Is The Fate Of Mitt Romney's Presidential Campaign In The Hands Of A Reuters FOIA Request?

Tyler Durden's picture

It appears the GOP candidates are dropping like flies: first that one crazy guy, then Cain, and now... Mitt Romney? According to a Boston Globe article, paraphrased by Reuters, the GOP frontrunner (or is that second after Gingrich now: nobody really knows any more), spent $100,000, not of his own money but state funds, to "replace computers in his office at the end of his term as governor of Massachusetts in 2007 as part of an unprecedented effort to keep his records secret. When Romney left the governorship of Massachusetts, 11 of his aides bought the hard drives of their state-issued computers to keep for themselves. Also before he left office, the governor's staff had emails and other electronic communications by Romney's administration wiped from state servers, state officials say. Those actions erased much of the internal documentation of Romney's four-year tenure as governor, which ended in January 2007. Precisely what information was erased is unclear." Odd: almost as if he had something to hide... Yet something tells us the other side of those emailed correspondences will still be there: alive and kicking, somewhere on the archived servers of Bain Capital, and a few prominent health insurance companies (and of course Goldman Sachs, because Goldman Sachs is everywhere). Naturally, one would need a subpoena to get those. And for that one would need a reason to assume something is illegal. Luckily, wiping your hard disks while a servant of the people is perfectly normal in a banana republic. Now just who does Ron Paul have to murder in broad daylight while having sex with Snooki before the general media finally decides he is worthy of a shot at this whole farce?

Reuters with more:

Republican and Democratic opponents of Romney say the scrubbing of emails - and a claim by Romney that paper records of his governorship are not subject to public disclosure - hinder efforts to assess his performance as a politician and elected official.

As Massachusetts governor, Romney worked with a Democrat-led state house to close a budget shortfall and signed a healthcare overhaul that required nearly all state residents to buy insurance or face penalties.

Massachusetts' healthcare law became a model for Obama's nationwide healthcare program, enacted into law in 2010. As a presidential candidate, however, Romney has criticized Obama's plan as an overreach by the federal government.

Massachusetts officials say they have no basis to believe that Romney's staff violated any state laws or policies in removing his administration's records.

As for the "cleansing" apparently Romney was smart enough to do what not even 27-year old Goldman Sachs wunderkind and the man who singlehandedly (because the SEC has yet to name a second perpetrator at Goldman) concocted the MBS mortgage fraud scheme, Fab Tourre, thought of doing when he left his hard disk "just lying around."

Romney's spokesmen emphasize that he followed the law and precedent in deleting the emails, installing new computers in the governor's office and buying up hard drives.

However, Theresa Dolan, former director of administration for the governor's office, told Reuters that Romney's efforts to control or wipe out records from his governorship were unprecedented.

Dolan said that in her 23 years as an aide to successive governors "no one had ever inquired about, or expressed the desire" to purchase their computer hard drives before Romney's tenure.

The cleanup of records by Romney's staff before his term ended included spending $205,000 for a three-year lease on new computers for the governor's office, according to official documents and state officials.

In signing the lease, Romney aides broke an earlier three-year lease that provided the same number of computers for about half the cost - $108,000. Lease documents obtained by Reuters under the state's freedom of information law indicate that the broken lease still had 18 months to run.

As a result of the change in leases, the cost to the state for computers in the governor's office was an additional $97,000.

The 'shredding' was not just electronic:

State officials and a longtime Romney adviser have acknowledged that before leaving office, Romney asked state archives officials for permission to destroy certain paper records. It is unclear whether his office notified anyone from the state before destroying electronic records.

In other words, the US taxpayers paid to make sure nobody could ever build a civil or, heaven forbid, criminal case against Romney.

We can't wait for the next GOP debate, or whatever that ex-"999" circus is called nowadays, something tells us the topic of tampering with evidence, always a sensitive one for politicians as they all have done it at some point, will be rather prominent.

As for Romney, his fate may soon be sealed, or unsealed as the case may be, by a Reuters FOIA:

Officials have said the details of Romney's request to remove paper records, such as what specific documents he wanted to destroy, could be made public only in response to a request under the state's freedom of information law. Reuters has filed such a request.

One wonders how fast the turnaround on such a request is, and just how extensive the black out redactions will be.

One of RP's strongest bases is military, and that was not true for the last victim. I think there would be a considerably larger shitstorm triggerred by an assasination, though you wouldn't see it covered on TV.

If RP gets the nod, he should pick his running mate very carefully. And definitely not allow it to be anyone the party suggests to him.

There are plenty of new candidates that could come in if Newt and Mitt fail.  Palin, Buchanan...hell, even Dan Quayle could test the waters.  All of them would be infinitely more electable by the sheeple than Ron Paul.

