Food Stamp Use Surges By Most In Years As Alabama Foodstamp Recipients Double In May

Tyler Durden's picture

It appears that GDP data revisions are not the only thing that the administration enjoys fudging with in order to make the Chinese ministry of Truth seem like a real ministry of truth. After last month the data for April food stamp recipients indicated the we may, just may, be reaching an inflection point in the foodstamp participation following a mere 60 thousand jump in those receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), today's just released data confirmed that the BLS and BEA may have had a hand or two when determining this latest data series. Because the just announced jump in foodstamp usage of over 1.1 million is entirely out of the blue, and as the chart below shows, is the highest single monthly jump in Foodstamp participation since mid 2009, when eligibility requirements were adjusted. Yes, that's 45.8 million people (obviously an all time record) living on foodstamps which amount to the whopping $133.80 per person (an increase of $0.54 M/M) and $283.65 (an increase of $1.29) per household. Obviously, annualizing the latest monthly rate of 1.1 million people, it means that over 13 million Americans will live on about one third what the cheapest iPad costs in about a year.

But wait, there's more. Digging into the numbers reveals something pecuiliar: virtually the entire surge in monthly SNAP participation is due to one state alone: Alabama, which saw those living on foodstamps jump from 868K to 1.762MM. That's 36% of Alabama's population. Is this merely a grand rehearsal for the Jefferson County bankruptcy? Did the state see a mass surge in foodstamp use as hundreds of thousands are trying to game the system in advance of what will be an apic Chapter 9? And if yes, what does that mean for all the other states which will promptly follow in the footsteps of Jefferson County, and for US foodstamp participation?

Which begs the question: will Obama be the first president under whose rule total foodstamp usage hit 100 million? Surely, by then there will be a Nobel price for destroying one's middle class better and faster than any communist in the history of the world, so at least there will be something to memorialize it with.

This actually is transitory.  April 27, 2011, the worst natural disaster in our states recorded history, shut down a LOT of factories, restaurants, dry cleaners, gas stations.  A lot of people lost their homes and their employers on the same day.

When Katrina hit they set up a giant food stamp registration expo at the civic center. Never seen it so easy for so many to get food stamps, and their was no shame in it because all industry was shut down  for repair work. Check the stats on that one. The food stamps only lasted for a month unless you reapplied for extended food stamp benefits.

Well the tornados hit end of April and this report was for May...so if it continues in June (which we won't know until November) then it is something other than tornados...or the qualifiers have changed or some as yet to be determined cause.

I would have forgotten too if it wasn't for the daily reminder I have from living here.

I hate food stamps.  I hate that somehow there are people that, after 20 years on the dole, never "get back on their feet" ( how hard are they trying after xx years?)

This, however, is the kind of disaster that justifies food stamps.  Their would be a lot of starving kids in Alabama without them right now.

And the other problem we are having is that a lot of the LARGE facilities that employed hundreds, are having second thoughts about rebuilding.  Here is one that finally decided to rebuild this morning, after a promise of a big tax break from the state:

This is a very large disaster across many states and Red Cross workers are deploying from all over the country to help. Many people have suffered tremendous loss and are depending on the Red Cross for assistance. The Red Cross is helping people today and will still be helping them in the weeks ahead as they try to get back on their feet. This severe weather has been non-stop for several weeks, leaving devastation across many states. Since the beginning of April, more than 2,500 Red Cross workers have assisted with relief and recovery efforts on 23 operations, stretching across more than half of the country. They have:

  • Served more than 1.4 million meals and snacks
  • Opened 180 shelters providing more than 15,000 overnight stays
  • Provided more than 32,000 health and mental health consultations
  • Deployed more than 670 Red Cross emergency response and other disaster vehicles to areas affected by wildfires, floods and tornadoes.

i've donated...proudly.  Folks, T-town (tuscaloosa) is still in shambles...the more rural areas will NEVER recover (see waveland and diamond head, mississippi).  all my issues with organized Christianity notwithstanding, the collective efforts of the church have been meritable if not miraculous; but, needless to say, much work remains.  for the most part, that means materials -- which means money.

