Iran Military Shoots Down US Drone, Threatens Response

A senior Iranian military official says Iran's Army has shot down a remote-controlled reconnaissance drone operated by the US military in the eastern part of the country.
The informed source said on Sunday that Iran Army's electronic warfare unit successfully targeted the American-built RQ-170 Sentinel stealth aircraft after it crossed into Iranian airspace over the border with neighboring Afghanistan.
He added that the US reconnaissance drone has been seized with minimum damage.
The RQ-170 is a stealth unmanned aircraft designed and developed by Lockheed Martin Company.
The US military and the CIA use the drone to launch missile strikes in Afghanistan and in Pakistan's northwestern tribal region.
The unnamed Iranian military official further added that “due to the clear border violation, the operational and electronic measures taken by the Islamic Republic of Iran's Armed Forces against invading aircraft will not remain limited to the Iran's borders.
The report comes as the United States has beefed up its military presence in and around the Persian Gulf region in recent months in the wake of popular uprising in Bahrain.
The US Department of Defense says Washington is closely monitoring the developments in Bahrain, which is the headquarters of the US Navy's Fifth Fleet and holds some 4,200 US service members.

Iran shot down the drone at a time when it is trying to contain foreign reaction to the storming of the British embassy in Tehran on Tuesday, shortly after London announced that it would impose sanctions on Iran's central bank in connection with Iran's controversial nuclear enrichment programme.
Britain evacuated its diplomatic staff from Iran and expelled Iranian diplomats in London in retaliation, and several other EU members recalled their ambassadors from Tehran.
The attack dragged Iran's relations with Europe to a long-time low.
Washington and EU countries have been discussing measures to restrict Iran's oil exports since the United Nations nuclear watchdog issued a report in November with what it said was evidence that Tehran had worked on designing an atom bomb.

Iran is locked in a dispute with the U.S. and its allies over Tehran's disputed nuclear program, which the West believes is aimed at the development of nuclear weapons. Iran denies the accusations, saying its nuclear program is entirely peaceful.
It appears Iran plans to retaliate:
Iran's response to the downed U.S. drone's violation of its airspace will not be limited to the country's borders, a military source told state television.
"The Iranian military's response to the American spy drone's violation of our airspace will not be limited to Iran's borders any more," Iran's Arabic language Al Alam television quoted the military source as saying, without giving details.
Iran said in July it had shot down an unmanned U.S. spy plane over the holy city of Qom, near its Fordu nuclear site.

I think it is common for the average citizen to avoid war, while TPTB try to build tension. The problem is, that when economies crash and people get hungry, it is very easy for TPTB to stir up nationalism and to get troops for their army. If China's economy experiences a collapse and their politicians see a choice between a peasant revolt and rallying the citizens for war, they will stir up hatred for the U.S.
Public opinion is easily swayed. And in China, if their economy does not hold up, many men will be willing to go to war to feed their families.

If you recall, they began taking out Iraqi installations weeks before the war officially started. This could be game time.
Iran is being smart, they know TPTB are provking them as the stage has been set for just such a response.
Except for the quote, if it means anything at all, that Iran was going to start downing US aircraft (and note no mention of manned or unmanned) in Afghani airspace, as delicate as the situation is it could easily spin out of control if NATO pilots are killed in Afghanistan by Iranians.
Also note that the Vinson has left San Diego for the Persian Gulf, the BushCo has left the eastern Med for the Spanish coast which is probably a head fake or a last week of leave for the boys before they get stuck in a major war, maybe they just need to top off on weapons at Rota. They can be back to the 5th fleet AOR in a few days. And the Stennis is still near Hormuz. The Makin Island is also steaming in the direction of the Indian Ocean though the Navy says for duty in the western Pacific. If the Makin and the Essex are in Guam next report or head further west toward the Sunda Straits I would be scouting out caves to claim as a new home.

