Another Shocking, Blatant Coverup Attempt

One of my favorite books is the Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant– West Point graduate, Union commander, former President, and failed businessman. It’s a bit long-winded, but brutally honest, and much of the first volume deals with Grant’s personal experiences as a young military officer during the Mexican War.

The Mexican War was a turning point in American history; fought between 1846-1848 after the US annexation of Texas, it represented many unfortunate firsts for the United States:

1) It was America’s first war of conquest. US politicians had been aching for years to complete the westward expansion, and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo that ended the war ceded all Mexican territory west of the Rio Grande to the US, essentially the entire southwest through California.

2) It was the first time that the US press was involved in a war. Reporters were usually on the battlefield, even ‘embedded’ in troop encampments.  The government used the press to influence popular support for the war, as indicated by this excerpt from the Hartford Weekly Times dated February 5, 1848:

“The course of duty on the part of our country is very plain. Mexico should be completely occupied as to prevent any thing like a government on their part, and so as to secure the entire revenues of the country.”

3) The war was also the first time (of many, many more to come) that the US government outright lied as a pretext to declare war. The official story spun by President James Polk at the time was that Mexican forces invaded the United States, unprovoked, and ‘shed American blood on American soil.’

This account has been rejected by historians, as well as by Grant in his memoirs:

“We were sent to provoke a fight, but it was essential that Mexico should commence it. It was very doubtful whether Congress would declare war; but if Mexico should attack our troops, the Executive could… prosecute the contest with vigor. Once initiated there were but few public men who would have the courage to oppose it.”

Grant later writes, “Experience proves that the man who obstructs a war in which his nation is engaged, no matter whether right or wrong, occupies no enviable place in life or history.”

Not much has changed. The next 165 years of warfare in the United States are filled with lies, deceit, false flag operations, imperialistic conquest, and state-sponsored media propaganda. Those who dared question the official stories were vilified and dismissed as unpatriotic conspiracy theorists.

The most recent example was the capture and death of Osama bin Ladin in May 2011 by the famed SEAL Team Six.

There are so many questions, so many holes in the official story– the conspicuous location in a small town surrounded by Pakistani military, the handling of the body in accordance with a Muslim tradition that doesn’t exist, the refusal to provide any real evidence to verify the claim, etc.

US mainstream media largely gave Obama a pass on these questions and focused instead on the nationwide euphoria over the news.

Now the United States Congress is trying to lock down, once and for all, any further hint of question about the event with a new bill, HR 2819. The bill prohibits any “officer or employee of the Federal Government from providing information about the mission to kill Osama bin Laden to any person outside the Federal Government…”

This essentially silences anyone who might be able to shed some light on the event.

The gag order would remain in effect until the CIA and Defense Department conduct their own ‘investigations’ and brief Congress; in other words, several years at least.

It’s ironic that the government often relies on an insipidly weak logic when it erodes the privacy of its citizens. If you don’t like how USA PATRIOT Act provisions allow then to tap your telephone or check out your rental history, they say, “Hey, if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear!”

Obviously the same reasoning doesn’t apply to them… and it’s another example of the tragic farce that is modern government.

As a Congressman, Abe Lincoln made himself very unpopular by opposing the Mexican War and challenging the facts that Polks used to claim US Army had been attacked by Mexicans in Texas.

The Voice of Dissent

"Congressman Lincoln and some of his fellow Whigs had a very different opinion of the president, Manifest Destiny, and the war. (Polk was a Democrat.) Lincoln believed that Polk had started the war based on a lie. On two notable occasions, Lincoln questioned Polk regarding his motives for going to war. Lincoln once took the House floor and asked Polk to prove that the Mexicans had crossed national borders in order to draw first blood on U.S. soil. This is what Polk claimed was the reason for the Mexican War. Upon addressing the president, Lincoln said: "Let the President [Polk] answer the interrogatories I proposed... Let him answer fully, fairly, candidly. Let him answer with facts, and not with arguments. Let him remember, he sits where Washington sat; and so remembering, let him answer as Washington would answer... so let him attempt no evasion, no equivocation."

The President's Opinion of the Illinois Congressman

"As for President Polk's opinion of the seemingly insignificant Lincoln, the commander-in-chief did not think too highly of the Illinois congressman. To make matters worse, the newspapers of the day did not think much of Lincoln, either. Worst of all was the fact that Lincoln's constituents, including law partner, close friend, and fellow Whig William Herndon, believed that Lincoln's vociferous opposition to the war was unpatriotic. According to Herndon, the future sixteenth president's stance "sealed Lincoln's doom as a Congressman."

You've proivided a wonderful counter argument to the "if you have nothing to hide" b.s.  Everyone should be able to rationally counter this statement when used, especially by friends that are still drinking the koolaide,   by asking back the equivalent:  If the government has nothing to hide why does it have millions of state secrets?  If the government has nothing to hide why wasn't G.W. held accountable for starting the war in Iraq based on lies?  If the government has nothing to hide why did it fail to answer any questions relating to the collapse of WTC 7?  I have nothing to hide, but why, when this is a government  "of the people, by the people and for the people" why should the government be held to lower standard of accountability than you or me? Please answer that for me.

