Follow The Iowa Caucuses Live

Tyler Durden's picture

The buck stops here and the votes begin: starting at 7 pm CST, more than 100,000 voters - only a small percentage of the state's electorate - are expected to gather across the state at more than 800 public spots, and cast their votes for their GOP candidate with only three: Paul, Romney and for some unknown reason, Santorum expected to have a fighting changes. Results should begin coming in within a few hours. For those following the caucus for the only important reason: to see how Ron Paul does, or is allowed to do, we have the following live feeds for our readers' disposal.

CNN:

Fox News:

Politico:

Live results can be seen here as they trickle in:

And some more on the Iowa caucus from Reuters as the GOP primary kicks off officially:

Republican candidates crisscrossed Iowa in a last-minute bid for support on Tuesday ahead of the first contest of the 2012 U.S. presidential campaign, and at least three - Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Ron Paul - appeared to have a shot at victory.

Iowa's caucuses are known more for weeding out candidates than picking the future president. Finishing in the top spot Tuesday night could provide a big boost in the state-by-state battle to select a Republican challenger to Democratic President Barack Obama in the Nov. 6 election.

Most of the candidates have topped opinion polls at one point in the volatile Republican race that until recently centered on televised debates rather than on-the-ground campaigning.

Polls show Romney, the favorite of the party's business wing, in a tight race with Paul, a U.S. congressman from Texas with libertarian views, and Santorum, a former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania who hopes to consolidate Iowa's large bloc of Christian conservatives. Romney is a former Massachusetts governor.

Many voters remain undecided. The unusual caucus process adds an element of unpredictability. Voters in Iowa gather in public meetings at hundreds of sites around the state such as schools, libraries and churches, listening to speeches touting the various candidates before casting their ballots.

"I'm kind of on the fence. A name that's been kind of sticking out, along with everyone, is Rick Santorum. We're not a hundred percent for sure yet," Des Moines resident Jason Harpineau said just hours before the start of the caucuses.

...

Sparsely populated Iowa only yields 28 delegates of the 1,143 needed to lock up the Republican presidential nomination, and those delegates aren't actually awarded for months after Tuesday's caucuses.

Santorum hopes to emerge as the latest conservative alternative to Romney.

Largely consigned to the margins for most of the race, Santorum is now fending off attacks from his rivals who see him as a new threat. On Tuesday, he said Paul was behind a wave of automated phone calls that question his anti-abortion and pro-gun credentials.

"Ron Paul is disgusting," Santorum told Fox News reporters.

A win by Paul would help him extend his minimal-government stance and broaden the appeal of his campaign outside his zealous base, many of them independents, disaffected Democrats and younger voters.

fkn santorum's first line of business if he got into the whitehouse would be to bomb Iran.

I pray to God that he has children who are active combat military who will be first to the fight. Lead from the front right dad?

Romney would be no different.

Surprising amount of emotion amongst the RP crew tonight.  It's kind of similar to the metals market: you KNOW that silver is totally manipulated, but get up each morning somehow hoping that it's gonna break out today!  Understandable. But still ostrich-like.

I'll wager that PM's are much more likely to shake free of their imposed shackles than the American political process can shake free of the Stalinist manipulation that increasingly becomes evident to all who dare see.  It's become a total mockery, and there's nothing that N Korea or any other totalitarian state has to teach the usurpers in DC anymore.

Time to step back and consider: is it possible that the RP candidacy is a pressure valve for those who would otherwise get so alienated by all of the bullshit as to be driven to actually Do something, before it's too late?

I suspect that the careful agenda that is being played out here has already mandated that by Nov 2012 there will have been created enough barriers in the road to peaceful or armed protest as to have made the final stage of this long running coup détat unstoppable.  It's all about managing perceptions to keep the pressure below the boiling point in the pot.  Just something to think about tonight.

