Follow The Iowa Caucuses Live

Tyler Durden's picture

The buck stops here and the votes begin: starting at 7 pm CST, more than 100,000 voters - only a small percentage of the state's electorate - are expected to gather across the state at more than 800 public spots, and cast their votes for their GOP candidate with only three: Paul, Romney and for some unknown reason, Santorum expected to have a fighting changes. Results should begin coming in within a few hours. For those following the caucus for the only important reason: to see how Ron Paul does, or is allowed to do, we have the following live feeds for our readers' disposal.

CNN:

Fox News:

Politico:

Live results can be seen here as they trickle in:

And some more on the Iowa caucus from Reuters as the GOP primary kicks off officially:

Republican candidates crisscrossed Iowa in a last-minute bid for support on Tuesday ahead of the first contest of the 2012 U.S. presidential campaign, and at least three - Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Ron Paul - appeared to have a shot at victory.

Iowa's caucuses are known more for weeding out candidates than picking the future president. Finishing in the top spot Tuesday night could provide a big boost in the state-by-state battle to select a Republican challenger to Democratic President Barack Obama in the Nov. 6 election.

Most of the candidates have topped opinion polls at one point in the volatile Republican race that until recently centered on televised debates rather than on-the-ground campaigning.

Polls show Romney, the favorite of the party's business wing, in a tight race with Paul, a U.S. congressman from Texas with libertarian views, and Santorum, a former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania who hopes to consolidate Iowa's large bloc of Christian conservatives. Romney is a former Massachusetts governor.

Many voters remain undecided. The unusual caucus process adds an element of unpredictability. Voters in Iowa gather in public meetings at hundreds of sites around the state such as schools, libraries and churches, listening to speeches touting the various candidates before casting their ballots.

"I'm kind of on the fence. A name that's been kind of sticking out, along with everyone, is Rick Santorum. We're not a hundred percent for sure yet," Des Moines resident Jason Harpineau said just hours before the start of the caucuses.

...

Sparsely populated Iowa only yields 28 delegates of the 1,143 needed to lock up the Republican presidential nomination, and those delegates aren't actually awarded for months after Tuesday's caucuses.

Santorum hopes to emerge as the latest conservative alternative to Romney.

Largely consigned to the margins for most of the race, Santorum is now fending off attacks from his rivals who see him as a new threat. On Tuesday, he said Paul was behind a wave of automated phone calls that question his anti-abortion and pro-gun credentials.

"Ron Paul is disgusting," Santorum told Fox News reporters.

A win by Paul would help him extend his minimal-government stance and broaden the appeal of his campaign outside his zealous base, many of them independents, disaffected Democrats and younger voters.

There really is only one legitimate choice. The most disruptive choice.

THE FREAKIN' TRUTH.

Vote Ron Paul as a message against what every even slightly open eyed human being can see for themselves BOLD and CLEAR AS A BELL.

The system is broken and requires intervention.

It doesn't even matter what your ideology is, the fact remains that any honest and informed person at this point ought to accept that radical change is going to happen. A vote for Ron Paul signifies that YOU would like a shot at participating in that change, rather than becoming merely a victim of it's clear design.

If ever in our lifetimes the urgency of acting as individuals to assert our supposed right to determine our collective destiny were more clear, I must have still been sleeping.

Imagine a personal relationship with nearly any other Federal politician? Would that work? Really?

So you would tolerate enormous deception, broken promise after broken promise, sleeping with the enemy, stealing your future, selling you out for personal gain................. All from a friend? Really.

Let's give the serious guy a shot.

RON PAUL.

Here's hint - there is this thing about historically if you don't place in the top 3, you won't be running for president. There also is this thing about iowa having rock bottom voter turnout. Maybe the magical thing about iowa simply is, that it represents manipulation, and that manipulation overally tends to decide who runs for president.

What a shame, on CNN a GI, RonPaul supportor can not finish his thought before signal was cut off. First they pushed Perry to steal votes from Paul. When it doesn't work, they put out Gingrich to bomb the whole camping. Still doesn't work, Santo was released to do dirty work. Maybe next time they will dig out Paul's medical record to show he has health issue and is out of touch with main media.

Santorum surged at the right time, before his counterparts can attack. Once people see more of his downside, he'll plummit just like the others. Rommney is clearly a tool. RP is the only hope, but it will be a damn hard fight. He'll continue to be attacked and undermined -- there are just too many powerful people who would be truly threatened by a Paul presidency. And that's the bottom line, in all likelihood.

But, Paul did well with young people and independents. So did Obama, and I suspect many Obama idiots will wise up and go for RP (unless of course, the economy magically improves between now and the election -- high chance, if TPTB can keep the leverage going, esp. if Paul is out front or still in contention). The same thing happened years ago in MN, when young people across the state came out on droves and swept Jesse Ventura into the governor's mansion. It could, really, maybe, happen again if we all stand up, talk to our friends and loved ones and get them to WAKE THE FUCK UP!

PS: FOX tonight was all over the "unelectable" phrase -- those old douchebags have no freeking clue! CNN seemed a little better, esp. that foxy Erin Burnett -- she tried a few times to point out his appeal to independents and moderates...at one point, Wolf got up and went to the board, totally cutting her off. Once you realize that all of the coverage is closely managed, it really does become like a circus act, bitchez.

