Hurricane Irene Interactive Update
Some perspectives on the one event that has consumed everyone on the East Coast from CNN: "Hurricane Irene continues to crawl north after making landfall Saturday morning in North Carolina. The storm is expected to head up the East Coast from Virginia to Maine, bringing hurricane-force winds, heavy rain, flooding and widespread power outages. President Barack Obama warned that Irene could be a "hurricane of historic proportions."

CNN Live blog update can be found here.
[Update 11:01 a.m.] Hurricane Irene is battering eastern North Carolina and tropical storm conditions are spreading northward along the Delmarva coast, the National Hurricane Center said in its latest advisory. The Category 1 hurricane has sustained winds of 85 miles per hour and is moving northeast at 15 miles per hour, according to the 11 a.m. ET advisory. It is 50 miles west of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, and 120 miles south of Norfolk, Virginia. The center of the storm will move across northeastern North Carolina during the afternoon. The hurricane is forecast to move over the Mid-Atlantic coast on Saturday night and over southern New England on Sunday.
[Update 10:46 a.m.] President Obama added Rhode Island to the list of states under a federal emergency declaration.
[Updated 10:34 a.m.] New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Saturday it's "conceivable" in downtown Manhattan there will be no electricity after Hurricane Irene blows through. He said that mass transit, which will be halted at noon on Saturday because of Hurricane Irene, is not likely to be fully back by Monday morning.
[Updated 10:14 a.m.] North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue said Hurricane Irene "pounded the state all night," but the force isn't as great as originally forecast. She said there are high winds and flooding problems. More than 227,000 homes and businesses have lost power, she said. Irene has affected transportation in the eastern part of the state; 10 major roads have closed and airports have shut down. Perdue also said the eastern counties will see up to 9 inches of rain. "Please stay inside," she said to the people in the storm-affected region of the state.
[Updated 9:36 a.m.] New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg reminded people that mass transit is not going to be available in the city starting at noon. "If you have to leave, you have to start right now," he said.
[Updated 9:33 a.m.] Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said Hurricane Irene is now beginning to move up the Atlantic seaboard as expected and "the window of preparation is quickly closing." She urged people in the path of the storm to make sure they have enough supplies for a few days.
[Updated 9:09 a.m.] Several inches of standing water were covering streets and parking lots in Atlantic Beach, North Carolina, after the worst of the storm had passed over, CNN's John Zarrella reported.
[Updated 9:07 a.m.] President Barack Obama declared a state of emergency in New Hampshire and ordered federal aid to supplement state and local efforts to respond to Hurricane Irene. Earlier, Obama declared emergencies in Virginia, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts.
[Updated 8:58 a.m.] North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue said tourists and many residents have left the hurricane-slammed region of her state, but she said "some hangers-on who want to see the storm" remain.
[Updated 8:42 a.m.] A tornado warning is in effect for Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, Virginia, until 9 a.m.
[Updated 8:16 a.m.] Radar showed heavy rain falling throughout eastern North Carolina at a rate of 5 inches or more per hour. Outflow clouds from the hurricane stretched from southern Maine to northeastern Georgia.
[Updated 8 a.m.] The hurricane reached land five miles northeast of Cape Lookout and 60 miles southwest of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. It had maximum sustained winds of 85 mph and was moving 14 mph.
[Updated 7:51 a.m.] Hurricane Irene has made landfall in eastern North Carolina, the National Hurricane Center says in its latest advisory.

I live on the Gulf Coast 3 miles inland. I have been here for 59 years, and have been through a lot of hurricanes.
I know it sounds bad but 90-100 MPH winds are not really that bad. When they get over 130....look out.
Irene seems like a "water event" from the outside looking in. Lots of fetch, and rain. Again if you are subject to flooding GET OUT NOW.
I never wish hurricanes on others, but glad this is yours and not mine. But then again I am completely prepared for a Cat5.
Best wishes.
I'm on Long Island and there is basically no panic. I doubt this will even be as bad as last year's crazy windstorm which knocked out power for several days.
Well, Obama does understand vast movement of hot air...
Without electricity will the HFT's work? That could be a big problem in the Market on Monday.
It would SHOCK me if the large exchanges don't have generators. Hell I do and can go for a month without refueling.
http://blogs.villagevoice.com/runninscared/2011/08/irene_comes_ash.php
never let a mediocre crises go to waste, I live in NY and Bloomberg is still hyping the shit out of this even though Irene is getting weaker by the minute. you have to wonder if all the mass hype and doomsday speak by the government and the MSM (TWC is still screaming destruction for the east coast) has some other purpose...
things that make you go hmmm...
TWC always goes nuts for hurricanes. Do yourself a favor and turn it off. I understand there is a John Wayne movie on...Otherwise, listen to the storm. Y'all don't get them often. It is a unique sound.
Once, the eye of a storm was overhead, and it sounded like "angry bees". Very memorable.
Stay cool up there...This is NOT REALLY a BIG ONE.
Greetings from the Gulf Coast...
as a gulf coaster, I wanted to ask do you feel there is any substance to the rumors floating around that macondo is leaking again? anything coming out locally that the rest of us just aren't hearing about in the news?
Yes, I am getting the benzine headaches again. When the wind is out the south, you can smell it.
I actually checked TWC last night and WTF is going on there? That site used to have good information and was pretty low key. They let Cantore do the wild stuff.
They must have a doomer buzzword thesaurus there. Then I found out they were bought out a while back. Now I get it.
Back to the NHC for real information. TWC is a joke.

