Obama Embraces Gay Marriage

Obama and Corzine — A Match Made in Heaven?

Unlike virtually every mainstream media commentator or political talking head I don’t care about Obama embracing gay marriage.

Now I know that a lot of people on the left — disappointed by his banker-friendly, PATRIOT Act-renewing, indefinite-detention-enabling, American-citizen-assassinating regime — are searching for any reason to vote for him, and plausible reason to defend his record. That’s the nature of tribal politics — “anti-war” Democrats will happily protest the Bush war machine, but they seem quiet when Obama is the one using drone strikes to assassinate American citizens without trial. I don’t like Mitt Romney either, but that’s not the point.

Even for those in favour of gay marriage, let’s not forget that Obama is capable of doing absolutely zero to change the law. Want to introduce a law allowing homosexual couples to marry? Good luck getting it through the Republican Congress.

I’m in favour of consenting adults being able to do whatever they like with each other, but the fact that the current push for gay marriage is supported by Lloyd Blankfein and Goldman Sachs makes me very suspicious (does he want to sell securitised gay marriage debt?).

It just seems like an easy issue for Obama to posture on, while trampling the Constitution into the dirt.

When it comes to civil liberties, Obama has always talked a good game, and then acted more authoritarian than Bush. He talked about an end to the abuses of the Bush years and an open and transparent government, yet extended the Fourth-Amendment-shredding Patriot Act, empowered the TSA to produce naked body scans and engage in humiliatingly sexual pat-downs, signed indefinite detention of American citizens into law, claimed and exercised the power to assassinate American citizens without trial, and aggressively prosecuted whistleblowers. Under his watch the U.S. army even produced a document planning for the reeducation of political activists in internment camps. Reeducation camps? In America? And some on the left are still crowing that talking about being in favour of gay marriage makes him “pro civil liberties”? Is this a joke?

Here are a few metrics that we should be judging Obama on:

People not in the labour force is spiking:

The public debt keeps soaring and soaring from eyeball-watering multi-trillion dollar deficits:

Meanwhile India, Iran, China, Russia, Saudi Arabia and Japan have all ditched the dollar for other currencies in new bilateral trade agreements — which lest us forget is America’s biggest export, and the product that keeps goods and oil flowing into America. This is an extremely dangerous time. While we cannot lump Obama with the blame for the entire U.S. economic system — the system we have was accumulated via Bush, and Cheney, and Paulson, and Clinton, and Bush, and Reagan, and Carter, and Brzezinski, and Nixon, and Kissinger, and Johnson, and Roosevelt and Wilson and Lincoln and probably most significantly of all the father of central banking Alexander Hamilton — Obama certainly has not improved matters.

And it should be obvious to anyone paying attention that Romney — who claims he would support the NDAA and the PATRIOT Act, that he wants to attack Iran, and has hired many ex-Bush staffers, as well as winning the endorsement of both Jeb and George H.W. Bush, and bizarrely claiming to want to start a trade war with China — is cut from the exact same cloth as Bush and Obama.

This is a dead election. Here’s hoping that Ron Paul — who continues to pick up delegates in the Republican race even while being ignored by the mainstream media who would rather talk about Obama’s posturing on gay rights — can cause some mayhem.

Insurance is a private transaction. But taxation is not. Here is an experiment for you. Dont pay your property taxes and you'll see who owns your land. Dont pay your income tax, and you'll find out real quick what the inside of a barrel of a gun looks like. That's polarization and alienation for you.

I respect your opinion, but I am not concerned about the state definition of a spiritual/romantic bond. I am afraid of the fervor (both sides) over this issue that will allow them to create 1,000s of pages of new tax law.

I am also looking forward to the next debate, during Obamas second term,  about paying "tax reparations" to "couples" who could not file jointly untill this president "changed the world"

Agreed.

And the American Bar Association is no doubt licking it's lips over the lucrative lawsuits and divorces along with the bean counters in government.