PS to my fellow SAEs: the University of Alabama just so happens to be your MOTHER MU, bitchez!  so pony up, Phi Alphas!  (from my experience, most finance guys were also frat boys...not trying to start some sort of petty Greek vs. GDI thing)

perhaps anonomity is best; we can help just fine from the faceless fringe.  moreover, as JC said, 'when it comes to givin, it's best that your right hand not know what the left is up to'.  Christ was no fool, He knew all the Good Stuff comes from the left.

Hedgeless,

May God bless you.  But, if He fails to find favor with you, I'll be making my August donation to ZH in your honor (it'll be mid month, mr. durden; tithing is tricky, and it's all about timing).

Zappa's face does not belong on this rabid rightwing hate-jerkoff website.

Somewhere, he's laughing at you for not understanding him or his music, whatsoever.

You might want to start with his autobiography, "The Real Frank Zappa Book," to get a more direct expression of his ideas and political leanings if you don't have the wit to read into the beautiful [and vicious] subtlety of the content of his songs.

As for the rest of you, try harder. Your supposed recollections of welfare queens and government moochers are about as stale as Reagan's corpse. Grow a little courage and just come out and express which races and creeds you'd like to kill. It'll help you unite with other nazi wannabes via the wondrous power of Google analytics...that and identify your "community" for what it actually is: a semi-affluent and boorishly bigoted armchair-investor support group. Forget analysis, guys. You already know what you want to believe. You wouldn't even need to visit this site if it weren't for your deep-seated insecurities that require constant affirmation. Enjoy your hateful wankery.

I do think gold is  kinda creepy and is not money. They let me post here. The Federal reserve is tax free and has gold.

The arch nemesis of this interwebs site is Jim Cramer, but he has a tax free charity that invests in gold.

The leader of the Tea party has an LLM in taxation and likes gold and worked for reagans opponent, Jimmy carter.

I want a nasty little jewish princess
With long phony nails and a hairdo that rinses
A horny little jewish princess
With a garlic aroma that could level tacoma
Lonely inside
Well, she can swallow my pride

I want a hairy little jewish princess
With a brand new nose, who knows where it goes
I want a steamy little jewish princess
With over-worked gums, who squeaks when she cums
I don't want no troll
I just want a yemenite hole

I want a darling little jewish princess
Who don't shit about cooking and is arrogant looking
A vicious little jewish princess
To specifically happen with a pee-pee that's snappin
All up inside
I just want a princess to ride
Awright, back to the top...everybody twist

I want a funky little jewish princess
A grinder; a bumper, with a pre-moistened dumper
A brazen little jewish princess
With titanic tits, and sand-blasted zits
She can even be poor
So long as she does it with four on the floor
(vapor-lock)

I want a dainty little jewish princess
With a couple of sisters who can raise a few blisters
A fragile little jewish princess
With roumanian thighs, who weasels n lies
For two or three nights
Wont someone send me a princess who bites
Wont someone send me a princess who bites
Wont someone send me a princess who bites
Wont someone send me a princess who bites

You may want to add a comment about this song and Zappa's conflict with the ADL before posting lyrics without context. I'm sure the Nazis here will enjoy these lyrics without any pesky historical reality.

Since we're posting some of Frank's words, here's a few more worth applying within the context of this conversation:

"Most people wouldn't know music if it came up and bit them on the ass."

"There is more stupidity than hydrogen in the universe, and it has a longer shelf life."

"A mind is like a parachute. It doesn't work if it's not open."

"Modern Americans behave as if intelligence were some sort of hideous deformity."

"If you wind up with a boring misrerable life because you listened to your mom, your dad, your teacher, your preacher or some guy on TV telling you how to do your shit, then YOU DESERVE IT."

