Did Iran Just Retaliate For Stuxnet? Computer Virus Infects US Predator Drone System

Tyler Durden's picture

It was only a matter of time: the weakest link in the otherwise awesome idea that is a remote-controlled military, represented by the thousands of Predator and Reaper drones, has always been its biggest strength: the fact that it is remote-controlled. Which means that with no person on location, the system has always been susceptible to infiltration in the form of intermediation between the offsite pilot and the actual equipment. Such as a virus. And as Wired reports, a viral infestation, the biggest nightmare for the the US drone fleet, has just struck. "A computer virus has infected the cockpits of America’s Predator and Reaper drones, logging pilots’ every keystroke as they remotely fly missions over Afghanistan and other warzones. The virus, first detected nearly two weeks ago by the military’s Host-Based Security System, has not prevented pilots at Creech Air Force Base in Nevada from flying their missions overseas. Nor have there been any confirmed incidents of classified information being lost or sent to an outside source. But the virus has resisted multiple efforts to remove it from Creech’s computers, network security specialists say. And the infection underscores the ongoing security risks in what has become the U.S. military’s most important weapons system." Well that is truly Ironic: the "western" world tried to cripple (and failed) Iran's nuclear program with Stuxnet; it will, then, be supremely ironic if Iran retaliates by maxing out the credit cards of the US Air Force logging the credit card number as pilots purchase stuff online, and uses these to buy weaponized plutonium from Russia using Uncle Sam's credit card.

More:

“We keep wiping it off, and it keeps coming back,” says a source familiar with the network infection, one of three that told Danger Room about the virus. “We think it’s benign. But we just don’t know.”

Ah yes, the good old "it's a benign viral infestation of a top-secret military system" excuse. It's a classic. Works everytimg too.

And more:

Military network security specialists aren’t sure whether the virus and its so-called “keylogger” payload were introduced intentionally or by accident; it may be a common piece of malware that just happened to make its way into these sensitive networks. The specialists don’t know exactly how far the virus has spread. But they’re sure that the infection has hit both classified and unclassified machines at Creech. That raises the possibility, at least, that secret data may have been captured by the keylogger, and then transmitted over the public internet to someone outside the military chain of command.

Drones have become America’s tool of choice in both its conventional
and shadow wars, allowing U.S. forces to attack targets and spy on its
foes without risking American lives. Since President Obama assumed
office, a fleet of approximately 30 CIA-directed drones have hit targets
in Pakistan more than 230 times; all told, these drones have killed more than 2,000 suspected militants and civilians, according to the Washington Post.
More than 150 additional Predator and Reaper drones, under U.S. Air
Force control, watch over the fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq. American
military drones struck 92 times in Libya between mid-April and late August. And late last month, an American drone killed top terrorist Anwar al-Awlaki — part of an escalating unmanned air assault in the Horn of Africa and southern Arabian peninsula.

But despite their widespread use, the drone systems are known to have
security flaws. Many Reapers and Predators don’t encrypt the video they
transmit to  American troops on the ground. In the summer of 2009, U.S.
forces discovered “days and days and hours and hours” of the drone footage on the laptops of Iraqi insurgents. A $26 piece of software allowed the militants to capture the video.

Next up: "terrorists" intercept control of America's drone system. That may explain why authorities are mulling the consequences of a New York nuclear strike. News not at eleven.

People must realize the REASON we have drones that kill, no need for Congressional approval of force when technically, Americans are not in theater or in harms way. It is at the descretion of the President, a robot army that can kill at will.

Was on an hour long stuxnet webinar that basically said it was designed to attack a certain type of PLC system which had a specific piece of data at a very specific memory location.  Ie someone put that line of code in their PLC's such that it was a timebomb waiting for the virus to be launched.  Many, many PLC's had  been probed by the virus on different company networks, however not having that specific line of code, meant they were not affected.  Also, it was estimated that it was a virus written by at a minimun 5-6 people over a 6-month period FULL TIME.  So yes, it was directed directly at IRAN.

Well, the funniest thing of these remote controlled drones and other weapons is that the Pentagon uses the TCP/IP protocol to control them, in other words, every drone and every ICBM (intercontinental ballistic missile...) has an IP-address that can be reached and taken over by "bad guys" with bad intentions.

