Follow The Iowa Caucuses Live

Tyler Durden's picture

The buck stops here and the votes begin: starting at 7 pm CST, more than 100,000 voters - only a small percentage of the state's electorate - are expected to gather across the state at more than 800 public spots, and cast their votes for their GOP candidate with only three: Paul, Romney and for some unknown reason, Santorum expected to have a fighting changes. Results should begin coming in within a few hours. For those following the caucus for the only important reason: to see how Ron Paul does, or is allowed to do, we have the following live feeds for our readers' disposal.

CNN:

Fox News:

Politico:

Live results can be seen here as they trickle in:

And some more on the Iowa caucus from Reuters as the GOP primary kicks off officially:

Republican candidates crisscrossed Iowa in a last-minute bid for support on Tuesday ahead of the first contest of the 2012 U.S. presidential campaign, and at least three - Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Ron Paul - appeared to have a shot at victory.

Iowa's caucuses are known more for weeding out candidates than picking the future president. Finishing in the top spot Tuesday night could provide a big boost in the state-by-state battle to select a Republican challenger to Democratic President Barack Obama in the Nov. 6 election.

Most of the candidates have topped opinion polls at one point in the volatile Republican race that until recently centered on televised debates rather than on-the-ground campaigning.

Polls show Romney, the favorite of the party's business wing, in a tight race with Paul, a U.S. congressman from Texas with libertarian views, and Santorum, a former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania who hopes to consolidate Iowa's large bloc of Christian conservatives. Romney is a former Massachusetts governor.

Many voters remain undecided. The unusual caucus process adds an element of unpredictability. Voters in Iowa gather in public meetings at hundreds of sites around the state such as schools, libraries and churches, listening to speeches touting the various candidates before casting their ballots.

"I'm kind of on the fence. A name that's been kind of sticking out, along with everyone, is Rick Santorum. We're not a hundred percent for sure yet," Des Moines resident Jason Harpineau said just hours before the start of the caucuses.

...

Sparsely populated Iowa only yields 28 delegates of the 1,143 needed to lock up the Republican presidential nomination, and those delegates aren't actually awarded for months after Tuesday's caucuses.

Santorum hopes to emerge as the latest conservative alternative to Romney.

Largely consigned to the margins for most of the race, Santorum is now fending off attacks from his rivals who see him as a new threat. On Tuesday, he said Paul was behind a wave of automated phone calls that question his anti-abortion and pro-gun credentials.

"Ron Paul is disgusting," Santorum told Fox News reporters.

A win by Paul would help him extend his minimal-government stance and broaden the appeal of his campaign outside his zealous base, many of them independents, disaffected Democrats and younger voters.

Well, one could argue that the election has already been rigged big time, via the MSM. The only question is, if the majority of the populace says "fuck you" to the MSM, will they also rig the vote counting, and how much?

Consider the low voter participation.... if they were to do it, it shouldn't be that hard..... if the populace will buy it, is another question.

After Fukushima the anti-nuke crowd is shocked to hear RP isn't anti-nuke too, but as a Libertarian he says let the markets decide. So with the average nuke plant generating power for 50yrs and requiring storage of radioactive waste for 500,000 yrs would anyone invest if it weren't fir the subsidies? Even Treasuries would look like a better investment!

RP isn't anti-nuke too, but as a Libertarian he says let the markets decide. So with the average nuke plant generating power for 50yrs and requiring storage of radioactive waste for 500,000 yrs

The insane requirement to hold spent fuel rods at each nuclear facility is due to federal regulation. In Europe they recycle the waste. Some goes toward industrial and medical use. The rest is mixed with a Pyrex like material until it is only as radioactive as was the original uranium ore. The Pyrex blocks are then sequestered underground. Problem solved.

Wed, 01/04/2012 - 00:42 | 2031751 geekgrrl
geekgrrl's picture

The markets decided back in the '50s that nuclear power had too much risk and potential liability. It was (and still is today) the fed gov who limits liability in the event of a nuclear disaster. Without backing from the federal government, those plants would close so fast it would shock anti-nuke folks.