"The biggest threat to America today is not communism. It's moving America toward a fascist theocracy, and everything that's happened during the Reagan administration is steering us right down that pipe ... I really think that. … When you have a government that prefers a certain moral code derived from a certain religion and that moral code turns into legislation to suit one certain religious point of view, and if that code happens to be very, very right wing, almost toward Attila the Hun."

Anecdotal traffic report. I am on the road a lot.  After the 2008 debacle,  ALL traffic dropped to almost nothing.  Excruciatingly slow, the truck traffic ticked up barely.  It was nice for awhile, no shoppers, old geezers clogging up the day time roads.  Then, "consumer" traffice bumped up, usually after 12pm, when the nonworking got up out of bed.  I was wondering where they were getting the money for gas to drive around all day when unemployed.  Now, stay off the roads on the first of every month.  All the goobermint $$ gets doled out and traffic is terrible.  Till about the fifth, when we are back to early morning traffic nice, afternoon traffic always bad.  Gas must still not be expensive enough.

Did everyone forget about the worst tornado outbreak in history that swept across the state of Alabama on the evening of 4/27/11?  It really wasn't that long ago.  Although it didn't stay in the media for long, and the true scale of the devastation was never covered in the media, I'm somewhat disturbed that it seems to have faded from the collective consciousness of even the most well informed of citizens.  I've heard the damage being compared to Katrina, but spread over a greater area.  It will take years for them to rebuild, and in an economy that was already one of the most depressed in the nation, you can be sure there will be elevated food stamp usage for some time to come in the state.

see my post above, but you are correct

The media had a pretty good bead on covering one of the worst of the storms, Tuscaloosa, but when Osama was killed, the devastation in Alabama got shoved out of the news cycle.  The damage across this state makes Katrina look like a cake walk.  Seriously.

You are more right than you know in contrasting the prosperity of the Wall Street banksters with the increasing poverty of the people of Alabama.  JP Morgan is the firm that sold the complex interest rate derivatives to Jefferson County, which of course blew up in their faces during the financial meltdown, and are a big reason why the county is now on the brink of default.  Party on banksters... just beware that people are waking up to your malicious exploitation, and someday it will all come back to you.

As an Alabama tornado victim who lost his house and 5 of his 6 precious oak trees, I can attest to how screwed up the system is. My State Farm homeowners insurance has already conceded $103,000 more than their first insulting settlement offer and we're still battling while my ruins are molding.  Total estimated insured losses in the state are estimated at $4 billion, yet State Farm, one insurer, is still trying to screw me along with countless others despite earning $8 billion in 2010.  The biggest sham is FEMA. The MAXIMUM payout under ANY circumstance is $30,200.  So, if your house, cars, and all your possessions were blown away and you had no insurance, the most FEMA will ever give you is $30,200 (I'm not sure if this number is published, but it came directly from a hat wearing horse's mouth). So, the big banks and big business get trillions in their moment of need. Mainstreet?  We get insulting pennies on the dollar when making all of us little guys whole would be inconsequential in the big scheme of things. WTF?

I live in earthquake country and don't currently have earthquake insurance.

If we have a big one I'm fucked a bit.

Not sure why you feel you're entitled to FEMA giving you anything(hypothetically speaking of you's who had no insurance), let alone bitching that it's only $30k

Am I missing somthing here?

Why should every one else shell out $30k per for people who didn't bother to carry insurance?

I don't approve of the banks getting handouts either but people need to be responsible for themselves and not look to uncle sugar because they chose not to carry insurance.

I post so rarely that I had forgotten my password, and by the time I reset it and logged in, I must have missed your posting on the matter.  I haven't seen the damage in AL firsthand, but I have heard about it, and I have no doubt that these food stamp numbers are directly correlated to that disaster.  It's quite rare to see Tyler and virtually everyone else here make an error in interpretation, so I felt the need to speak up.  On the other hand, Tyler may be right in drawing a connection between the food stamp usage numbers and Jefferson county's impending default.  That county was hit very hard, with many businesses being completely wiped out.  So it would be safe to say they will see at least a short term - and possibly longer term - drop in revenues, which cannot improve their fiscal situation at all.

