Infographic On The Greatest Gun Salesman In America: President Obama

Tyler Durden's picture

American firearm sales and concealed handgun permit applications are at all-time highs since the 2008 election of President Barack Obama. President Obama's perceived hostility towards gun owners has been one of the key factors behind the multi-year financial boom the firearms industry continues to enjoy. In fact, the National Rifle Association (NRA) is actively preparing to work to defeat President Obama's 2012 re-election campaign, according to Wayne LaPierre, the CEO of the NRA, who recently said the following at the 2012 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Washington, D.C.:

"Lip service to gun owners is just part of a massive Obama conspiracy to deceive voters and hide his true intentions to destroy the Second Amendment during his second term. We see the president's strategy crystal clear: Get re-elected and, with no more elections to worry about, get busy dismantling and destroying our firearms' freedom, erase the Second Amendment from the Bill of Rights and excise it from the U.S. Constitution...When the sun goes down on election day Barack Obama will have America’s gun owners to thank for his defeat.” -

Wayne LaPierre, CEO of the NRA, February 10th, 2012

Ironically, the perceived hostility towards gun owners by President Obama has actually helped the firearms industry tremendously. Since the 2008 election, more Americans than ever before are purchasing firearms & ammunition. This has meant massive increases in sales by firearm & ammunition makers, billions more in federal and state tax collections related to guns & ammo, increased membership in the NRA, and hundreds of thousands of new Americans carrying concealed handguns.  Therefore, should the firearms industry support President Obama for a second term or not?

As for why this may be the case, perhaps it has something to do with the death of the legal system under the current president, very much like Greece, and Robogate killed contract law.

Are ever more Americans simply preparing to take "the law" into their own hands?

I have done some doctoring, and know enough when to leave it alone and wait for EMT to come.

I carry a trauma kit in my vehicle. Galls dot com is where you get em. You as a Civilian may not have access to any meds, but you make do with what you can have.

Even a little bottle and a few strongs to hold you down while I get you patched up is better than nothing. You can punch me later.

Hospitals? HAH. Those will be stripped out first.

Then the Pharmacy.

Governments always have bigger and better guns than citizens. Even in the USA. Your Glock or M16 is still "small arms" compared to their arsenal. Europeans own a lot of guns but gun ownership is strickly regulated to sort out the psychos and gun nuts. Guns are bought for specific purpose, hunting being the number one reason, not personal safety. If a normal middle class citizen really has to buy a gun for personal safety something is seriously wrong with your country.

Well, Switzerland for one, has a more heavily militarised and armed populace than you do and they don't shoot each other and their children day in and day out. One reason is that they are not scared little pussies frightened of everything that exists outside their front door.

The fact that you, as a nation of gun owners would celebrate a presidential candidate who was so scared of snakes and coyotes that he had to carry a gun when he walked his dog says everything about your warped understanding of courage and bravery. Stanley Park in Vancouver has heaps of coyotes but I don't see 12 year-old girls here carrying when they walk their collies.  As a kid growing up in Australia we had snakes that would eat anything you have in Texas for breakfast but we didn't load up a sawed off pump action before we went to play in the bush.

You have becoming a nation of fraidy cats, feasting on inane conspiracy theories and duped by a pig-headed, greedy, power hungry Australian fool who fills your heads with Faux News fantasies while he fills his pockets with your money. Wake up and smell the coffee, join the rest of us out here in the real world and once again be the America that we all grew up admiring and rooting for.

There seems to be some problems with these figures. I know it's not a complete picture, just a sampling, but gun sales up 98% and ammo sales up only 33% means that multiple weapons are purchased and are not being fired, or, people are buying a lot of guns and not training with them (hence the low relative ammo sales).

Training is very important, please don't just buy a gun and leave in in a safe place until it's needed, cycle those rounds!

I think ammo was peaking a little earlier than the range used for the statistics shown.  Also... a lot of gun-folk re-load their own - these statistics may be only considering commercially produced ammo... not individual reloaded components (bullets, brass, powder, primers).

Also, the increase seen in some of the states concealed carry permit applications might also be in those states that most recently passed laws legalizing it... might not be but my guess is that it is.