*no, I am not saying the RP would not be a great President, nor that he's not the best in the field of candidates, nor that he is not decent, honorable and worthy of high office....I am saying that those are not attributes which have the right stuff for winning in the dirty cesspool of what politics has become.  And that it's time to talk a long hard look at what the future holds, plan for survival using head&heart together, and then get ready for a long and bitter struggle.  The ostrich phase is over.

So, aside from voting, what EXACTLY do you suggest we DO?  This is a genuine question.  I like to here others' opinions about solutions.  You never know when one will stick!

voting is Big, but only at the local level.  Federal politics is now just a diversionary sideshow.

"what EXACTLY do you suggest we DO?"

I've laid out my own opinion on that question on these pages before.  Brief synopsis:  the only warrant to your liberty and security from encroaching statist tyranny is now the constitutional authority of your local Sheriff and grand jury...IOW, you are now only as safe as your local elected officials can make you, and your militia can keep you.

If you're not involved in your counties' electoral process, and actively advocating the primacy of your Sheriff's authority over federal trespass, you're just another number in a Fema Camp lottery bowl.

Good suggestion, although I believe we may be already beyond the point where this will work. Many local sheriff departments are already happily tooling up with copious amounts of new toys and gadgetry, courtesy of the ongoing beta-testing in Iraq/Afghanistan. Local county governments are not providing this new gear without strings. They assuredly make it known that the only way the goodies keep coming is if the sheriff and his deputies understand who butters their bread. My local county here in VA scoots around in brand new Dodge Chargers, while the number of 'troops' keeps growing. Interestingly, the very vast majority of them all look like Paris Island graduates. Wonder what that's all about? /sarc.

BTW, there are one or two sheriffs around the country who are courageously stepping up to the plate and asserting their duly granted authority (I believe there is an ongoing case in Oregon where the sheriff is tangling with the feds). This is good news, but unfortunately it is the very rarest of exceptions. Will be interesting to see how these gentlemen fare against leviathan.

Isn't it interesting how important (or not) the opinion is of the roughly 100,000 people (.03% of Iowa's population, .0003% of the US population, and .0000007% of the world population) who bothered to get involved in their own political process?

Good thing you're not a math major. :)

100,000 out of 3 million is about 3%, or 0.03 - not 0.03 percent!

It's a fair point, though. Assuming that half of the Iowans are Repubs, and maybe two thirds of these old enough and unjailed enough to vote, that would make a million. Why is only one out of ten voting?

But I don't really understand the American caucus system. I read somewhere that tonight's event was basically a glorified opinion poll, without any formal significance, so maybe that's why most don't bother. I wonder what the turnout is for the actual presidential elections.

Yeah, I'm listening live to the Iowa stuff. Heard Ron Paul, decent man but doesn't speak too well, really. Ends each sentence with a sort of chuckle..bit girly. Doesn't come across as a leader..ie has substance, no form while OB has form, no substance.

Also, whilst I have a lot of time for libertarians, their 'open border' policies and willingness to let Iran get nukes (and destroy Israel) is a bit too libertarian for my taste (not the view of this board: I understand that),

And the shrieks & cries of delight at every word the nomines utter is a bit over the top. Very American though. I guess they react that way to K-Mart ads, yes?

Ron Paul actually might have pulled off a stealth coup in Iowa.

"Senior advisors for Paul's coalitions team told Business Insider this week that the campaign's organizational strategy was focused not only on getting as many votes as they can, but in making sure that their volunteers stuck around after the voting to make sure that they were nominated as delegates to the county's Republican convention — the first step towards being appointed as a delegate to the Republican National Convention..."

"Technically, tonight's vote was a straw poll, determining no delegates, but setting the tone. The only actions that actually could make a difference in electing delegates to the National Convention heavily favored Paul. Nobody will be watching in June, unless this election gets much more exciting, but Ron Paul might send more Iowa delegates to Orlando than any other candidate."

But we would not expect the same from our congress critters to start a 10 year war with Iran? Need the "War Powers" POTUS to act in these long hours 'cause the constitution is too old and not fast enough for geo-political wars of agression.

