IAEA Confirms Iran Has Started 20% Uranium Enrichment

Tyler Durden's picture

The geopolitical foreplay is getting ridiculous. At this point it is quite obvious that virtually everyone involved in the US-Israel-Iran hate triangle is just itching for someone else to pull the trigger. And the latest report out of the IAEA will only precipitate this. Who - remember the IAEA? The same IAEA which did not find nukes in Iraq in 2003 only to be overriden by Dick "WMD" Cheney to "justify" an invasion. As RIA reports:  "The International Atomic Energy Agency officially confirmed that Iran has started enriching uranium to the 20-percent level, which can easily be turned into fissile warhead material. "The IAEA can confirm that Iran has started the production of uranium enriched up to 20 percent using IR-1 centrifuges in the Fordo Fuel Enrichment Plant," the agency said in a statement. However, IAEA Spokeswoman Gill Tudor said that all nuclear materials and operations in the Fordo facility are “under the Agency's containment and surveillance."" Naturally, that leaves the "use of uranium" variable quite subjective and in the hands of political manipulation. Which means at this point it is only a matter of days before the meme that Iran already has nuclear warheads becomes actively adopted by warmongers everywhere.

From RIA:

Iranian officials earlier said the Fordo plant, deep inside the mountains near the central Iranian city of Qom, was build to produce 20-percent uranium needed for a research reactor in Tehran, which produces medical isotopes to treat cancer patients.

The head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Fereydoon Abbasi said last August that Iranian authorities planned to transfer all enrichment facilities from a plant in Natanz to Fordo, citing insufficient security.

He also said Iran had no plans to enrich uranium to higher than 20 percent.

The news is likely to further increase tensions between Iran and the West over the country’s clandestine nuclear research. Western nations suspect Iran of pursuing a secret weapons program while Tehran says it needs nuclear research for peaceful energy purposes. Negotiations have been stalled for 12 months.

The IAEA statement has already triggered harsh statements from diplomats in the United States and Europe.

And just like back in 2003 Iraq, the IAEA's finding will be used, if in a completely perverted fashion. Too bad Dick Cheney is not around to show how gross disinformation propaganda is really done:

"This is a further escalation of their ongoing violations with regard to their nuclear obligations," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters.

"The fact that the IAEA has made clear that they are enriching to a level that is inappropriate at Fordo is obviously a problem," she went on.

UK Foreign Secretary William Hague described the move as "a provocative act that undermines claims that the program is civilian in nature."

The German foreign ministry expressed hope that the European Union will agree on a fresh round of sanctions against Iran during a meeting on January 30, because the start of operations at Fordo was “a step of further escalation.”

“With it, the international community’s concern that the Iranian nuclear program is serving military purposes is growing,” the ministry said in a statement. “So long as Iran does not move, there is no alternative to tough sanctions,” the statement said.

If at this point anyone is missing the parallels to 2003, we suggest getting bigger glasses. Our prediction is that within 2 years Ahmedinejad will be found by the US Army deep in some foxhole, to make the Iraq replica complete.

Our only hope is that by then the entire Middle East is not covered in radioactive glass.

Finally, to anyone assuming China (and Russia) will sit idly by and wait as its marginal oil producer is subsumed by the west, even as it is now expected to overtake the US in oil imports in under 2 years, we have for sale a 5th lien on a reverse Chinese IPO of a company building bridges to non-existing timberlands.

20% is perfect for small reactors ie. nuclear submarines and ships.

Apparently, Iran has plans to produce their own Trident subs complete

with a 24 trunk forrest and MIRV'ed solid fuel subsurface launched

medium range missiles.  It's conceivable that the Persians can

accomplish this without the help of Germany or America considering

they invented fine art colored hand blown glass and hi carbon steel

Too bad the Jews only have American to try and destroy Iran

Doesn't mean we won't try.  I would never underestimate the bloodlust and arrogance of the TPTB.  I reckon Iran is four to seven times more formitable than Iraq (in terms of landmass, millitary assets, and there is a difficult to quantify element in terms of Iran not having a fractured country, i.e. sunni and shia factions at odds with each other plus there are powerful countries outside the Middle East with strategic interests in Iran).  It's frankly easy to conclude that the cost in terms of blood and treasure would be four to seven times greater (call it $2 trillion, 15 to 20 thousand US casualties, 100+ thousand mamed and wounded, and 300 to 500 thousand enemy casualties, oh and oil goes to somewhere between $150 and 250 therefore strangling the US economy).  I'm not even sure we could prosecute such a war without a draft.  That said, Obama is the bloodiest nobel peace prize winner in history.  If the Swiss had any integrity, they would revoke his Peace Prize.

Obombs away!

Since the 1979 Iranian revolution and the downfall of the US Puppet Ruler the Shah, Iran has been an Islamic state. In that interval of time, 1979 to the present, Iran has not invaded anyone. Not once. People of all religions live in peace in Iran, even Jews, who find life so comfortable in Iran they refused an offer by the government of Israel to emigrate!

