Israel Accuses Egypt Of Violating Peace Treaty With Sinai Incursion

Tyler Durden's picture

Whether its 'Trade' Wars or 'Real' Wars, tensions appear to be escalating at an increasing clip around the world. The AP is reporting that Israeli officials say Egypt is violating their 1979 peace treaty by deploying tanks in the demilitarized Sinai desert, which borders Israel.

Via AP:

The officials said Tuesday they have made their objections known to the Egyptians directly and through American mediators. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were discussing a sensitive security issue.Egypt has been building up its military presence in lawless Sinai after Islamic militants there attacked an army post on Aug. 5 and killed 16 soldiers.

Israel has welcomed the crackdown but says tank deployments should have been coordinated. Israel has previously agreed to exceptions to the treaty allowing Egypt to add troops and equipment in Sinai. An Egyptian border official said he met with Israeli counterparts and heard their concerns about the military presence in Sinai.

Recall from yesterday: "Egypt Prepares To Use Aircraft And Tanks In Sinai For First Time In 40 Years"

While the geopolitical focus is once again all over Iran and Israel, it may be time to take a quick look Egypt, where the recently elected, and pro-US president Mohamed Mursi is "preparing to use aircraft and tanks in Sinai for the first time since the 1973 war with Israel in its offensive against militants in the border area." Reuters continues: "The plans to step up the operation were being finalised by Egypt's newly appointed Defence Minister General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi as he made his first visit to Sinai on Monday following the killing of 16 border guards on August 5. Egypt blamed the attack on Islamist militants and the conflict is an early test for President Mohamed Mursi - elected in June following the overthrow last year of Hosni Mubarak - to prove he can rein in militants on the border with Israel. "Al-Sisi will supervise the putting together of final plans to strike terrorist elements using aircraft and mobile rocket launchers for the first time since the beginning of the operation," an Egyptian security source said. Another security source said the army was planning to attack and besiege al-Halal mountain in central Sinai, using weapons including tanks, where militants were suspected to be hiding." Of course, what can possibly go wrong in the middle east once a government decides to escalate military expansion against militant terrorists. Look for crude to rise ever higher, and for SPR release rumors to hit the tape daily as yet another market is ensnared in price controls ahead of the election.

Sure enough, WTI just broke 200 DMA at is at $97.56, with Brent up over $115, both up about $2 from yesterday.

"Israel benefits greatly from Sunday's incident. Sixteen Egyptian soldiers were killed in Sinai. Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood (MB) blamed Mossad. More below on separating rhetoric from policy.

MB's English language web site headlined "Muslim Brotherhood Statement on Unprovoked Aggression Against Rafah Border-Guards," saying:

"Yesterday, a group of criminals and terrorists attacked an Egyptian security checkpoint in Rafah, killing nearly twenty of our brothers, our sons, and stole one car and one truck, and tried to crash their way into Israel."

Hamas leader Ismail Haniya is Palestine's legitimately elected prime minister. He also blames Israel for Sunday's incident. It's "responsible, one way or another, for this attack to embarrass Egypt's leadership and create new problems at the border in order to ruin efforts to end" Gaza's siege.

He added that "(n)o Palestinian wants to kill anybody in Egypt. Any attack against Egypt's security is also against the security of Palestinians."

An official Hamas statement said:

"Hamas condemns this ugly crime that killed a number of Egyptian soldiers and extends its deep condolences to the families of the victims and to the leadership and the people of Egypt."

Israel blamed unidentified Gaza militants. A supportive Haaretz article headlined "Armed militants attack Egyptian army outpost, try to infiltrate Israel border,"

agreed.  palestinians have no motive for attacking Egypt... Egypt was beginning to open the border and end the seige of Gaza...  this attack was clearly set up by Israel to maintain the Gaza seige and probably to eventually grab more land in the Sinai...  time for the world to wise up to Israel's tactics.

you are a moron if you think this.

palestinians have attacked every country they were in . jordan, syria, lebanon, and egypt. just about every president slaughtered them in massive number.s

oh what's that? you never heard of the mass slaughters in teh tens of thousands of palestinians by king hussein, nassr, and as-assad's father?

that's because you're an ignorant fuck like all the other morons who have an 'opnion' about the history of the middle east.

you're ignorance simply belies a double standard. you don't approve of israel's existence becasue it was achieved by force, just as was the existence of every country in the world. too bad, go eat a dick.

this is why anti-zionism is more often than not a blind form of anti-semistism rather than actual informed criticism of the state of israel's policies.

most of anti-zionism ---simply dissaproved of the jewish right to have a safe haven country for themselves. israel's existence is necessarily tied into the existence of the jews.

and yet, people fail to realize that their lack of disgust for 'islamic' nations and 'christian' nations---is not totally hypocritical in their position on the existence of israel. they hide behind their 'opinion' about 1960's borders and other bullshit. it's like they think that they can dictate the micro policy of a country without admitting they have not already taken the moral high ground on whether or not the country has a right to determine its own policy shoudl that policy reflect existential concerns.

