"Due To The Extreme Volatility Some Market Analysts Foresee..."

Tyler Durden's picture

Helmet time.

From Oanda

Due to the extreme volatility some market analysts foresee could result in the coming days, OANDA fxTrade will not accept any trading activity from 6:00 AM EST until approximately 3:00 PM EST, on Sunday, June 17, 2012. OANDA believes the convergence of a major market event during off-market hours represents a potential trading risk and has taken this rare step to protect traders from excessive rate fluctuations.

Please note that during this halt in trading, you can still access your account details but no trading activity will be accepted. For this reason, OANDA strongly recommends that all traders consider minimizing currency exposures prior to the trading halt.

If you do intend to maintain open positions during this period, be aware that OANDA will hold exchange rates steady during the trading halt. However, when trading resumes, rates will immediately adjust to the current market rate and it is possible that the updated rate could result in a margin closeout if the price has moved significantly against your positions.

Therefore, it is your responsibility to ensure you have adequate funds in your account to prevent a margin closeout.

OANDA apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause.

For more information, please contact a Customer Service representative.

Best regards,

The OANDA team

What do you get when you mix counterparty and agency risk, and throw in some currency collapse fear for good measure? This.

My question is, if you are on the right side of this currency trade when things go tits-up, will you be able to liquidate your account?...If it is not in my physical possession I am very skeptical of redeeming the value of what I 'own', a la the Corzine effect.

Yes, moving from the lifeboat with ten holes in its bottom to the one with only seven holes, when an utterly seaworthy golden ocean liner is sailing within arm's reach, is such a rational move.

Not going to make any predictions but I personally think we have all ready seen most of that happen in Q1 Q2 2012. KWN London Trader article provided some interesting insight into what is currently going on in the paper vs physical markets. You can read it here essentially there is hardly any physical left for purchase, it is all being hoovered up as TPTB dump their naked shorts.

I do agree with you we could see a crash on the comex and it is wise to hold some currency, just adding info...

in Brazil, the cheapest price for ounce of silver is about $36, in granulated form. coins and bars are $60 - $100 per ounce. good business for someone with enough funds, to make and sell bars and coins. any crash in price of silver will be short lasting.

If people generally would think it suicidal to go long the S&P at this point (I don't think anyone here would say BUY S&P), then would it not be a smart move to short the S&P, long the VIX, pick up some profits and then buy silver on the dip? I guess I lack experience with sovereign and continent currency crisises but surely come Tuesday we will all be talking about how much profit one could have made if they had bought "XYZ" on Thursday (tomorrow)....

I'm just thinking about using this to my advantage.

I already have a huge stack of pm's. Gold and Silver are expected to tank like in 2008 - so how to save some fiat and buy the dip? Or is this really the end, like 2008 was really the end, and May 6th 2010 was really the end. I'm willing to gamble with some fiat to see if I can double it while the price of the metals crater and then place an order with APMEX before the FEMA camps open for business.

Greek election is utterly meaningless. Its a side show; its a road apple Newman. The Greeks wont form a governemnt, even if they could. Why take the sin upon their head when its all about Germany and whether they want to go big or go home. So far, all that Germany has done has centered around finding someone else to pin the blame on when they walk away. Greeks, Spaniards, Italians; Angie dont care ...

Wow, that's an interesting move. It could work out better since open positions will miss the volatility which could trigger sell orders or margin calls, now you either win or lose based on the market at the time they open - Wow. This could work against you as well obviously, leaving you in to take a bigger beatdown at open because a trigger didn't happen. This will lead to a huge gap or gap down scenario.

Of the two suspected winners of the Greek elections, its possible(probable) that regardless of who it is we end up with a gubmint that can't come together just like the first time. It seems as if the assumption is that we'll have a functioning government whether its lead by the Left or the Right, what happens if we actually end up at essentially the same place? Do we go throu another 4 weeks of speculation? Seems this is a possibility that would gum up the European works even further.

I'm just a Mainstreeter and I don't get it. How does a currency trader not potentially get fucked worse than his original risk assessment, when OANDA rejoins the real world.

This is the ultimate fuckin' margin requirement..

It is an honest message to it's account holders.  We expect bodies flying and are getting out for the weekend, and if you don't do what we do you can become one of the bodies.

And they give ample time to transfer your funds to a dealer that will trade the election if you're into gambling over of capital preservation.

Thanks for the reply. When I ask a question, it's usually treated as rhetorical.

Got it. They really don't want their account holders bleeding all over their brokerage. They'll forego the trans fees for 9 hrs, and save on having to do a fire and water damage renovation.