That's the funny thing about statistics, etc.  They are all taken from some subset of data... it's always best to know from what perspective the information comes from that establishes the numbers.

I have about 8000 rounds fired and counting.

I have rebuilt several weapons twice or three times. I have moved other weapons to swap//trade for newer weapons as barrel wear and other considerations set in.

It is not about me. It is about spending money here in America keeping the Leather People fed making you belts and holsters, ammo makers fed who know what they are doing and learning the laws and applying pressure to those in the Stae house who resist greater freedom.

My area is so totally armed anything from large dangerous game all the way down to home defense.

The LEO's know we are a good home and know who the other good guys are as well. The trick is, we as the People ARE the Government and the Government we sent to DC has not done their jobs in years and it's time to make some changes.

Indeed in a Class of 20 people a few are standouts and gain a interest in serving as a LEO or otherwise. Some go to teach others and assist in different ways.

Give it some time, America should be and WILL be a Free country with no fear of anything except criminals and a tyrant.

This is what I hate, an industry that is growing, promotes small manufacturing and is in the process of being banned.

When these small manufacturers could really go big time (I want to say b*ow up but homeland security..) and start trading with the rest of the world if it wasn't for ITAR- un-ban exports of a the small stuff, guns, parts, optics- its not like only America makes a gun. It would also help export inflation, promote jobs manufacturing- actually making stuff. Even the Private equity guys and the banks would benefit- loans, buyouts, fees- lawyers of course.

All this blah blah anti gun, gun kill BS - 50,000-100,000 people in the usa die from getting the wrong medication or from hospital error- Fix half of this problem and replace pharmacists with vending machines.

Mon, 02/20/2012 - 21:43 | 2179406 Zymurguy
Zymurguy's picture

No, they attack your home and rape your woman and kill your children... because you can't level the playing field and defend yourself.

Guns are the greatest force equalizer in history.  A feeble wheelchair bound elderly woman can defend herself from the most determined assault, simply by pulling a small .380 out from her purse.

In addition to that, our God given freedoms here in the United States of America provide us with the ability to keep tyranny in check.  This certainly hasn't kept them from trying and trying and trying... ever so slowly tightening the collar on our freedoms.  But it WILL reach a tipping point... and then.  Then we'll red-wash our Constitution clean of the corruption and the evil that we've let imbed itself into our great country.

You are either a sheltered child or a complete shut in.  The real world, outside your gated community (your room which you never leave?), is a lot more dangerous than you know.  I live in the city in a middle class neighborhood and had a gun pulled on me once and was mugged once.  Never again.  I could go on all day about experiences I've had and friens have had-  ex girlfriend on a major university campus had her apartment broken into by typical ghetto trash, intruder had a gun, was going to rape her but the neighbors heard the noise kicked in her door and scared off intruder.  Saved the day.  Wake the fuck up.

What you are describing is a typical 3rd world, failed or soon to be failing country. Gated communities, mentally ill and just plain old criminals out there in the streets, a lot of guns on both sides, politicians almost all corrupted populists and snake oil salesmen and you are not really safe anywhere. You do not even trust the police. I don't see much difference between Brazil/Argentina and USA anymore. Except those two are actually slowly improving...

No.  I live in a rural area, but it's a tightly knit small (not a gated) neighborhood where people are realistic about the response time of the police if any trouble should find its way to our doors.  The police are also realistic about how thinly stretched they are and given budget cutbacks that have already occurred and the ones yet to come, the ones we've spoken to say they're glad to know that some people are able to fend for themselves.

You'll either come to terms with reality or you won't.

Now who the hell are we trying to kid here? Most of the increase in gun and ammo sales had nothing to do with Obama. I don't like him, but nevertheless let's have the truth. We had an economic meltdown in 2008 and that scared alot of people. It's been postponed, for the time being. But people were arming up massively for a societal meltdown. That had nothing to do with Obama. We also had a SUPPLY shortage of ammunition as Afghanistan ramped up after Obama got elected. That created a shortage at the ammo outlets, which of course pulls out all the conspiracy theorists and prompts them to stack up, creating an increase in demand. Laughable. It was hard getting certain calibers at the local Walmart but I got as much as I could buy online. Who the fuck are we bullshitting here?