If Dr. Paul did manage to get past all of that and be elected president, the Federal Reserve would put a bullet in his head, just like the last guy to challenge them.

There never was any "last guy" who challenged the Fed --- that tripe about Kennedy, silver certificates and US Notes is nothing but an absurd urban legend of recent invention that has only spread due to the internet, and has NO basis in any real monetary history whatsoever; this idea that Kennedy "took on the Fed" simply reflects a gross misunderstanding and ignorance of mundane monetary policies and formalities of the 1960s, and has no foundation in fact.  Please look into the subject further.

Also, I think Ron Pauls discussion of the gold standard is not because he disagrees with the actions taken Nixon shock, just the profligate spending that was the debilatating side effect of amputating the limb such that the foriegn dollar holders could not gangreen the USAs gold.

it is an excellent metaphor for the current Nixon shock which is Europe (1st world) using US dollars (IMF) to recapitalize their banks.

I first voted for RP for president in 1988 when he ran as a Libertarian.  I wrote him in in 2008 when I couldn't stomach the candidate that the Libertarians ran... but I'm not so sure I want him as president now... and if he ends ups there, I think it will only be BECAUSE that's what the TPTB want.  The crash will "happen on his watch", I fear.

I've heard that tripe before and you know what...he's prepared for it.  He's been speaking out against the oligarchy for his whole career if you think it matters now you're mistaken.

And if you're going to say they'll blame it on him in two years...well Obama's gotten a pass for 3 already and things are still getting worse.

Anyone that supports him has already put up with the megapropaganda machine so what will more years mean to them?  Nothing.

I too have read him, 'wrote him in' in 2008,  But It doesn't matter now if he wins.   We(and everybody) is going to crash.   Peak Oil Kids  Nothing is going to stop that. But It would be REALLLLL important for him to run now though.    What Ron Paul has done is education.   His speeches, his articles,  has had a big effect on the people that will be in whatever gov comes along next.

His campaign would be one of Forcing The Topics.   They would HAVE to be carried by the MSM (however slanted they will be presented with).   His words is effecting people.

That is what Ron Paul has become.  Not that he can solve 'IT"   But he is informing millions of what 'IT' is.    And people are listening to different voices for the first time in over a decade.

The crash is going to happen no matter what. The only thing of any significance at this point is who is at the helm during the crash to formulate the way forward. You are either going to enjoy the freedom from the  death of corrupt and parasitical  financial system, resulting in decentralization of money and  power, and return of the Constitution from Exhile.

Or a One world currency, forever centralizing and cementing the power of the financial elite in a  New World Order of hellish proportions far worse than the corrupt system that collapsed.

The system is going to collaspe. The system SHOULD collaspe.

And the only President of any significance in the next 100 years is the one who is in office during that collaspe and gets to decide what replaces it.

I hope we have someone like Ron Paul in the Presidency  to show the people the way forward when the inevitable collapse happens.

I agree with you... and I figured my post might be misunderstood.  I know we are going to collapse.  And I agree... we SHOULD.  there is NO SOLUTION short of collapse.  My fear (and my point)... RP being elected president could be nothing other than him being set up as the Fall guy.  Of course our banking oligarchs know what the end game of our monetary system is.  Our credit/debt monetary system requires debt to increase until such a point when the economy can no longer support the interest on the debt... then we get collapse.  But they will work tirelessly to propagandize against this reality as they want to control what comes next.  We can't know the truth.  The Kyle Bass video from a couple fo days ago... he basically says that if we do what need to do, the person who is at the helm becomes a persona non grata.

Tue, 12/06/2011 - 00:12 | 1949716 GoodMorningMr.V...
GoodMorningMr.VanRumpoy...'s picture

If the President does what we need to do before the collapse, yes for a time he will become a persona non grata. The banking oligarch’s impressive propaganda machine will assault him 24/7. It will be painful transition and the people wouldn’t understand why we are switching when things doesn’t s seem that bad or bad enough.

If he does what's needed to be done to prevent going through another 100 year cycle of credit explosion based on a debt monetary system during or after the collapse, he will be fine.

Because the whole thing dies. The propaganda, the media control apparatus is dead on the vine. They don't pay the apparatus in silver, gold Pmetals. The huge corporations that are apart aren't going to be able to ween themselves off of short/long-term debt financing and switch entirely cash/gold reserves.  Even if CNN had large amounts of cash on their balance sheets they require debt based finance for their day to day operations they are too big and dependent at this point to change.