One question for folks who have studied libertarian theory more than me: what prevents a tragedy of the commons type situation? Where is the pricing mechanism to inhibit companies from say, destroying groundwater sources as is now happening with fracking? I don't see that the market cares or has a mechanism for stopping bad behavior like this. In fact, it seems to encourage externalizing costs to the extent that lower prices increases demand, and those who can most effectively externalize the costs will have the lowest price.

Honest, free market adjudication is the answer.  Government courts and regulators are beholden to the polluting class.

Also see my post immediately above in which I detail how federal regulations block effective free market solutions to the nuclear waste problem.

Wed, 01/04/2012 - 02:26 | 2031996 geekgrrl
geekgrrl's picture

I agree entirely that government courts and regulators are beholden to the polluting class, but I don't see a mechanism for inhibiting bad behavior under libertarianism. What you suggest is a partial technical solution to a very thorny problem, one that is largely beyond human comprehension given the time frames involved.

If Paul does indeed demand private insurance (no government backstop) then nuclear is going down, immediately. They are in business to make money, not to expose themselves to massive liabilities.

Do you know if Rothbard or any of the other Libertarian writers have addressed the tragedy of the commons? I'd really like to see what they propose. I've looked at environmental problems in some depth, and came to the conclusion years ago that ecofascism is not the answer. It's simply not workable to dictate to people how they should live their lives. At the same time, there are many ecologically damaging projects that are sensible from an economic standpoint (assuming externalizing costs) but from an ecological standpoint, they make no sense and are unworkable. I haven't found a solution and am wondering if there is a solution in libertarianism.

Thanks for asking these questions. I have not gone as deeply into it as you have, but it does appear to be a conundrum. It is the only reason I can justify regs. Fouling the environment for money does seem like it is harmful to life and/or a property crime though. Keeping it clean seems to me to be a kind of "defense" for the community.

I just wish I could find some answers. I perused the links Crockett provided, and as far as I can tell, Rothbard seems to believe in the principle of "first come, first served." Meaning that if you are in a place before a polluter, then you have grounds to stop the pollution, but if you come along after the pollution is already present, then you have to live with it because their rights are superior. That is a recipe for a race to the bottom. That is what the Tragedy of the Commons is all about.

I don't find this to be a satisfactory solution, and if this is the best Libertarians can do, I'm less than impressed.

I'll bite.  Name one accomplishment Ron Paul has had in his 25 year congressional career.  What laws did he write and get passed?  Has he been an effective advocate for his positions?  Federal spending has done what since Paul was elected?  Gone up rather substantially I believe.  The Fed has never been reigned in which Paul claims to want desperately.  You tell me, did Paul vote no on Graham Leach Bliley which is considered the root of all evils among the anti Wall Street crowd?  What has he led?  Where is his executive experience?  Running a small OB/GYN clinic and a 25 year legislative career in which he has no tangible accomplishments doesn't make me expect him to be able to oversee a $3.6 trillion government nor does it make me believe that he will be able to push through incredible, and needed, rollbacks of Federal authority within the balanced powers framework of our government.  Can Ron Paul rally 535 bitterly divided legislators to a policy goal?  The answer is probably no.

And that is before you consider racist newsletters, a tact to elaborate conspiracy theories, nonsense about Iran not being a threat to anyone with a nuclear weapon, Israel funding Hamas and approving of it, etc., etc.

Wed, 01/04/2012 - 04:53 | 2032137 akak

Funny how other nations building nuclear weapons (India, Israel), or even a "rogue" nation acquiring nuclear weapons (North Korea), or another with an unstable government and radicalized Moslem society (Pakistan), did not in each case present the dire, existential threat to the USA that an Iranian nuclear bomb supposedly does.