The H.R. 2819 bill, is the "Stop Subsidizing Hollywood Act."  It is a snarky rebuke and attempt to stymie Obama who is trying to make a propaganda movie about the killing of OBL to be released right before the election.

Problem: Per some recent articles, the Hollywood people have been showing up unannnounnced and uninvited at briefings and official functions of the Pentagon as part of their "research" for the film, much to the chagrin of the military operatives who have not been informed.

This is from liberal NYT and Maureen Dowd, who are even upset about it:

NYT's Dowd Claims Filmmakers Receiving "Top-Level Access To The Most Classified Mission In History"

Dowd: Filmmakers Bigelow And Boal "Are Getting Top-Level Access To The Most Classified Mission In History." In her August 6 New York Times column, Maureen Dowd claimed that filmmakers Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal are getting "top-level access to the most classified mission in history" from the White House for the production of their film about the killing of Osama bin Laden. From the column:

The White House is also counting on the Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal big-screen version of the killing of Bin Laden to counter Obama's growing reputation as ineffectual. The Sony film by the Oscar-winning pair who made "The Hurt Locker" will no doubt reflect the president's cool, gutsy decision against shaky odds. Just as Obamaland was hoping, the movie is scheduled to open on Oct. 12, 2012 -- perfectly timed to give a home-stretch boost to a campaign that has grown tougher.

The moviemakers are getting top-level access to the most classified mission in history from an administration that has tried to throw more people in jail for leaking classified information than the Bush administration.

It was clear that the White House had outsourced the job of manning up the president's image to Hollywood when Boal got welcomed to the upper echelons of the White House and the Pentagon and showed up recently -- to the surprise of some military officers -- at a C.I.A. ceremony celebrating the hero Seals. [The New York Times, 8/6/11]

Nice! Actually - I wouldn't mind if it was a movie like 'Mars Attacks'! But if we do have an alien invasion I hope they take out the 'ivory towers' of krugmanville first. I read in the Wall Street Journal last week  that Krugman (Jan 2010) stated that "The real lesson from Europe is actually the opposite of what conservatives claim; Europe is an economic success, and that success shows that social democracy works". WOW! I hope he wears a hat he can eat. Of course - this was the WSJ and I always believe everything I read in the WSJ (JUST KIDDING!)

Oh - and that stupid flap over the Jenkins sponsored 'Obama killing Osama' bill really just appears to be her way to poking the demogods in office. Unfortunately it turned into cannon fodder for the paranoiacs.

I could go on but instead will reiterate that reading Grant excerpts made my day (and angered me).

You think maybe if the whole thing was fabricated well in advance they might have come up with a better story than the million dollar mansion/compound?  Giant holes were easily punched in that piece almost instantly.  It's very clear, except to people with conspiracy blinders on, that they did not spend a lot of time inventing a fake story.  Get a grip, you dolts give the govt way more credit than they deserve. Bottom line is they killed that dickhead pretty much exactly when and how they say they did.

The movie is set to be released by an Obama supporter and the release date is just prior to the 2012 elections.  The bill is just an attempt to thrawt any progress made by the filmmakers and hence any bounce Obama might receive from it, which is why it is being sponsored by a Republican.  I love this site, but sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.  A little background checking would have fleshed this out.

I am very grateful to be born in this country, we are fortunate.

Our forefathers were idealists and built a republic based on principles. I am just a little sad to see us move from those principles for what is at times just expedient. I want to be that city on a hill, a beacon for countries and people around the world to dream the American dream.

Politics today is about public relations and marketing to mold someone into the cult of personality like a hero or a rock star instead of just being genuine, telling the truth, and being a man - not just managing image when on TV.

"Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men." - Douglas Bader.

I must say that whenever I hear the word "patriotic" I start smelling a brown Rat in Uniform.

Americans just love to be seen as "patriotic" and in the name of being "patriotic" they often

act very much like "patriotic" Adolf Hitler. Now there was a very "patriotic" man, if ever there was one.

Another very "patriotic" man was Napoleon Bonapart, both of them fanatics, fascists and megalomaniacs.

If Americans are so "patriotic", then why don't they want to pay their taxes ?

It seems to me that Americans are only Patriotic for as long as they can get a free ride by Governments, any Governments. If Americans feel so  "patriotic" they will eventually realize that to get out of their mess, they will have to increase taxes and also cut spending to get their deficit under control.

Everyone knows that you can't just keep spending without enough Revenue income to cover your expenses. You can NOT keep paying off DEBT by creating more and more DEBT, without causing bankruptcy and recession or even a deep Depression ! You can NOT "stimulate" or "spend" your way out of DEBT! http://www.usdebtclock.org/

The only "Patriotic" way for America to get out of Debt is to increase Tax-Revenue relative to GDP and at the same time cut spending on " Patriotic " Bullshit ( like the failed invasion of Iraq and the corrupt war in Afghanistan and the megalomanic american dream of world-domination )

Such Ventures have always failed and much can be learned from Germany :

German Example Shows Way Out of Debt Crisis

Almost all the industrialized economies are struggling under the weight of enormous debt levels. The problem is their government revenues are too low. Debt-ridden countries like the United States, the UK, Ireland and Japan need to raise their taxes to a similar level to Germany.  http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/0,1518,779893,00.html