You need to experience 20+ armed and locked Handgunners intent on pushing through a crowd going the other way (Also armed) to get to the 5 gunmen at the end of the range.

I was first up at the head of the pack. My instructor and I looked at each other and made damn sure we both understood I am getting through and he will not get hurt.

Excitement. Hah. More like coiled energy ready to hammer the bad guy with both guns.

It was a Mall Gunman scenario. A group of people are fleeing as a unit as fast as they can trying to make as much chaos as possible.

Everyone of them and us has been carefully checked twice or three times to prove that all are on the same playbook.

The people who are going TO the terrorist or gunman know exactly what needs to be done on "The Line" on the range floor. Only 5 are allowed at a time on that line to take out the gunman.

Then everyone swaps roles.

Now transport yourself to a Walmart somewhere... say during rush hour on a first of month while everyone buys with SNAP Cards.

Several badguys hit the place from both doorways and a hundred or so people start to bleat, scatter and runabout. It has happened before.

If you have not been provided even a small taste in strictly controlled training you will not be able to understand how difficult it can be to take a bad guy down without taking out granny who ran between you two.

There are hundreds of handgun, shotgun, carbine, rifle and other weapons including martial arts and so forth all around the Nation.

I believe it is far good for the Gun Owner to avail themselves of training, even if it is a local PD allowing you to be a guest at their range for example.

The more I learn, the better I understand my weaknesses and strengths. And I hope the fellow Gunowners are the same. At least the ones I have met and enjoyed training with and shooting.

Between that, doctoring and using some older skills that are applicable in post collapse living to assist self, family and others where possible... we can carry on.

But right now, the Government has a very big job. Keeping the masses happy long enough to fix all the issues.

Some of the masses are tired of waiting and are going out to do it themselves to make a better future.

This was my point with OWS.  The right model the wrong message.  These idiots are clamoring for what?   Anarchy, no ruples, or a tyrannical government that will give you what you want.   To get this 'revolution' millions must die, just ask Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, Hitler, how many dead in the name of tyranny and government control, facism and communism.   The United States is, or was, the purveyor of individual liberty.  That is being taken away from us.   I want a revolution but it has to be a revolution of thoughts, of the mind.   Killing half the country so the other half can have what they want, that i snot what we need.   Liberty IS better than socialism, communism or any other model.    But we have to return to that fundamental belief in this country.   We have a president and media that DESPISE liberty because it takes power away from them.   Cheap gas equals freedom.  Hence, they're making gas more expensive.   Gun ownership equals freedom of self preservation - not dependence on a super cop that is going to swoop in at the last moment to prevent my robbery, mugging or murder.   But for all of these people hoping for and demanding 'revolution' whether it's gold bugs or OWS clowns - their solution is nothing but misery and death.   And enslavement after.   And I agree with you - you must be prepared.

To all americans on this blog, talk with those who aren't with you.  Explain that we must change the dialogue, explain that we must demand NDAA revocation, demand that Obama and his 'czars' be removed.   Demand that Ginsberg be removed from the bench for stating the south african or canadian constitutions are better than ours.   Spread the word, don't be afraid, people are waking up everywhere.  And they are open to the idea we need to eliminate the police state and corrupt politics of washington that we have devolved into.

I saw more than enough signs at OWS that called for Anarchy and Revolution.   Most have been scrubbed from the net but the fact of the matter, especially having been in and around quite a few of the gatherings of OWS is that the signs for revolution and anarchy were prevalent and there.

