Food Stamp Use Surges By Most In Years As Alabama Foodstamp Recipients Double In May

Tyler Durden's picture

It appears that GDP data revisions are not the only thing that the administration enjoys fudging with in order to make the Chinese ministry of Truth seem like a real ministry of truth. After last month the data for April food stamp recipients indicated the we may, just may, be reaching an inflection point in the foodstamp participation following a mere 60 thousand jump in those receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), today's just released data confirmed that the BLS and BEA may have had a hand or two when determining this latest data series. Because the just announced jump in foodstamp usage of over 1.1 million is entirely out of the blue, and as the chart below shows, is the highest single monthly jump in Foodstamp participation since mid 2009, when eligibility requirements were adjusted. Yes, that's 45.8 million people (obviously an all time record) living on foodstamps which amount to the whopping $133.80 per person (an increase of $0.54 M/M) and $283.65 (an increase of $1.29) per household. Obviously, annualizing the latest monthly rate of 1.1 million people, it means that over 13 million Americans will live on about one third what the cheapest iPad costs in about a year.

But wait, there's more. Digging into the numbers reveals something pecuiliar: virtually the entire surge in monthly SNAP participation is due to one state alone: Alabama, which saw those living on foodstamps jump from 868K to 1.762MM. That's 36% of Alabama's population. Is this merely a grand rehearsal for the Jefferson County bankruptcy? Did the state see a mass surge in foodstamp use as hundreds of thousands are trying to game the system in advance of what will be an apic Chapter 9? And if yes, what does that mean for all the other states which will promptly follow in the footsteps of Jefferson County, and for US foodstamp participation?

Which begs the question: will Obama be the first president under whose rule total foodstamp usage hit 100 million? Surely, by then there will be a Nobel price for destroying one's middle class better and faster than any communist in the history of the world, so at least there will be something to memorialize it with.

Foe forty bucks but ain't nobody ride that rita
Hop on the 10 to the click

Ask not how to serve your country but what your country is serving, and what sides does it come with and what the condiment selection is.

Welfare Safety Net story:

Thank God we moved out of the shite hole known as CA four years ago.  Wife still talks to her CA friend/ex-neighbor who we'll call Mary.  Mary has a local "Christian" friend (we'll call her Carole) who attends her "church".  Carole weighs over 300 lbs.  Carole is on disabilty and food stamps, poor thing.  Carole conspires with Mary: Mary will clean up Carole's house and other sundry things for a few hours each week, resulting in Mary collecting a substantial check (paid by you and me) from Uncle Barry Sotero or whatever the heck is his name.

The deal is Mary is supposed to pay a substantial kickback to Carole for the pleasure of participating in this felony (any criminal conspiracy is a separate felony in CA).

After Mary hears the kickback request, and computes she has not earned the $700+ check Barry paid her, she immediately drops out of the scam and works hours for "free" the next month to justify cashing the first check.

Wife and I added up the number of people we know living on welfare checks and can just not believe they all walk through life with absolutely no responsibility to give the government anything for their free lifestyle...every one of these suckers has a mobile phone and luxuries the average earthling can not even dream of.

In Alabama they mail letters with food stamps.

In Virginia Moosehead is a beer.

In Alabama Moosehead is a misdemeanor.

Row faster, I hear banjo music.

Somebody give me a drum roll.

It's time.  Just as professional sports teams have progressively sold naming rights to the stadiums and facilities they play in to big business so should the states.  Seriously, you want to talk about ways to grow revenues for this quasi-fascist system / benevolent empire, really pull the ultimate sell out; how much would some big corporate interest pay to attach their name to Alabama, or California, or New York or whatever?

"I'm from the New York State of Goldman Sachs, you?"

"California State of Google."

While some may think it would never catch on in everyday conversations, and thus the branding opportunity rendered a moot point, if the main stream media pledged to speak in such ways I'd bet the overwhelming majority of people would start speaking similarly.  Further, you can bet your ass the politicians in position to spend the new found dough would adopt the new names immediately, perhaps even codifying the usage into a law.

This may have something to do with the jump.  It appears t be a one time disaster assistance program.

10:02 a.m. CDT, May 23, 2011

MONTGOMERY, AL—

The Alabama Department of Human Resources (DHR) has received approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) to operate a Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP). This program is designed to provide food benefits to people who might not ordinarily qualify for the Food Assistance Program.

To qualify for the benefits, residents must apply in person or have an authorized representative apply for them. Applicants must have disaster damage to their homes, loss of food, expenses related to protecting their homes, or lost income as a result of the disaster and meet income limits composed of net household income plus available liquid resources (cash or money in the bank).

Individuals/families must have been a resident of one of the counties granted disaster status for the storms that hit on April 27, 2011 to apply for assistance. Current food assistance recipients may not apply for benefits at the D-Snap location.

I don't understand the math. How much money per month per person? I would think the average American needs about $150-200 dollars per month for food. As a single person living in Canada my food bill is about $250-300 per month which includes zero for restaurants and zero for booze.

Who honestly believes those state bureaucrats could even process ~800K claims in one month? Must be a data error.

As long as I'm up this late I might as well post this: Gold $1665.5, surging in Asian session, hovering near highs. Guess my $2,400 call within 6 months is not looking unrealistic.

50 million Americans on food stamps, four-day school weeks in many states, street lights rolling blackouts and whatever...and still AAA-rating. Ratings agencies - "we try to be as honest as we can but it is really hard work!"

Reminds me a Chinese character in Deadwood who knew only two english words, "fuck" and "cocksuckers". :)

That new Planet of the Apes sequel must be about food stamp shortage in Alabama (quite a bit dramatized - typical Hollywood).

Y'all can poke fun at Alabama all you want, but there are many people in the smaller towns and rural areas of both colors that are ate up with what I call "good people". I'm from a neighboring state raised in a big city, and one side of my family were farmers. In the 1930's Depression, they all went through bad times but the white landowners took care of everyone and made sure nobody went hungry. I know of one East Alabama rural area where if TSHTF, they'll take care of everyone regardless of color because they're good people. Alot of retired military and families there..
