the US is a corrupt, domineering power, that interferes in foreign politics to its own advantage.
And China differs how, exactly? Myanmar, Tibet, North Korea, Xinjiang... China is nasty and corrupt too, just on a smaller scale.
Good to know that China's media lies to its people just as brazenly as ours does to us.
I wonder if China's terms for EU bond purchases is collateral in the form of gold EU nations hold.
... and the new U.S. dollar is pegged to the gold - we will be dumbfounded.
When the U.S. dollar is pegged to gold, I will be dumbfounded too. The part about debasing the dollar by 10X is not so difficult to imagine.
You can always debase the value of a fiat currency. Always (until the monkeys catch on and grab pitchforks and torches).
i truly believe the US is the most powerful nation state on the face of the planet... and switching the currency from debt backed to gold backed is the least of our problems
.
rather the stupidity of us all to having to vote for exxon policy vs. Ron Paul.. and the gravity of feeling like a stranger to our own destiny

why junk the above post?
for AI to have reached the level of sophistication that it can parse ZH and cobble together an almost reasonable-sounding post, containing snippets about ron paul and gold backed currency, is almost miraculous.
it's true, AI development still has far to go, in terms of being able to formulate a reply that is coherent and relevant to the conversation, but i predict that in time, that, too, will be accomplished.
we should applaud how far AI has come, but perhaps i'm just a glass half full kind of guy.
I agree, that was freaking amazing, but also very creepy.
After reading this I can confirm my theory that wikileaks is under goverment control and Im frankly a little worried this was posted on ZH to give it credence... Can anyone explain how TPTB would ever consider a move like this when there millenial goal has been the exact opposite? Yah lets see here... should we peg the dollar to gold and make it a stable currency or should keep doing what weve always done and take everything from everyone by keeping the currency we can manipulate in miliseconds to screw everyone and anyone when ever we want... seriously... this should not be posted on ZH
Can anyone explain how TPTB would ever consider a move like this when there millenial goal has been the exact opposite?

I think the USD will be pegged to gold at some point-but it wont happen by choice and the decision will be forced by some other major currency blowing up first (JPY/GBP/EUR?) and forcing that country to announce a gold weighting to halt the sell off-which will cause all other non-weighted currencies to be sold in favor of the new gold currency-
I believe if/when it happens-it will all happen very fast and will result in panic gold buying by all central banks which will end up causing a massive short squeeze against the commercials and so we will see central banks and commercial banks trying to outbid each other on the open market--one can still dream-even if it doesn't happen-

The only way a gold standard takes hold is if everybody agrees to go back to it at once. That will never happen because TPTB like their unlimited power to finance wars and vote buying social programs.
Sure. It's called CYA.

New Cold War: Mutually-assured destruction via economic WMDs.
worse than that
in 1925, germany pegged its new dm to gold (indexed it) ,exchanged 1billion old marks to 1 new mark, and outlawed private ownership of gold (except jewelry). thats how they beat inflation, from the worthless 1923 mark.
unfortunately, it made most germans poor and desitute, which lead, in the 30,s to the election of a certain party who made chancellor a maniac who promised to put them back to work.....
this story does not have a happy ending.....
Jim Rickards took too long to write his book! According to the Chinese, the currency war began in 2008 (or before). We've seen a few casuelties already in MENA... I wonder when the general will fall?
I wonder what China's game plan is right now ... acquire as much silver and gold as possible on the quiet? I hope they're not expecting it to be shipped out of NYC, because the USGovt will never allow it to leave the vaults (if their paper claims even exist).
Anyone in NYC area this weekend? Join up in Bowling Green Park on Saturday for the Occupy Wall Street event! https://occupywallst.org/

