G-Bye G-Pap

Tyler Durden's picture

Former Greek PM, and career politician, George Papandreou, is effectively retiring. Per Reuters: "Greece's former prime minister George Papandreou told his PASOK socialist party on Wednesday that he will step down as party leader and not seek re-election, a socialist deputy told Reuters. "He told us that he will resign as PASOK leader and that he will not run for prime minister again," said the deputy who attended a party meeting on the leadership succession. Papandreou stepped down as prime minister in November last year to make way for a coalition government to help Greece exit its biggest financial crisis in decades." Nothing like scurrying away in the last lifeboat just as your country is caught in the 21st century equivalent of the 22nd Catch, where your tax collectors, so critical for procuring the much needed tax revenue (sorry Greece, only America can "print" its revenues) are on what seems to be perpetual strike.

I sincerely hope he rots, first for selling his country to the Squid and then for trying to save his sorry political ass by waving a last-minute-not-ever-seriously-meant referendum...

Never has a leader been more let down by his population. He did everything he could to get them into the euro even though they didn't deserve it - and what thanks does he get? Riots, tax dodging, ever increasing demands! I say G-Pap would be welcome in the US or UK; a man who could get the ball rolling again. Better yet I hope his efforts are recognised when the inevitable happens and a firmer , more centralised and soildified, european government takes over the whole mess out of the hands of the greedy capitalists, I hope G-Pap's efforts are not forgotten...the population of greece will be excluded, to their own loss, but europe may gain their greatest statsman as a potential leader!

Amen!

you have some real insight into the process - it takes a great mind (and out of the box thinking) to recognize it ....

europe and the world will be a better place under a more unified approach!  G-Pap can surely contribute to that...and perhaps greeks after all will be able to understand that contrary to popular wisdom there such gifts meant to be just that...gifts!

Yes. G-Pap is a real hero and has massive deposits abroad in various bank accounts. He was openly accused of corruption and bribery in the Greek Parliament - with details. He never responded to the accusations. I suspect that one the the Greeks will make him pay the price for his treachery - an American stooge if there ever was one.

That referendum would have been a great move actually - would have forced the Greeks to think about their choices rather than throwing all their toys out of the pram.

If you want to stay in the Euro - here is the price.

If you want to leave the Euro and go back to the drachma - here is the price.

Sometimes the choice is between being shoulder deep in shit and neck deep in shit - so start thinking about what you really want instead of whining all the time.

Yo, Che Bebe!.....you of all  ZH commentators[bein Canukistani!] shud be willin to shed a special tear for the fore-mentioned, be-pensioned, offspring of the illustrious Andreas:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andreas_Papandreou  ...

much as I hate to quote jimmywales' sio-pedia, the gems therein are too choice to give up: to whit....

His competency of the Greek language was often put into question as he often made serious errors and had to have speeches written for him. He spent a lot of time memorising these speeches in front of the mirror. This didn't always help as he would often mangle the Greek language "At one point eliciting chortles from the opposition benches in parliament when he wrongly used a Greek expression, referring to ”soft fingernails” to describe the EU’s soft stance on the previous government when the phrase actually means ”childhood”.

He was born George Jeffrey Papandreou in Saint Paul, Minnesota, United States, where his father, Andreas Papandreou, held a university post. His mother is American-born Margaret Papandreou, née Chant. He was educated at schools in Toronto (King City Secondary School)

Andreas, of course, occupied a special position at the heart of the NWO's bastion of political correctness, York University....Toronto On....that rotten apple of functional dysfunction from whence the whole barrel went sour!!!!

York University ain't the bastion of political correctness. Try Berkeley buddy.

And yeah, what do we care about G-Pap or A-Pap up here? We'd like more smart, productive Greeks to migrate here.

best thing about this whole crisis - Canada gets smart Irish, Greek and Portuguese professionals. Soon to be joined by smart Spanish and Italian professionals. And who said crises were bad?

Umm, what you'd like and what you'll get in your dreams of diversity are likely to be entirely separate things.  Buddy.

