Faster And Furiouser: Darrell Issa Strikes Back, Holds Eric Holder In Contempt

Tyler Durden's picture

After earlier none other than Obama stepped up and invoked an executive privilege, hoping the next step would be avoided, Darrell Issa just called the president and the AG's bluff:

  • HOUSE PANEL VOTES TO HOLD ERIC HOLDER IN CONTEMPT - BBG

But wait, there's more:

  • HOLDER CALLS CONTEMPT VOTE `EXTRAORDINARY' AND UNNECESSARY
  • HOLDER CALLS CONTEMPT VOTE `ELECTION-YEAR TACTIC'

... And now to give some illegal immigrant voters pseudo-amnesty. So aside from this soaring acrimony between Republicans and Democrats, the "Fiscal cliff" issue will be promptly resolved. Promise.

From Bloomberg:

A U.S. House committee brushed aside President Barack Obama’s claim of executive privilege and held Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress for failing to turn over documents related to a law enforcement effort to track guns to Mexican drug cartels.

In a party-line vote, the Republican majority on the House Oversight and Government Reform panel voted to approve the first contempt citation for a Cabinet member in 14 years. Republicans said Holder failed to comply with a subpoena for documents in the Fast and Furious gun operation, which allowed illegally purchased firearms from the U.S. to wind up in Mexico.

The 23-17 committee vote marks an escalation in a standoff that began last year between Republican lawmakers and the Obama administration. The full House would have to approve the measure before it could refer the case to the U.S. attorney in Washington to determine whether prosecution is warranted for failing to comply with a congressional subpoena.

The House panel is seeking documents describing internal Justice Department discussions about a February 2011 letter to lawmakers that Holder later said mistakenly contained incorrect information.

The Justice Department says it already has provided more than 7,600 pages of documents in the case.

This is the first time Obama has invoked executive privilege, according to the White House.

Executive Privilege

Executive privilege is a principle that says the executive branch can’t be forced by the legislative branch to disclose confidential communications when they would harm operations.

Documents responsive to the House panel’s subpoena relate to “sensitive law enforcement activities, including ongoing criminal investigations and prosecutions,” said Deputy Attorney General James Cole in a letter today to Republican Representative Darrell Issa of California, the chairman of the House panel.

Guns in Fast and Furious ended up “lost” and will turn up at crime scenes on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border for years, Holder told lawmakers last year.

Two of about 2,000 guns that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives allowed to be carried away were found at the scene of the December 2010 murder of U.S. Border Patrol agent Brian Terry in Arizona, according to a congressional report.

Holder has said he didn’t learn of the tactics in the operation until after it was the subject of news reports. Since then, he has banned the use of similar law enforcement methods.

Holder last year told a Senate hearing that he regretted a Feb. 4, 2011 letter the Justice Department sent lawmakers that indicated the ATF hadn’t “knowingly allowed” the tactics in the law enforcement operation to be employed. Information in the letter turn out to be inaccurate, he said.

my point, as i thought i had made it clear, is that both parties will use this issue, as they always do, whether its reagan/iran contra (nobody died there at the hands of illegal u.s. govt intervention im sure) or any other "scandal", to distract from the fact that they are both, yes both, as in democrats and republicans, destroying this country and destroying its foundations, and while doing so, looking for any issue to keep ones eyes away from their mutual, yes, mutual, participation in said dismantling. so the citizenry can now focus on fast and furious and our debt load grows fast and furious and our rights continue to be stripped fast and furious, and homeland security can continue to prepare fast and furious, for the eventual outcome......

Sure thing kito. You're "clear" alright as in telling people NOT to buy some gold and silver as insurance to protect themselves from the coming debt/USD implosion.

And you have the gall to talk about this country's foundations? That's sad and pathetic.

@bay---where did i say, and i have plenty of posts going back a while, where i said that one shouldnt by some gold and silver as insurance? perhaps after the dust clears, it may be used in a new global currency, i doubt it,  but nobody knows for sure........

my point has been that in a sudden deflationary/deleveraging collapse, as people like david stockman point out, along with others, physical hard cash will be king...i see every asset getting absolutely obliterated...destroyed...everything getting revalued to the dark ages.....way too many digital zeros out there buying up assets at way too high prices........

i dont see hyperinflation as a realistic scenario as many here see it....and hence the reason many tout gold.....the govt hasnt printed to the moon, they havent had a lsap in a year, the fed is clearly more calculating than many give them credit to be.....there is no hurried overt move by the fed to bring the usd down to 70 or 60 or 50...in fact, the fed knows full well that printing hasnt solved anything, so they are hesitant to do it again....and if they do, it will only be to keep up with any offset in lost digital zeros.....until its too late...........

When I first came on here I argued with Kito about his deflationary scenario. I still disagree with it. But it is his opinion, not an investment recommendation to buy or not buy anything. That's how I see it anyway.

kito, no offense, but your beloved US dollar has been getting creamed for 11 years in a row now by gold. ZIRP has killed the ability of people to hold cash and stay ahead of inflation. How do you miss this simple fact?