Fantastic. China truly signals the end of the world, as expedited by the US and Eurozone!
Insanity reigns supreme. Let's determine if we may yet further increase the frequency of HFT!
Godamn sinkhole of the planet.
Off the cuff, but wouldn't the solution for China be to do the same as US? Get more and more countries on the RMB and have others buy into Chinese debt?
Spread your poison on other people so you get a stand off... at least make others think twice before making further moves.
(Auto-assume solution is also to load up on commodities + PM's and spend spend spend USD to buy up companies. etc.)
The approach they've chosen is to take direct control of resources.
The US dresses it up in financial instruments.
China owns almost all of the planet's rare earth metals mines. They shut down three of them in the past month. This will give them fairly substantial leverage against us as those metals are needed for military devices and electronics.
That's good, rising prices == further incentive for foreign production <:O)
Get back into the REE boom/bubble!
REE mines are not rare per se, they just happen to be toxic so many nations don't favor them. China was the first to develop its resources in bulk at a rapid pace and with few environmental controls.
Mines deplete and once so are worthless, so this is a poor strategic move by the Chinese.
If China shuts down productions/exports, prices of REE will go up, this will make other mine sites (with sensible environmental controls) economical, and other supplies will come online.
Might be messy during the transition, but it will happen. REE is not the armageddon folks make it out to be.
Regards,
Cooter
Yes, check out Molycorp. Put in the environmental stuff (monitoring and remediation) and it's off to the races!
The source of these documents has a dubious record of unearthing damning news of official enemies. He has dismissed the diversion of proving internal US 9/11 planning -- now definitively proven with the collation of publically and diplomatically reported 30+ military drills.

I presume the peddler of the new, forged, insider declassified 9/11 documents -- are the same fellas behind whichever funded sincere organization and organized people. The raids of internal corporate records reveals the lack of transcript of written strategic planning.
That's all the actual work an Ambassador does, select poignant sentences from business newspapers in the assigned country. Then they front sincerity and helpfulness as monstrously as the Jewish Zionist wall street, academia, medical, and legal industries require to fend off a billion non-gentiles.

As long as China runs a trade surplus with the US or any other country-they have to buy their Treasuries-
What else can they do with those dollars?
They can buy things like mines or oil companies-but the country that sells to them must also do something with the dollars-so either way US Treasuries will be bought and if trade decreases-so will Treasury buying-
The Chinese Communist Party members are looting their people using fiat and government banking mechanisms; just like Americans and Eurozone members.
The world has no use for 7 billion plus mouths to feed, so while the leaders loot their respective nations, the setup is for world-war. This is crony-capitalism at its finest and the world has been scuttled and looted like the Cornish Scuttlers in Jamaica Inn. The Powers That Be, just like in Hitcock's movie are in it up to their eyeballs. Too bad they will not honorably see to their own demise like Charles Laughton did...

do you consider that maybe they are right?
and that agent smith was right:
"I realized that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with their surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You move to an area, and you multiply, and you multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You are a plague, and we … are the cure."
it's true, the world is not a better place for having 7 billion people in it, about 10% of that, or even 1%, would do just fine.

janus is a god of two faces; he's the god of new beginnings; and he's the month of january's namesake.
there are some other details about janus that are pertinent...but i don't want to spoil the ending for you.
janUS.
If the Fed pegged the dollar or some new currency to gold it would limit the Fed in 3 ways, (a) stop endless currency printing for back-door bailouts of American and foreign banks, (b) stop endless currency printing to keep buying Treasury debt, and (c) stop their ability to loot Americans' wealth via currency debasement.
It would also expose the true value of the US dollar against gold, probably somewhere around $50,000 per ounce in the present currency, and $5,000 per ounce in a new 1 for 10 reverse split currency.
So no, the Fed won't peg the dollar or some new currency to gold. No way.
Also remember a gold peg is meaningless. There's no way to tell how much gold the Fed actually has, and how many other claims are on that gold already.
A gold-redeemable currency would be meaningful. But there's no way that will happen either. If the current US dollar was suddenly made gold-reedemable, the exchange rate would probably be upwards of $200,000 per ounce, because (a) the Fed likely has very little unencumbered gold, and (b) there are trilions more dollars floating around out there than are officially reported when you consider trillions off-balance-sheet bailouts, currency swaps, etc. Those trillions of unreported dollars would suddenly appear ...and the US dollar would collapse overnight ...and the Fed would collapse overnight ...and the American financial system would collapse overnight.
Whether this "leaked communication" is real or not doesn't matter.
What does matter is China getting more and more pissed off watching America's criminal banking cabal looting them and everybody else on the planet.
I believe China's eventual response will less economic and more military. They're just not quite ready yet. They have more preparation to do, and the biggest item on their checklist is firm up that Asian nuclear alliance ...which will scare the shit out of America's military and political (and banking) leaders when it is announced.
Wasn't there a story here about this?
In the Chinese news...