In the same period of time, Israel, a self-declared Jewish state, attacked Iraq in 1981, bombing the power station at Osirik, claiming it was a clandestine weapons factory. Subsequent examination of the ruins following the 2003 invasion proved Israel had lied. In 1982, Israel invaded Lebanon. This led to the Massacres at Sabra and Shatilla. In February 2003 Israel staged incursions into Gaza and Nablus. In September 2007 Israel bombed Syria, again insisting they were destroying a clandestine weapons laboratory. Again there was no evidence to support Israel’s claims. In 2006, Israel attacked Lebanon, killing 1200, mostly civilians, several UN observers, and littering the landscape with land mines on their way out. In February 2008 Israel again raided Gaza, killing over 100. HAMAS agreed to a cease fire and kept it for 6 months until November 4, when Israel again attacked without warning, killing 6 HAMAS members, and launching operation CAST LEAD. 1300 Gazans, mostly civilians, were killed. Israel lost 13 soldiers. Violations of international law included the use of White Phosphorus incendiary bombs against civilians and non-military targets. The United Nations investigated, but Israel refused to cooperate. In May 2010, Israel attacked an international aid flotilla bringing food and medical supplies to Gaza in international waters. 9 people were murdered including an American from New York.

In the same period of time, the United States, officially a secular nation but predominantly Christian, attacked El Salvador (1980), Libya (1981), Sinai (1982), Lebanon (1982 1983), Egypt (1983), Grenada (1983), Honduras (1983), Chad (1983), Persian Gulf (1984), Libya (1986) , Bolivia (1986), Iran (1987), Persian Gulf (1987), Kuwait (1987), Iran (1988), Honduras (1988), Panama (1988), Libya (1989), Panama (1989), Colombia, Bolivia, and Peru (1989), Philippines (1989), Panama (1989-1990), Liberia (1990), Saudi Arabia (1990), Iraq (1991), Zaire (1991), Sierra Leone (1992), Somalia (1992), Bosnia-Herzegovina (1993 to present), Macedonia (1993), Haiti (1994), Macedonia (1994), Bosnia (1995), Liberia (1996), Central African Republic (1996), Albania (1997), Congo/Gabon (1997), Sierra Leon (1997), Cambodia (1997), Iraq (1998), Guinea/Bissau (1998), Kenya/Tanzania (1998 to 1999), Afghanistan/Sudan (1998), Liberia (1998), East Timor (1999), Serbia (1999), Sierra Leon (2000), Yemen (2000), East Timor (2000), Afghanistan (2001 to present), Yemen (2002), Philippines (2002) , Cote d’Ivoire (2002), Iraq (2003 to present), Liberia (2003), Georgia/Djibouti (2003), Haiti (2004), Georgia/Djibouti/Kenya/Ethiopia/Yemen/Eritrea War on Terror (2004), Pakistan drone attacks (2004 to present), Somalia (2007), South Ossetia/Georgia (2008), Syria (2008), Yemen (2009), Haiti (2010), etc. etc. etc. etc.

So, who is the danger to world peace?

GET THE GOD-DAMN COCKROACHES OUT OF HERE,
including the ugly one who's pretending to be a Tyler Durden.

This is totally false:

"... 20-percent level, which can easily be turned into fissile warhead material."

No ! It's a long ways from 20% to the minimum of 95% needed for real fusion.  At 95%, it takes a several times more uranium than at 98%.  Keep your shirt on ...

The Iranians announced years ago that they would prefer to buy 20% enriched uranium instead of going to the expense of making it themselves.   Iran used to get its medical needs met with radioactive isotopes purchased from other countries.  But under US/UK/Israel pressure, Argentina cut them off, and every other deal has fallen through.  The West has refused to allow any serious negotiation that would allow Iran to meet its medical needs, and that fact is beyond dispute.

20% U235 is the world-wide industry standard starting point for producing a wide variety of isotopes with medical applications. So just chill out and stop your fantasies of another obscene war.

Ignorant cockroach bullshit like this comment from a Tyler Durden poseur, and the rat-pack of ignorant hateful warmonger comments, has gotten to be too common on Zerohedge.  Six months ago, none of the Tylers wrote anything so ignorant and flat wrong.

Where did the people with brains and integrity go ?

No ! It's a long ways from 20% to the minimum of 95% needed for real fusion.

The core of the "Little Boy" atomic bomb contained 64 kg of uranium, of which 50 kg was enriched to 88%, and the remaining 14 kg at 50%.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Boy

Later, I think that 90% enrichment was considered standard for weapons grade HEU. So 20% is not weapons grade yet.

I think that the separative work units needed to go from 0.7% to 20% are more than the separative work units needed to go from 20% to 90%. So at 20%, I think you are considerably more than half of the way to weapons grade.

I say we bomb them with aerosolized Jimmy Dean pork sausage, mixed with milk and shrimp, on a Saturday, during Passover.

But in all seriousness, since the subject has arisen here, I want to question anybody who actually believes that Israel is the "strongest ally" of the USA.  Since an ally is part of an alliance, which implies a mutual self-defense relationship, let me ask you: just how does the massive subsidization of the state of Israel by the USA contribute in ANY WAY to the defense of the latter country?  How is this in ANY WAY a two-way relationship?   Isn't it in truth a ONE-way relationship, with the state of Israel playing the role of a parasite rather than a putative "ally"?  And, given this fact, just why do so many US politicians not only support but vigorously defend this one-sided relationship?

Does not the USA's relationship with, and subsidization of, the state of Israel actually DETRACT from honest US defense, and put our nation's security MORE in danger than otherwise?