This is an epic win for Ron Paul and his constitutional stance on military adventurism and the absurbity of the war powers act as implemented.  I hope the 9 peeps in Black Robes are watching.

Than again Santorum is unlikely to carry this support for more than 2-3 weeks as his track record will be highlighted so unless Romney manages to win the next 4 or 5 Primaries straight with Ron Paul getting nothing it's game over or game on, this is now a race between Ron Paul and Romney ONLY with Santorum having done his job(at preventing a RP Iowa win) let's see what happens now

A perspective from the eastern side of the 'pond'.  The Guardian newspaper had an article today about Ron Paul - and mightily complimentary it was. It may surprise some, but the Guardian is the most liberal/left-wing paper in (mass) circulation in the UK, with a long history of lefy/centrist politics.

I've been following the debates & regarded RP as the most sensible Republican Party presidential candidate hopeful - really, what is there not to like about his ideas?  On the most basic & simple level, his thoughts about foreign wars/intervention (i.e. absenting the USA from them, in the most part..) would alone have saved $trillions from the national debt & not destroyed so much goodwill. globally.

Further, his prescriptions for sound(er) money & views on realistic sustainable (and even reducing..) debt levels seem like the only alternative to many years of depression & very high inflation (or worse!).

Although I shouldn't comment perhaps, on Iowan voters & their choices, I'm disappointed that in a state so (apparently) grounded in the practical & core American values of the original settlers & constitution , that the down-to-earth message of Ron Paul wasn't heard more clearly or really understood.

The only hope now maybe (assuming RP will not progress to the nomination) , is that RP's vote percentage & obvious constituency will find expression in the other candidates' manifestos with a view to capturing that when the winner battles for the Presidency against the Democratic incumbent.

All that really matters is WHO is selected to the electoral college.  The nomination of electors happens AFTER the polls close on the same night.  Electoral candidates have to be nominated and then voted on.  They then go to the RNC convention and cast their votes.  So caucuses are really for show.  The real votes are by the electoral college.  Getting selected to be an elector is NOT as easy as it sounds.  And if the party machine finds out a nominee would only support Ron Paul, chances are slim of being selected.  THAT is how the establishment keeps its stranglehold on who becomes the candidate.

RP consistently places first in every national poll. He crushed it on drudge lastnight in the most telling poll of all imo - a poll of the people themselves. If you ever needed proof that these conventions are nothing more than a gathering of the good old boy network to decide who they will knight to run for their party then you need look no further. These conventions have jack and shit to do with what the people want. Even if they did you still couldn't trust them because those machines are all hacked and even if they don't use machines then they would still 'miscount' the ballots if the people running the party didn't like the outcome. America is Mexico in a suit. The sooner you realize that then the sooner you can either fuck off and accept it or organize with others to put a stop to it. On another note, Santorum?? Really???

@bruce wayne does having executive experience "matter" for winning an election ? Look at obama. Your argument is a straw man. Also Paul is the only philosophically consistent in the field and does embody the liberty principles at the root of America's success in the past.

The rest of the field is a sad joke of cronyism and incompetence. Maybe Americans have been dumbed down and dont want to be America anymore, they would like to become kind of like Europe. That will not turn out too well. Unfortunately it seems most Americans cant seem to think anymore. The French should maybe take this back http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statue_of_Liberty

Hmm.... Based on various sources the end of the first quarter of 2012 looks like the approximate timeframe for the "moment(s)" during which the veil will be lifted and reality will come home to roost on the world with a vengeance. Consider the confluence of events taking place during the Ides of March. You have a deadline in the greek bond payment fiasco, a situation in which, upon a (defacto) default, the eurozone dominoes begin falling HARD. You also have global debt issuance peaking for the year, a situation that could cause a major hiccup in bond auctions, could blow out spreads, result in major bankruptcies that again serve as the dominoes, etc... you have the potential for all of this Iran war mongering drama to come to a head due to pressure buildup or timely false-flaggyness with which to obfuscate the coming fiat calamity of the mathematical certainty of global debt implosion... the most direct effect will probably be the bank holidayshe disruption in global trade leading to resource and food shortages, or the fiat revaluation leading to unaffordable resources and food, blah blah….

