Desperately Seeking Rumor Causing Latest Market Spike

Tyler Durden's picture

In the past few minutes, the market, in true stung dog fashion, has soared without anyone even being faintly aware of what the actual news is. The consensus for the time being is that the primary driver of the latest bout of idiocy is the following BBG headline:

  • GREEK PRIME MINISTER MAY BE IMF'S ROUMELIOTIS, NET TV SAYS

How this makes any sense we don't know. Supposedly the IMF being in charge of Greece will make losses to European banks even more negligible (and Greek austerity that much more austere) or something. We don't even pretend to comprehend this BS any more. Obviously we would say this rumor is total BS, but with Europe now a fully onionized continent, we prefer to keep our mouth shut.

What next: Donald Trump for new Greek president?

This tape is about as normal as any other tape I've seen in 12 years of full-time trading. Is this less normal than 1998? What about the short squeeze of 2006? What about the chaos of 2004?

2011 is just as 'normal' (or abnormal) as any other market period in recent memory.

It's the "Berlusconi Trade," as the "pros think his resignation/defeat tomorrow will boost the Euro and cause Italy to rally 4%."  So people are hoping for a bye bye Berlusconi Bounce.  Presumably because some moron thinks a more LEFT wing government will force even more "austerity" onto Italians?  Is there no democracy or logic left in Europe?

Berlusconi may be the only person in Italy that can remotely keep Italy together by shere force of personality, even if he is a corrupt clown.  With him gone, let the riots begin.

I have been mentioning the full USA default in end of 2015-beginning of 2016 here:

http://www.tfmetalsreport.com/comment/78029#comment-78029

However, in initial post about this issue, I was speaking about US debt correction, that is distributed haircut of around 3 trillion USD in 2013-2014:

http://saposjoint.net/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=2626&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=100#p31678

Here is the chart that supports that initial view. Its a fit of certain pre-crash behaviour model. How it is produced, is explained here:

http://saposjoint.net/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=2626&p=34998#p34998

So its earlier than I was saying lately. Lately I was talking of a full scale default, but it looks like it will be gradual, and the first one will happen very soon. To be honest, I forgot about my first idea-but usually they are the most accurate. So some assumptions following it will have to be reworked.

The approximate visual fit with Sornette Johansen log-periodic process with critical time tc = September 30 2013-January 1st, 2014:

http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6100/6322611889_f67e5664fe_o.png

QUESTIONS:

1) The distribution of haircuts of such partial US default (who will forgive 3-4-5 trillion USA debt in few months?)
2) consequences for USD rate to currencies
3) consequences for USD rate to commodities
4) consequences for USD rate to gold, silver ( i will dig into my charts on this)

We're circling the drain right now; 2012'll be the start of the actual going down the drain. We won't hit bottom until post-2016 when the sheep realize that no amount of elections will save them.

Mon, 11/07/2011 - 17:19 | 1854684 Incubus
Incubus's picture

No, but I happen to know that people are suckers for "hope" -- they'll always see some silver lining that doesn't exist.  They want to secure their entitlements and comfortable lifestyles: they do not want justice, or freedom, or anything like that.

People are holding out that 2012 and the change of the puppet-in-chief will effect any sort of change, but we know how that works, don't we?

It'll take another 4 years and another election for the sheep to starve enough and lose their coveted entitlements before they'll finally become violent.

And what do you want lottery numbers for?  You're no better than any wallstreet bankster trash, it seems?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ll3uipTO-4A

Seems like the lot of you just mouth your words to go along with the flow--but when it come down to it, each and every one of you has a price.  You'd sell your asses for the right price--and it's absolutely disgusting.  And many of you people wonder what's wrong with the world today?  Look in the fucking mirror.

Don't know what the rumour was, but seems kinda like a technical bounce off of the 20 DMA, to me. Support is holding as we've tested that line for the past 5 trading days.

Saw some short term aggressive sell signals today but they just didn't really follow through. I'm neutral to bullish short term, but very bearish longterm, obviously.

Maybe we'll retest the 200 DMA before this "rally" finally ends.

Do we expect that to change in six months? I mean there is stupid transfered from your brain to your fingers sometimes but Eurozone crisis forgotten in six months? wow!

I know they are stalling for time so inflation can reduce the unpayable debts but 6 months is not enough time; unless you mean a temporary rumor.

They also need to re-capitalize from somewhere but they can't seem to sell any of that EFSF debt.

Not to mention Italy 10 year approaching 7%.

Are you betting on a FED bailout of Italy?

Yes, with modern processors printing binary database dollars is instantaneous.

Someone on CNBC was talking about a "papertrail" with regard to MF Global accounting.  Hah!  No paper and no trail anymore, just a keystroke or two and reality is altered.

Hyperinflation can now occur overnight, IMHO.

The official media comment:

2:00 pm : A barrage of buying interest has stocks charging higher. Although they aren't yet back to their best levels of the day, stocks are now up nicely from the lows that were set around mid-session.

There hasn't been any headline to account for the stock market's recent upturn, but it has coincided with a bounce by the euro, which is now at $1.376 for only a fractional loss.

Somebody got a fresh clip (a barrage?) of fiat $'s to play with.