The fact that NONE of those other nations host any significant oil fields, I am sure, had and has absolutely nothing to do with the apparent lack of threat that THEIR nuclear weapons pose to the USA.

Wed, 01/04/2012 - 09:55 | 2032414 bruce wayne
bruce wayne's picture

You completely balked on naming a single accomplishment of Ron Paul's in 25 years.  And that's the man you wish to be President.  Ron Paul, as a leader, is no better than the person who is currently in the Oval Office.  He has no executive experience and has never shown any ability to rally support for legislation he has authored.  The man would be wholly incapable of instituting the reforms you seek given our government's structure.  Presidents don't have unlimited power to shape things as they see fit.  Paul would have to bring together a coalition of people including Democrats to get things done.  I don't think Ron Paul can manage that.  Everyone's response to these inquiries is, "Ron Paul is great.  He is our only viable option.  You must vote for Paul."  It is an almost messianic level of support from a small minority of the population.  He doesn't even have support among conservatives, let alone Republicans at large.  How come several free market conservatives who opposed TARP from the beginning, Dodd-Frank, have pushed for the privitization of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, rejected the auto bailouts and have warned the new GM won't work, hate Bernanke and the Fed's policies, and advocate for smaller government won't even consider voting for Ron Paul?:

In a hotly-contested Republican race, it appears that only about half of Paul's supporters are Republicans. In Iowa, according to Rasmussen, just 51 percent of Paul supporters consider themselves Republicans. In New Hampshire, the number is 56 percent, according to Andrew Smith, head of the University of New Hampshire poll.

The same New Hampshire survey found that 87 percent of the people who support Romney consider themselves Republicans. For Newt Gingrich, it's 85 percent.

So who is supporting Paul? In New Hampshire, Paul is the choice of just 13 percent of Republicans, according to the new poll, while he is the favorite of 36 percent of independents and 26 percent of Democrats who intend to vote in the primary. Paul leads in both non-Republican categories.

"Paul is doing the best job of getting those people who aren't really Republicans but say they're going to vote in the Republican primary," explains Smith. Among that group are libertarians, dissatisfied independents and Democrats who are "trying to throw a monkey wrench in the campaign by voting for someone who is more philosophically extreme," says Smith.

Paul tops the field when pollsters ask Republicans which candidate they are certain not to support. "When you ask people which candidate they are least likely to vote for, Ron Paul is pretty high, because most Republicans here really don't want to vote for him," says Smith. "His support is not coming, by and large, from Republican voters."

What's true in New Hampshire is also the case in South Carolina, where Paul is 28 points behind Gingrich in the most recent Palmetto Poll. "The economic positions of libertarians are popular here, but Paul's positions on gay marriage, abortion, illegal immigration, and national defense are all antithetical to South Carolina's conservative culture," says Woodard. "About 13 percent of the GOP primary electorate are military veterans, and they don't want to bring everyone home. We have a strong pro-life network, and it is knit into the Republican Party at its roots, and the amendment declaring marriage to be something between a man and a woman won with over 70 percent of the vote in South Carolina."

Couple percent.   Flavor of the month, no staying power...like Bachman, Perry, Cain and Gingrich before him.  It's all "Anti-Romney" in my book.

Paul is the only candidate that has shown steady growth and not wild swings.

I meant ammunition in a figurative sense. Really I did.

"Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition!"

Lieutenant Howell Maurice Forgy, USN (ChC), serving in the heavy cruiser USS New Orleans (CA-32) during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, is credited with coining the phrase. Lieutenant Forgy saw the men of an ammunition party tiring as they labored to bring shells to the antiaircraft guns. Barred by his non-combatant status from actively participating in keeping the guns firing, Lieutenant Forgy decided that he could add his moral support to the ammunition bearers through words of encouragement, and so patted the men on the back and said, "Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition!"

His words were later popularized in a song written by Frank Loesser and performed by Kay Kyser and his orchestra.

