Escalation: Syria Says Turkish Jet Shot Down Was Over Syrian Territorial Waters

Tyler Durden's picture

The "Syrianna" story from this afternoon, which many were quick to label as merely a lot of diplomatic hot air and rhetoric, just turned uglier, after Syria not only did not officially apologize as Turkey PM Erdogan implied had happened previously for the shot down Turkish F-4 fighter jet, but instead turned the tables on Turkey, and gave itself an out for what is now a definitive military action. From Reuters:

The Syrian military said it shot down a Turkish military aircraft "over Syrian territorial waters" on Friday.

"Our air defences confronted a target that penetrated our air space over our territorial waters pre-afternoon on Friday and shot it down. It turned out to be a Turkish military plane," a statement by the military circulated on state media said.

The only question remains whether Syria's act was offensive or defensive. Naturally, its version is one of self-defense. Turkey obviously will claim it was in its right to be wherever the plane may be, and will say this was an act of provocation. Then NATO, read Hillary Clinton, will promptly step in, and make this a case in which Turkey was in its right and that Syria committed an act of aggression. From there, things will just escalate, and can potentially deteriorate to a far more troubling scale, because as we reminded earlier, Syria has recently become a major symbol for NATO vs the Russia-China axis:

Here is the rub: Turkey is a NATO member, and by definition the alliance will have to come to Turkey's aid if requested. Syria, however is not just any country as has been made quite clear over the past several months of UN impotence: it is a critical staging ground for both Russia (which has a very critical regional naval base in the city of Tartus) and China, and according to the Jerusalem Post, the three countries are in preparation to conduct the "largest ever" war game. As such Syria, already gripped by fierce local fighting, where just like in Egypt and Libya the presence of US-based flipflop on the ground can be smelt from across the Atlantic, is merely a symbol. The real implication is how far can little escalations push until finally the showdown begins, with NATO on one side and Russia and China on the other?

Ultimately, the key catalyst here may be something as simple as whether the pilot of the Turkish plane are alive or dead. BBC explains:

Given the breakdown in relations between the two countries over the Syrian conflict, this incident has the potential to provoke a serious crisis. When gunfire from Syrian forces crossed the Turkish border earlier this year, Ankara threatened a military response.

Much will depend on whether or not the Turkish pilots have survived. If not, public anger might push the government into some kind of punitive action against Syria.

Syria's response will also influence Turkey's reaction. A clear apology, and a statement that the shooting was unintentional, might be enough to assuage Turkish anger.

But then again, we do not know yet whether the aircraft were clearly in Turkish airspace or not. Initial Turkish reports that they came down eight miles from Syrian territorial waters suggests that they were, but Syria may claim otherwise.

At this point it is clear no apology will be forthcoming as Syria's official story is that Turkey had effectively committed an act of aggression against it. So it is up to the viability of the pilots. If dead, anyone who may have been shorting Brent into the weekend may have a nasty surprise come start of trading Monday.

I think someone commented on previous Syria / Turkey post that NATO defence won't apply if the plane was shot down over a foreign country (Since they entered Syrian airspace without authorization)?

Not sure how that applies, will need to look it up.

Quite, but even if the action is justified and no direct action cannot begin this event has been added to the mind of the public that SYRIA was the first to make a move by shooting down a foreign plane.  It is all part of the puzzle that will ease the public's mind some days in the future into accepting "Yes, maybe these are the real aggressors who deserve an ... 'intervention'".

Just in time for the weekend!!! What's weird... past news was saying the pilots are ok.

This Reuters article suggests Turkey + Syria are working together to find them.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/06/22/us-syria-crisis-idUSBRE85D0IS20120622

"But Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's initial comments and subsequent statement on the downing of the F-4 jet were measured in tone. He said Turkish and Syrian forces were working together to search for the two missing crew of the aircraft.

"As a result of information obtained from the evaluation of our concerned institutions and from within the joint search and rescue operations with Syria, it is understood that our plane was brought down by Syria," Erdogan's office said in a statement."

If the Syrians are publicly apologizing for it, how can it be a false flag?

Do you think the plane was a drone sent to get blown up, which is more like "suicide by cop" then false flag?

Or maybe the Syrians are confused, and admitted to blowing up the plane, even though they didn't fire on it?

Not confused. They have learned from Sadam Husseins mistake. Can you imagine what the world would be like today if sadaam said

Yup, we have weapons of mass destruction. please come and see how l33t we are, you can dismantle them if you want, but we really do have a "super gun" pointed as Isreal. We knew full well they'd bomb it before haji here could finish putting on his human cannon ball leotard and cape.

The tourism industry in Iraq would be better than Vegas. Snark aside. The western media actually ran footage of the  Iraq "super gun" for weeks after 9-11 and throughout the war.

Can any of you financial dudes write some derivatives on this? Here is the bet I want to take:

"The pilot of the Turkish F-4 was a female. The Syrians specifically targeted her, as her career in the military is forbidden by syrian custom. It is time for the west to unite and defend the rights of females to fly piloted military aircraft, because in less than 10 years there will not be any non-drone aircraft and women will have missed out on these opportunities because of a backwards nation like Syria. We are all Female Turkeys now!"