You may argue that those calling for such things were 'not' OWS - but the fact is I saw it.   Furthermore and even more troubling is OWS is supporting Obama when he is in fact the biggest violator of crony capitalism - as detailed right here on ZH.   To not acknowledge this guy as 'the problem' is either extreme ignorance or a sign that OWS is bought and paid for by Oblamer and his supporters - and this is known fact - SEIU, Soros, etc all are supporting and hiring in support of OWS AND the president.    They will be back in big numbers and much more violence.   It's coming - and I hope you've moved to a state or county where guns are legal...cuz you'll need em.   All due respect to all on Zerohedge who have opened my eyes to what is going on - our number one priority is to turn this guy out of office whether it be Romney Santorum or someone else.   Then we can worry about getting the country back.    But we have to lead and politicians will follow.    This guy we have does not want anything but the destruction of the US as we know it he supports Soro's open society - he BELIEVES in this, he believes in black liberation theology and social justice....and in Obama's very own words he's going to act on his own despite congress and that the constitution is a charter of 'negative liberties' on the government.  He's already done this with ACTA, the UN treaty to replace the need for SOPA and PIPA.    This is tyranny.   And yes, republicans are in bed with the banks, too but at least we can elect someone who pays lip service to American Exceptionalism.   If this man is re-elected we are through and it won't  be easy.  It is going to be miserable.   And alot of people will die.   And OWS supports this president.   OWS wants this...thus  OWS wants death.

As if some people actually want armageddon? Will they be excited if that happens and they are living off their cans of beans? I am prepared, don't get me wrong, but I don't want to see it happen. I think for some of these posters it is a novelty for them and some kind of adrenaline rush, but I see very little of real world experience in that. I have been in combat, and I have met very few people who enjoyed that sick shit. Some of these people think if society collapses then they are sitting pretty with their spam and beans. BS. Let them see an abscessed tooth for one of their children. Or a heart condition. I read this blog to get the truth, not to hear from more sociopaths.

Based on the last chart, a back-of-the-envelope calculation shows that prosecutions decreased around 45% under GW Bush, and 13% under Obama. So I disagree with Tyler that a lack of prosecutions under Obama is driving this dramatic increase in small arms sales.

Really, the numbers are so large that these figures can only be explained by mass psychology, and there are probably a variety of factors at play:

1) Racism, pure and simple. It is plainly part and parcel of US culture, although I'm sure I'll get some junks for even suggesting the idea that there are actually rascist folks in this country (white, black, yellow, red, et. al.) It's not really even racism per se, it's more xenophobia, or fear of what we don't know and are not familiar with. Xenophobia is really bad in this country, and these gun sales are a very clear signal of fear among the general public. We can debate about what they're afraid of, but I think we can rule out a massive upswing in interest in target practice and sharpshooting.

2) Concerns about a breakdown in social order (a legitimate reason, IMHO)

3) Concerns about personal security (related to #2)

4) Relentless and unending violence in television, movies, and videogames, where the prevailing paradigm is: "got a problem?, go kill someone."

5) Increased hunting (this is probably a good thing to the extent that folks can become more self-reliant)

On the other hand, sites like ZH are exposing the flawed ideas of the money masters and controllers and winning the battle of ideas. I like to think (although I might be having some wishful thinking here) that correct ideas trump superior arms.

It is a variety of factors for most of us.  In myself, and the people I know, race is not the issue.  Many of us remember the Clinton administration's demonization of gun owners, and the legislation that followed.  Seeing another Democrat president come into office certainly brought back those memories for me.  The financial crisis has no doubt also influenced the decision for some to buy guns.

I remember reading articles prior to, and after O's election documenting an increase in requests for FBI background checks for firearm purchases.  I've owned guns all of my adult life, and have known many others in that category.  It was impossible to not notice people around me who were concerned that more restrictive laws may be around the corner after his election.  Some of them bought guns they would not have gotten otherwise.  How do I know this?  Because they said it explicitly.  Those purchases were mostly AR15's, high capacity semi-autos and the like.  The kinds of guns that would likely be singled out in new legislation.  I realize this is anecdotal evidence, but I doubt that only people in my area had those thoughts, and decided to act on them.  If you're looking for proof of iron clad causation, it's not there.

Wed, 02/22/2012 - 23:05 | 2187633 geekgrrl

I phrased my posts badly. What I meant to say was that the data on prosecutions that Tyler posted didn't support a relationship between a particular president and gun sales. I know you're right about people going out and buying guns. Lots of people I know, including myself bought one. Different people have different views on guns; for me they are only useful as self-defense, other people have other interests, and that's fine.

I usually avoid gun threads because I know I have an unpopular view, but I believe ideas trump guns when it comes to big ideas. It's not an accident that the sword has been associated with the word, and ZH epitomizes that idea. TD is going right after "the man" and to me, nothing is more powerful than speaking truth to power, as if to say: respond to this!