There is more. but we all know already. It's just funny that we are HERE NOW in 2012, and the shit WILL hit the fan. Your ZH comment record and/or reputation will not save you. Who knows what is going to happen? I actually left the US in late 2011 after 15 years as a Northeast US resident. I was born in the UK and after 7 years moved to Canada where I lived for 8 years. During this time I spent sporadic time in Ghana, Malawi and Uganda (parents are Ghanaian). Maybe it's my non-stationary background that has kept my country/patriotic bias to a minimum and allowed me to realize that there’s no need to risk my life/freedom/humanity by staying here. My family is still in the US. I couldn’t convince them. I had to get the hell out. This is no fucking joke eh? Ever stepped on a landmine and froze? You might be there now.

Finance type, did some time on Wall Street... it was on wall street that i realized "wow, the government is lying to EVERYONE! About EVERYTHING!" And I got scared. Once the Fed stepped in on Bear Stearns, i knew there were probably not just skeletons in the closet, but some grotesque muredrous extra-dimensional pure evil monstrosities that live on human blood and suffering type zombies in the closet and it was time to make preps to get the fuck out.

The FEMA camps and the NDAA bill are no joke. 9/11 was no joke and should give all you really smart guys a clue as to what type of non-human entities you are at the mercy of if you choose to exercise your free will and remain within the theater of activity. Like I've mentioned once before, I actually relocated to West Africa. Life couldn't be simpler, or better. And it's been easier to acquire things like extra food, water, gasoline, generator, etc. The death of Western hegemony is rapidly translating into growth and expansion opportunities on the Darkest Continent. I’ve been in fight or flight situations before. Sometimes I fought, sometimes I ran. Sometimes running is the smart choice, especially when you are outnumbered, or outgunned, or just plain not invested or give a damn about what the other asshole wants to fight to the death for. In this case, my life is the only thing precious to me, not a piece of real estate or foolish, misplaced pride (i.e. a deadly sin. Against yourself).

I have a strange feeling that no matter the mental, physical and resource preparation you make, there will be trauma associated with too close a proximity to whatever heavy shit is about to come down. I can be a pretty psycho bastard, but I don’t have shit on these loons, and who’s to say they won’t take a whole bunch of you down with them? I don’t want to find out.

Anyway. Its 2012. The only real surprise will be if there is no surprise and no resolution. Maybe Pentagon Space Command really has set us up for a fake alien invasion? I’m sure even some of you have realized that The National Security State is so large that it’s possible for even ZH to be a front for The Company? The rabbit hole is deep. Cyborgs anyone? Soul-less automatons? That’s all just bullshit right? Right… I heard somewhere that reality is stranger than fiction. Looking at space long enough with infra-red goggles (and the naked eye?) will verify the truth of that statement.

How can you possibly have any faith in the US election? I was a RP fan, 4 years ago. Now? It’s too late. Not losing faith or being a downer, but the best RP can do at this point is awaken those on the CUSP of realizing the left-right political paradigm is a clown show specially put on for brainwashed meat-puppets. Singularity anyone?

Anyway. Just rambling. Like I said, March. See you in the extra-dimensional universal consciousness field after the rapture…

I agree with your interpretation of events for the most part.  Things are going to get dicey...real soon.  I will still use one of my only remaining freedoms and vote for rp even if the fix is in.  But I will also prep hard.  Nowhere on earth is safe now.  Africa is also in the crosshairs of the psychopaths.  I was born here, and I would prefer to die here rather than live in a foreign land in which I would also be tracked and killed.  The best of luck to you.
