Greece Politely Declines German Annexation Demands
Following yesterday's frankly stunning news that the Troika politely requests that Greece hand over its first fiscal, then pretty much all other, sovereignty to "Europe", here is the Greek just as polite response to the Troika's foray into outright colonialism:

What is interesting here is that unlike the highly irrelevant IIF negotiations which will end in a Greek default one way or another, the real plotline that should be followed is this one: because unless Germany, pardon the Troika, gets the one condition it demands, namely "absolute priority to debt service" and "transfer of national budgetary sovereignty", as well as a "constitutional amendment" thereto. there is no Troika funding deal. Furthermore, since as a reminder the PSI talks are just the beginning, the next step is ensuring compliance, as was noted yesterday ("[ceding sovereignty] will reassure public and private creditors that the Hellenic Republic will honour its comittments after PSI and will positively influence market access"), any refusal to implement such demands is an automatic dealbreaker. Which means anything Dallara and the IIF say, as representatives of a steering committee that at this point probably constitutes of one bondholder, with the bulk having shifted to the ad hoc committee, is irrelevant. Germany just got its answer. And the next step is, as Zero Hedge first suggested, an epic LTRO in precisely one month, whose sole purpose will be to prefund European banks ahead of the Greek default with enough cash to withstand Europe's Bear Stearns. Although as a reminder, in the US, Bear Stearns only led to Lehman and the global "all in" gambit to preserve the financial system by shifting bank insolvency risk to the sovereigns (a chart showing bank assets as a percentage of host countries' GDP can be found here). But who will bailout the world's central banks which already collectively hold over 30% of global GDP in the form of "assets", or as this term is better known these days, debt?

Athens categorically rejected the German proposal to cede control over its budget to the European Union as a precognition for the second bailout, the rescue package for Greece. “We can never accept this. A similar proposal was made in the past by a Dutch minister. We do not even discuss about it” senior governmental sources told Athens News Agency (quoted via in.gr).
AFP quotes another (?) Greek government source, saying that ”There is effectively a ‘non-paper’ that was presented to the Eurogroup,” said the source and stressed that “Greece will not discuss such a possibility. It is out of the question that we would accept it, these are matters of national sovereignty.” At the same time the source told AFP that such a move would “require a change in (EU) treaties.”
The proposal as published by newspaper Financial Times triggered strong reactions in Greece. Education Minister Anna Diamantopoulou (PASOK) described it as the product of a sick imagination. “Tt’s an issue of sick imagination, whoever thought it” Diamantopoulou told private Mega TV on Saturday morning.
So far there has been no reacton by the other two coalition government partners conservative Nea Dimokratia and far-right LAOS.
Greek Communist Party (KKE) said “f the Commissioner be necessary for the plutocracy, it will accept him. But with or without a commissioner, crime against the people is predetermined by the co-ruling of the EU the ECB and the plutocracy in general. ”
Alexis Tsipras, chairman of left-wing SYRIZA asked the Greek government to resing immediately and general elections to be held in February. He describeed the transefer of budget control as “a plan beyond any reason. “It is a plan to loot the country and the transfer of its sovereignty to the Eruopean banks and the international usury” Tsipras said (via Proto Thema)

German CDU Kauder: Greece should be Placed under Guardianship
German member of the Bundestag, leader of the Christian Democrat Union parliamentary group and close aide to Chancellor Angela Merkel made a shocking proposal. To place Greece under guardianship! Speaking to SPIEGEL-ONLINE, Kauder threatened Greece with a payment stop and if necessary the country should be placed under EU guardianship.
”We can not always just give money without something changes,”Kauder told “Spiegel Online”. He criticized Greece’s reform efforts particularly sharply: “Despite all the aid packages in the country, Greece apparently only very slightly improved.”

The key distinction here is the phrase “the country should be placed under EU guardianship.”
What part of this concept suggests Germany wants to annex, colonize or be in charge of the “guardianship” of Greece? It’s a little like the clamor in America that we must attack Iran because she might develop a nuclear weapon; political statements do not constitute policy.
It’s not likely that Chancellor Merkel can use any of these concepts concerning Greece: they’re much more likely to be threats and demands coming from the real rulers and organizers of the Troika – the international investment banks.

There are two separate issues at play here. The PSI, which is backward looking, could still be agreed upon. Whether or not Greece retains budgetary autonomy concerns this point forward and any subsequent cash infusions from the ECB. The latter is a separate matter, which the market may choose to ignore while it celebrates agreement on the haircuts, if they pass.
Separately, the automaticearth is reporting that a Dutch political party (PVV) is about to make a stink about the Netherlands being forced to bail out the profligate periphery, and will demand Holland withdraw from the euro.
I figure if you owe a bankster a little bit of money, it's your problem; if you owe them a lot, it's their problem. Greece should guide itself accordingly. These printing fools at the ECB and Troika have no business lecturing countries on fiscal responsibility, since they have been enabling and encouraging this all along.

This current Merkel caper is acquiring hallucinating dimensions. In the current Greek deadlock that has the world holding its breath at Davos as elsewhere, Angela put the dagger to the throats of the Greek Oligarchs asking them the financial keys to the Parthenon. They have refused as is normal. How a head of state in Europe could have even made such a written ultimatum, contrary to all nation state protocol, is beyond comprehension. I don't know if you appreciate the political dynamite that this represents in a two Euro nation conflictual dialogue that goes back to 843 ad. An elected head of state breaks all international protocol by inserting herself into a national election where she has no place and compromises her country's neutral role. Can you imagine if Sarkozy loses, Angela having to welcome his rival Hollande as legal french president; from June 2012, on official visit to Berlin; to shake the hands of a Chancellor who actively campaigned against him! The banks obviously are putting pressure on Merkel. If true, it will make Merkel look as if she’s completely controlled by the bankers.
The banks would love to retain Sarkozy; he’s aggressive on their positions. They couldn’t hope for a better operative. And I would think Merkel’s support would help Sarkozy in his campaign, making it seem as if he’s making successful deals with his neighbors; but, IMO, it would hurt Merkel. As for Hollande, if he wins, he can probably muster a big hug for Merkel.
But I think it would really upset the Germans. I can’t imagine Americans ever supporting a president who went to a foreign country and campaigned in an election for a foreign leader.
For those Germans who are becoming bothered by their increasing loss of sovereignty and who are facing additional hardships and taxation in their government’s commitment to save the euro, I would think they’ll be insulted if their head of state supports one of the investment bankers’ and euro’s greatest advocates – Sarkozy.

As Tyler pointed out, everything about Greece has become irrelevant. Right now, practically NO BANKING SYSTEMS exists in Europe. It's just the ECB and nobody else. Banks are not lending to each other and not lending to people. Everybody has losses not marked to market. Hence, some banks MUST DIE. Greece and Portugal default will destroy few banks which is VERY GOOD for the system to clean up the clog.
However, I disagree with the rate of gravity of the situation. I think MF Global was Bear Stearns. Greece will be Lehman. Just few more weeks.