Just thinking -- it may good in a way that RP didn't win - MSM had already started priming the pump abput a Paul victory meaning the end of Iowa's importance - they'd be relagated to the dust bin as ineffectual and completely out of touch. That he didn;t outright win means they can't say Iowa has no merit. RP is one of the few candidates with braod support in nearly every state -- Santorum does not have the system in place anywhere but Iowa, and he is toast anyway once people learn who the eff he is. Romeny or RP. Establishment or Man-of-the-People. Chose your sides, but choose carefully - and be prepared to give all for the things that really matter (life, liberty and the pursuit of freedom, bitchez).

The peoples who are not liking the words you are saying are like peoples who are thinking it is an important thing who is being given the wheel of a ship that is sinking like the Titanic when it was sinking after a bad captain was running it into an iceberg with speed it should not have been having.   People who are paying attentions to the peoples who are choosing a new captain are not having their attention where it should be mattering because it is no longer being important who that person they are choosing is.   Even if he is a man who is good at being the captain it is making no difference because the crew he will be having is still crazy and fearing for themselves because they are knowing how bad the ship he is steering is.

Santorum is simply the 4th Anti Romney  candidate they've boosted. Just not enough time to expose him (like the Newt) before this vote. Look who Iowans have championed in the last 4 caucuses. This is no surprise. It means nothing. If anything makes Romney look weaker.  Santorum skips NH and goes straight to SC.  He will not play well there. He has no money and no organization. Game over. Perry 3rd in SC? Maybe. Does he get help from Bushees in FL if he places or shows in SC? He still has cash to burn through.

Romney is well ahead in NH polls. This will be RP's chance to overachieve and embarass Romney. Rand and supporters already invading SC. RP has dollars and organization and should do well in SC while others fall away. Florida? WTFK. Could be a 2 man race by then.  THEY will not allow RP to gain much more traction

I've been trying to get on the site all night. This reminds me of Kerry v Bush all over. The entrance and exit polls and actual numbers are off  by double the margin of error. I remember a statistician back then saying it doesn't prove that the polls are wrong , it proves a rigged election.

It matters little though. This "union" is too far gone. Better to just opt out of representative gov't all together and self-govern.

when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security

LOL! The sheeple will never be defeated!!! (in their brainwashed programmed servitude to the media) Thank God!

I was a little worried for a moment. A Ron Paul victory in Iowa could have inflamed the masses into God knows what. Now the next President will definitely be Romney - or (if Santorum wins the nomination) Obama.

Good thing the only candidate not supporting the (elite, superior, and moral) global government is an incoherent half senile elf man - Trust me, it's no accident that there is no 50 year old charismatic articulate candidate preaching personal liberty for the sheep ;-)

Imagine a country controlled by the greedy whims of the evil sheep mob, instead of responsible industrialists and bankers? Complete chaos that would make Cambodia's Killing Fields look like a picnic.

Romney can't beat Obama. In order to win, Obama's opponent must be able to capture a majority of Independents and some Democrats. Mitt Romney is more like Obama than Obama is. He can't do it.

Only one Republican can draw the broad support needed to defeat our unpopular yet still incumbent President. Ron Paul 2012.

Right in the middle of the CNN interview of a US Army Corporal, who was asked why he supported Ron Paul, CNN lost the feed right after he said that it was time to go to a peace time army. The marine got to speak during Ron Paul's "ticket out of Iowa" speech. Ron's speech was perfectly timed. It was obvious he would come in third so he got on the air ahead of the other candidates and made a good speech which was cheered by enthusiastic supporters. The marine then spoke. I guess that CNN didn't have the guts to cut him off twice. Ron got about 15 minutes of face time before any of the other candidates appeared. The front runners still haven't spoken and folks are tuning out and going to bed. Paul's campaign is much more savvy this time around.

A disappointment, to be sure, but there is still some hope. I think there are lots of people who simply will not vote for Romney, so an anti-Romney canditate will have to emerge.

Is Santorum the anti-Romney? I think not. He actually endorsed Romney in 2008. He hasn't had much scrutiny so far, so hopefully his support will collapse like the Perry's and Newt's did.

Ron Paul has diehard supporters and if he can just hang in for a while, I still think he can become the anti-Romney.

Newt really is pissed. He said in his speech "I am not going to go negative, but I am going to tell the truth about the other candidates, Ron Paul and I need to debate foriegn policy, but romney is only slightly more conservative than Obama"

This means he is going to go negative, and Ron Paul should welcome a debate on foriegn policy when the american people, history, and simple war fatique are on his side. Nothing is going to help Romeny on the issue of being a country club republican in the worst economy since the great depression.

Go after his tax returns Newt! you can take Romney out of the race on this issue alone.

Don't paint with such a broad brush....especially tonight.

The problem with TX is that it has a HUGE neocon machine with LOTS of oil money in the coffers to accomplish wars for energy dominance.

Judging by Gingrich's angry speech tonight, he's going to attack Romney with everything he's got from now on. Even if he can't win for himself (but he's not given up yet), he's gonna make damned sure that Romney doesn't either. And Romney's support appears to consist of lots of lukewarm "maybe he's the best of a bad bunch" types, so it shouldn't take much to put a sizable dent in it. We've seen from Gingrich's own results how effective negative ads can be.

Assuming that Gingrich succeeds in sinking Romney, while not managing to come back into serious contention himself, that would basically leave Paul against Santorum. That, surely, is a winnable contest!

Agree. I think in the early stage of the debate newt put it out there that he wanted a cabinet position (reagan legacy type position) after he played king maker. When it got rough it came from Romney, the guy he thought he was helping to win.