Once the institution of marriage is no longer protected by a legal societal contract as important for raising children and legalizing the commitments of men and women in their traditional role, then marriage is effectively destroyed for any civic use. In that case, the tyrants will have their plantation society and the Hollywood moguls who help them will have destroyed not only the institution of marriage but morality and, of course, any future for Western Civilization.

I am pretty sure that when the government tries to "protect" anything, we get the opposite result.  Look at the student loan, housing bubbles. The war on drugs, the wars in general. The smart philosopher people would tell you its because the only tool the government has is force, and humans generally react negatively to that (dis)incentive.

We've had the marriage and dependant deductions in the tax code for 100 years. What do we have to show for it? less than 50% of people in the US are married, and the female fertility rate is 1.93  and dropping. I agree that hetero marriage and children is a good thing. Thats why we should not let government anywhere near it. The gay state sanctioned GLBT marriage is only going to bother me when my tax dollars are used to pay "marriage tax reparations ... cause the government was oppressing them for the last 100 years"

“the only tool the government has is force.” --wisefool

Actually, the primary tool the American government has is the voluntary support given by its citizens; if that is withdrawn there would be no government and no force.

Jefferson's principle was that legitimate government is instituted by men to protect the rights they have from their Creator. That was the moral foundation for laws which operate a successful society, from taking murderers off the streets to forcing a man who abandons his family to pay the penalty.

There’s no debate that laws fall short of providing justice…but the alternative isn’t worth considering. What do we have to show for tax laws defending marriage? So far, we have a society where the concept of civil participation is still a part of the concept of civilization.

"So far, we have a society where the concept of civil participation is still a part of the concept of civilization."

I think you are missing my point. The tax code is founded on the marital deduction, dependant deduction. These are good things, they could be written in 2 pages. Next comes the home interest deduction. Arguably a good thing, but not nessecarily. Student loan interest deduction for underwater basket weaving.... 80,000 pages later, you get Romney paying 15% making $56k/day on deffered interest for his "work" at Baine. G.E. getting tax refunds, etc, etc. 51% of the population makes dammed sure they catch every loop hole possible. There is a law on the books that gives a tax break to wooden arrow manufactures in case we get an EMP and need to fight the injuns again. (half snarc, but half true re:wooden arrows)

It all started with that marriage deduction, which is what this gay marriage debate is truly about. Most companies will let you do domestic partners on insurance, but its not really a discount. Hospital visits? is it really that hard to name a person the executor of your living trust (which grants visitation, estate, power of attorney rights, etc).

The marriage and child deductions are the sweet nectar in the center of the venus fly trap that is our tax code, and the only reason we have the 0.1%. Put another way, government "protecting" marriage through tax policy is like a mafia guy "protecting" your business from the "bad" people. If you are married to someone for the tax break, make her an honest partner in an honest corporation, not your wife.

The "govt" did not protect the citizens who were taking out student loans. I think the Govt we have now is the result of the citizens not understanding exactly what Government is suppose to be for. It sure wasn't suppose to be for protecting and passing laws to favor usury or by creating empire around the globe. If Government was doing its job we would not be in this situation and watching the Nation being dismantled by garbage like Obama (Who should be under investigation for murder...but we won't go there because we don't want to disrupt people's illusions about their country!).

The government heavily subsidizes college education, and thats what drives up costs. When you make the cost of something exhorbinant, people think it is a luxury not a tool. This is why kids take 6 years to graduate with feel good degrees. If you are borrowing $50k/yr for something you probably want it to be pleasurable. So we are both right. the government did not protect students. I say their incentivization ruined college education. many of those kids looking back would have been better off working at McDonalds. in 6 years time they'd be a manager, with no debt, cash in the bank, and something solid on the resume. Who would you hire? a 25 year old with non-descript LAS degree or a 25 year old with a solid credit history and experience in anything real?

