I've personally played with thermite - I've made my own crudest forms from powdered aluminum and rust mix and played with industrial quality as well. I've seen how a small pile smaller than a quarter will melt through in a thick cast iron pan in the matter of 2-4 seconds. I understand how the reaction rate will be affected by orders of magnitude thanks to micro-platelets of the reactants being welded at the molecular level. This is one of the few things in this world that could have caused the heat seen in the ruins, with local hotspots of metal still glowing above the combustion temperature of jet fuel even weeks after that ominous day.

You also forgot to mention the thermal inertia of the thousands upon thousands of tons of steel of the structure. Not only a few local I-beams were being warmed, as all of it was connected and the heat had to dissipate in the entire tower's structure. Of course, there would have been a local hotspot before the heat transferred into the rest, but with the jet fuel burning lower than its theoritical maximum and closer to a real-world 1200-1500 fahrenheit, I doubt the structure could even have reached a 1000 fahrenheit locally where the flames where licking the steel. The entire building was sponging it away from that location.

By the way, I'm pulling these numbers as an educated guess, not directly out of my ass. I might not be a structural engineer but as a physicist I understand enough about thermodynamics to comfortably affirm that jet fuel which does not even theoritically burn hot enough to soften steel has no chance at all to do so in a situation where a relatively small amount is trying to heat up such a megastructure.
