Did They Just Shut Down The Government AGAIN? Continuing Resolution Vote Fails

Tyler Durden's picture

Luckily the US has everything else in order, which is why it can afford to shut down the government... Again. Per Bloomberg:

  • HOUSE REJECTS BILL CONTAINING DISASTER RELIEF AID
  • REPUBLICAN DEFECTIONS LEAD TO DEFEAT OF BUDGET BILL
  • SPENDING BILL NEEDED TO FUND GOVERNMENT PAST SEPT. 30
  • REPUBLICANS OBJECTED TO OVERALL COST OF SPENDING BILL

Yep, looks like it: From Reuters:

A bill that would fund the U.S. government past Sept. 30 unexpectedly failed in the House of Representatives on Wednesday as dozens of Republicans broke with party leaders and Democrats objected to a cut to an electric-vehicle program. The measure failed by a vote of 195 to 230.

From CNN: House fails to pass continuing resolution

In a major blow to the Republican leadership, the U.S. House on Wednesday defeated a temporary spending measure that would have required spending cuts to offset additional money for federal disaster relief efforts.

From Bloomberg: Republican Defections Defeat Bill Containing Disaster Relief Aid

The U.S. House rejected a bill that includes $3.65 billion in aid to victims of Hurricane Irene and other natural disasters, a setback for Republican leaders controlling the chamber.

Some Republican lawmakers objected to the measure’s overall cost and House Democrats opposed a spending cut in it, leading to the bill’s defeat.

The vote against the bill was 230-195.

The dispute raises the specter of a government shutdown because the disaster assistance is attached to a measure needed to fund the government until Nov. 18. The current fiscal year ends Sept. 30, and Congress is in recess next week.

And Bernanke hopes to pass fiscal stimulus in this climate?

The Dems think shutting the doors will benefit them like in '95 with Slick Willy. The Repubs playing to the Tea party base and their campaign promises. Both think they win, but the real winner would be the country.

Any chance these asshats can be put out of business, even for a short time, is a positive. Meanwhile, the deficit mounts daily, the economy sinks further, and consumer confidence goes lower. It's only a matter of time before this whole stinking mess blows up.

Grow up. We clearly don't need a budget, because we have gone the last 3 years without a budget. That PROVES we don't need a budget. All we need to do is re-elect Obama, put the Dems back in control of house, and Frank Pelosi (the first congress-being cloned out of 2 separate DNA strands) will convince us that we also don't need a debt ceiling. When Bernake finally matures a little more, and decides to roll the natinoal debt into 100 yr T-bills at .00000001 % yield, we should be able to stay fiscally solvent until the sun runs out of hydrogen.

OT..SORTA...I recently bot a storage locker to help a friend who had fallen on hard times. Mostly vintage clothes, shoes, purses, etc from her failed biz about 8 yrs ago. I called a friend out in SF to see if there was any interest in high quality vintage stuff. His reply: Store fronts are cheap...most being boarded up. The only thing that sells is weed. Same for Colorado. Just weed. Can you imagine how quickly the casino boats would close if they ever got serious about shutting down high quality weed? All I can say is thank god for the underground economy.....w/o which, we would have surely perished by now.

I'd advise your friend to liquidate, rather than store the stuff.  Setup a blanket on the streetcorner and sell cheaply until gone.  Maybe some stoner will walk by and need a new piece of kit to put his weed in there.

230 to 195. That's a big difference considering that both leaderships wanted their members to go the other way. The next year will be very contentious. Seeing that the S&P downgrade was based in part on this kind of disagreement, should we expect further downgrades?

I would say the S&P downgrade was based more on the fact we have normalized the FED.gov spending around 10% of GDP in borrowed or printed money, with no end in sight.

Or maybe someone looked at our gabillion dollar unfunded ponzi schemes.

How is it that the political fighting DURING negotiations is a bigger reason than the NEED to raise it?

This is worse than a B grade horror movie. Ahhh, but I can see it now.