This could be a learning experience for me. Since there are only 2,129 people left on Earth who don't have a short interest in the EUR, it might make the currency markets interesting for the next two days.

I hope the US equity exchanges check their circuit breakers over the weekend.

holy shit, indeed!

it is at such times that we should reflect.  what are the origins of trading; is 'speculation' a bad thing; how do we, with as little disruption as possible, restore sound money; and Who is this God america pretends to serve...janus thinks it's time to pay a visit to the patriarchs of old -- abraham? (no, no trader he), maybe issac? again, nothing here but a near human sacrifice. jacob...that's the ticked -- jacob (later named israel) was the world's first recorded trader -- a cattle speculator.

before we review the story of jacob, i must share with you all a realization.  i thought i recognized sara eisen and her pal stephanie on bloomberg...took me long enough, but janus never forgets an intimate moment.  and, ladies, little did you know that our tete-a-tete-a-tete was recorded.  twasn't janus...he's a gentleman -- never tells and always denies...no denyin this, though:

http://cultfilms.tumblr.com/post/2830484768/a-clockwork-orange-record-shop-scene-the-old

back to the Bible:

the scene opens with esau.  good ole esau, salt of the earth simpleton, found himself hungry -- vamished, as it were.  it is never wise to expose yourself to the predations of a trader; and esau learned this lesson well.

esau was his father's favorite; a hearty man of the earth...a hunter...a big ole brawny sort o' fella.  God, however, did not esteem him so generously, "for God loved jacob and hated esau." yup, you read that right, God hates people, and sometimes for no good reason.  i can say this because scripture is lacking any sort of clue as to the source of this Most Holy Wrath.  esau was just a good-ole-boy bumbling around, salting his bread with the sweat of his brow -- as he was wont to do.

jacob, on the other hand, was a cunning, clever and cagey kinda guy...again, a trader.  jacob was always lookin for an angle, and he always felt his ideas and insights superior to all he encountered.  this sort of thing will not readily win friends and influence fathers.  rebecca (issac's wife) saw what God saw in this young whipper-snapper; and thought the whole mess of first-born=birth-right an antique notion of a dying world.  whether or not she was correct is beside the point; she and God were on the same side of the ledger -- and, in the end, that's all that counts (you do NOT want to trade against The Almighty).

chapter 2 -- a deal is a deal.

as i said, esau was a man of the earth...always hungry and never prepared to meet the challenge thereof.  whether or not jacob set the whole thing up is not for us to know; we do know that jacob was, at the time of esau's stinging hunger-pangs, well positioned in the broth business.  and so it was that they engaged in negotiation.

i don't have to tell you pagans that esau traded his birthright for a measly bowl of soup;as it was sort of a fulcrum of world history.  but i do have to tell you that esau never again considered the bargain -- thought it a joke or something.  jacob, a man of contracts and binding oaths, thought otherwise -- and so did rebecca.

when it came time for issac to go the way of all the world, rebecca arranged for esau to go out on a big hunt to honor his father's passing.

i'll cut to the chase here:

esau came back to find jacob receiving the birth-right blessing with goat-fur flecking his bare arms (in imitation of esau's brawn and swarthy sea of arm-hair)...it would be understating the case to say that esau was upset.  the whole matter touched off a sibling rivalry like the world has never seen -- at least not since issac and ishmael.  nothing good came of the situation, except for jacob...he leveraged a bowl of soup into the world's septer.  not a bad day at the bloomberg terminal, i say.

anyway, after this, jacob had to flee.  he set off to live with laban, his cousin (or possibly his uncle).  laban happened to house a couple of daughters; rachel and leah.

the story is awesome, and is not really the picture of 'meekness inheriting the earth'.  i will defer to brevity and say that jacob was tricked into marrying the ugly daughter (leah) and so set to speculating on cattle (the speckeled sort) so that laban would have no choice but cede the finer frauline to this young upstart.

the lesson here is: God loves a trader; and especially those possessing a nimble and curious mind.

i've got an incredible idea for restoring the gold/silver thing...i'll have to come back later; mrs. janus just arrived, and i've got to give her a few minutes of attention.

later speculators.

nope...cain settled that one all quick-like.  envy is a motha fucker.  you see, able offered the blood of treasured calves -- cain only fruits and veggies.  no blood/no bargain...or so it seems.

seth, the appointed, came thereafter.  cain, the cursed, roamed the earth defying all to kill him.

he later begat tubal-cain; and that does likewise matter.