yea, yea, go back to xzy and if it results in the utter destruction of the country than too bad! right......where were these hypocrites in every other conflict like when the russians killed over 100k chechens in groznia. yea. or when every country in the middle east killed their own people,----like saddam hussein. or when the turks kill the kurds.

go fuck yourselves anti-semites. oh but wait i forget, the zionists are also responsible for all the backwards imperialism of the west , or france, uk, and russia because everything having to do with imperialism roots back to the rothschilds and they are jewish and helped fund the existence of israel so thus----all jews and and all israel is reprehensible. this is the logic of the anti-semitic far right. it infects the far left as well. that the acts a single family to spread their influence through lobbying a government, can single handedly absolve centuries if not millenia of european countries' responsibility for their own actions of empire around the world.

anyone stupid enough to embrace this form of logic is generally stupid enough to be manipulated by hatemongering morons to join a hate-cult.

and just because the imperialist globalists benefit from inverse hate used to dehumanize the victims of their globalist schemes (muslims , chinese russians, etc...) doens't mean that the anti-semites and nationalist hate-cults are justified!two wrongs don't make a right assholes. unfortunately the logic of politics and of power is that fire must be fought with fire. so there is no realistic expectation that anyone will change their position , they will continue with their efforts at brainwashing their respective side of the debate.

Remeber the holocaust, the Germans killed so many of us....feel sorry for us..6 million jews were killed in WWII who gives a fuck, close to 20 million russians were killed and you dont hear them whining like a fucking pathetic child like Israel.  Israel has and always will be a country that tries to make people feel sorry for them while they break all sort of laws....killing and torturing and stealing.....I never used to think this way but maybe if Israel was " wiped off the map " I think the world might be a better place without them.  All this BS about Iran is stupid and lies.  The reason why all this is happening is because Iran is close to enriching uranium to the 20% level which is used for medical purposes.  Currently Israel sells to the medical community its enriched uranium and if fears that they will lose business to Iran if it gets to the key 20% level.  It has absolutely nothing to do with a nukke, Iran is not even close, it has to do with a market that Israel has cornered in that part of the world and they dont want any competition.

Kind of telling that they were thrown out of a temple for money laundering in the bible.

No wonder Shakespeare wrote the Merchant of Venice (there's much truth to their ways in that play... it wasn't written on a whim.

Anyone ever look up the definition of "semite" "Anti-semitism" is a politically hijacked term to slander and marginalize anyone that says anything that is an inconvenient truth concerning the corruption lies and deceit the jews play in many different countries throughout history. I for one am sick of the slaughter of gentiles in the name of zionism... Oh, didn't you know that they are taught that gentiles are below them and are to be used and exploited whenever they can? What is a Zionist? from Wikipedia,

Zionism (Hebrew: ??????‎, Tsiyonut) is a form of nationalism of Jews and Jewish culture that supports a Jewish nation state in territory defined as the Land of Israel.[1] Zionism supports Jews upholding their Jewish identity and opposes the assimilation of Jews into other societies and has advocated the return of Jews to Israel as a means for Jews to be liberated from anti-Semitic discrimination, exclusion, and persecution that has occurred in other societies.[1] Since the establishment of the State of Israel, the Zionist movement continues primarily to advocate on behalf of the Jewish state and address threats to its continued existence and security. In a less common usage, the term may also refer to non-political, cultural Zionism, founded and represented most prominently by Ahad Ha'am; and political support for the State of Israel by non-Jews, as in Christian Zionism.

Critics of Zionism consider it a colonialist[2] or racist[3] movement

He may be Bob "Israel" Janjuah.

Reminds me of Treasure Island and Israel Hands. Hands-on oil, hands-off WS. Risk-off big time.

Bob the soothsayer of Treasure Island; if you short WS, you become the new John PAulson. Paulson will be green with envy, he is shorting the Euro.

There are so many places to short : WS Apple crumble, Japan sushi nibble, China shado-finance house of cards, Euro plunge.

I feel like going long on something, like long john, not Janjuah, but Silverrrr!

This goes back a lot farther than 1979...

It's all about control of the Suez Canal (the original, reportedly, having been constructed by Egyptian pharohs in the 2nd milennium BC), the remnants of which were discovered by Napoleon's cartographers...

It's a long & convoluted story ~ which, always leads back to the same place... This one ~ undoubtedly has 'Rothschilds' written all over it & was part of the back door dealing that got the nation of Israel to be ratified in the first place...

As always, deals are made, & terms are conceded... Afterwards ~ the 'renigging' games begin...

Hosni (on one side) and Ben Ali (in Tunisia, on the other side) could have either assisted Kdaffy or given him asylum during the ZATO invasion ... so they both had to be removed by "people power and a glorious revolution" first.

Meanwhile, the wheat prices surges and more and more Egyptians became hungry and angry... remember the rice riots in 2008? you have not seen nothing yet :-)
So who will block the Suez canal first? Is it the angry mob from the city of Suez ? Is it Al-Quida terrorists from the Sinai peninsula? Is it Egyptian soldiers? or maybe it will be Israeli soldiers like in 1973?
I wonder what Europe will do when they wake-up one morning and discover that the Suez canal is blocked and no oil can pass trough. It seems to me that they don't care until it reaches their home.

if the suez were blocked it will be a 30 day blip on the oil market for prices.

