Did They Just Shut Down The Government AGAIN? Continuing Resolution Vote Fails
Luckily the US has everything else in order, which is why it can afford to shut down the government... Again. Per Bloomberg:
- HOUSE REJECTS BILL CONTAINING DISASTER RELIEF AID
- REPUBLICAN DEFECTIONS LEAD TO DEFEAT OF BUDGET BILL
- SPENDING BILL NEEDED TO FUND GOVERNMENT PAST SEPT. 30
- REPUBLICANS OBJECTED TO OVERALL COST OF SPENDING BILL
Yep, looks like it: From Reuters:
A bill that would fund the U.S. government past Sept. 30 unexpectedly failed in the House of Representatives on Wednesday as dozens of Republicans broke with party leaders and Democrats objected to a cut to an electric-vehicle program. The measure failed by a vote of 195 to 230.
From CNN: House fails to pass continuing resolution
In a major blow to the Republican leadership, the U.S. House on Wednesday defeated a temporary spending measure that would have required spending cuts to offset additional money for federal disaster relief efforts.
From Bloomberg: Republican Defections Defeat Bill Containing Disaster Relief Aid
The U.S. House rejected a bill that includes $3.65 billion in aid to victims of Hurricane Irene and other natural disasters, a setback for Republican leaders controlling the chamber.
Some Republican lawmakers objected to the measure’s overall cost and House Democrats opposed a spending cut in it, leading to the bill’s defeat.
The vote against the bill was 230-195.
The dispute raises the specter of a government shutdown because the disaster assistance is attached to a measure needed to fund the government until Nov. 18. The current fiscal year ends Sept. 30, and Congress is in recess next week.
And Bernanke hopes to pass fiscal stimulus in this climate?

My candidate will fix all this shit and everybody will be prosperous and happy.
Why not present the FEMA bill without assorted garbage attached if they want something to pass. Me thinks they doth protest too much. All they do is bitch and get paid for it. I wish my husband was as generous as the US taxpayer.
That's exactly what the Senate Dems did. House Repubs no likey.
Being informed: it helps.
Is anybody seriously worried about debt ceilings with free money at zero cost??
Heck, at these bargain basement rates, the Congress should increase our debt by another $1 trillion and simply start handing out checks!!!
let's play a game. imagine crack is now free and in unlimited supply. YEEEEHAWWW pig slicer!
And I would suppose you would borrow that TRILLION @ a one month maturity?
RotoTraitor classic:
"Congress should increase our debt by another $1 trillion and simply start handing out checks!!!"
The reason this wouldn't work is because assholes like yourself would have gone all in at Dow 12,700...oops , you did that without the free money.
Bye bye
...popasc w szok
Kill Bill vol.2?
masakra
This is certainly confidence inspiring. Should be good for another 100pts up tomorrow on the DOW.
We're better off! Here! Here!
We are not better off. At some point, the bills will get paid, late fees included... Also, the last time I checked, we have men and women following orders on ships, planes & battalions here and abroad. What about them?
The Dems think shutting the doors will benefit them like in '95 with Slick Willy. The Repubs playing to the Tea party base and their campaign promises. Both think they win, but the real winner would be the country.
Any chance these asshats can be put out of business, even for a short time, is a positive. Meanwhile, the deficit mounts daily, the economy sinks further, and consumer confidence goes lower. It's only a matter of time before this whole stinking mess blows up.
If they shut the whore house will the 30 year yield go down more?