And along these same lines, when will the Missouri effect be, next month? Why are those numbers exploding like in Alabama? I agree with what you saying, which is basically, let's not forget the state was ripped a new one and needs all the help it can get. Missouri, Georgia and North Carolina all were blasted as well this year by cluster tornoados and we should see their numbers rising accordingly, hopefully, not like in Alabama.

YEs, another friend of mine in Joplin, we grew up together in the Chicago area, not unfamiliar with tornadoes, said the one that blew her house away left a huge trench in the soil.  We were both discussing how the tornadoes are getting stronger than they were when we were young.  It is pretty frightening what is happening in the Midwest with tornadoes.  When I was young, the tornadoes usually hit farmland or forest.  Now those places are full of people, houses, shopping malls.

My state has an online site that those wondering if the qualify for food stamps (or snap if you prefer) can access and plug in personal info.

I used this site and played around with differing personal data; ie, income, rent cost, number in house hold, etc.

What I found was that if one's home was paid for (no mortgage) and one was not paying rent, then it was impossible to qualify for food stamps regardless of lack of income or variation of other personal parameters.

IOWs, if your home is paid off in this state and you have no income you will not get food stamps.

We don't need food stamps... but you might want to try the same experiment. The program varies by state... so I have heard.

a common poem...for a common man...

When plastered billboards scream with slogans
'fight for your country, go to battle'
When media's print assaults your senses,
'Support our leaders' shrieks and rattles…
And fools who don't know any better
Believe the old, eternal lie
That we must march and shoot and kill
Murder, and burn, and bomb, and grill…

When press begins the battle-cry
That nation needs to unify
And for your country you must die…
Dear brainwashed friend, my neighbor dear
Brother from this, or other nation
Know that the cries of anger, fear,
Are nothing but manipulation
by fat-cats, kings who covet riches,
And feed off your sweat and blood - the leeches!
When call to arms engulfs the land
It means that somewhere oil was found,
Shooting 'blackgold' from underground!
It means they found a sneaky way
To make more money, grab more gold
But this is not what you are told!

Don't spill your blood for bucks or oil
Break, burn your rifle, shout: 'NO DEAL!'
Let the rich scoundrels, kings, and bankers
Send their own children to get killed!
May your loud voice be amplified
By roar of other common men
The battle-weary of all nations:
WE WON'T BE CONNED TO WAR AGAIN!

Words and music by Freddie Mercury

I have sinned dear Father Father I have sinned
Try and help me Father
Won't you let me in? Liar
Nobody believes me Liar
Why don't they leave me alone?
Sire I have stolen stolen many times
Raised my voice in anger
When I know I never should
Liar oh ev'rybody deceives me
Liar why don't you leave me alone

Liar I have sailed the seas
Liar from Mars to Mercury
Liar I have drunk the wine
Liar time after time
Liar you're lying to me
Liar you're lying to me
Father please forgive me
You know you'll never leave me
Please will you direct me in the right way
Liar liar liar liar
Liar that's what they keep calling me
Liar liar liar

Oooh, let me go

Listen are you gonna listen
Mama I'm gonna be your slave
All day long
Mama I'm gonna try behave
All day long
Mama I'm gonna be your slave
All day long
I'm gonna serve you till your dying day
All day long
I'm gonna keep you till your dying day
All day long
I'm gonna kneel down by your side and pray
All day long and pray
All day long and pray
All day long and pray
All day long all day long all day long
All day long all day long all day long

All day long all day long all day long
Liar liar they never ever let you win
Liar liar everything you do is sin

I have been thinking about the idea given a lot of attention lately, that of freezing Social Security payments at current levels. They are afraid to make it means tested, there would be a huge backlash. What appears to be happening is a backdoor method of making Old Age Income means tested. If they ramp up Food Stamps, and Supplimental Security Income, both of which are means tested, they accompish the same thing. It will prevent higher net worth individuals from collecting as much income as they would under the recent methods of calculating benefits. Backdoor means testing of retirement benefits? Social Security payments frozen, higher Food Stamp payments...think about it....Rufusbird

Those alabama numbers make no sense whatsover.  All of a sudden the state hit 35% on Foodstamps when the previous month only ~18% of the state was.  Doesn't add up to me. Probably a gov't number screwup.