That makes two carrier groups leaving for the Persian gulf this week, on top of one there and one in the Med. The list shows the Nimitz in SD, undeployable for DPI maintenance, that is not the case. The Nimitz was home ported in SD but left Dec. 5th last year for a one year refit in Bremerton, it is now available for service, it is slated to have Bremerton as it's new home replacing the Lincoln. No doubt after a year of refit it will hit the high seas for a tour somewhere.
That would put the Lincoln, the Stennis, the BushCo, and possibly the Vinson all within striking of region. If any carrier leaves Norfolk or Japan, or the Reagan leaves SD in the next few days I would plan a long vacation outside of any urban areas and away from military targets.
It all could also just be a show of force to get the overt hostility genie back in the bottle. But, war might be coming, I know I get nervous when I see that level of sea power headed toward the area of greatest strife, and recent events in Pakistan do not bode at all well for peace. Our forces are cut off at the moment and it will take time to develop resupply via Russia, a notoriously unreliable nation to do business with, at the very least the price will be high. The shutdown of transit through Pakistan puts the US/NATO in a very bad position, you can't buy jet fuel or most other material in country, it all has to come from outside. Even if we can get the Russians and other nations to cooperate the northern routes cannot accommodate that level of supply.
No matter how you cut it this looks like a war is coming. I have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand I do not like that we are placed in a position to go to war and lose men/women and wealth to war. But, the world where that is unavoidable simply does not exist, and Iran, or better put fundamentalist Islam centered in Iran, is a real threat to global security and getting worse by the day. It has gotten to the point where it can no longer be ignored, and if China wants to get in on the act then so be it, they also support other destabilizing and batshit crazy dictators that need to be taken out like in Korea. They occupy Tibet, threaten Taiwan, and now say they would fight WWIII to help out their little buddy the terrorist Iran.
So, this might be the fate of humanity, to go out with a bang. I am not going to sweat it, if that is our future then so be it, I am not in any position to change it. And frankly I am not sure I would because to trade survival for blackmail by crazy assed nut job dictatorial fundamentalist Islam and dictators in former communist countries turned oligarchy is really not something I would willingly pick either.

Had you even the first clue you would know by now that I make up my own mind rather than go with the same old crowd as almost all people including you do. Gordon Duff, from Veterans Today, says that, from his high intel sources, Iran has had at least 5 nuclear warheads since 2003 (or thereabouts) by purchasing them from the Ukraine. Who knows....but it wouldn't be impossible. You are correct that a "program" is not necessary.
But even if Iran DOES have one (or more) nukes, does anyone really think they would use it against Israel, who has HUNDREDS? Just having a nuke does NOT mean it is going to be used! Why can't people understand this?

That does sound to me like they actually took over control of the drone and simply landed it. As to the part about it being AFTER it crossed into Iranian airspace, well I no longer believe anything put out by the manipulated and special interest owned press on either side. If they did indeed have the ability to take control of the weapon then they could very well be the ones that flew it into Iranian airspace to begin with. Simply blocking our control of the machine should have resulted in it's crashing not being captured with "minimal damage."
There is something very fishy in the whole story.

I was under the impression that, being unmanned, they flew at very high altitude.
I think they are all propeller driven which I also think limits their attainable altitude. They also carry a heavy payload (cameras and missiles) So like 30,000 feet max. Just guessing.
Yes, plus the closer they are, the better the pictures they take, and more accurate bombs they drop.
The usual cruse height is 40,000 feet the propeller is just for take off and landing after that it goes to negative ion propultion.

Not sure how easy it would be to reverse engineer or learn electronic secrets from a downed or captured drone. The apache helicopter will send a killer bolt of electricity through it's sensitive systems if shot down - even if landed heavily dependant on it's operational theatre and the pre flight setting. Once triggered circuitry is melted and software erased, the machine is written off. I bet drones have a similar "dead mans handle" system. Unless a quality electronic hijack could disable it?

I don't get this Iran A-Bomb meme. The Persians, simply by virture of their location, have been a "nuclear power" ever since oil began to flow in the shipping lanes of the Gulf over there. That's really their problem - it's like they have had the biggest nuke in the world - one which can easily shut down 40% of the world's minimum daily oil habit - but no real lessor means to do anything militarily. Mossad et al has been blowing up Allah knows what with impunity there for a month - "explosions" here and there - with no reaction. Why? All they have is the "nuclear option." One missle with a conventional warhead could take out the Saudi's offshore filling station, and simultaneously disrupt the insurance coverage of all the supertankers re: operating in that area. Oil prices would explode and the world would stop within 7 days. The developed world would be in full SHTF mode within a month. Worrying about a "nuke" in Persia/Iran is full-blown-retard, as Tyler would say.