The usury tax credits go without saying. On Tylers other thread they asked Dimon "how bad is it?" he said "1B for the quarter (current Q2). It could be more or less. we are not going to update. but we are very careful about making profit because of taxation" You heard that right. The dude said we dont like to make money because we might get taxed on it. In addition, if we made money we would be forced to use it to cover losses instead of getting a taxpayer bailout. During the housing boom, real estate agents actually told people to get bigger houses to get a bigger mortgage interest deduction.

And as posted by another astute ZH'er illegal immigrants are claiming deductions for dependants who have never stepped foot in the USA. http://www.wthr.com/video?clipId=7054149&autostart=true

The wars are a given. if 51% of people paid taxes we would not be able to fight unconsitutional wars or run deficits. I know this is my dead horse I beat on ZH, but it truly is the root of our problems. fiat money is secondary. I hope this gay marriage debate furthers the nessecary and "radical" changes Ron Paul is bringing to the debate. This is prole enough that the sheeple will get all hot and bothered and finally wake up!

attacking the definition of marriage is a mistake.

The catch is that there are a lot of states where marriage was never defined for LEGAL purposes.  The way law works is it has to be set down in printed words, and at the time of a lot of early state-level legislation, the idea of a man marrying a man just never came up.

The best fix would be to do a find/replace in the law libraries and edit "marriage" into "partnership" and be done with it.  Some states have passed new laws now, other states are trying and finding it difficult because the citizens don't necessarily agree.

Like amendment one that just passed by the biggots in NC, they defined marriage as between one man and one woman and banned all other forms of government recognition in their state constitution, it is estimated that as many as 90,000 unmarried STRAIGHT couples will now lose any form of protection and "spousal" benefits they used to enjoy, and on a side note businesses are now free to deny unmarried employees from insuring their children.  The law undermines the domestic violence laws,

But it is the very idea that you all somehow have the right to tell others how to live and foist your allegedly superior morality on others through the ballot box that is the real immorality in all this.  If you think it is right or fair for a bigoted majority to express their hatreds in the voting booth then I have some sad news for you, your next.

It'll be interesting to watch the stuff play out.

I don't have any use for legislation myself, but for the folks who believe in such things, it SHOULD BE OBVIOUS that you can't use a single set of rules to govern every region in the country because of all the local differences.

For example, open carry gun laws in NYC might be exciting for a few days, but I don't think the population here would permit them to be enforced.

LOL, there's not much new in this announcement.  Obama basically said that he's in favor of gay marriage, but the decision should be left up to the states.  RIGHT!  Evolution?  Yeah, suddenly Obama has evolved into a Federalist!  ROFLMFAO!!  How about applying that same logic to say..... Abortion?  Yeah, let the states decide instead of some unelected unaccountable judges.  LOL, Nah, can't let that happen!

Stupid, shallow idiots like you just don't get it do they?  It's not the economy stupid; it's CHARACTER that matters.  The spending, debt, manipulation, inflation, corruption are character problems that no amount of money or JOBS will ever fix.  When are you stupid people going to wake the hell up and get that?!

It's all the same thing.  When its okay for two men to do despicable, unnatural "things" with eachother AND FRICKIN' BRAG ABOUT IT, PUSH LEGISALTORS TO TEACH IT IN SCHOOLS, DEMAND EQUALITY WITH NORMAL PEOPLE, AND DEMAND THAT EVERYONE ACCEPT THEM AS NORMAL, would you not say that at that point ANYTHING GOES?!

The point for religious people, often obfuscated, if anyone really cares for truth, is the term and of institution "marriage". "Marriage" is a God thing, not a Govt thing(see Genesis:2, if inclined, applicable to many religions) in most western religion's eyes. Civil and legal contracts are people things. Do you think Govt should condone or impair a legal, fiscal union, between two consenting adults? I know how I feel, and will feel as I wish. It's up to you to at least know why the fuss from the God fearers. If gay folks and their supporters understood this simple religious concept, they'd likely come to understand how to ask for the correct "rights" and enjoy the support they seek, yet IMO state's polls clearly show they do not have that support. Maybe they're asking the wrong question. JMO

