Here We Go Again: Euro Soars Following Rumor #2 G-Pap May Withdraw Referendum

Tyler Durden's picture

Total chaos in the markets in the past few minutes following a headline from Bloomberg that the Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou may withdraw his proposal for a referendum, an official with the ruling Pasok party said in Athens today. The official declined to be named. Obviously this is not the first time an unnamed source has spread precisely this rumor, only to be refuted minutes later and we give it the appropriate credibility. Needless to say if true this is indeed political suicide by G-Pap. The EUR needless to say soars in kneejerk reaction to the news, although the far more important Italian-Bund spread has done precisely...nothing.

We've learned from party sources that Greek socialist MPs are forging a proposal for a coalition government headed by former ECB Vice-President Papademos. by Reuters_RossChainey edited by Reuters_RossChainey 7:08 AM

It's not a rumor.  He will withdraw the referendum.

Democracy is dead.  The bigs have taken over everything--until the youth kill them all.

I'm an old fogie. But I'm also a teacher.

I understand the youth. And they ain't gonna take it.

Trust me on that one.  These oldsters are playing with fire.

Looks to me that the ECB is busy again in the Italian Bond markets.  10 Year bond yields hit a high of 6.4% a couple of hours ago and have been steadily declining ever since.

Wasn't it supposed to be a requirement that Berlusconi got his austerity plans approved before any further ECB support was provided to the Italian bond market?

Another hollow threat.  The ECB/EU have nothing.  They cannot back up their threats against Greece and Italy without shooting themselves in the foot, and everyone knows it.

Quintus, spot on.  Been thinking that all along, they only have tough talk... Wasn't Greece going to run out of money by Nov? How can you then hold a referendum in December with no money coming in till then, as per IMF?

A promise to the people to voice their opinion in the name in democracy, and then forced by Eurocrats to withdraw that promise? What does this signal to the rest of the countries of the EU. Scaring tactics and threats to soverign power. The people are giving up their rights and freedoms like sheep.

Italian and Greek sheep seem to favor gas masks and Molotovs.

This rumor, were it true, would be one of the biggest catalysts yet for civil disorder in Greece.

Well, it's that time of year when crooks and politicians and other cockroaches need cold hard cash to placate the mistress or girlfriend at X-mas time. Obviously, the Greeks have hit rather hard times, business not what it used to be. So, roll out the usual suspects for the du jour rumor of the day.

First though, have the babe call the Cayman islands and make an "investment". Here honey, go buy that Mercedes and leave me the fuck alone until tomorrow [when we can do it all over again].

I believe GPaps goal is to lose the confidence vote so he doesn't have to deal with this shi*  anymore.  That said, he is probably floating stuff out there to see which direction will lead to him being voted out.

Well, GPap created that sh*t! He acted from day one as a broker. His target was the Euro and eventually the European Union. Greece was just his Trojan Horse. His ties with Hilary and G.Soros are well known. They need a NWO (Global Governance as he is calling it) and they had to destroy both the Euro and Dollar to accomplish that. The Euro would be destroyed by the failing bailout and the uncontrollable default of Greece, while the US economy would be devastated by the CDS's that the banks would have to pay, since this would not stop on Greece since Italy (at least ) would follow. I wouldn't be surprised if GPap used his newly selected army generals for a coup d' etat.

Endless BS.  What is sad is that it works every time, EVERY TIME.

From CNBC:

"Opposition party New Democracy will probably win an election if one is called soon, according to analysts at Citi.

"The ND has opposed each and every bill related to the bailouts so far," the analysts wrote in a note Thursday. They also pointed out that the party said it wants to reopen bailout agreements."

Sounds like the better alternative is just let Greeks vote - instead EU will arm twist into a collapse...

The latest rumors are that the Vise President of the government, Evangelos Venizelos, has come to a negotiation with other two ministers in order to overthrow GPap (aka GAP - George Andreas Papandreou) from the government, except if GPap uses his newly established army generals.

Inverse relationship: Greek government falls, Europe rallies.

Why does Greek gov fall? Bc they are not asking Greeks what they think about their future.

Less democracy is apparently good.

What a shithole is Europe...