GINGRICH: But let me make a deeper point. There's a core thing that's wrong with this whole city. You said earlier that it would take too long to open up American oil. We defeated Nazi Germany, fascist Italy, and Imperial Japan in three years and eight months because we thought we were serious.

If we were serious, we would open up enough oil fields in the next year that the price of oil worldwide would collapse. Now, that's what we would do if we were a serious country. If we were serious...

Mon, 12/05/2011 - 22:54 | 1949476 TheAkashicRecord
TheAkashicRecord's picture

//If we were serious, we would open up enough oil fields in the next year that the price of oil worldwide would collapse.//

The people who think this guy is smart confuse me.

[The U.S. would have to increase field production by more than double current production to become oil independent by increasing domestic production to 14.8 Mbopd. Even peak production in 1970 of 10,000 bopd would only meet 68% of current crude oil consumption. To bring about a collapse in world oil prices, as Mr. Gingrich suggests, would mean increasing U.S. production by substantially more than this.

Maximum daily production from Prudhoe Bay Field, the largest in the United States, was 2.0 million bopd in 1988 (http://www.aspo-usa.com/archives/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&…). Mr. Gingrich suggests that we can find more than six additional Prudhoe Bay-sized fields in one year. Prudhoe Bay was discovered in 1968, did not begin production for 11 years, and did not reach peak production until 20 years after its discovery. But Mr. Gingrich thinks that there are many Prudhoe Bay fields waiting to be found that can be at explored, developed and brought to peak production in one year.

It is difficult to imagine that Mr. Gingrich could be unaware of these fundamental facts and probabilities. If so, he must be placed in a lower category than Rick Perry and Herman Cain, who simply could not remember what they presumably knew. The only other possibility is that he knows the reality of oil supply and is misleading to the American people in order to gain support for a positive “can do” message. Either way, it is clear that Mr. Gingrich does not have a realistic understanding of the oil exploration and production business.]

Yup. You say those things when you want the backing of the oil-industrial complex. All we ever do is burn it faster if the price even drops a penny, feeding the vicious cycle. And we are totally foreign oil-dependant despite having had two presidents who made their money in big oil (Bush family values). But we tax-subsidize them to drill so that we can pay taxes again at the pump.

Tue, 12/06/2011 - 00:34 | 1949768 Dave
Dave's picture

Well, taxes are put there by politicians not oil companies. May I remind you oil is bid for on the COMEX like other commodities. Just so you know, as of 2 Dec. there are 1,993 rigs drilling in the US. I run one of them. Can't say which one or for whom because I'll get fired. But, it's like this. Average cost to drill and complete one of our wells on land is +/- $20 million. This does not include the infrastructure necessary for production. Currently we are at almost 100% rig utlization. Imports remain the same. So, tell me how the hell you think we're going to reduce them that quickly? You don't know jack shit about this business.

Exactly.  The people who fail to understand this amaze me.  If you want to crash the price, slap a massive tarrif on imports and incentivize car companies to build NG and electric cars.  A price crash will not come from expanding the supply of OIL, there's way too much demand.

With the increase in campaign funds comes a shadow increase in attack capabilities.  These are hits, researched and financed by one or more of the other douchebags' backers.  These sorts of tactics become a possibility only when they have tremendous resources at their command.  Increasingly, campaigns end not at the polls, but at ad hoc media conferences gathered to hear a tearful admission from former candidates.  They go down in flames.

I believe this campaign is one battlefield among many that the elites are using now to fight out the endgame, like dogs.  They're not necessarily fighting for the election in Nov 2012 as much as the "hearts and minds," so to speak.

I use war terminology advisedly.

Tyler: (Reuters) - BP Plc accused Halliburton Co of destroying evidence that the oilfield services company did inadequate cement work on the Gulf of Mexico oil well that blew out last year, and asked a federal judge to punish Halliburton. The accusation, in a BP court filing, raises the stakes ahead of a trial, expected in late February

TOKYO, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- The operator of Japan's quake damaged Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant on Monday confirmed that radioactive water from the plant may have leaked into the ocean, sparking fresh concerns about the nation's ongoing nuclear crisis.

Asia's largest utility firm Tokyo Electric Power Company, also known as Tepco, said that around 45 tons of water contaminated with radioactive substances caesium and iodine had likely run into the ocean from a gutter system into which water had leaked from a condensation unit.

Junichi Matsumoto, a general manager at Tepco, said the leaked water contained 16,000 becquerels per liter of radioactive cesium 134 and 29,000 becquerels of cesium 137, surpassing government safety limits by 267 and 322 times respectively.

hey...good question. But rather than go through the ownership (gets involved as they are public companies) I simply observe their douible standard in reporting (most is not reporting but opinion presented as reporting).