As for York U....Trent U, Ottawa U, Simon F, and the whole nexus of Marxist-tenured B grade institutions which bred the current generation of insufferably smug, tight-assed and myopic realestate bubblistas who make up your 'we' - well, lets's just say that Berkeley expanded north some time around the draft kickin in - then we can both be correct!

I do agree with your point on "insufferably smug, tight-assed and myopic realestate bubblistas", which I'm not part of, because I refuse to get involved in the stupidity engulfing Canadian property markets. You and I agree there my friend. And to think - people in Australia and Canada could have learnt from watching the US, Spain and Ireland self-destruct, but no, they're running over the cliff like lemmings.

As for the rest of your post:

"Umm, what you'd like and what you'll get in your dreams of diversity are likely to be entirely separate things.  Buddy."

Where does "diversity" come into it? It's a lot easier to migrate legally to Canada than the US, and we're seeking qualified professionals. My dream is smart professionals and rich entrepreneurs helping this country grow, doesn't matter if they're green with little pink dots. I never bought into the diversity argument, always believed in the meritocracy argument.

"As for York U....Trent U, Ottawa U, Simon F, and the whole nexus of Marxist-tenured B grade institutions which bred the current generation of insufferably smug, tight-assed and myopic realestate bubblistas who make up your 'we' - well, lets's just say that Berkeley expanded north some time around the draft kickin in - then we can both be correct!"

Riiiight - like US campuses are not Marxist-tenured B-grade institutions filled with pipe-smoking professors.

To the best of my  knowledge, pipe-smoking has sadly gone the way of civility of manner, and articulate argument....However, not having spent any time at all near any tenured Marxists for the last couple o decades, I may have missed a trend or two in that milieu.

No reason at all to suppose I am in any way defending pot or kettle it's all one big happy dysfunctional family! Go TeamCANUSA\USACAN....

As for diversity, sorry I didn't mean to throw in a red herring, I just decided against making a smart alec remark about immigration quotas stacking up hard against "Greek professionals" etc, versus Somali taxistas and CCP functionaries with large investment capital courtesy of their corrupt gleanings from the system.  Didn't want to offend any Thought-Crime Board of so&so in the event that Harper has secretly signed on for extraordinary rendition of his own serfs as well as the rest of the secret betrayals of liberty!

Dude, Harper's a somewhat Reaganite Conservative i.e. loves big money, pro-oil, low tax, that kind of thing. He doesn't want the Somali taxistas because they're likely to vote for the other side. However the "CCP functionaries with large investment capital courtesy of their corrupt gleanings from the system" - Harper likey! To be honest, me too likey - if they plough back their money earnt from North American consumers back into North America, then it's good for us. However I'd prefer if they ploughed into something other than real-estate of course.

One way would be to create a new class of migrants - lend Canada a large sum of money (around 5 million) at 0% for 5 years and we give you permanent residency. No faffing around wondering whether or not you're an entrepreneur and all that BS. Saves us from having to go to the bond markets to raise capital. Suddenly all those Greeks who earn less than 50,000 EUR but mysteriously have a Porsche start lining up at Canada's door...

You're blinded by ideology. They got dragged into consumerism by the richer countries that sold them their stuff on credit, and their economy could not afford it. And the rich countries with "conservative governments" also could not afford what they spent. Only difference is the powerful countries can print money and through the banks can exploit the smaller countries, demanding repayment. The loan-sharking model of economics: your mafia loan shark is no more financially responsible than you are. Only he's bigger

Germany: one third of the boards given to representatives of the workers, Agenda 2010 (which was a compact to keep wages down), etc. etc. and you know what? It worked - industry stayed in Germany instead of being shipped to China.

I abhor socialism per se, but you have to give the Germans the kudos of being much more efficient with it than others.

If you think about it, it all boils down to the fact that a dosis of socialism in a small, compact and homogenous group is quite natural.

The thing is that what everyone thinks of as "deserves" is just a concept.  That's all.  Just an idea.  People have their pensions and their retirement, they don't have any actual wealth, it's all promises.  What is a promise to pay other than an IOU?  So people are pissed that their IOUs aren't coming out fat.  Give me a break.