@ ms_C: hiya, & yep, i think this is overhyped, too, but only as a hurricane, of which @ 85 mph, it is a cat 1. when the winds get down below whatever the cut-off is (70?) it will become a tropical storm. that's the good news
the bad news is that it is a huge system and is carrying TONS of tropical moisture, so, even with another downgrade, there is gonna be havoc in the wind and much of the water is gonna go to loci at low elevation in very densely populated areas
this is no katrina, but it will still produce emergency conditions, and hopefully there won't be too many preppers who forgot to bring in the lawn umbrella, which then went thru the neighbor's roof, or worse, somebody's head, and so on
this map isn't as focused on the east coast, but still shows the storm and that the baro/pressure @ the "low" is "952" as above, but this also shows the pressure gradients and that the storm is heading into a 1012-1019 high pressure belt HPC Surface Analysis/Radar Loop
SPR: You a coaster? You are right, this is a "water event" with a lot of fetch and rain.
Water events have the potential to be VERY DESTRUCTIVE. Don't mess with water.
hey, mr_B_W! w. coast, but with experience on the docks, in fishing and coastal communities, and in marinas, when the "pineapple express" comes thru here! and on the e. coast prior to the mid-'70's
yesteday we had a zH from westchester, i believe, post that the ground was pretty saturated there, already, and wouldn't hold much before runaway runoff, but i haven't looked at the connecticut river valley or anything too far inland, which this storm may effect
another zeroHead said that he thought the trees hadn't seen anything like this in a pretty good while and were "ready for wind-pruning" or something to that effect, also, so there will be outages, posssiby widespread, depending on "the grid" as well as crop damage, property damage, septic systems-to-sewage plants flooding and failing, animal wastes getting loose, and damage to marine businesses, maybe especially for those a little "up river" from the sea, where things can change quite rapidly under "optimal" conditions given the variables below
i don't have the tide books for the chesapeake or other areas, up thru boston, but we do know that: hi tides + storm surge = flooding, at least in general
the high pressure is a ridge, not a "spinner" right now, which should be better for those who live along where the hurricane/t. storm "spin" carrying the warm, wet air, is now meeting the colder, drier air, and will continue to do so as the storm moves north
oh yeah, there could be a few awesome and very wet "surprises" outa this picture, friend
ARGH! Sounds like Hurricane Georges. LOTS of rain and then some wind. Trees just laid over. Once the soil gets saturated, it turns to mush.
Glad you are not in the middle of this. Got your radiation counter handy for Fuckishimi?
The earthquake in VA/DC impacted the stability situation with trees, etc. Root system already absorbed shock -- so massive amounts of water pouring into ground can't be good. DC has lots of big trees. Not saying the hype is warrented -- just that things could be more dicey than what the numeric hurricane force might otherwise suggest.
Huskvarna TM Chain saws. I have no bla bla bla with Husky, they just actually work.
If you don't know what you are doing...STAY AWAY FROM DOWN POWER LINES...STAY THE FUCK AWAY!!!

Yeah, Katrina really made everyone gun shy of hurricanes. And think of it, New Orleans is in a FUCKING BOWL for god sakes.
Rita was the hurricane that freaked everyone else out, but was a big nothingburger.
Then IKE showed up, the Category 1 storm that kicked everyones ass because it wiped out all the powerlines.
Hell I'd be surprised if Irene was wetter than Allison.
And I even was around for Gloria in 1986! That was another nothingburger.
Damn I'm getting old.
US Equity saw net inflows last weeK. Cant believe that?