Then again, maybe this is all wishful thinking that things don't break down into a shooting war, because that's not exactly my forte.

all due respect geek, your points are nothing but hollywood psychobabble.    Racism exists everywhere.   It's not something peculiar to the US and frankly, based on immigration rates in this country from EVERYWHERE in the world, including places like Iran Iraq North Africa etc...your accusation is ridiculous.   In fact, the US is so accepting of incoming people that we allow Muslims to freely set up shop in this country, precisely the people we are 'at war' with.   Meaning, we aren't at war with them if you don't follow.  Yes, muslims are meeting resistance in the US because, I believe, of their inability or unwillingness to stand up and denounce what people are doing in the name of their religion.   It's quite a natural response for americans to be leary of people who's most vocal advocates are preaching the destruction of the United States.  Yet, despite this wariness muslims are strong in the US and we have muslims in congress.  CAIR and the Obama admin's pooh-poohing of Nadal Hassan, releasing gitmo detainees only to have them go back to the fight and of course the all out assault on people of faiths other than islam....doesn't help.

Television and movie violence does NOTHING to increase violence anywhere.   The only thing that increases violence is the acceptance of violence, making excuses for why that violence exists and and not punishing those that commit violence.   Violence is a tool of the hopeless.  And, the entire world right now is pretty hopeless.

Item 4 is sheer lunacy.  Show me where in this country  the prvailing paradigmn is "got a problem, kill someone".    The only place that exists is in gang infested areas, places created by the very acceptance of violence, acceptance of excuses for such violence and mostly, places created by the idea that government must provide a 'safety net'.  It's more like a trawling net to capture as many dependent votes for politicians giving away people's basic needs.    .

The only thing driving the explosion of gun sales is a government that is hostile to American exceptionalism.   A government that is aggressively dissolving the rights provided for in the constitution.  And, the gross injustices being laid upon our heads by what in effect is a facist state RIGHT HERE in America.   Our current admin (not saying Bush was anything different) is hostile to the constution, the media who is supposed to be our tribune, to prevent the abuses of the government are marching lockstep with the wholesale purchase of favors for the elite that are corporate owners and government officials.   The fed is siphoning value out of our economy on what apparently is a daily basis.   Thanks much for the University of Connecticut psychology BA assessment of the motivations of the normal, day to day american.

No insult intended.

The difference between USA and western Europe plus Canada is the attitude towards police officers. In the US an officer is feared, not respected while in western Europe/Canada he/she is respected, not feared. Europeans generally trust the police to do their job properly. That attitude difference is probably why so many Americans feel the need to own a gun for personal safety.

In most cases that respect is also earned by the officers in Europe. They are better trained (2-3 years of schooling initially) and the sorting process is quite strict. They also rarely have their guns drawn in any situations. You do not need a gun because the police is there to really help.

No, this year's people who decide to become gun owners will experience these in stages.

Gun buying, Gun shooting at range.

Then learn about ammo.

Then gun gets dirty, they want to clean it.

Then they can learn to buy the right belt, shirt, holsters etc etc etc etc.

Then they want more ammo.

Then they learn better where they are about things like eye dominance, sight issues, maintenance particulars and so on.

As friends and family are somewhat divided and some more become encourage to join in the freedom.

This Nation has been through cycles of shortage in everything gun in the last few years on the Civilian side. If I am not mistaken there is a new factory on the east coast making guns at 100 per week feeding a back order that is three years old and stands at 90,000 guns.

Finally but not least...

No-fly list, TSA Nazis, Homeland security, the right to detain indefinitely and even kill own citizens and more and more militarized police. All those are now a nice set of tools for fascists in charge in the USA. Wake up, idiots. You are already living the kind of police state you so much wanted to fight against!

I couldn't agree more> I'm from Ireland and every time I go to the US it is really striking how much of a police state it is gradually becoming. Maybe people don't notice gradual change if they live with it daily.

On the topic, I worked in Texas once and there was a notice in the office that basically asked people not to bring their guns and drugs into work. I jokingly asked a colleague what they did with their guns then and she told me they left them in the glove box in their car in the public car park. Amazing.