30% Conservative who want the status quo

40% Whatever who will decide by who looks best at debate time

You obviously do not understand that every candidate besides Paul would slap Obama on the back and say, "Good job, Barry, on signing that NDAA bill!  It is so important that we be able to arrest, detain, and imprison/torture Americans for no reason!  Thank you for hellping to save Americans from all of those evil terrorists!"

The ONLY one who spoke out publicly against NDAA is Paul!  That makes all the rest of them a-okay with decimating the Constitution even further and embracing tyranny....for YOU, not them.

So....exactly HOW would they be any different than Obama in the MOST important issue of FREEDOM and civil liberties?

After all, it's kind of hard to benefit from those Republican tax cuts and loosened EPA regulations from your FEMA camp cell.

Without FREEDOM, we have NOTHING!  Without freedom, America becomes Amerika.

Flipping through Dish's channels and landed on MSNBC's GE's and Comcast's version of Ellen DeGeneres, speaking, of course about Racist Madcow. On the bottom banner they were showing results for the first 1% tabulated and it went like this:

Sanitarium 26%

Huntsman 0%

Perry 10%

Romney 18%

... and then repeated the banner over and over and over and over ... infinity ..

The farking bitchez's producers didn't even bother to flash Ron Paul  in the Banner.

... guessing the zero brain twit dweebs at MSNBC (did you know every GI and every piece of hardware in the multi theater-ed Globalony War on Terror has at least one MS CE license installed. MS also own 10% of the Bath Iron Works and (BTW) [Microsoft] got their ass handed to them on a used kotex by US NAVY brass when they tried to replace CICS SUN Computers with made in Israel Microsoft Systems.

Now I am hearing from MSNBC shill girlies the reason they can't call the caucus is because Dr. Paul is over represented on the "entry" polls, and [should be in a] Sanitarium is under represented on those so called "entry" polls. MSNBC is hitting bricks like a dog that just got ass farked by a cement mixer because the entry polls, as of this post, show that 48% of caucus goers under 30 are 48% for Ron Paul.

Noodled out why MSNBC has it shorts on backwards against Ron Paul - GE got 138 Billion Bailout for Obama's FDIC. GE printed 26 Billion in Profits in 2010 and added another 4 Billion in Tax Subsidies thanks to Obama's (for a grand total of 30 Billion in [tax free] profits for GE in 2010).

Dr. Paul, according to a CNN poll (Napolitano YouTube) , is the only candidate that beat Obama.

No farking wonder Degenerate Madcow's producers are wasting pixels with Huntsman at zero percent and giving losers like him and Bachman all the bandwidth. When  Dr Paul beats Obama, Comcast will have to pay back the 138 Billion Obama gave GE and GE will loose all it's DU ordinance business (know how much 1 20mm DU bullet costs - you won't believe it and GE's gattling guns shoot out thousands of them muthas a minute.

How MSNBC and the GOP establishment figures 2 + 2 = 3:

Sanitarium losses to Hilary. Hilary losses to Obama :: therefore Sanitarium beats Obama??? Duhhhh .... errrr ... gee dey dumb. Obama is the best thing that ever happened for the establishment GOP and they ain't gonna give him up easy.

Sanitarium, for president, give me a break, Of the three most corrupt senators designated by CREW in 2006, Sanitarium is the only one not in jail.

If you can find a little time to spare here and there (especially you ex broker types with the series VII broker phone button phinger), this site has information as to how you can help Dr Paul win this for America - for your kids - for ur-self - be a revolutionary (pushing phone buttons don't got the kick of a 9mm Glock but can be almost as emancipating) and visit this site for instructions.

How did it come to this? A country full of people buying stuff they can't eat with money thay don't have and ain't worth the paper it be printed on (Shooting big bores with fat loads and heavy lead is lot's of fun by golley - but field dressing these K-Street Kiddie Brothel Johns ain't worth the time it takes to put an edge on the gutting blade)