Irene can blow me. Just sayin...
Well, if Obama said it will be of historic proportions, then, well, that's what it will be, regardless of reality. That's how things work nowadays.
the citigroup tower was originally consructed so that it would fail in a thunderstorm. A princeton Undergrad discovered the caluculation oversights and vulnerabilities in 1978 and notified the lead engineer of the building. there was a 20 year coverup of the events that followed. Hopefully, it is repaired enough now. The engineer suggests that if the damper power fails, the building can still only withstand a 55 year storm after the repairs that were made in 1978. UH OH

Sorry, I made a mistake.
QQQ and XRT are outperforming the SPY.
And you know what that means when the market turns off the lows....

Speaking of hyperbole; looks like Irene isn't even a 'hurricane:'
http://stevengoddard.wordpress.com/2011/08/27/noaas-phony-hurricane-coming-on-shore-with-33-mph-winds/
Highest wind gust recorded upon landfall was only 76mph. Pick any station and see for yourself:

why all the panic and fear...the world has already been covered in a flood of liquidity!
You should already be wet! Go for a swim!
[Update 12:19 p.m.] A man feeding livestock in North Carolina was crushed by a tree limb Saturday morning amid Hurricane Irene's high winds, an emergency official in Nash County told CNN. On Friday, a man in the state's Onslow County died of a heart attack on Friday as he put plywood over his windows in preparation for the storm, a state emergency spokesman said.
This is under update "Storm blamed for two deaths."
Is this a Benny Hill episode?
I blame the livestock...
The tree limb, I can understand. The guy with an MI? I think it's ridiculous that stuff like that counts toward the death toll. If he had been inside aerobicizing, would that have counted? What if he was just outside mowing his lawn?
My eagle-farm in New Jersey could be destroyed... so I covardly fled from it... OMG what a sow man I am...
I've Never in my life seen a storm as Over-Hyped as this! It makes me think that there must be some ulterior motive.
I'm not sure if it is to prepare us for something other than the storm, or just to get everyone to Home Depot and the Grocery Store. (Both of which are Mobbed!!) Or like some others here have said, to take the market up Monday, or prevent some "unexpected" Crash!
Whatever the reason, something is strange about this.
I am you sure you would feel better about everything if it wasn't mentioned at all... Just like the good old days when no one had a clue what was going on...
Google Galveston Hurricane....1938 Storm, Labor Day Storm (1935 IIRC)
Katrina woke people up... some of us knew that the Saturday nothingburger was going to bomb out. Everybody got caught with their pants down and you had a shit show....
I would rather have a idea of what is going on and form my own judgements on how to proceed. There are always people that will overreact....FWIW, I would rather have 24/7 coverage of this than what normally passes for "news"....
I Absolutely agree that advanced warning is a good thing. And this is better than any "News" that is usually on.
The point I am trying to make is not that it shouldn't be on air 24/7 -
Its that it seems Odd and that I've Never seen anything like this before. And that I wouldnt doubt that they would use the opportunity for means other than warning people to simply prepare and to be safe!
I am a resident of the affected shores, and have experienced these storms for years. Just expressing my thoughts on what I see and what I have seen!
It is better propaganda than is regularly scheduled, haha.
As a country we decided to forego responsible journalism in the '80s and early '90s.... Just reaping what we have sown...
FWIW, the Eastern seaboard is about 1/3 of the population... I'd say that makes it a national story...
But I do agree, the Media makes it into a fucking circus....
Will Trump be around town, helping out the average Joe's. Maybe he'll be buying American or even working hard to get the BOA branches re-opened. Would a 65 MPH wind mess up his hair?
That kind of wind would turn his hair into a frisbee.
The Shatner 2000 is tough, but not that tough.
You guys are on to something here, a new extreme sport: Hair-a-sailing.
Oh sure, it's all fun and games until someone's hairpiece puts out an eye.
Wow. When hurricane, uh.. tropical storm, er... tropical depression Irene hits New York resulting in three collapsed umbrellas, 5 lost toupees, and the sporadic use of windshield wipers, Bloomberg and Cuomo will have some 'splainin' to do for this:
http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2011/08/26/mta-port-authority-working-to-keep-mass-transit-running-during-hurricane-irene/
More Wag The Dog Distractions in front of the 10 year anniversary of 9/11 and to keep people's minds off of reality:
The U.S. believes al Qaeda's no. 2 leader, Attiyah Abd al-Rahman, was killed earlier this week in the tribal areas of Pakistan, U.S. officials said Saturday.
BREAKING NEWS
Irene: enormous waste of time, hyped to the max and it's nothing. The most frightening thing about this storm: the lightning and storm graphics from idiot news media like CNN and TWC. Notably, none of their graphics are from this stupid Irene.