SHUT R' DOWN BITCHEZ
Let's close the lid on this 5 weeks-too-old Chinese food carton.
Just to clarify, the R's want something cut to pay for it, ala Pay-Go. EPA and DoE are the best choices with those crap green energy BS.
They also want specification on how and where it is spent.
Not another Lib boondoggle.
There are much, much better targets to slice first. DHS, TSA and military to start
Where is the budget?
Isn't congress supposed to pass a budget?
i'd be shocked if those imbeciles could pass the salt
I'd be shocked if you could find 3 out of the whole lot who could pass gas at an all you can eat chili contest.
Bwaney sure can toot on TV!
Didju see it this morning? Didja didja didja?
He was being interviewed by the Morons on CNBS about how the Jobs/Tax/Whicheveritis... Tax bill (Jobs portion is temporary, taxes are permanent... Fuckers... trying to sneak it past again....)
He said that He and Schumer were no fucking way gonna happen the way it's been proposed by His Majesty MeMeMe.
And sure as "Shit", he farted again!
Easy to fart as much as Bwany with such a case of ass gape.
Grow up. We clearly don't need a budget, because we have gone the last 3 years without a budget. That PROVES we don't need a budget. All we need to do is re-elect Obama, put the Dems back in control of house, and Frank Pelosi (the first congress-being cloned out of 2 separate DNA strands) will convince us that we also don't need a debt ceiling. When Bernake finally matures a little more, and decides to roll the natinoal debt into 100 yr T-bills at .00000001 % yield, we should be able to stay fiscally solvent until the sun runs out of hydrogen.
whooo hooo hooo. u kill me! oh, that was rich.
With friends like these (our politicians), who needs an enemy! We are fucked.
Can't OK spending for local victims of natural disasters but foreign aid persists....
Now, how is Mr. Nobel effin peace prize going to pay for the bombs to send to far away places to blow things up and kill people?

OT..SORTA...I recently bot a storage locker to help a friend who had fallen on hard times. Mostly vintage clothes, shoes, purses, etc from her failed biz about 8 yrs ago. I called a friend out in SF to see if there was any interest in high quality vintage stuff. His reply: Store fronts are cheap...most being boarded up. The only thing that sells is weed. Same for Colorado. Just weed. Can you imagine how quickly the casino boats would close if they ever got serious about shutting down high quality weed? All I can say is thank god for the underground economy.....w/o which, we would have surely perished by now.
I'd advise your friend to liquidate, rather than store the stuff. Setup a blanket on the streetcorner and sell cheaply until gone. Maybe some stoner will walk by and need a new piece of kit to put his weed in there.
Save the storage fees.
It failed 8 years ago for a reason. 8 years of storage is even more fail.
The worse things get, the more people want to escape.

Sure told him. I guess making a critical (and humurous) observation of only one party MUST mean he supports the other. So much for fair and balanced reporting here (and so much for logic). Maybe they teach that here after week 78. HA!
Fair and Balanced.
Fair and Fucking Balanced.
Shackle one of each togeather at the ankles and have them try to walk a high wire strung between the airels on the Empire State and Chrysler Buildings.
Fair and fucking Balance!
Balance!
Yes, it's fucking fair... Payback!
In the interest of Bipolarship, fucking Balance
As in Balance the fucking books.
As in what is the balance of the Gold in Fort Knox....
Don't get me going....
you know things are bad when the parasites start to argue amongst themselves over how much nutrients to suck out of the host...
makes one wonder if they haven't come to the realization that said host on which they all feed is on life support, thanks largely to their feeding habits, and is damn near dead.
kind of an "oh shit" moment for them, trying to figure out how they are going to continue doing there parasite things and living there parasite lives...
If only we could extend any temp DC shutdown to a more permanent arrangement...it would be independence all over again.
Register Independent and vote out every incumbent for the next 2 elections. It's gathering steam and it will put the freakin country back in our hands.
"Did They Just Shut Down The Government"
Yes and that's bullish for Markets. Don't cry tomorrow
over DOW gains.. :))) Buy stocks, bitchez.
lmfao, this is right up there with iq45's "this friday's close will be higher than last friday." funny, he's not around much today. don't expect to see you around much tomorrow, either.

Hell, I'm running
Well people sleeping in their cars after the Hurricane washed their house away will be pleased to hear the politicians took a stand. Snow will start flying in Vermont next month. I hope the car heaters are working.
They obviously haven't paid their fair share. Whatever that is.
How is the Federal Taxpayer responsible for a person who lost their house? Don't they have INSURANCE?
Don't you have insurance?
The last place I would look if a storm totaled my house is the Federal Taxpayer. It is my responsibility to prepare for the worst and hope for the best.
You, sir, are part of the problem.
Had to reply Moe, an astute point.
My hometown got hit with severe flooding a couple weeks ago. Second big flood in 5 years. Many who rebuilt DID NOT buy flood insurance.
Moral hazard is all FEMA is. Liberty is dead when you have to power to put a gun to one mans head and order him to give money to another.
Here is (reportedly) Davey Crockett's "Not yours to give."