Harry Reid, a most honorable and intelligent Senator from Nevada addresses the chamber and pontificates:

Members of the Senate, this most austere body, elected to represent our citizens, we must take the lead for the people.

I propose, effective immediately:

1. A 15% pay reduction to all in Congress.

2. A 25% reduction in expenses for all members.

3. All health plan premiums will be paid by each individual for each plan.

4. No retirement until age 65 and only with 12 years of service. And reduced 15% from current rates.

It is the right thing to do. We must show the nation that we are leaders, not followers and do what is right for this great society.

And to ensure that we do what is right for the citizens, I propose a change to the constitution...2 six year terms maximum and then return to private life.

And I bet you all wonder what the f___  is he inhaling!!! :)

Our government, no our SOCIETY is broken. It is during times like these that evil rises to power- Napolean, Hitler, Stalin, Mao come to mind.  I can't help but think Obama is intentionally crashing the system.

Evil doesn't "rise" to power by itself: evil is LIFTED into positions of power by the wide-eyed masses, salivating at the thought of any plan that ends with them getting a piece of the pie, or a larger piece of the pie, or all of the pie, or more than all of the pie.

You think they allow someone like Hitler into power because they're interested in justice, or righting any sort of wrong?  The only wrongs they're interested in is the "wrongs" where their entitlements have run out;  they'll masturbate theoretics on any plan on getting a supplementary teat.

Awkward: House leaders to honor Rangel nine months after censure

http://thehill.com/homenews/house/183047-house-leaders-to-honor-rangel-n...

"

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) will speak at a ceremony to unveil Rangel’s official portrait as chairman of the storied committee, which the longtime New York Democrat led from 2007 until March 2010, when party leaders pressured him to give up the post amid a growing ethics scandal.

In December, the House voted overwhelmingly, 333-79, to censure Rangel over rules violations that stemmed from unpaid taxes on a villa he owned in the Dominican Republic, undisclosed financial assets and the improper use of his office for fundraising.

The conservatives in the House need to continue the strategy of slightly trimming the budget withe every extension. Democrats don't have the balls to vote it down lest they be blamed for a shutdown. This at least gets the momentum moving towards cuts.

How do you switch out of military time on here?

I'm worried that USE OF FORCE or COLLATERAL DAMAGE whatever his name is is going to literally para troop into my backyard

and just decimate me with a laser pointed silenced automatic weapon. I don't want him to NEUTRALIZE MY ASS.
(seriously)

Gotta keep track of the time. xe is everywhere...

WEAPONS NECESSARY. How do you like that nickname ?

Anyways does anybody know if the below financial statement below is true or even mildly accurate>?

I want to QUADRUPLE my money by ANY MEANS NECESSARY.

1. Open Interest (which indicates a desire to Buy or Sell Index Options) normally stands at a few hundred contracts on any expiration date. A Contract must be created in order for it to be considered an Open Interest.

2. As of 9/19/11, the S&P 500 stood at 1204. Their are three types of Put Options, "At the Money" (strike price is 1204), "In the money" (strike price is above 1204), or "Out of the Money" (strike price below 1204).

3. A 1204 Strike price, October Option cost $4,000. A 1310 Strike Price is now valued at $17,000. That means with a 105 point drop in the S&P 500, the average Index Option increases 400% in value.

4. Remember, Open Interest on Put Options normally stands at less than 1,000 Contracts. Here is what October Put Options that Bet Against the S&P 500 look like for October, 2011:

Open Interest: Strike Price:

12,467 500
17,893 650
67,816 750
116,406 800
51,789 850
27,742 875
64,123 900
20,392 925
52,737 950
26,701 975
90,031 1,000
117,902 1,100
127,798 1,150
127,036 1,200

...cause the Republicans are fiscally responsable...oh wait what happened again when they had the executive and legislative branches.  They spent like it everything was going out of style.  They are trying to engineer a recession in order to help their election chances come Nov next year.  If anyone here thinks otherwise, they are obviously biased.
