The Decline And Fall Of Suburbia

Tyler Durden's picture

As Arch Daily notes, for decades the suburbs and the American Dream went hand-in-hand but the age-of-sprawl is ending; people are leaving the suburbs and once again flocking to cities in search of a better way of life. Whether Suburbia can be saved or not, this useful infographic looks at the key factors (from Poverty to Transportation costs to Generation Y's preferences) with a view to reinventing Suburbia as a sustainable alternative to urban life.

Another central planning wet dream. Reinvent the suburbs. All part and parcel of centralism and carbonphobia.  People are too stupid to know how to choose where to live. Well the suburbs around the city I live near are doing just fine and apparently most people would rather live there since houses, businesses, and stores are constructed and sold at a good pace. The suburban schools are superior to the city school system and have far less of the urban school's dysfunction and angst.

No such thing in so. california. You must drive 150 miles to find an area of 1000 yrds. to shoot a rifle.

Generation Y will be fine, they will learn to extract assets from the boomers as they all get alzheimers. Easy pickin's.

Just when you thought it was safe to take a nap, the picasso disappeared and in its place is a portrait of dogs playing poker.

Peak oil is B.S. Peak oil is another Ehlichian meme. Read, for example, Daniel Yergin's new book "The Quest" and see what he says about peak oil. We are discovering, developing and producing hydrocarbons so fast we will soon see the oil price follow the gas price downward. Unconventional gas is only starting production in the US, wait till it is underway all over the world. Every nation wants to develope it's own shale gas. Modern geological surveys have only occured on very small areas of the earth. Gas can be substuted for oil in many transportation configurations. NG can be substiuted for oil as a feestock for manufacturing. We are at the beginning of a hydrocarbon tsunami.

It's not sustainable, the price of a gallon of bottled water is $1.00. Better find a new liquid to pump into the rock, water is life.

As Jim Kunstler would say, Daniel Yergin is, "chief public relations pimp for the oil industry, because he makes it so easy for them by providing all the information they will ever need."

HAHA Fuck Kunstler that hypocrite clown. Bellyaching about the unsustainability of suburbia due to fossil fuels as he jetsets around the world 24/7 in planes and cars to faraway lands. Same shit Al Gore did. I can't stand people who espouse the evils of society all the while living high on the hog with those same plush amenities that society provides from the use of oil. Jim Kunstler needs to ride his fucking bike or take a sailboat to his faraway lands and maybe then I'd take what he has to say seriously. Fuck you Jim!

ROTFLMAO.....  can you cite anyone other than Yergin???

Yergin makes his money as a consultant to the energy markets and TPTB...........  he is a spin mister, with a BA from Yale (education in journalism) and several "honorary doctors degrees" from "lower level" universities.

Shale gas technology has been around for many years, but up until recently it has not been COST EFFECTIVE to use...  and with the glut of NG and prices dropping many people who invested in shale gas are going to be realizing neg returns. (remember from eco 101, increase in cost = demand destruction....)  because...  it is "expensive gas" to produce...  marginal compression....

To substitute NG gas for oil you require (among other things)......  PIPELINES.....  investment into infrastructure....  try finding spare NG transportation on the US systems....  let me know what you find for the cost and availability!

"hydrocarbon tsunami"!!!!  Yeah and unicorns shit skittles!

Can you define "Ehlichian meme."????

The burbs can rot and then burn.  Suburban America is nothing but a generic corporate designed monstrocity of 'excess' of the keynesian wonder decades leading up to the decline of the American empire.

Let it burn.   If you can't cut it in the rural farming areas, and you can't cut it in the cities, then go and waste away in the acultural consumerist wasteland of suburbia.  The rampant vanity and displays of excess of the these nihilistic communities of assholes was enough to make me become an anti-suburbanite during my teenage years.

Suburbia can no longer be sustained.  To hell with your chinese mcmansions  and wastes of everything, pretty much.  Globalism came knocking, and you dumbfucks embraced it.  Now learn to crawl, you pigs.

Your incessant preening and posturing and fucking endless landscaping can all fucking rot.  fuck you fuck you fuck you