And by the way, once you get out of the cities AL is mostly white. ~68.5% White for the state as a whole. Course there is a lot of white trash.

Dead mean naked they shall be one
With the man in the wind and the west moon;
When their bones are picked clean and the clean bones gone,
They shall have stars at elbow and foot;
Though they go mad they shall be sane,
Though they sink through the sea they shall rise again;
Though lovers be lost love shall not;
And death shall have no dominion.

And death shall have no dominion.
Under the windings of the sea
They lying long shall not die windily;
Twisting on racks when sinews give way,
Strapped to a wheel, yet they shall not break;
Faith in their hands shall snap in two,
And the unicorn evils run them through;
Split all ends up they shan't crack;
And death shall have no dominion.

And death shall have no dominion.
No more may gulls cry at their ears
Or waves break loud on the seashores;
Where blew a flower may a flower no more
Lift its head to the blows of the rain;
Though they be mad and dead as nails,
Heads of the characters hammer through daisies;
Break in the sun till the sun breaks down,
And death shall have no dominion.

and/or this:

Dignity

By Bob Dylan

Fat man lookin' in a blade of steel
Thin man lookin' at his last meal
Hollow man lookin' in a cottonfield
For dignity

Wise man lookin' in a blade of grass
Young man lookin' in the shadows that pass
Poor man lookin' through painted glass
For dignity

Somebody got murdered on New Year's Eve
Somebody said dignity was the first to leave
I went into the city, went into the town
Went into the land of the midnight sun

Searchin' high, searchin' low
Searchin' everywhere I know
Askin' the cops wherever I go
Have you seen dignity?

Blind man breakin' out of a trance
Puts both his hands in the pockets of chance
Hopin' to find one circumstance
Of dignity

I went to the wedding of Mary-lou
She said I don't want nobody see me talkin' to you

Said she could get killed if she told me what she knew
About dignity

I went down where the vultures feed
I would've got deeper, but there wasn't any need
Heard the tongues of angels and the tongues of men
Wasn't any difference to me

Chilly wind sharp as a razor blade
House on fire, debts unpaid
Gonna stand at the window, gonna ask the maid
Have you seen dignity?

Drinkin' man listens to the voice he hears
In a crowded room full of covered up mirrors
Lookin' into the lost forgotten years
For dignity

Met Prince Phillip at the home of the blues
Said he'd give me information if his name wasn't used
He wanted money up front, said he was abused
By dignity

Footprints runnin' cross the sliver sand
Steps goin' down into tattoo land
I met the sons of darkness and the sons of light
In the bordertowns of despair

Got no place to fade, got no coat
I'm on the rollin' river in a jerkin' boat
Tryin' to read a note somebody wrote
About dignity

Sick man lookin' for the doctor's cure
Lookin' at his hands for the lines that were
And into every masterpiece of literature
for dignity

Englishman stranded in the blackheart wind
Combin' his hair back, his future looks thin
Bites the bullet and he looks within
For dignity

Someone showed me a picture and I just laughed
Dignity never been photographed
I went into the red, went into the black
Into the valley of dry bone dreams

So many roads, so much at stake
So many dead ends, I'm at the edge of the lake
Sometimes I wonder what it's gonna take
To find dignity

Or this from Temple of the Dog:
"I don't mind stealing bread from the mouths of decadence
But I can't feed on the powerless when my cup's already overfilled.
Well it's on the table and the fire's cookin'.
And they're farmin' babies while the slaves are working.
Blood is on table the mouths are chokin'.
And I'm going hungry.

Caerus,

do you really understand what you've pasted, or are you just fucking with me?