You are uninformed on the situation. FEMA sells the insurance and isnt paying up. These people have been buying flood insurance from FEMA for years and now of course arent getting their claims honored. Why does FEMA sell flood insurance? I have no fucking clue.
Is there any alternative to Reps and Dems in the USA?
Sick of the both parties. Bastards only care about their
political ambitions and nothing else.
a vibrant second party... good Republicans. look and yee will find.

I just threw up in my mouth a little.
There is a party called Libertarian since the early 1970's. It is a national party. Dues are cheap, I have been a member for years.
The boundry between the observer and the observed is the source of all conflict.
Disaster relief aid aka FEMA aka mismanaged jackbooted thugs that stumble under their own weight.
I have a funny feeling about all this.
i know, they could just declare every person in new england affected by hurricane irene as ssi/disabled. i bet they are a lot more disabled than most around here that receive it.
Nice avatar, sailor.

230 to 195. That's a big difference considering that both leaderships wanted their members to go the other way. The next year will be very contentious. Seeing that the S&P downgrade was based in part on this kind of disagreement, should we expect further downgrades?
I would say the S&P downgrade was based more on the fact we have normalized the FED.gov spending around 10% of GDP in borrowed or printed money, with no end in sight.
Or maybe someone looked at our gabillion dollar unfunded ponzi schemes.
How is it that the political fighting DURING negotiations is a bigger reason than the NEED to raise it?