They probably spent too much money for 100 USD hammers and other overpriced shit to afford a proprietary system... but then, on the other hand, it is not really THAT important, isn't it?

that is actually plausible.  10 years after the incident used as pretext for clampdown on american citizens, the walls between covert-capable agencies are bigger and more dense than ever, and the number of persons with top-security clearances is huge, sprawling, and out of  control.

we've never been more 'ripe' for a rogue government unit to essentially shadow-control the DC cabal, start its own private wars, engage in domestic espionage, and carry out false flag ops undetected.

Which probably drives those elusive and strangely resilient terriers. After all, that elementary question of - who benefits from the crime - has been conveniently ignored. When you have an act of war - even from an abstraction like terrierism - this renders any criminal investigation unnecessary. All that is necessary is fighting for god and country and democracy which incidentally is huge business for corporations funding the two-part one party U.S. political system and its military and 60 intelligence agencies but not for the terriers.

Shame on you for laughing at Uncle Sam´s good intentions. War is very good for GDP and the profit of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. I only wish there was technology to wipe out entire cities with hurricanes or earthquakes. This would help the economy in a big way. You know, like the reconstruction of Iraq was a big selling point back then. The fact that the countries Uncle Sam conquered are horrible basket cases and doomed to remain so for decades to come (requiring endless occupation and expense) is just business as usual. In a peaceful world the DJIA would be at 3000 and crude at $20.

War has always been sold on advertising labels. It used to be for god and king and country and still is to considerable extent  but in recent times the selling point of democracy has been added into the mix. But war is always about plunder. It has always been easier to rob someone else than working hard to build up your wealth. Over time this elementary shortcut has been legalized and pushed with all sorts of pretenses and provocations.

All wars ever have been about energy. In earlier history it was about arable land and firewood and the energy expenditure in aquiring the energy consisted in troops walking on foot. Nowadays the U.S. military is the world´s biggest buyer of fuel. Who benefits? Why is Uncle Sam famous for losing the wars it wins?

Sorry, I call likely BS on this 'Wired' report.

Caveat, I was a commissioned officer in the Air Force for 9 years in satellite operations and have been involved in military embedded systems using real-time operating systems development for 20+ years, including UAV control software for General Atomics. These are likely embedded systems, not MS Windows or something that can easily be infected by a virus.  It may be Linux, but even so some stripped down version.  There is likely no way it would be 'logging their keystrokes' unless the systems developers were guilty of serious dereliction of duty in their systems design.  It should be impossible.

Update - after researching it might actually be they are running Linux on the GCS as they say in the Wored report. However, IMHO, they should not be. It should be an RTOS system without such vulnerabilities. I gave a paper on the topic of requiring UAV ground stations to meet FAA regulations as aircraft software does in 2007 at the AUVSI conference in 2007.  The gist of it was were letting UAV operators get away with far too little safety/security reguation. This was after a Predator crashed near a school near Tucson.  If they indeed have viruses on the GCS, it indicates a flaw in the military procurement system.

Live by the sword... die by the sword. If we use drones others will use drones. A game changer. Makes me wonder why they would let this intel out. Seems to me this kind of vunerability you would want to keep on the QT unless you wish to point back to this news for a false flag event.

Smells funny and tastes like chicken! Good catch Tyler.

this stuff is way above my pay grade, but usually when the military puts out info, while... (from Wired link):

In the meantime, technicians at Creech are trying to get the virus off the GCS machines. It has not been easy.... “That meant rebuilding them from scratch” — a time-consuming effort.

The Air Force declined to comment directly on the virus. “We generally do not discuss specific vulnerabilities, threats, or responses to our computer networks, since that helps people looking to exploit or attack our systems to refine their approach,” says Lt. Col. Tadd Sholtis, a spokesman for Air Combat Command, which oversees the drones and all other Air Force tactical aircraft. “We invest a lot in protecting and monitoring our systems to counter threats and ensure security, which includes a comprehensive response to viruses, worms, and other malware we discover.”

However, insiders say that senior officers at Creech are being briefed daily on the virus.

“It’s getting a lot of attention,” the source says. “But no one’s panicking. Yet.”

(end paste)...as i was saying, usually when the military gets this cutesie with their "flight-suited pilots" some of whom in the photo seem to be wearing scout uniforms, Exclusive: Computer Virus Hits U.S. Drone Fleet | Danger Room | Wired.com, and their 'secret location', right after one of these has been used to kill an american citizen who was sentenced to death by TPTB, it is just disinfo & spin.  none of it is real, almost certainly...  but it probably is the info that the blogsite is getting from "creech"

...do not notice what the other hand is doing...

what are they teaching @ West Point these daze about the military's new role in the remote killing of american civilians b/c of political "security" for the homeland?  huh?  trials take too long?  not the old "off with their heads" looney tuneZ military psychosis?  again?

must.have.war.now.  oh, bullshit!  they just want our money!  and our credit!  and our voter participation, too!

which may be why "unauthorized viral entities" are now.monitoring.every.keystroke.BiCheZ.