These blowhard government officials are beyond ridiculous. Wind! Rain! Run for your lives. Flee!
Idiots.
Barry Soetoro said "historic proportions", huh? Sorry, Barry, it's not Bush's fault, and you can't have YOUR version of Katrina. Just stick to oil well disasters in the Gulf of Mexico. Oh, and say "hi" for me to the BOD of BP.
If you don't know what you are doing...STAY AWAY FROM DOWN POWER LINES...STAY THE FUCK AWAY!!! UNLESS YOU HAVE HAD ENOUGH.
Please ship all PM physical to me. ;-)
OK, what am I missing here?
You go to Weatherunderground and click on the hurricane and you get a detailed map of all the cities the hurricane is hanging over at this time. If you type in the names of ANY of those cities and look at the stats, you see wind gusts of anything from 3-27 miles per hour - with an occasional 40.
This is not a hurricane. This is a heavy storm. A tropical storm, perhaps. But not a hurricane.
Then, go to the news outlets and see them SCREAMING about death, destruction, etc., etc. So far, there's like 4 people dead. This is news? That's the death toll from 30 minutes on a Friday evening in South Central LA.
If only the media spent as much time screaming about the destructive practices of our corporations, banks, and politicians.
So far 4 people have died from this MEGADISASTER IRENE!!!
Why it's not the jersey shore crew is the real tragedy...then people would care and the U.S. could come together in one big lovefest for Krugman and his keynseian sociopathic cabal.
Here is the real danger!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvmeUStFvz8
8 deaths @ 2356 GMT.
I live on Cape Cod. Maybe I should play it safe and take down my wind chimes?
The hurricane is dead, boys and girls. The "eye" is like 10-15 miles southeast of my current position and it's not even a heavy drizzle outside. Very light wind (5-10 mph sustained). NYC will be lucky to get a good rainstorm out of this POS.
Be Glad OK! This is not a "bad thing". Trust me...you don't really want a "big" hurricane. You really don't.
It's kind of raining in DC.
This "hurricane" is the meteorlogical equivalent of some fruticake reality show on "Bravo". Any given random nor'easter packs a bigger punch. BTW too bad Wall St. won't be flooded and washed away by this.
Flushed away, friend, flushed away.
Ænemahttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_3QLMDQ8PQ
Anyone notice that there is no eye in this storm? Also I keep hearing mention of the eye wall. There has to be an eye for there to be an eye wall no? Sorry BO, no 'Katrina' for you save us from! haha
this pissant thing is barely a cat 1 storm and all you fooz are in a frenzy. BFD.
it won't even be at hurricane level when it gets to gnu yawk shitty.
you would dirty your didys if you ever had to go thru a real hurricane. buncha pansies.
weather reporter trying to find the "eye" which was described as the 'tiny little spinning thing,' just south of Ocean City, MD. WeatherUnderground reported wind speed at the 'eye'- 15 MPH!!
Field reporters no longer look like they're jumping out of airplanes and the worst thing to whine about is the steady rain.
Reporters have been questioning motives behind citizens' rejections of mandatory evacuation notices.
This is all VERY interesting.
EXACTLY - why clear the streets AND the MTA? Who was out all alone? Very sinister.
Batten down the bitchez, hatchez.
Forecasted seas in NY Harbor 26ft, and building to 30 ft Sunday afternoon.?.
http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/data/Forecasts/FZUS51.KOKX.html
If this is correct it could be DEVASTATING.
A CAT 1 hurricane is hitting the North Carolina coast and is continuing to move North? And so?
I used to live in Eastern NC. This is a non-event. Why is the media blowing it up?
Bernanke must have called all the weather media to hype this storm to try and get a good GDP reading for August.....this was the most hyped storm in a long time and it was a dud....it didn't even rain in Fayetteville NC until after the hurricane was already gone LOL no lie.....we got about a trace of rain, a few wind gusts and the radar was showing heavy rain for Fayetteville all day Saturday. What a sham this government is for real...they were declaring state of emergency before anything even hit....this tells you the desperation that is the FED, Bernanke is in a huge box and can only continue massive lies to keep the ponzi going for a while longer...
Wonder how much crap people ran out an bought for nothing gets returned for their money back next week...
From what I see the only thing this one bring is extra radiation - bitchez: http://www.aspnic.com/rad/

.
Well then, if the storm isn't that severe, I can return to my eagle-farm in New Jersey, as if nothing happened :)
Pinched this from weatherunderground, a pretty fair commentary on Irene:
Hattip to trouper415Irene = Yawn
Trolling eh? Or just an asshole...
MSM is not on the ball yet.... Irene is becoming a major disaster upstate NY and New England esp. Vermont. As bad, if not worse than the 1938 storm...
My area was lucky despite being in hit by the "eye", at least water had some place to go. Not so in the Catskills and many other places...
Edit: You will hear of Katia in the next day or so... looking very similar to Ivan, cross your fingers.