1) Oil supplies are overwhelmingly high, there are tankers jammed full sitting offshore in malaysia, and IO. Cushing is brimming.

2) Even with the sue blocked tankers can take the long route around africa.

3) The suez is far too important to Egypt economically to leave closed.

4)  The economy is slowing again anyways. so oil demand is falling off.

The latest news in the Syrian crisis has been the entrance of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi. The rush to war by U.S.-led and Israeli-instigated campaigns to knock down Syria on the way to Iran has now found its match: a new power in the neighborhood, Egypt. Mubarak would have joined the regime sweep that Israel wants but Morsi wants the Middle East to quiet down and be a ME for peaceful Middle Eastern countries.

“Morsi is proposing a solution to the Syrian crisis by forming a Contact Group comprising Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Iran and Egypt, which could mediate a Syrian dialogue and reconciliation leading to peaceful political transition in an atmosphere free of violence.”

This is not acceptable to the United States and Israel.

Ambassador M K Bhadrakumar of India also said in his analysis of the situation, Egypt thumbs the nose at US, in the Asia Times yesterday: “It is useful to remember that the Brotherhood (and Hamas) pointedly accused Israel's Mossad of being responsible for the terrorist strike in Sinai on August 5.

“What made the Brothers come to this conclusion is unclear, but Sinai has been a lawless land for decades and it is inconceivable that Israeli intelligence paid no attention to the Islamist militant groups present there. In fact, what really happened on August 5 remains anybody's guess and it needs a willing suspension of disbelief to accept that the Bedouins could mount such a highly professional operation.

“Besides, something else was jarring. The terrorist strike in Sinai followed Morsi's meetings with the Hamas leadership in Cairo and his decision to partially ease the restrictions at the Rafah crossing (which of course made a mockery of Israel's ‘blockade’ of Gaza.

“Be that as it may, the attack in Sinai came even as the US was piling pressure on Morsi to optimally resuscitate the Mubarak-era security and military tie-ups between Cairo, Washington and Tel Aviv. Both Clinton and Panetta tried hard to persuade Morsi to recapture the spirit of the tripartite US-Egypt-Israel security cooperation over Sinai.

The consensus is that Israel thinks it can win a 30 day tactical war vs. Iran by crippling it strategically... Of course, that's NEVER option #1 (as they always try to get the US to fight it's wars for them)...

The US Presidential elections are the sticking point at the moment... Israel is throwing 100% into the Romney camp (as he's already laid his cards out that he will be their 'tool')... It's uncertain what Obama would do in a lame duck term (or ~ at worst, what OTHER types of repurcussions might manifest if some kind of coup were to be initiated to remove Obama from the picture)... It might look too obvious & open up a whole different Pandora's Box of problems... But it is the reason Israel is ratcheting up the rhetoric and wants to do something NOW...

So you're right... This Egypt thing is compelling because Israel (if Netanyahu decides to go it alone & force the issue between now & November) probably can't have that type of distraction going on if it wants to proceed...

Anyway ~ that's my dime store analysis...

What you say in my opinion is correct.

Justin Raimondo’s column on Antiwar.com yesterday, Bibi’s Game: Nuclear Blackmail?, suggests Israel can’t go it alone with Iran because there are too many sites to hit, and to cripple Iran is to wound a dangerous tiger. So Raimondo’s suggestion was that Netanyahu is trying to blackmail Obama into helping with the attack in that the U.S. would be needed if Israel wants to do a complete job in stopping any possibility of nuclear capacity.

It is my opinion that if Romney is elected he won’t want to be the initiator of a worldwide war centered in the Middle East.

I’m just guessing, of course.

Every time the news focuses on Israel too many of you turn into rabid dogs and it's both irritating and in the end, entertaining to see how foolish you can sound.  Whatever.  For my part, Israel and Egypt are not going to war, they both have way too  much to loose and zero to gain from it.  The USA will sit on both of them to make that point clear.  However, Israel and Egypt are sovereign nations and they make their own decisions, regardless of the poodle on the leash notions of the Bilderbergers Hate society.  That's just nonsense.  Israel has 2 very pressing anxieties and it has made it clear what they are.  Iran is the biggest direct threat because of their willing and able proxies in Hezbollah.  Their second and quite rational worry is inside the unravelling Syria and ONLY because that country has weapons that were they to fall into the wrong hands and pointed at Israel would endanger the entire country.  These are two very rational and not war mongering realities.  Say it as many times as you feel compelled to be an idiot: Israel is not out to have a war because as a very small country the costs are so gigantic and the downturn in the much needed tourism hurts them far greater than the war victory appears on the surface.  However, they are not going about their business pounding on the "might makes right" drum, no matter how many times the lunatics in Hamas, Hezbollah and Fatah say so.  Israel is compelled to take actions because the alternatives are self suicide and they are not going down that road, no matter what.