Gold is more correlated to interest rates than it is inflation.

Kucinich's comments referred to the constitutional method of settling a dispute between the executive branch and the legislative branch...namely by utilizing the judicial branch. I don't like it, but he was probably right that the courts should have been involved after Obama invoked privilege.

A lot of issues might never arise if these two branches didn't continually overstep their authority or delegate their constitutional responsibilities to others. At what point does our government cease being of value to this country? We are definitely seeing diminishing returns on our increasing costs.

Illegal immigrants can't vote.  Perhaps the author did not mean to call them "voters?"  So many times I find myself having to remind "Fox News Conservatives" of this apparently little known (to them) fact.

It's not about votes.  It's about keeping the cost of labor down.

Not sure what those down votes mean.  "I prefer to believe falsehoods" perhaps. Still: If one is to be persuasive, it helps to get one's facts right: Illegals can not vote. Period.

The relevant question is whether illegal immigrants do vote.  Here in Florida lots of dead people vote, and the state was sued by the US Justice Department for attempting to take 50,000 dead people off the voting rolls.  Pretty soon you will have to prove you purchased health insurance, and you have to show ID to get on an airline flight.  But you don't have to show ID to vote.  So do illegals vote?  Sure they do.  Only a fool thinks otherwise.

Lots of illegal things are allowed to happen.  "Linda Green" robosigns many thousands of fraudulent foreclosure documents.  Blatant fraud.  A statement of fact that no one denies. Anyone been charged or gone to jail?  No. $1.6 Billion of MF Global customer money goes "missing".  Anyone even been charged?  Nope.  Just last week Obama announced young illegal immigrants would no longer be deported.  Did Congress change the law?  No.

So stop with the naive claim that being illegal means it does not happen.  Open your eyes and look around.  These days laws are only selectively applied.  Do you feel lucky?  More importantly, got friends in high places?  The rule of law has become a joke.

Even legal immigrants cannot vote. You have to be a citizen. As a matter of fact, it states so plainly in most of the literature you get when you get your green card, and everytime you renew it. They spell out the draconian repercussions if they find that you voted. No one is going to take that risk just to get some jerk elected. Not a legal immigrant, and sure as hell no illegal immigrant cares that much to put his liberty at stake. So, how many people have we prosecuted for voter's fraud? Anyone got copies of mug shots?

Uh, are you sure about that? Do you live in a Mexican state like Texas? Do you really think there is no voter fraud? It takes both parties to tango. Business wants cheap labor but the left needs new victims. Mexicans are the new oppressed minority that they will save, much like the southern black Americans that their heirs formerly owned. There is no point in saving them unless they can vote!

Correct: vast majority of Americans do not know and do not care.

Please explain how this matters to anyone, unless they're a partisan scratching for an opening?  Of the guns held by the Mexican drug gangs, what portion do you figure came from Fast and Furious - 0.00001%?

America has real problems.  E.g., youth employment is at a 60-year low.  Kids who should be building their skills, and being productive, can't find work - and if they start a business, no one is around to buy their products.  China is now our #1 importer, and yet the yuan still isn't openly traded.  "Defense" costs 1050billion/year, is the largest discretionary item in the budget, and consumes the majority of income taxes (speaking of spreading weapons around). What's the House GOP doing about it?  Investigating Holder over some lost guns.

The House GOP and Ken Starr spent $40 million dollars investigating Clinton on Whitewater - and found nothing.  So they had to go after Clinton on the one thing they knew they could scratch him with; cheating on his wife.  But that's the only way Republicans know how to get anywhere,: it's not on who's the most productive, it's on who you know and how you can make other people look bad.

Cool thing was, Clinton beat the House Republicans like the family mule, despite being under investigation; just stomped right over their faces.  Here's to Obama having learned enough, third year in, to do the same!

Again, please explain how this matters to anyone?

I think you might be surprised.  People who like owning guns see Fast and Furious as an excuse to cut back on rights by cracking down on dealers who legally sell them.  Making guns harder to buy = make guns harder to own.  Chew away at the periphery.  One dead border agent was bad.  A couple of hundred dead Mexican nationals is bad too, and not all of them were drug gang members.

If you have followed the facts of this case, lots of people tried to point out what was wrong with this cluster of an operation from the dealers to the agents to their Mexican counterparts.  They were all stymied by the ATF and (apparently) Justice who wanted the guns to be let loose in Mexico.

I don't disagree with your assessment of the other problems and sure, Congress has allowed itself to be turned into a collective potted plant.

Is the fact that Starr's Whitewater investigation found nothing a reason to give Holder a pass on Fast and Furious?

How about giving the White House a pass on the national security leaks?  Those asst AGs certainly don't have any conflicts of interest, right?

    Totally agree.

I remember when Lehman happened and there was some poll about the dangers of "Investments Banks". And all i could think is up until the Lehman moment probably 10% of Americans knew the Company existed, and less than 5% knew the difference between an "Investment Bank" and a "Bank Holding Company".

Despite our protests, most Americans really do get the government they deserve.