Wow, all these years I had missed the clause in the constitution that says the rights delineated within were applicable only to those individuals some bishop or preacher or bigoted racist approves of.  "Marriage" in the law is a civil contract and the government has no more right to dictate who can and cannot enter such a contract than it can dictate who can or cannot eat bananas or believe in your idiotic superstitions, what government is REQUIRED by the constitution to do is to treat all citizens equally in the law, the moment they started handing out goodies and benefits and money and advantages to one married person no matter who or what they were married to they obligated themselves to treat all citizens the same.  You can apply your own personal interpretation to your marriage you want to, but you do not get to apply your "tradition" to my rights or life.  If "marriage" as an institution needs the protection from gays you all claim it does then it must be a very weak and worthless institution to start with.  Maybe we should not be asking hets for the right to marry, maybe the institution needs to be strengthened by outlawing as criminal the activities of adultery and divorce.  And yet it escapes the straight mans sense of irony that every single argument ever made for denial equality in this nation over the centuries have all been shot down as invalid, be it racial, sexual, gender, political or any other kind of equality.

My bad, I see the word religion or god and I respond with fair and balanced relpies that include equal treatment to those that would be stupid enough to believe in such horse shit.  Fuck off breeders is not a lot of punishment for those that hurt so many millions every day for no good reason I know, but it fucking feels good.

I am not going to spend the rest of the night telling you all of the horrific things straight people have done to me for no other reason than I was BORN gay in spite of their not even knowing me, but in fact I could write books about what horrible people straights in general have been.  And they will not voluntarily change or treat all citizens equally, thus they will be forced to.

Do not get me wrong here, I do not want to punish closet cases and straights, I would be happy to just be done with bigots and hate, if only we could just pass a law making them obsolete or criminal.  But, I am still gay, and judging by the posts here I am still hated for no other reason.  You think I am not going to get a bit of revenge?  There is a price to pay for your hatreds and there are WAY too many gay people for those who hate to keep down.

I am not so much argumentitive as I am absolute in my insistance that I am an equal citizen under the law.  If you are not AS argumentitive as I am then you are no ally of mine, gay people have fought hard for 30 years for EQUAL rights and we are not about to compromise with our "friends" who think that if we just wait a few more generations the law will get around to treating us the same as it treats you.

So lucky you have the freedom to marry any woman you choose to, now if the government would just get out of the business of telling you who you MUST marry, oh wait, it is only gay people who are being told who they can and can't marry isn't it?  By the way, I can absolutely assure you that gay people are as disgusted by what you do with your genitals as you are by what we do with ours.  IF we were sordid enough to ever have the thought in the first place, but I for one only think about what breeders do when they force me into this stupid shit argument yet again.  Really, one of the only benefits of the entire MARRIAGE EQUALITY issue is how it reveals the internal ugliness of so many people that hide behind the mask of tolerance and justice, only when discussing their fear and revulsion of gay people do they drop the mask and quite unabashedly start foaming at the mouth, and they just do not get it that it is OBVIOUS to others that what they really fear and hate is not gay people but something inside themselves.  To me that is very entertaining and sad at the same time.

The difference between the spite and hate that you claim lies within all who despise the sodomite lifestyle (not the sodomites themselves, just their lifestyle) and your spite and hate is that you don't even make an attempt to hide it.

You just spew it out all over the rest of us.

Most of Socialist Europe also finished with the debate of preparing for a strong military long ago, relying instead for their protection on the American taxpayer who funds a superpower as a free service. Does that too make the degeneration of Europe great?

The American military does not protect Europe, no how, now way.  Europe is occupied by the American military as a result of WW2.  Europe is conquered territory -- it just isn't politically correct to sayt so.   America's military allegedly protects American (read Anglo-American) interests in Europe.  Reality is it protects the interests of The Empire.  The American taxpayer gets fucked in the process.

True. It’s correct that the military is used to advance the aims of The Empire, primarily the banker-connected multinational corporations.