I tried to tell D Thomas not to go through with this...tried to assure him that there's nothing new under the sun, but he would have none of it.  he thought Saul of Tarsus a poetaster and a punk; thought that "oh grave where is thy victory; oh death where is thy sting" thingy a platitudinous pile of steaming sophestry.  i think paul nailed it just fine; but i don't begrudge D thomas a thing -- he answered a lot of questions no one knew to ask.

but, regarding propriety, i think we would have been better served with "The refusal to mourn the death by fire of a girl in london"...but what do I know, i tend to side with ezra pound.

Two potential causes for this that I can think of off the top of my head (As someone who slings SNAP...)

Either there was a change in the reporting criteria for Public Assistance Food Stamps cases (Cases with TANF and Food Stamps), to finally show them in the State's Food Stamps usage,

OR

As someone stated below, the natural disaster in Alabama allowed a LOT of people to apply for and receive Disaster Food Stamps (The easiest joke of government assistance to get, but of a limited duration). If it is Disaster Food Stamps, then people who were on Food Stamps may have had them replaced via Disaster Food Stamps and would be counted twice (Once for each program). That means this bump will be transitory (Seriously) and will only last for about 2 months total.

In one set of articles you say "both parties are patsies for the banks; there's no difference between them, then why do you state "Obama" anything? SNAP is good for JP Morgan Chase and Jamie Dimon, so where are their names? Is JP Morgan safe because Alabamians cannot blockade JP Morgan's entrance?

Have a Republican (Richard Shelby) stratify SNAP. How many are 99ers? how many have more than a high school degree? how many lost jobs to offshoring?

Finally, does anybody want to start a business in Alabama? Strings I would attach: corporations get three months to create 250,000 jobs in the US, or the Republican tax cuts expire to Clinton levels. In another 2 months, double down and 500,000 jobs get created in the US, or use of the FAA, the FCC, and the interstates all get mighty restricted. That wouldn't hurt anyone on food stamps.

Thoughts...

1. They all take money for selling out America, but Obama really loves his job.

2. Offshoring jobs was a hard decision to make, but somebody had to declare moratoriums on oil drilling, fishing, and turning off the water in CA.

3. Apparently nobody wants to start any jobs in AL, but in Mexico, with their Utopian homicidal drug cartels, they have managed to eek out a 4.9% unemployment rate without raising their debt ceiling or cutting off illegal immigration in either direction.

4. I suspect we will see beatings and more groping of genitalia by the TSA, but no need, as of now by the current regime, to resort to cutting off interstate travel to make happiness compulsory.

Meanwhile, back at the quiet bank run going on in Greece..... (from Drudge link Aug 2nd)

Greece's Clueless government

"Every time the markets move, I get phone calls," says an Athens-based fund manager. "They're from investors asking: 'How can I get my money out of the country?' "

One senior investment banker is more blunt: "People are scared that the government doesn't know what the fuck it's doing." He tells a story about an acquaintance who took out €30,000, wrapped it in a bag and stashed it in his garage. "The bag had previously had some food inside," he says. "So it attracted rats, who ate the notes."

So in Greece, the rats are eating Euros.  At least they're still good for something, for now.

Or is there something to be said for state banking?

Quick answer: those figures are what happens when China, I mean Wal-mart, ceases to subsidise your poor.

We were without power for a week, and threw out a refrigerator full of food. My neighbors and I survived by sharing food, charcoal, batteries, candles, bottled water, lighter fuel, whatever we had and whatever we could get for ourselves and each other from emergency Red Cross areas throughout the city. Even the Wal-mart was closed for days, so we couldn't even shop there. In addition, we lost the pharmacy, grocery stores, gas stations, convenience stores, fast food places. Our streets were blocked for days by National Guardsmen and roadblocks.1

Decent blog that has been covering the disaster - multiple pictures spread all over it, page chosen to mirror racist stances above: Black families grieve, white kid sells cookies in celebration.

But really, this blog has about 100 pages on the disaster - knock yourself out

Historic data:

Food stamp rolls in Alabama grow by 65,000

Tuesday, January 06, 2009

MONTGOMERY - Nearly one out of seven people in Alabama are receiving food stamp assistance, an increase of 65,000 people in the past year.