It's probably CIA tapping into the military drones for their own purposes and it's black ops no one has clearance to know but some hacker found it and wrote up a repot bringing it to light.  Blame Iran cover story is expected. Dancing with the stars is on!

Soon...headline:     ROGUE PREDATOR DRONE FIRES HELLFIRE MISSLE - KILLS KARZI

Now that might be a way of the US getting rid of an embarassing and ncooperative puppet - AND we can blame Iran when it turns out that 'Rogue Predtor was being controlled by a source in Iran'

More creative than "Iranian speedboats trying to sink US ships" (Been there, Did that, Tonkin Gulf 1964 ... you thought nobody remembered?)

...those NTI boys, like the Son of ''Say Uncle Sam'' ''I ain't no Nunn'' (33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason), and The Prince of Nutballs From Jordan (another) Hussein, ...they have been telegraphing this punch pretty good and it's over due but, if you have noticed, as time has past in the last 5 years of their call, this ''Apollyon Rising 2012'' occult masonic bullshit fits right in line with all their NWO plans for their ''global'' security ''post'' WMD aftermath ''plan(s)''. Yall have seen their movies, telling you what they are going to do the day after the ''Last Best Chance'' and ''Nuclear Tipping Point'' rolls out their red carpet for their plan. Pete Peterson and War&Buffet and the British German Children of Wrathschild above them will be selling more popcorn for their show, as long as you accept their new and completed mark of the beast seal upon you.

You can be sure, the same FBI (new world orders) that blew up the WTC in 93 and the same ''Knights of the Secret Circle'' jerks, whom Iran Contra to the Constitution (pardon me) and later on, in their Grand Chessboard game, after blowing up things like the FBI building in Oklahoma City, ...they will not just implode trillions of JP Morgan and DOD theft evidence, and payoff the bribed that Madoff with all your money, boys behind the masonic secret security seal of an oath against life, like the Lucky Larry Silverstein and the 911 Jetsetters and their ''Home Run'' (remote control plan(es) and ''pull it'' cuz we can get away with murder, ...it's has now turned HFT SkyNet ...Drone gone wild and loose nukes plants, by the Tsunami sea shore, combined with the Lone Gunmen(lol) of Norway and the Islamic Spring Time Israeli War. Sheeit, the Great Wal Mart of China and the Russian Mobsters ready to posture up the Israeli Islamic and Global Market of the Beast Prophetic Peace Plan are just courier pigeons, of the Antichrist, waiting for the time when they let loose their inner Drone Dragon Wings ...a few years after.

"That may explain why authorities are mulling the consequences of a New York nuclear strike. News not at eleven."

If the global banking mafia ever wanted a reason to make the stock markets disappear, and along with them a whole lot of their problems, who better to blame than the country Israel's just itching to nuke for no reasonable reason whatsoever?  If there are viruses in the drone system, don't look at Iran as being the source.  Look at the same people who brought down the World Trade Centers.  And I'm not talking about any Muslims.

drone = drohne

German word describing the male honey bees which are driven out from the bee house in late summer. Drones do not collect honey and survive as long as they are fed by the rest of the bee state.

The Nazis build the first drones so called flying bombs. They were sent over from Germany to England but the navigation sytem was very primitive and so the drones could not have any significant impact on the war. The flying bombs were at best capable to detonate randomly within a circle of several miles. These were parallel developments to the Nazi-rockets reaching London.

At that time the name drone was chosen correctly if one can say so. Because: a) the drones were very loud and made a roaring sound comparable to the bee drones on their last rounds around the bee house.

b) the drones were designed for a one time use. The carrier unit detonated together with the war head once it reached the ground. Just like the drones fall down at the end and die. The destiny of these flying bombs was to go down and to disintegrate into pieces.

The drones now are completely different. They are small planes carrying rockets simply said.

But the Americans are lazy and they do not think about names. But names are not meaningless and drones will for ever be named dones and thus their final destiny is to crash down uncontrolled. The name says it the fate of the drones is sealed.

Seems it takes not to much to achieve this, besides some genius iranian math guy or two. There is no shortage of such guys in Iran. Remember they were the guys introducing the "zero" into math while making astronomical calculations appx. 500 B.C.