But a side development of the presence of U.S. military bases also saves the Europeans from having to shell out for military budgets, which had they had them, would have enabled them to be more responsive to the call of freedom and kicked out the American/Israeli aggressors – for which many Americans would have been grateful.  Now all they do is respond when The Empire needs them.

Unfortunately, it also allows their masters monetary freedom to spend more money on "social programs" to pay for the dire consequences of indulgent, irresponsible behavior which the power network condones and uses to destroy the strength of a free people.

Whether they are right or not, there are many people who don't want this lifestyle shoved down their throat (no pun intended).

All this could be solved by dissolving Central Planning. Let communities decide what they want instead of some self-appointed moralists in the Government decide; but if Central planning is dissolved then the Global Elites would have to say bye bye to owning the planet and most of the human subjects.

@ boiltherich - you are neither articulate nor intellectual in your arguments.

You can rant and rail, but you cannot reason.

And you are most certainly not gay (in the classical English sense of the word).

I do not shove my "breeder lifestyle" down anyone's throat. Ever. You see, unlike the sodomites, I am not defined by my abberant sexual behaviour. I, as all heterosexual beings choose to be defined by our persons (character, etc.).

The homosexual / lesbian crowd use their sexual orientation as their defining characteristic.

So who is shoving their lifestyle down whose throat? (I suggest a mirror to assist in answering that one)

The real question is, will they give him a second Nobel Prize now? What a joke! While I am neither for or against gay marriage, I’d have to allow for other individuals to decide for themselves if I believe in a truly free society. Hell, my question is, if privacy is of concern why would someone even want to register their marriage with the state?! I would rather have no state (no government) let alone willingly register you own private status with the state. By the way, having no state (no government) is anarchy and the definition of anarchy is not chaos and does not mean having no rules but instead means having no rulers (no hierarchy) in addition to nonviolent voluntarism.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anarchism

If we only stopped at "all men (being every individual) were created equal (morally equal and not equality of outcome)" that would be it and it's so simple that even a free toddler would understand. It is a complete joke that someone high up in the hierarchical chain on the monopoly on force (being the state or the government) should ever be awarded a prize for peace when peace must already exist in every individual in order to have a civilized society that is truly free. Should we start awarding prizes to everyone who stops at a red light?

A few of you seem quite enlightened, more than a few are grossly ignorant and not out of lack of education on the matter but simple pure fear and hate.  If you understood how weak and stupid, not to mention in denial about your own sexuality, it made you look you would at the very least keep your mouths shut and fingers off your keyboards rather than open them and prove what batshit crazy assholes you really are.

bshirley1968  Is a perfect example and even goes so far that it gives the distinct impression of a guy that spends WAY too much time thinking about what two men can do sexually together, where there is smoke there must be fire so come out of your self hating closet there shirley, because the only plausible explanation for your obsession is that you are in fact a closet gay in denial.  Sad that our society is so cruel as to make people like you hate themselves and their lives when you could be a happy productive member of society.

Homophobic Men Most Aroused by Gay Male Porn

Single, Angry, Straight Male... Seeks Same?

A classic study reveals that young homophobic men have secret gay urges

http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=single-angry-straight-male

WASHINGTON -- Psychoanalytic theory holds that homophobia -- the fear, anxiety, anger, discomfort and aversion that some ostensibly heterosexual people hold for gay individuals -- is the result of repressed homosexual urges that the person is either unaware of or denies. A study appearing in the August 1996 issue of the Journal of Abnormal Psychology, published by the American Psychological Association (APA), provides new empirical evidence that is consistent with that theory.

http://www.philosophy-religion.org/handouts/homophobia.htm

Study after study for years has shown that those who moan the most about gays are the ones most likely to be self hating gays themselves, read it and weep baby, your a faggot and you know it, own it, and maybe you can find a way to be happy.