The rolls for the Food Assistance Program - the new name for the state's food stamp program - swelled from 559,364 in November 2007 to 624,670 at the end of November, according to state records.

And yes, before SNAP was FAP. And if 1/7 people were Fapping in 2009, then I'm guessing those Snapping would be larger.

Commentary: the USA is bizarre. Disaster relief as economic stimulus. Reality check though - Alabama was fucked economically before the disaster.

  • 1. Author does not state if this was due to natural disaster or riots caused by lack of Wal-mart & McDonalds.

All I'm saying is that statistics can lead to the wrong assumption.  The jump in Alabama food stamps was due to the tornado.

It's the same as saying champagne sales jumped in New York in December after Obama got elected and not recognizing the reason was New Years Eve and Christmas.

Well thank god almighty that the debt ceiling was raised! Now Alabama has enough funds to fund exponentially increased foodstamp usage, right? Right? WRONG!

...And the dough goes once again to the banksters who will in their Bentley's whiz by the average bum American carrying back gov issued glow-in-the-dark chedder cheese bricks to their newly erected tent cities. Yipeeeeeee!

Job creation shall come only after armageddon hits in the form of city rebuilding.

They make money off the government issued cards. Have a look..

Last year, I had to choose this card or have money sent into a bank account. I went for the savings account. Look at the banking fees on upper right (see link below). My son is now 18 years of age. His money is all in arrears owed to him. Ex stole from two companies while in a management accounting role.  She spent 1-1/2 on first offense, and another 5-1/2 years on second offense.

Moral of my story.. your government loves to create entitlements, then skims from the top.  Fortunately, my son is finally getting his money and is excited to see his bank account growing in size.

Not so fast there tyler! The vast majority of these new food stamp users for May was part of a one time disaster relief benefit. My family actually collected over $600 from this one time benefit. Because the tornados knocked down some high voltage 500kw transmission lines, a major part of the states population was completely without power for three days. The gubbmint was nice enough to replace all the food that might have gone bad in those few days without refrigeration. I can safely assure you that this was a one time anomally (barring any other disasters, of course!) The numbers for june should be back in line with trend.

The growth in the use of food stamps has always been a sign that society is prospering and therefore has more abundance to share with the less fortunate.  Great job Obama!  Also, we have always been at war with Eurasia.

The USA has been living the "Sink or Swim" philosophy for too long.

Problem being, you cant out swim a tsunami caused by corrupt corporations and politicians.

Eventually a the decision has to be made as to what kind of Nation you choose to build.

Make no mistake, Strong nations are built with tax dollars, education and healthcare being essential,

Without those two components the standard of living only declines, crimes escelates, social unrest will prevail,

this is the future.

Only a civil uprising will change policy, and break the chain of greed.

It goes far beyond politics left vs right.

Very few that have thier cake are willing to share....and thats not about to change anytime soon.

You know, I was in the strip district in Pittsburgh buying one bag of chicken thighs and arrived at the counter at the same time as a gentleman of color, with two loaded shopping carts full of meat; chicken wings, bacon, steaks, ribs - my mouth watered just thinking about it - all those delicious ribs!

I hoped our young saggily dressed friend would say, 'You go ahead with your one bag of chicken, fellow shopper.' but that didn't happen.

So there I sat in line at Wholey's and his final bill came to over 300 bucks. Then he had to go outside, ISYN.  Soon he was back and paid for his bill with a combo of cash (unspooled from a big roll of 20s), debit card, and Food Stamp Card. After one method of payment was processed, he would ask, 'How much now?' and then move onto the next.  I marveled at how this guy could tie up the entire line for 8-10 times what a normal strip district shopper would.

Really made me wonder why on Earth you would buy that much meat - was there a big party planned?  Made me wonder, if you can drop 350 bucks on meat - how are you getting food stamps? If it was for a party, I didn't get an invite.