Poles Shocked as Facts of CIA Torture Site Continue to Emerge: CIA Sought Local Contractor to 'Build a Cage' for Detainees

by Jason Ditz, June 22, 2012 | antiwar.com

It has been more or less an established fact that the CIA operated a “black site” for detention and torture in Poland for several years, but as more and more data continues to emerge, the details are shocking local rights activists and have the current government scrambling to save face and distance themselves from the past administration’s crimes.

Polish prosecutors say that the investigation has turned up a number of new documents, including a signed agreement for the establishment of the torture site, signed by former Polish spymaster Zbigniew Siemiatowski. Ironically, the document did not include any signatures from the US side, “because they do not want to sign documents inconsistent with their own Constitution and international law.”

It has also emerged that the CIA hired a local contractor to “build a cage” for the black site. Sen. Jozef Pinior, who confirmed the existence of a work order for the cage, said it would have been “non-standard equipment” for a prison, but not for one in which torture was being carried out…

Ron Paul: Hands Off Syria

Before the US House of Representatives: Statement Introducing HR 5993, The Syria Non-Intervention Act of 2012 (17 hours ago)

Mr. Speaker: The Administration is marching toward another war in the Middle East, this time against Syria. As with the president's war against Libya, Congress has been frozen out of the process. The Constitution, which grants Congress and only Congress the authority to declare war, is once again being completely ignored.

The push for a US attack on Syria makes no sense, is not in our interest, and will likely make matters worse. Yet the Administration, after transferring equipment to the Syrian rebels and facilitating the shipment of weapons from Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States, has indicated that its plans for an actual invasion are complete.

This week there are even press reports that the Central Intelligence Agency is distributing assault rifles, anti-tank rocket launchers, and other ammunition to the Syrian opposition. These are acts of war by the United States government. But where is the authority for the president to commit acts of war against Syria? There is no authority. The president is acting on his own.

Today we are introducing legislation to prevent the administration from accelerating its plan to overthrow the Syrian government by assisting rebel forces that even the administration admits include violent Islamic extremists.

The bill is simple. It states that absent a Congressional declaration of war on Syria:

"No funds available to the Department of Defense or an element of the intelligence community may be obligated or expended for the purpose or which would have the effect of supporting, directly or indirectly, military or paramilitary operations in Syria by any nation, group, organization, movement, or individual."

This legislation is modeled after the famous Boland Amendments of the early 1980s that were designed to limit the president's assistance to the Contras in their attempt to overthrow the government of Nicaragua. Congress has an obligation to exercise oversight of the president's foreign policy actions and to protect its constitutional prerogatives. This legislation will achieve both important functions.

Operation "Turkey Shoot" -

Who woulda thought WW3 could be usered in by such a hackneyed, cliche'd, pre-fabricated, B-Grade movie drama such as this?

Hmmmm.... well anyone, I guess,  who has paid the slightest bit of attention to the history of phoney & fabricated US causi belli: Sinking of the Maine, sinking of the Lusitania, Gulf of Tonkin Incident,  Dominoes (no - not the pizza chain)falling in Vietnam, WMD in Iraq, krazies in Kabul, trrrrists in Triopoli, and (judging by the whipped-up anti-Iran frenzy) mad mullahs under the mattress....Zzzzz.......zzzzz....

You get the picture: THEY Want Their Cartoon War and They Will Have It. YOU - as dumb cattle - get to play a starring-role with a meat-grinder.      Heil Hillary!

Deescalation?:
"Turkish President Abdullah Gul says the jet fighter shot down by the Syrian army might have violated Syria's airspace."

If Nato decides that shooting down a Turkish military jet not in Syrian airspace was an act of war and opts for regime change in Syria, Russia and China will not lift a finger.  You will not hear a peep from either of them.

Has Turkey apologized yet for entering Syria air space with a fighter jet, threatening a neighboring nation?

This is the question journalists should be asking.

First off.......Syria doesn't owe anyone an apology. You think the US wouldn't do the same?

Secondly.....given the chart of the USO in long term double bottom territory you'd be an idiot to be short over the weekend regardless.

All of you USA haters will be sorry when Pax Americana is gone.  Wait until China or a China/Russia/Iran Axis is running the show with Syria and North Korea as their willing proxies, (as they already are).

There is bad. And then there is worse, much worse.  We have no good choices.  Grow up!  (And choose the side that you could possibly reform instead of being immediately killed or incarcerated).

Our enemies are counting on Fifth Columns like you represent to finally bring us down.  There is only one slim chance to restore the Republic and to save the world, and it resides within the United States, (thirty million or so of us).

Joining the discussion late, but I have it as Turkey +1.

Remember, just a few days ago, a Syrian pilot defected with a Mig-21 (23?) to Turkey. So now Turkey has an enemy aircraft to evaluate and play with to determine capabilities and weak spots, and Syria has a bunch of old iron on the bottom to the sea offshore some disagreed distance - but got even (more or less) for the loss of one of their aircraft.

Just too bad there does not seem to be any adults in that sandbox at the moment...