By the way, 2%?  You all wish, at least 6% of the population is actively and mostly exclusively gay.  Now for those here who think Confederate flags are appropriate symbols of their attitude toward other US citizens/people do I have a brown hanky for YOU!  Oh and I see our first closet case has stepped up to red arrow, but what you all do not understand is all the red arrows in the world will not make you straight or make me go away.

Wow, two misconceptions in one sentence, not a record at ZH but still pretty good there.  People are what they are and no part of them is more firmly fixed than who they can and can't be attracted to, they cannot be "recruited" and they cannot be converted in EITHER direction.  And there is no Gay Club unless you mean business establishments that serve entertainment and alcohol and which cater to a gay clientel by providing safe and accepting environments for them to gather.  What there are is millions and millions of CITIZENS due the same rights and respect you take for granted every single day of your life.  It isn't funny, and it certainly is not cool to pretend that you can wipe shit on the rights of millions without getting some on your own rights.  There is more bitching at ZH about the trapled rights of citizens than we can possibly keep track of, maybe now you are strating to get an inkling of why this is happening, it is because YOU all are doing it to me that it can be done to YOU!

If you want to stick it to another guy, that's your biz. Next you guys will make it illegal to criticize homosexuality. It seems your sole purpose in life is to push for all men, including myself to go out and try fucking another guy....to get us all onboard. Well, guess what? Some of us are happily married and some of us just have no interest in making it with a guy like you. Get over yourself!!

Here is what your president was up to before the election:

According to an article called 'The Bearding of Barak Obama', three of the guys Obama had sex with before he was elected turned up dead (execution style bullets to the back of the head), and two of them were killed 40 days apart and one of them was murdered right before the 2007 Iowa Caucus.

Sir, take my word for it when I say there is not a single gay man alive that has any interest in you or your asshole.  It was the breeders that set the arguments up by demanding special rights to exemptions in taxes and preferred treatment in the entire array of social law, while specifically denying a significant minority of the population any and all rights that were supposedly granted to all.  You pieces of shit are the ones that need to get over yourselves and just stop with your bullshit.  The more you whine the more desperate you appear.

Any rights and/or tax exemptions for married couples was, at least at the beginning, simply society's recognition of the importance of raising a family.

Personally, I agree with Ron Paul that there should be NO INCOME TAX at all!  That would solve the tax issue as it relates to marriage.

But then the sodomite lobby would find another issue in which to push their agenda.

Because it is not equality that they desire. It is power.

Your typical homosexual recruitment logic: Everybody is either openly gay, or secretly gay, or confused about whether they are openly gay or secretly gay.

What a bunch of bullshit "science" that is. Just because some organization like the Ford Foundation (which has an EXPLICITLY STATED agenda to advance "social change") paid some so-called "scientist" to deliver a study that says that everybody's either (1) gay or (2) super gay, doesn't mean anything except it's bullshit propaganda.

Give me a fucking break.

Funny how science is bullshit when it proves you wrong but it is great when it proves someone else is wrong closet case.

I knew some cocksucker would come out of the closet to talk about latent homo's and their favorite "homophobia" bullshit.  Same old song and dance just like Jessie Jackson's bs rants about racism.

I would suggest you take your psycho BS and put it up you ass but that would be something your type enjoys.  Need I say more on that?

Dude, you are a twisted freak who literally doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground.  You can call me what you want and I don't give a crap.  You ARE what you are and too stupid to realize that you are simply a pervert.  But, hey, you can go right on trying to justify yourself to yourself and others so you can go to sleep at night thinking you are normal when in fact you are "queer as a 3 dollar bill".

However much of a disappointment Obama might be he is essentially carrying forward policies and ideas, many of the most objectionable ones, that were created by the prior Bush administration. Indefinite detention (for anyone really), the right to kill US citizens without prior court authorization, the Patriot Act, Tarp (and all its variations), the TSA in all its groping and peeking glory........every one of these is a product of the republican administration that preceded. The idea that handing power back to Romney and the assorted conservative republicans/tea party activists in hopes they might undo what they did in the first place is delusional.

We will just get more of the same.

The pox falls on all our houses.