The big questin in the US is not DEM or REP it is the Big media's destructive bias. And the bias slanted 90% to left wing (DEM party).

Left wing? What is left wing? All party turned fascist, which is right wing.  Left wing is as extinct as the dodo.

The whole legislative body has only gone more and more right for decades.  Right now Ronald Reagan, the fascist fucktard idiot, would be the leftest most liberal in town if he was alive and in washington.  Well aside from maybe Bernie Sanders and Kucinich.

But even then left-right is idiotic, as it doesn't really mean anything.  Are we enacting fascist corporate policies or not?

Here's a clue

We have a fascist Judicial

We have a fascist Legislative

We have a fascist Executive

...and they're only gaining speed towards deeper fascism, on both 'sides'.

Thus we are RIGHT WING CONTROLLED, even if it is a democrat in name only in charge of the executive.  Which of course is only 1 of the 3 sections.

You can be a democrat or a republican and be both a fascist and a socialist.  Fascist against the people, socialist with the banksters...except for food stamps, and a couple of other pathetic giveaways that don't amount to shit.

Both parties are doing this on a regular basis.  So what if the democrats are using the republican playbook now, it's now the playbook of both.

Here's another clue, every candidate on the right for president is a complete fucktard, not worthy of a single vote, except Ron Paul, who is also a fucktard, but less of one.  The rest are traitors, but somehow you missed that.

Sure so is Obama, but with all your fingerpointing at NerObama, you forgot to check your own house was full of maggots.

Plus the combined IQ of those idiot candidates you mentioned is two.

You seriously think it's the fault of others for ones own actions?

Good luck finding the truth, you're still about 99 percent away from it, but you seem to have the will.

jmc -Ummm...of course it does depend on one's definition...however...fascism has ALWAYS been a left wing concept. Just because there was violence associated with the 30's/40's fasiscm of Germany and Italy does not mean that it was "right wing". Although the Big Media has always associated European facsism with "right wing". Indeed it was not....well maybe to the right of communism ...whicxh was prevalent and vying for power in Italy at that time.

Since the 60s that has been the assumption, and taught in Universities etc.... Indeed if one defines facsism as "governemnt = business"...parastals etc...then that is exactly the definition of left wing.

The Left has alweays marketed themselves as "for the people" ....but of course it ahs always been "for the fascsists and friends of facsists".

Europe today = perfect example. Fannie and Freddie, which can be said to have encouraged and indeed facilitated the credit bubble (housing...which of course leads to greater bubbles ....Equites...illeagal immigration, etc..)...not to mention the CRA Act (on steroids under Billary)....these programs are clearly left wing policies...indeed facsist policies.

Couldn't of happened to a better jobs destroyer.  Hey Mitt, if you double up on the magical underwear, perhaps it'll all go away.  Remember though, don't make the shit hole bigger, that's blasphemy.

I still can't believe after all these fucktards, the republicans still can't even try Ron Paul.  Yes he's an idiot like the rest, but in a different way.  Because of this, and some key positions he holds, he is heads and tails better than the rest...even if he is incompetent about economics, and confuses oligarchy with founding fathers on a regular basis...guess what so do the rest, but in a Keynesian or other way.

But there's still time for the republicans to for once not be a complete collective bunch of dipshits.   Just once.  (and remember Ron Paul isn't a democrat, thus that is why I'm not skewering them, because only republicans control Ron's fate.)

Ron Paul just needs a few more fucktards out, and then he can swoon us with oligarchical Austrian monetary ideology and try to convince us it's what the founding fathers wanted.  WRONG.  But at least we know he'd do a few good things before completely screwing the pooch emanating from his own sophistry induced failings.

The president is just a shoe shiner for TPTB. Mitt, the country club republican Romney, does not stand a chance to the American people anyway. I hate to say it, but Obama will get a second term and really-does anybody think the world would be different if another candidate were elected.

As Massachusetts governor, Romney worked with a Democrat-led state house to close a budget shortfall and signed a healthcare overhaul that required nearly all state residents to buy insurance or face penalties.

Supporting a law requiring Mass citizens to buy health insurance should have been enough to keep him out of the GOP race.

SOoo... you're saying bullish on Iron Mountain and other paper shredding/archiving companies?  Maybe bullish on neodynium magnets?  Bullish on multi-formatting hard drive software?

What are the ticker symbols I need to buy?

I would expect other politicians out there will try to haul ass and do the samething before this "loophole" is blocked.

Romney is about as corrupt as they get.  If this guy makes President, you can GUARANTEE  a war with Iran, so they can use it as a cover for the final takeover.  He is a tool of pure corporate evil.
