The Greek story is a done deal. I always understood that Angela did her best to give Germans a chance to prepare for the inevitable.

This is all about the finacial transaction tax that Brussels wants, and THE CITY is not willing to give. STALEMATE! If the EU is to survive, it MUST have that tax. No way THE CITY is going to give it to them. There has been suggestion that maybe the UK would join the eurozone if they were granted an exclusion of the tax. That will never happen, as the whole point WAS the tax in the first place. If you listen closely to Merkel when she speaks, you can hear the eurozone's death rattle. The UK defeats Germany for the third time in less than 100 years.

Keep in mind that Merkel says, the European Union not the Eurozone. They are not at all the same thing: the EU has existed for a long time now and most people even in the UK agree that, at least in it's milder form - that of a trade union - it's a good thing.
The UK is already a member of the European Union, but not a member of the Eurozone. There are other EU nations, like Sweden, which are in exactly the same situation.
On the first set of discussions on the Eurozone austerity pact, Cameron tried to blackmail the rest of the EU (even though the pact wouldn't affect the UK at all, since it is outside the Eurozone) by threatening that the UK would not allow that the EU structures - like the European Court of Justice - would be usable to enforce the pact on Eurozone countries. He demanded that the UK got an exception to new EU financial regulations that might affect the Financial Services Industry (you know, the guys that made more than 60% of the campaign contributions to Cameron's party in the last elections).
On the last set of discussions he was more cooperative (he didn't sign into the pact but removed his objections to the use of existing EU institutions).
Merkel's "We're still buddy, buddies with with the UK" is an aknowledgment of that.

Another tragic misconception is that international trade has anything to do with politicians or inter-govt agreement. Politicians follow commerce, they do not lead it
All international trade ruotes were developed by private merchants. If you want to see where international trade really gets done, go to a trade show.
There are some Govt agreements but they usually involve GE deals being signed by politicians after GE has been subsidised by the US Govt and the foreign Govt has received most of its funding from the US international bank (another subsidy). This is a way for the Fed to breed the dominance of their worthless paper abroad and it'll probably beb the only international trade conducted in US Dollars if its Govt continues its totally deranged and suicidal foreign policies
Danial Hannan MEP is possibly the only British politician who has stated in the European Parliament that Brussles has nothing to do with European trade. Businesses do not give a crap about politicians and none of us read their trade agreements ...politicians do not have brainwaves, they follow commerce around and copy it.. they lead nothing, they just stick spanners in the works (Brussels entire 'contribution' in a nutshell to trade in Europe)

Some valuable info about the style of Frau Merkel
When she says something you have to interpret it in the right way. You have to be an expert on her speak just like there were experts on the speak of Greenspan when he was Fed president.
One general rule: When she is saying something good about somebody (or a country UK in this case) then it is already like a death kiss. She knows the things are settled already but she does not want to be blamed to be the one pushing the person (or country) finally over the edge.
During her career she practised this style quite often. Her last prominent victim was the German defense minister "Karl Theodor von Guttenberg" . Guttenberg was a pet from the US/CIA, good looking guy, came out of the nowhere, was pushed by the wurlitzer media and was build-up to be the challenger of Frau Merkel within her party the Christian Democrats/Christian Social Union. Guttenberg had it all, the look, the talk, the money, the backing from superior powers, the media. He reached it all within a very short time, maybe two years. While he was a complete nobody before. He was a province noble man, without funds and connections. But then suddenly he became the darling of all German media. Plus his beatiful wife. Both visited Afghanistan when he was already defence minister, the German troops over there. Very media friendly.
In short he was a "Frankenstein" made by the CIA bound to be the next chancellor of Germany. He was called the German Obama in the press. Interesting isnt it? One could also call Mr. Sarkozy the French Obama in my opinion.
However, Frau Merkel got rid of Guttenberg in a very elegant way. He was her most dangerous political enemy while he was defense minister and she his boss the chancellor. She never told the press anything bad about him. In the opposite she said. Mr. Guttenberg is a very good defense minister and she hired him for that purpose. And it does not matter for her that he accomplished a ph.d degree as a historian. He does not need it to be a good defence minister. And that was it for Mr. Guttenberg, since in fact his scientific thesis was written by a ghost writer which he had to admit later in public.
So when she says nowadays something positive about Sarkozy or the UK, beware. Frau Merkel might just pull somehow the trigger.