"In a major blow to the Republican leadership,"
"Republican leadership"
Let that phrase roll around in your think cage for a bit.
Now try "Democratic leadership"
That doesn't work either?
My candidate is looking better all the time...
It wasn't unexpected that it would fail. Senate Democrats stuffed a bunch of stuff into the bill and dared the House to reject it. There have been rumblings in DC about this all week.
This is worse than a B grade horror movie. Ahhh, but I can see it now.
Harry Reid, a most honorable and intelligent Senator from Nevada addresses the chamber and pontificates:
Members of the Senate, this most austere body, elected to represent our citizens, we must take the lead for the people.
I propose, effective immediately:
1. A 15% pay reduction to all in Congress.
2. A 25% reduction in expenses for all members.
3. All health plan premiums will be paid by each individual for each plan.
4. No retirement until age 65 and only with 12 years of service. And reduced 15% from current rates.
It is the right thing to do. We must show the nation that we are leaders, not followers and do what is right for this great society.
And to ensure that we do what is right for the citizens, I propose a change to the constitution...2 six year terms maximum and then return to private life.
And I bet you all wonder what the f___ is he inhaling!!! :)
Also, we will allow lawyers and LLMs to hold office. But you must pass a test of constitutional knowledge and Shakespearian texts. Even the parts you dont like.
If the fed ever gets shut down--I've got a bank I'm interested in starting up. We could give out very attractive low interest loans to help with the rebuilding of America. You know you want that money. At my rates, it's practically free money!
Anyone interested in a joint business venture?
Let the Austerity begin!
It doesnt matter if they pass legislation.. they can just shut everything down!
If I have said it once! I have said it a 1,000 fucking times!!
All we need is some Austerity to Fix ALL! of these problems!
Am I the only one that think I when I'm an old fart I'll be telling my grankids stories of the good ole days of the USA when we owned cars, homes, had jobs, and could buy a gallon of gas for less then $100 a gallon?
Our government, no our SOCIETY is broken. It is during times like these that evil rises to power- Napolean, Hitler, Stalin, Mao come to mind. I can't help but think Obama is intentionally crashing the system.
Evil doesn't "rise" to power by itself: evil is LIFTED into positions of power by the wide-eyed masses, salivating at the thought of any plan that ends with them getting a piece of the pie, or a larger piece of the pie, or all of the pie, or more than all of the pie.
You think they allow someone like Hitler into power because they're interested in justice, or righting any sort of wrong? The only wrongs they're interested in is the "wrongs" where their entitlements have run out; they'll masturbate theoretics on any plan on getting a supplementary teat.
Promises weigh more than any justice, or anything truly good. I'll promise you the world, and you know you want it.
Hey, what's wrong with Hitler. The Bamster modeled OBAMACARE on the Hitlerian healthcare model. Down to the death panels. (Yes Mildred, the Germans had them too.). I hope you are not saying: Obama = Hitler?
i feel like a broken record.
Napolean, Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Obama.
which one of these names doesn't belong?
hint: the one that's the puppet of the establishment elite.
THey just increased the debt ceiling by trillions last month and they're already back to feed at the taxpayer trough?
GOOD! I'm ready to try a little dose of anarchy for awhile!
Me too, but keep the perma-lower class humanoids away from me. They don't know how to have any good, harmless anarchy.
Train them a bit, then I'll play with them.
Incubus' ideal anarchy would be like a weekend picnic; great fun for all of us.
Terminate the federal government.
Terminate the federal reserve.
The USSR vanished decades ago, and the world is much better off for that. The USSA should vanish today, and the world would be even better served.
This should say it all:
Awkward: House leaders to honor Rangel nine months after censure
http://thehill.com/homenews/house/183047-house-leaders-to-honor-rangel-n...
"
Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) will speak at a ceremony to unveil Rangel’s official portrait as chairman of the storied committee, which the longtime New York Democrat led from 2007 until March 2010, when party leaders pressured him to give up the post amid a growing ethics scandal.
In December, the House voted overwhelmingly, 333-79, to censure Rangel over rules violations that stemmed from unpaid taxes on a villa he owned in the Dominican Republic, undisclosed financial assets and the improper use of his office for fundraising.
"
I am a rookie here, BUT CAN ANY ONE OF YOU SMART FUCKERS ON ZH TELL ME HOW RON PAUL OR SARAH PALIN CAN BE ANY WORSE THAN THESE HORRIBLE, EVIL PEOPLE?
And to pre-empt some comments, I am not implying that they are better: I am asking how can they be worse?
You showed your stripes when you didn't say
RP, SP or Hillary".....
Just another example of the political leanings here and the validity of my comment above....
Junk ratio should be about 2:1 con (as observed above)
Flakmeister, I want the federal government to spend less; not to spend more than they take in. Hillary could not do that.
Both sides are fucked up but my stripes lean to the side that wants less government, less spending, and less of what I earn. it can't be simpler than that.
Thanks for being civil.
No need to include Hillary, we all know she is just as bad as the rest of them.
He blew any cred he had when he mentioned Palin.... There is no fucking way in the world that Hillary could be worse than Palin....None. Hillary would have told Summers to go fuck himself....
I love SARAH. Hope she runs. I will definately vote for her. As to the "smart fuckers" on this website, they all live in their parents basements;) Need I say more........
Come on fuck head. Threaten the old people again. LOOOOOOOSSSSSSSSSSSSSSEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRR.
Good.
The Republican establishment screwed the pooch on this one and expected the freshmen to roll over. Boenher et al thought nobody was looking and it would be a good time to continue Obama's bloated budget. Sorry suckas.
The conservatives in the House need to continue the strategy of slightly trimming the budget withe every extension. Democrats don't have the balls to vote it down lest they be blamed for a shutdown. This at least gets the momentum moving towards cuts.
The don't need any Continuing Resolution.
They need to force the Senate to simply pass and produce the Budget in the first place.
The reconcilliation will then overcome the need for a Continuing Resolution.
Hope so.
BTW. Hope that includes Ben's printing presses :)

WEAPONS NECESSARY. How do you like that nickname ?
Anyways does anybody know if the below financial statement below is true or even mildly accurate>?
I want to QUADRUPLE my money by ANY MEANS NECESSARY.
1. Open Interest (which indicates a desire to Buy or Sell Index Options) normally stands at a few hundred contracts on any expiration date. A Contract must be created in order for it to be considered an Open Interest.
2. As of 9/19/11, the S&P 500 stood at 1204. Their are three types of Put Options, "At the Money" (strike price is 1204), "In the money" (strike price is above 1204), or "Out of the Money" (strike price below 1204).
3. A 1204 Strike price, October Option cost $4,000. A 1310 Strike Price is now valued at $17,000. That means with a 105 point drop in the S&P 500, the average Index Option increases 400% in value.
4. Remember, Open Interest on Put Options normally stands at less than 1,000 Contracts. Here is what October Put Options that Bet Against the S&P 500 look like for October, 2011:
Open Interest: Strike Price:
12,467 500
17,893 650
67,816 750
116,406 800
51,789 850
27,742 875
64,123 900
20,392 925
52,737 950
26,701 975
90,031 1,000
117,902 1,100
127,798 1,150
127,036 1,200
